In this video, we’re going to talk about the articles; ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’.

ในวิดีโอนี้ เราจะพูดถึงบทความต่างๆ 'a', 'an' และ 'the'

Now this can be very confusing, so please make sure you pay careful attention.

We use articles in front of nouns.

Okay, so remember that and let’s look at the board.

โอเค จำไว้แล้วมาดูกระดานกันดีกว่า

First, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about any one thing.

ก่อนอื่น เราใช้ 'a' หรือ 'an' เมื่อเรากำลังพูดถึงสิ่งหนึ่งสิ่งใด

For example, let’s say I say, “A banana is delicious.”

ตัวอย่างเช่น สมมติว่าฉันพูดว่า “กล้วยอร่อย”

Okay, that means all bananas.

โอเค นั่นหมายถึงกล้วยทั้งหมด

Any banana is delicious.

กล้วยอะไรก็อร่อย

“A banana is delicious.”

“กล้วยก็อร่อย”

Okay, let’s jump over here.

โอเค เรามากระโดดตรงนี้กันดีกว่า

If I’m talking about a specific banana…

หากฉันกำลังพูดถึงกล้วยชนิดใดชนิดหนึ่ง…

maybe I have a banana in my hand.

บางทีฉันอาจมีกล้วยอยู่ในมือ

It’s specific, not any banana, this one.

มันเฉพาะเจาะจง ไม่ใช่กล้วยใดๆ เลย

I have to use ‘the’,

ฉันต้องใช้ 'the' ว่า

“The banana is old.”

“กล้วยแก่แล้ว”

Okay. This one.

ตกลง. อันนี้.

I can’t say, “A banana is old.”

ฉันไม่สามารถพูดได้ว่า “กล้วยมันแก่แล้ว”

Then that means all bananas are old.

นั่นหมายความว่ากล้วยทั้งหมดนั้นแก่แล้ว

And that’s not true. Just this one.

และนั่นไม่เป็นความจริง แค่อันนี้อันเดียว

So, I say, “The banana is old.”

ฉันจึงพูดว่า “กล้วยมันแก่แล้ว”

Okay, let’s move over here.

โอเค ย้ายมาที่นี่กันดีกว่า

We also use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about something for the first time.

นอกจากนี้เรายังใช้ 'a' หรือ 'an' เมื่อเรากำลังพูดถึงบางสิ่งบางอย่างเป็นครั้งแรก

So, I have another example here.

ฉันมีตัวอย่างอื่นที่นี่

“I watched a movie.”

"ฉันดูหนัง."

Okay.

I’m talking about this movie for the first time, so I have to use “…a movie”.

ตกลง.

ฉันกำลังพูดถึงภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้เป็นครั้งแรก ดังนั้นฉันจึงต้องใช้ “...ภาพยนตร์”

But, if I want to talk about this movie again,

แต่ถ้าผมอยากจะพูดถึงหนังเรื่องนี้อีก

for the second time, or the third time or fourth, fifth…

ครั้ง ครั้งที่สอง หรือครั้งที่สาม หรือสี่ ห้า…

it doesn’t matter.

มันก็ไม่สำคัญ

I have to use ‘the’.

ฉันต้องใช้ 'ที่'

“The movie was fun.”

“หนังเรื่องนี้สนุกดี”

I’m talking about this one. The specific.

ฉันกำลังพูดถึงเรื่องนี้ เฉพาะเจาะจง.

“The movie was fun.”

“หนังเรื่องนี้สนุกดี”

I can’t say, “A movie was fun.”

ฉันไม่สามารถพูดได้ว่า “หนังเรื่องหนึ่งสนุก”

That means all movies are fun.

นั่นหมายความว่าภาพยนตร์ทุกเรื่องสนุก

That’s not true.

ที่ไม่เป็นความจริง.

“The movie was fun.”

“หนังเรื่องนี้สนุกดี”

Okay, and I also use ‘the’

โอเค ฉันยังใช้ 'the'

when I’m talking about a noun where there’s only one and only.

เมื่อพูดถึงคำนามที่มีเพียงอันเดียวเท่านั้น

Okay.

ตกลง.

For example, there’s only one sun.

เช่น มีดวงอาทิตย์เพียงดวงเดียว

Okay, when I look at the sky, there’s only one sun.

โอเค เมื่อมองท้องฟ้ามีดวงอาทิตย์เพียงดวงเดียว

So, I say, “The sun.”

ดังนั้นฉันจึงพูดว่า "ดวงอาทิตย์"

“The sun is hot.”

“แดดมันร้อนนะ”

I cannot say, “A sun.”

ฉันไม่สามารถพูดได้ว่า "ดวงอาทิตย์"

That’s wrong.

นั่นผิด.

When there’s one and only, we say, “The sun.”

เมื่อมีเพียงหนึ่งเดียว เราก็พูดว่า “ดวงอาทิตย์”

Okay.

Let’s look at some more examples.

The first example says, “A lion is dangerous.”

I have to use ‘a’ because I’m talking about any one lion.

ฉันต้องใช้ 'a' เพราะฉันกำลังพูดถึงสิงโตตัวใดตัวหนึ่ง

Any lion is dangerous.

สิงโตตัวไหนก็อันตราย

All lions are dangerous.

สิงโตทุกตัวเป็นอันตราย

So, I use ‘a’.

The next sentence says, “It’s a dog.”

ประโยคถัดไปพูดว่า “มันเป็นสุนัข”

I’m talking about this dog for the first time, so I use ‘a’.

Now, I’m talking about this dog for the second time.

So, I say, “The dog is cute.”

Okay.

Here’s a similar example.

นี่เป็นตัวอย่างที่คล้ายกัน

“It’s an ant.”

“มันเป็นมด”

Well, I used ‘an’ because we have ‘ant’, which start with a vowel.

ฉันใช้ 'an' เพราะเรามี 'ant' ซึ่งขึ้นต้นด้วยเสียงสระ

And I’m talking about this ant for the first time.

และฉันกำลังพูดถึงมดตัวนี้เป็นครั้งแรก

“It’s an ant.”

“มันเป็นมด”

Now, I’m talking about this ant again.

ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังพูดถึงมดตัวนี้อีกครั้ง

“The ant is small.”

“มดมันตัวเล็ก”

“The ant…”, this one, “…is small.”

“มด…” อันนี้ “…ตัวเล็ก”

Okay, and the last one.

โอเค และอันสุดท้าย

“It’s the moon.”

“มันคือพระจันทร์”

I have to say, “the moon” because there’s only one moon.

ต้องบอกว่า “พระจันทร์” เพราะมีพระจันทร์ดวงเดียว

I cannot say, “a moon”.

ฉันไม่สามารถพูดได้ว่า "ดวงจันทร์"

“It’s the moon.

“มันคือดวงจันทร์

The moon…”, only one, “…is round.”

พระจันทร์…” มีเพียงดวงเดียว “…กลม”

Okay.

ตกลง.

Let’s look at some more examples.

Okay, we have some more examples,

but this time I want you to think about whether we should put ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’.

แต่คราวนี้ผมอยากให้คุณคิดว่าเราควรใส่ 'a', 'an' หรือ 'the'

Okay.

ตกลง.

So, “I see ____ desk and ___ chair.”

ดังนั้น “ฉันเห็นโต๊ะ ____ และเก้าอี้ ___”

We don’t know which desk and chair.

เราไม่รู้ว่าโต๊ะเก้าอี้ตัวไหน

And it’s the first time I’m talking about them.

So, we have to put ‘a’.

“I see a desk and a chair.”

So, do I put ‘a’ or ‘an’?

Well here we have the vowel ‘o’.

So we have to put “‘an’ octopus”.

ดังนั้นเราจึงต้องใส่ "ปลาหมึกยักษ์"

“I see an octopus.”

“ฉันเห็นปลาหมึกยักษ์”

Okay, the next one.

โอเค อันถัดไป

“It’s ___ pen.”

“มันคือ ___ ปากกา”

Okay, it’s the same.

โอเค มันก็เหมือนกัน

It’s the first time, so I say, “a pen”.

นี่เป็นครั้งแรก ฉันก็เลยพูดว่า "ปากกา"

Now, I’m talking about the pen for the second time.

ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังพูดถึงปากกาเป็นครั้งที่สอง

So I say, “The pen is red.”

ฉันจึงพูดว่า “ปากกาเป็นสีแดง”

Okay, I’m talking about this one.

โอเค ฉันกำลังพูดถึงเรื่องนี้

So I say, “the”.

ฉันจึงพูดว่า "ที่"

Okay, similarly…

โอเค ในทำนองเดียวกัน…

“She is ____ girl.”

“เธอเป็น ____ เด็กผู้หญิง”

What do I say?

ฉันพูดอะไร?

“a girl.”

"หญิงสาวคนหนึ่ง."

We’re talking about her for the first time.

เรากำลังพูดถึงเธอเป็นครั้งแรก

Okay.

ตกลง.

And now we’re talking about this girl again, for the second time.

และตอนนี้เรากำลังพูดถึงผู้หญิงคนนี้อีกครั้ง เป็นครั้งที่สอง

So, I have to say, “The girl is pretty.”

เลยต้องบอกว่า "สาวคนนี้สวย"

And the last example.

และตัวอย่างสุดท้าย

“I can see ___ sky.”

“ฉันเห็น ___ ท้องฟ้า”

Now, we only have one sky.

ตอนนี้เรามีท้องฟ้าเพียงแห่งเดียว

Right…

So, if there’s only one and only, we have to put the article ‘the’.

ครับ...

ถ้ามีอันเดียวก็ต้องใส่บทความ 'the' ครับ

“I can see the sky.”

“ฉันเห็นท้องฟ้า”

Okay.
