This might seem like a far-away place

My house is right there in the middle.

This was 1992 L.A. Riots.

And I remember being 8 years old

and looking out there

and thinking to myself,

"This is it, this is game over. I'm done."

The military came in,

the cops came in,

and I thought they were going to save us,

구해줄 줄 알았어요

and for some reason they kept on pointing the guns at my people.

근데 무슨 영문인지 우리들에게 총구를 겨누더라고요

So I grew up angry,

그래서 전 분노에 가득찬

I grew up mad.

유년기를 보냈죠

I struggled watching my parents pay rent at the end of the month.

매달 말일에 부모님께서 월세 내는걸 지켜보는게 아주 힘들었어요

Sometimes they had to take food out of their mouths

때로는 저와 제 두 여동생들을 먹이기 위해

so that we, my two younger sisters and I, could eat.

당신들이 안 드시고 주기도 하셨었죠

And the people that I saw taking care of their family

자신들의 가족을 돌보고 사업을 하고 있던 사람들은

and taking care of business were the gang members.

폭력단의 조직원들이었어요

So I considered that as a career path,

그래서 전 그게 제가 가야할 길이라고 생각했어요

not because they were the ones that,

그들이 여자와 차를

you know, had the girls, had the cars,

가지고 있어서가 아니라

it was because they were the ones who took care of their families.

그들만이 가족들을 보살필 수 있었기 때문이었죠

And I love my family enough to even to consider that as a possibility.

전 그걸 가능성이라고 여길만큼이나 가족들을 사랑했었거든요

But it wasn't always bad.

항상 나쁘지만은 않았어요

If you haven't put two and two together,

I'm a Dodgers fan.

저는 다저스(Dodgers) 팬이에요

I like the Dodgers even more so

제가 다저스를 아주 많이 좋아하는 이유는

because Dodgers Stadium sits in the middle of the Elysian Park,

다저스 스타디움이 LA에서 가장 큰 공원들 중에 하나인

one of the biggest parks in L.A.,

엘리시안 공원(Elysian Park)에 있기 때문이에요

and I remember going out on the weekends with my family

또 주말에 가족들이랑 나가서

and for la carne asada and sharing our cultura

바베큐(la carne asada)를 해먹고 우리 문화를 나눈 다음에

and them taking me on trails

저를 산길로 데리고 가서

and showing me all this amazing stuff that they knew.

그들이 알고 있는 모든 것을 보여주셨던 것도 생각이 나네요.

I grew up, I went to Dorsey High School.

저는 커서 돌시(Dorsey)고등학교에 진학했어요

You might not know Dorsey that much,

돌시에 대해서는 잘 모르시겠지만

but you might know Crenshaw High School.

크렌샤(Crenshaw)고등학교에 대해서는 들어보셨을 거에요

Crenshaw and Dorsey are rival high schools,

크렌샤와 돌시는 서로 라이벌이었는데

but they are more than just rivals

우리가 흔히 알고 있는 의미의

in the traditional sense of rival high schools,

라이벌 학교는 아니었어요

they are the birth place of The Bloods and The Crips.

블러즈(Bloods)와 크립스(Crips)라는 갱단이 탄생한 곳이었거든요

So I was in 9th grade detention,

제가 9학년일 때 방과 후에 붙잡혀 있었는데

and they gave me an ultimatum:

선생님께서 최후 통첩을 주셨어요

They said, "Either you stay in detention,

"계속해서 방과 후에 남아있던지 아니면

or you go to this thing called Eco Club."

에코 클럽(Eco Club)이라고 불리는 곳에 참가해라" 라고 하셨어요

And I said, "What?!? Eco Club?

그래서 전 "뭐라고요? 에코 클럽이요?

Forget you!"

무슨 말도 안되는 소릴 하세요!"라고 했죠. (웃음)

But I took a chance and I went over to Eco Club.

하지만 받아 들이고 에코 클럽엘 갔었어요

And the first thing that they said was,

그들이 처음으로 한 말은

"Grab a bag of seeds and let's go out."

"씨가 든 가방을 가지고 나갑시다" 였어요

And I picked jalapeños

전 할라피뇨를 집어들었죠

because I wanted to grill salsa for my mom at the end of that.

끝날 때 쯤 어머니께 살사를 만들어 드리고 싶었거든요

And they tricked me!

그런데 날 속였어요!

Then all of a sudden, I started worrying about photosynthesis

갑자기 제가 광합성이나 pH 밸런스

and the pH balance,

자외선 복사 같은

and the UV radiation,

제 할라피뇨를 잘 크게 해줄 다양한 것들에 대해

and all this different stuff that would make my jalapeños grow.

걱정을 하고 있더라니까요. (웃음)

At the end of that semester, they gave me an opportunity

학기가 끝날 때쯤 그들은 제게 와이오밍(Wyoming)주에 있는

to go to the Teton Science Schools in Wyoming.

티튼 과학학교(Teton Science Schools)에 갈 수 있는 기회를 줬어요

For a kid who has never been out of South Central,

중남부를 벗어나본 적이 없는 아이에게

to see mountains for the first time,

처음으로 산을 볼 수 있고

to look up at the night sky and count,

밤하늘을 올려다보고 별을 셀 수 있도록 말이에요

I couldn't even count, the stars.

숫자도 잘 못세긴 하지만요

For the first time in my life at the age of 15

15살이 되었을 때 제 인생에서 처음으로

I saw more stars than I could count.

제가 셀 수 있는 숫자보다 많은 별들을 봤어요

I had to pinch myself and look at that shooting star

저는 제 자신을 꼬집고 별똥별을 보면서

and say, "No, that's not the ghetto bird coming up at me."

"아냐, 저건 날 쫓아오는 헬기가 아닐꺼야"라고 말해야 했었죠

And the ghetto bird, you won't find in the Audobon book,

게토 버드(ghetto bird)도 아닐거에요. 오듀본(John J. Audubon)의 조류도감에 나오지 않아요

it's a police helicopter in case you don't know.

혹시나 모르시는 분들께 말씀드리자면 경찰 헬기에요.

And I went back home and I found mentors and friends

저는 집으로 돌아가서 멘토와 친구들

and family and people who supported me in this,

가족들 그리고 저를 도와줄 수 있는 사람들을 찾았어요

and in 2005, this guy named Richard Louv

그리고 2005년 리처드 루브(Richard Louv)라는 이 사람이

wrote a book called <i>Last Child in the Woods</i>,

'숲 속에 남은 마지막 아이(Last Child in the Woods)' 라는 책을 썼는데

and he coined a phrase called "nature-deficit disorder".

여기서 자연 결핍 장애(natural-deficit disorder)라는 표현을 처음으로 만들어냈어요

It's not a medical term, don't worry,

의학적 용어는 아니니 걱정하지 마세요

you don't have to take drugs for it,

약을 먹을 필요도 없어요

it's an easy fix:

쉽게 고칠 수 있죠

all you have to do is get outside.

밖으로 나가기만 하면 돼요

Because we have 7 billion people in the world today,

오늘날 전세계에는

but if you were to put all those 7 billion people

70억 명의 사람들이 있긴 하지만

shoulder-to-shoulder with each other,

그 사람들을 따닥따닥 붙여놓아야 한다면

they could all fit in the city of L.A.

LA에 모두 다 들어갈 수 있어요

It's not necessarily that we are running out of space,

우리에게 공간이 부족해지고 있다는 게 아니라

it's how we are using that space up.

그 공간을 어떻게 사용하느냐가 문제인거죠

The average U.S. teenager now spends

요즘의 평균적인 미국 10대들은

somewhere between 40 and 65 hours a week

매주 40~65시간을 미디어 도구,

connected to some type of media device,

즉 기술과 관련된 것에

some kind of technology.

사용하고 있어요

That's a full-time job!

정규직이나 마찬가지인거죠!

We're not saying that its bad,

이게 나쁘다는 건 아니에요

we're just saying get out, have fun!

단지 밖에 나가서 놀라는 거죠

And I got together with some friends

그래서 전 친구들과 모여서

and we created this thing called the "Natural Leaders Network".

"자연 리더 네트워크(Natural Leaders Network)"라는 모임을 만들었어요

And we wanted to find out

저희는 전세계에 사는 다른 사람들은

how other people are getting outside all over the world.

밖에서 뭘하고 노는지 알아보고 싶었거든요

We thought it was just us here in the U.S.,

그런데 미국에 있는 저희들만 그런게 아니라

but no, no, it's all over the world.

전세계에서도 같은 생각을 하더라고요

And we started getting amazing things back:

그러고는 저희에게 놀라운 것들이 전해졌어요

the beaches,

해변이나,

the mountains,

산,

in the middle of the city,

도시 한 가운데

how people got out,

사람들이 어떻게 밖으로 나가는지와 같이

just the pure joy of celebrating our connection with nature.

자연과의 조우를 축하하는 순수한 즐거움을 말이죠

And it all started with that one group.

이 모든 것들이 바로 그 단체에서 비롯됐어요

I want to give you this new motivation

저는 여러분들께 이 신 자연 운동에 대한

about a new nature movement,

새로운 동기와

and 7 reasons for a new nature movement.

일곱 가지 이유를 말씀드리고자 해요

You can create your own reasons,

여러분들만의 이유를 만들 수도 있지만

but these are 7 reasons that we're talking about.

저희는 이 일곱 가지 이유를 들고 있어요

I'm going to speed up a little bit because of time.

시간 때문에 속도를 조금 내야겠네요

But, take it from these kids, let's go get outside!

이 '나가서 놀자!'고 하는 아이들을 보세요

Last year I got to climb the grand Teton.

작년에 저는 그랜드 티튼(Grand Teton)을 등반했어요

I went from being that kid from South Central

저는 왜인지는 모르겠지만 유년 시절에

realizing that somehow I was connected to those mountains,

저와 그리고 중남부 LA에 있는 제 고향이

that my community in South Central L.A. was connected to the mountains up there.

저기 저 산과 관련이 있다고 깨달은 그런 아이였어요

And it all made sense,

그리고 정말 그랬어요.

the world made sense to me.

전세계가 딱 들어 맞았어요

Science, and math, and history, and English,

그것 때문에 과학, 수학, 역사, 영어

and all the different things that were happening in this world

made sense to me because of that.

I went out to be the first one to graduate from my family in high school.

I'm the first one.

I'm a National Geographic Explorer today.

I do these amazing talks,

지금 여기서 멋진 강연을 하고 있죠

and I'm not telling you these things so I can brag about it,

물론 여러분들께 자랑을 하거나

or that I can show off,

뽐내고 싶어서 이런 말씀을 드리는 게 아니에요

I'm telling you these things because if a kid from South Central

제가 드리고 싶은 말은

who was about to be a gang member

갱단의 일원이 될뻔 했던 중남부의 아이가

can grow up to be a National Geographic Explorer

커서 내셔널 지오그래픽 탐사자가 되어서

and sit here in front of you and address you like I am today,

여러분들 앞에 서서 제가 지금 하는 것처럼 강연을 할 수 있다면

then don't ever, ever in your life doubt what you can do.

무슨 일이 있어도 여러분들의 가능성에 의심을 품지 말라는 얘기를 하고 싶었어요. (박수)

At the end of the day, I do what I do because of my family.

제가 죽는 날까지 저는 가족들을 위해서 일할거에요

My family means the world to me

가족들은 제가 세상과 같아요

and from this day forward,

그리고 이 시간 이후로부터

each one of you in this room is part of that family.
