Hi, everybody.

In this video, we’re going to talk about the articles; ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’.

या व्हिडिओमध्ये, आम्ही लेखांबद्दल बोलणार आहोत; 'a', 'an' आणि 'the'.

Now this can be very confusing, so please make sure you pay careful attention.

We use articles in front of nouns.

Okay, so remember that and let’s look at the board.

First, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about any one thing.

For example, let’s say I say, “A banana is delicious.”

Okay, that means all bananas.

Any banana is delicious.

Okay, let’s jump over here.

If I’m talking about a specific banana…

maybe I have a banana in my hand.

It’s specific, not any banana, this one.

हे विशिष्ट आहे, हे कोणतेही केळे नाही.

I have to use ‘the’,

मला 'द' वापरावे लागेल,

“The banana is old.”

"केळी जुनी आहे."

Okay. This one.

ठीक आहे. हा एक.

I can’t say, “A banana is old.”

मी म्हणू शकत नाही, "केळी जुनी आहे."

Then that means all bananas are old.

मग याचा अर्थ सर्व केळी जुनी आहेत.

And that’s not true. Just this one.

आणि ते खरे नाही. फक्त हे एक.

So, I say, “The banana is old.”

म्हणून, मी म्हणतो, "केळी जुनी आहे."

Okay, let’s move over here.

We also use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about something for the first time.

जेव्हा आपण प्रथमच एखाद्या गोष्टीबद्दल बोलत असतो तेव्हा आपण 'a' किंवा 'an' देखील वापरतो.

So, I have another example here.

तर, माझ्याकडे आणखी एक उदाहरण आहे.

“I watched a movie.”

Okay.

I’m talking about this movie for the first time, so I have to use “…a movie”.

ठीक आहे.

मी या चित्रपटाबद्दल प्रथमच बोलत आहे, म्हणून मला “…a movie” वापरावे लागेल.

But, if I want to talk about this movie again,

पण, मला या सिनेमाबद्दल पुन्हा बोलायचं असेल,

for the second time, or the third time or fourth, fifth…

it doesn’t matter.

I have to use ‘the’.

“The movie was fun.”

I’m talking about this one. The specific.

मी याबद्दल बोलत आहे. विशिष्ट.

“The movie was fun.”

"चित्रपट मजेशीर होता."

I can’t say, “A movie was fun.”

मी म्हणू शकत नाही, "एक चित्रपट मजेदार होता."

That means all movies are fun.

म्हणजे सगळे चित्रपट मजेशीर असतात.

That’s not true.

ते खरे नाही.

“The movie was fun.”

"चित्रपट मजेशीर होता."

Okay, and I also use ‘the’

ठीक आहे, आणि मी 'the' देखील वापरतो

when I’m talking about a noun where there’s only one and only.

जेव्हा मी एखाद्या संज्ञाबद्दल बोलत असतो जिथे फक्त एकच असते.

Okay.

ठीक आहे.

For example, there’s only one sun.

उदाहरणार्थ, एकच सूर्य आहे.

Okay, when I look at the sky, there’s only one sun.

So, I say, “The sun.”

“The sun is hot.”

I cannot say, “A sun.”

That’s wrong.

When there’s one and only, we say, “The sun.”

Okay.

Let’s look at some more examples.

आणखी काही उदाहरणे पाहू.

The first example says, “A lion is dangerous.”

पहिले उदाहरण म्हणते, "सिंह धोकादायक आहे."

I have to use ‘a’ because I’m talking about any one lion.

मला 'अ' वापरावे लागेल कारण मी कोणत्याही एका शेराबद्दल बोलत आहे.

Any lion is dangerous.

कोणताही सिंह धोकादायक असतो.

All lions are dangerous.

सर्व सिंह धोकादायक आहेत.

So, I use ‘a’.

म्हणून, मी 'a' वापरतो.

The next sentence says, “It’s a dog.”

पुढील वाक्य म्हणते, "हा कुत्रा आहे."

I’m talking about this dog for the first time, so I use ‘a’.

मी या कुत्र्याबद्दल प्रथमच बोलत आहे, म्हणून मी 'a' वापरतो.

Now, I’m talking about this dog for the second time.

आता, मी दुसऱ्यांदा या कुत्र्याबद्दल बोलत आहे.

So, I say, “The dog is cute.”

Okay.

Here’s a similar example.

“It’s an ant.”

"ती एक मुंगी आहे."

Well, I used ‘an’ because we have ‘ant’, which start with a vowel.

बरं, मी 'अन' वापरला कारण आपल्याकडे 'मुंगी' आहे, जी स्वरापासून सुरू होते.

And I’m talking about this ant for the first time.

आणि मी या मुंगीबद्दल प्रथमच बोलत आहे.

“It’s an ant.”

Now, I’m talking about this ant again.

“The ant is small.”

“The ant…”, this one, “…is small.”

“मुंगी…”, ही एक, “…लहान आहे.”

Okay, and the last one.

“It’s the moon.”

I have to say, “the moon” because there’s only one moon.

I cannot say, “a moon”.

“It’s the moon.

The moon…”, only one, “…is round.”

Let’s look at some more examples.

Okay, we have some more examples,

but this time I want you to think about whether we should put ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’.

So, “I see ____ desk and ___ chair.”

We don’t know which desk and chair.

And it’s the first time I’m talking about them.

So, we have to put ‘a’.

“I see a desk and a chair.”

Okay, this is the same.

So, do I put ‘a’ or ‘an’?

Well here we have the vowel ‘o’.

“It’s ___ pen.”

Okay, it’s the same.

It’s the first time, so I say, “a pen”.

Now, I’m talking about the pen for the second time.

So I say, “The pen is red.”

Okay, I’m talking about this one.

Okay, similarly…

What do I say?

“a girl.”

We’re talking about her for the first time.

आम्ही तिच्याबद्दल पहिल्यांदाच बोलत आहोत.

Okay.

ठीक आहे.

And now we’re talking about this girl again, for the second time.

आणि आता आम्ही पुन्हा दुसऱ्यांदा या मुलीबद्दल बोलत आहोत.

So, I have to say, “The girl is pretty.”

म्हणून, मला म्हणायचे आहे, "मुलगी सुंदर आहे."

And the last example.

आणि शेवटचे उदाहरण.

“I can see ___ sky.”

"मी ___ आकाश पाहू शकतो."

Now, we only have one sky.

आता आमच्याकडे फक्त एकच आकाश आहे.

Right…

So, if there’s only one and only, we have to put the article ‘the’.

बरोबर...

“I can see the sky.”
