In this video, we’re going to talk about the articles; ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’.

このビデオでは、記事について説明します。 「a」、「an」、「the」。

Now this can be very confusing, so please make sure you pay careful attention.

これは非常に混乱を招く可能性があるため、十分に注意してください。

We use articles in front of nouns.

名詞の前に冠詞を使います。

Okay, so remember that and let’s look at the board.

さて、それを思い出してボードを見てみましょう。

First, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about any one thing.

まず、私たちは何か 1 つのことについて話すときに「a」または「an」を使用します。

For example, let’s say I say, “A banana is delicious.”

たとえば、「バナナはおいしいです」と言ったとしましょう。

Okay, that means all bananas.

はい、それはすべてバナナを意味します。

Any banana is delicious.

どのバナナも美味しいです。

“A banana is delicious.”

「バナナはおいしいよ。」

Okay, let’s jump over here.

よし、ここに飛び移ろう。

If I’m talking about a specific banana…

具体的なバナナについて言えば…

maybe I have a banana in my hand.

手にバナナを持っているかもしれません。

It’s specific, not any banana, this one.

これはバナナではなく、特定のものです。

I have to use ‘the’,

「バナナは古い」という意味

“The banana is old.”

で「the」を使わなければなりません

Okay. This one.

。 わかった。これです。

I can’t say, “A banana is old.”

「バナナは古い」とは言えません。

Then that means all bananas are old.

ということは、バナナはすべて古いということになります。

And that’s not true. Just this one.

それは真実ではありません。これだけ。

So, I say, “The banana is old.”

そこで私は、「バナナは古い」と言います。

Okay, let’s move over here.

さて、ここに移りましょう。

We also use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about something for the first time.

初めて何かについて話すときも、「a」または「an」を使います。

So, I have another example here.

そこで、別の例をここに示します。

“I watched a movie.”

"私は映画を観ました。"

Okay.

I’m talking about this movie for the first time, so I have to use “…a movie”.

わかった。

初めてこの映画について話すので、「…映画」を使わなければなりません。

But, if I want to talk about this movie again,

でも、この映画についてもう一度話したいとしても、

for the second time, or the third time or fourth, fifth…

2回目でも、3回目でも、4回目でも、5回目でも…

it doesn’t matter.

それは問題ではありません。

I have to use ‘the’.

「the」を使わなければなりません。

“The movie was fun.”

「映画は楽しかったです。」

I’m talking about this one. The specific.

私はこれについて話しています。具体的な。

“The movie was fun.”

「映画は楽しかったです。」

I can’t say, “A movie was fun.”

「映画は面白かった」とは言えません。

That means all movies are fun.

つまり、どの映画も面白いということです。

That’s not true.

それは真実ではない。

“The movie was fun.”

「映画は楽しかったです。」

Okay, and I also use ‘the’

そうですね、私

when I’m talking about a noun where there’s only one and only.

は 1 つだけしか存在しない名詞について話しているときにも「the」を使います。

Okay.

わかった。

For example, there’s only one sun.

たとえば、太陽は一つしかありません。

Okay, when I look at the sky, there’s only one sun.

さて、空を見ると太陽が一つしかありません。

So, I say, “The sun.”

そこで私は「太陽」と言います。

“The sun is hot.”

"太陽は熱い。"

I cannot say, “A sun.”

「太陽」とは言えません。

That’s wrong.

それは間違っている。

When there’s one and only, we say, “The sun.”

唯一無二のものがあるとき、私たちは「太陽」と言います。

Okay.

わかった。

Let’s look at some more examples.

さらにいくつかの例を見てみましょう。

The first example says, “A lion is dangerous.”

最初の例は「ライオンは危険だ」と言っています。

I have to use ‘a’ because I’m talking about any one lion.

私は 1 頭のライオンについて話しているので、「a」を使用する必要があります。

Any lion is dangerous.

どのライオンも危険です。

All lions are dangerous.

すべてのライオンは危険です。

So, I use ‘a’.

したがって、「a」を使用します。

The next sentence says, “It’s a dog.”

次の文は「それは犬です。」

I’m talking about this dog for the first time, so I use ‘a’.

初めてこの犬について話すので、「a」を使用します。

Now, I’m talking about this dog for the second time.

さて、この犬について話すのは二回目です。

So, I say, “The dog is cute.”

そこで私は「犬はかわいい」と言います。

Okay.

わかった。

Here’s a similar example.

同様の例を次に示します。

“It’s an ant.”

「アリだよ。」

Well, I used ‘an’ because we have ‘ant’, which start with a vowel.

そうですね、「an」を使用したのは、母音で始まる「ant」があるからです。

And I’m talking about this ant for the first time.

そして、私は初めてこのアリについて話します。

“It’s an ant.”

「アリだよ。」

Now, I’m talking about this ant again.

さて、またこのアリの話です。

“The ant is small.”

「アリは小さいですね。」

“The ant…”, this one, “…is small.”

「アリは…」、これは「…小さいですね」

Okay, and the last one.

さて、最後です。

“It’s the moon.”

「それは月です。」

I have to say, “the moon” because there’s only one moon.

月は一つしかないので、「月」と言わざるを得ません。

I cannot say, “a moon”.

「月」とは言えません。

“It’s the moon.

「それは月です。

The moon…”, only one, “…is round.”

月は…」、ただ一つ、「…は丸い」。

Okay.

わかった。

Let’s look at some more examples.

さらにいくつかの例を見てみましょう。

Okay, we have some more examples,

他にも例はあります

but this time I want you to think about whether we should put ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’.

が、今回は「a」、「an」、または「the」のどれを置くべきかを考えてもらいたいと思います。

Okay.

So, “I see ____ desk and ___ chair.”

つまり、「○○机と○○椅子が見えます。」

We don’t know which desk and chair.

どの机と椅子かわかりません。

And it’s the first time I’m talking about them.

So, we have to put ‘a’.

“I see a desk and a chair.”

「机と椅子が見えます。」

The next one.

“I see ____ octopus.”

「○○タコが見えます。」

Okay, this is the same.

It’s the first time I’m talking about this octopus.

このタコについて話すのは初めてです。

So, do I put ‘a’ or ‘an’?

では、「a」を入れるか「an」を入れるか？

Well here we have the vowel ‘o’.

さて、ここには母音「o」があります。

So we have to put “‘an’ octopus”.

したがって、「「an」タコ」を入れる必要があります。

“I see an octopus.”

「タコが見えます。」

Okay, the next one.

さて、次です。

“It’s ___ pen.”

「＿＿ペンです。」

Okay, it’s the same.

わかりました、それは同じです。

It’s the first time, so I say, “a pen”.

初めてなので「ペン」と言います。

Now, I’m talking about the pen for the second time.

さて、二度目のペンの話です。

So I say, “The pen is red.”

そこで私は「ペンは赤です」と言います。

Okay, I’m talking about this one.

さて、私はこれについて話しています。

So I say, “the”.

だから私は「その」と言います。

Okay, similarly…

そうですね、同様に…

“She is ____ girl.”

「彼女は___の女の子です。」

What do I say?

何と言えばいいでしょうか？

“a girl.”

"女の子。"

We’re talking about her for the first time.

彼女について初めて話します。

Okay.

わかった。

And now we’re talking about this girl again, for the second time.

そして今、私たちは再びこの女の子について話しています、二度目です。

So, I have to say, “The girl is pretty.”

だから、「その女の子はかわいい」と言わざるを得ません。

And the last example.

そして最後の例。

“I can see ___ sky.”

「__の空が見えます。」

Now, we only have one sky.

今、空は一つしかありません。

Right…

So, if there’s only one and only, we have to put the article ‘the’.

そうですね…

つまり、唯一のものがある場合は、冠詞「the」を付けなければなりません。

“I can see the sky.”

「空が見えるよ。」

Okay.

わかった。
