In this video, we’re going to talk about the articles; ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’.

આ વિડિઓમાં, અમે લેખો વિશે વાત કરવા જઈ રહ્યા છીએ; 'a', 'an' અને 'the'.

Now this can be very confusing, so please make sure you pay careful attention.

હવે આ ખૂબ જ ગૂંચવણભર્યું હોઈ શકે છે, તેથી કૃપા કરીને ખાતરી કરો કે તમે સાવચેતીપૂર્વક ધ્યાન આપો છો.

We use articles in front of nouns.

આપણે સંજ્ઞાઓની આગળ લેખોનો ઉપયોગ કરીએ છીએ.

Okay, so remember that and let’s look at the board.

First, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about any one thing.

For example, let’s say I say, “A banana is delicious.”

Okay, that means all bananas.

Okay, let’s jump over here.

If I’m talking about a specific banana…

જો હું ચોક્કસ કેળા વિશે વાત કરી રહ્યો છું…

maybe I have a banana in my hand.

કદાચ મારા હાથમાં કેળું છે.

It’s specific, not any banana, this one.

તે ચોક્કસ છે, કોઈ કેળા નથી, આ એક.

I have to use ‘the’,

મારે 'the' નો ઉપયોગ કરવો પડશે,

“The banana is old.”

"કેળું જૂનું છે."

Okay. This one.

બરાબર. આ એક.

I can’t say, “A banana is old.”

હું કહી શકતો નથી, "એક કેળું જૂનું છે."

Then that means all bananas are old.

તો તેનો અર્થ એ કે બધા કેળા જૂના છે.

And that’s not true. Just this one.

અને તે સાચું નથી. બસ આ એક.

So, I say, “The banana is old.”

તેથી, હું કહું છું, "કેળું જૂનું છે."

Okay, let’s move over here.

ઠીક છે, ચાલો અહીંથી આગળ વધીએ.

We also use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about something for the first time.

જ્યારે આપણે કોઈ વસ્તુ વિશે પહેલીવાર વાત કરી રહ્યા હોઈએ ત્યારે પણ આપણે 'a' અથવા 'an' નો ઉપયોગ કરીએ છીએ.

So, I have another example here.

“I watched a movie.”

"મેં એક મૂવી જોઈ."

Okay.

I’m talking about this movie for the first time, so I have to use “…a movie”.

બરાબર.

હું આ મૂવી વિશે પહેલીવાર વાત કરી રહ્યો છું, તેથી મારે “…a movie” નો ઉપયોગ કરવો પડશે.

But, if I want to talk about this movie again,

પણ, જો મારે આ ફિલ્મ વિશે ફરીવાર વાત કરવી હોય તો

for the second time, or the third time or fourth, fifth…

બીજીવાર, કે ત્રીજી વખત કે ચોથી, પાંચમી વખત…

it doesn’t matter.

I have to use ‘the’.

મારે 'the' નો ઉપયોગ કરવો પડશે.

“The movie was fun.”

"ફિલ્મ મજાની હતી."

I’m talking about this one. The specific.

હું આ વિશે વાત કરું છું. ચોક્કસ.

“The movie was fun.”

"ફિલ્મ મજાની હતી."

I can’t say, “A movie was fun.”

હું કહી શકતો નથી, "એક મૂવી મજાની હતી."

That means all movies are fun.

એટલે કે બધી ફિલ્મો મજાની હોય છે.

That’s not true.

તે સાચું નથી.

“The movie was fun.”

"ફિલ્મ મજાની હતી."

Okay, and I also use ‘the’

ઠીક છે, અને હું પણ 'the' નો ઉપયોગ કરું છું

when I’m talking about a noun where there’s only one and only.

જ્યારે હું એવી સંજ્ઞા વિશે વાત કરું છું જ્યાં માત્ર એક અને માત્ર હોય.

Okay.

બરાબર.

For example, there’s only one sun.

ઉદાહરણ તરીકે, ત્યાં માત્ર એક જ સૂર્ય છે.

Okay, when I look at the sky, there’s only one sun.

So, I say, “The sun.”

“The sun is hot.”

I cannot say, “A sun.”

That’s wrong.

When there’s one and only, we say, “The sun.”

Let’s look at some more examples.

The first example says, “A lion is dangerous.”

I have to use ‘a’ because I’m talking about any one lion.

All lions are dangerous.

The next sentence says, “It’s a dog.”

I’m talking about this dog for the first time, so I use ‘a’.

Now, I’m talking about this dog for the second time.

So, I say, “The dog is cute.”

Okay.

Here’s a similar example.

“It’s an ant.”

Well, I used ‘an’ because we have ‘ant’, which start with a vowel.

સારું, મેં 'an' નો ઉપયોગ કર્યો કારણ કે આપણી પાસે 'ant' છે, જે સ્વરથી શરૂ થાય છે.

And I’m talking about this ant for the first time.

Now, I’m talking about this ant again.

“The ant is small.”

“The ant…”, this one, “…is small.”

Okay, and the last one.

I have to say, “the moon” because there’s only one moon.

So, do I put ‘a’ or ‘an’?

Well here we have the vowel ‘o’.

સારું અહીં આપણી પાસે 'o' સ્વર છે.

So we have to put “‘an’ octopus”.

તેથી આપણે "'an' ઓક્ટોપસ" મૂકવું પડશે.

“I see an octopus.”

"હું એક ઓક્ટોપસ જોઉં છું."

Okay, the next one.

It’s the first time, so I say, “a pen”.

So I say, “The pen is red.”

Okay, similarly…

“She is ____ girl.”

"તે ____ છોકરી છે."

What do I say?

હું શું કહું?

“a girl.”

"છોકરી."

We’re talking about her for the first time.

અમે પ્રથમ વખત તેના વિશે વાત કરી રહ્યા છીએ.

Okay.

બરાબર.

And now we’re talking about this girl again, for the second time.

અને હવે અમે ફરીથી આ છોકરી વિશે બીજી વાર વાત કરી રહ્યા છીએ.

So, I have to say, “The girl is pretty.”

તેથી, મારે કહેવું પડશે, "છોકરી સુંદર છે."

And the last example.

અને છેલ્લું ઉદાહરણ.

“I can see ___ sky.”

"હું ___ આકાશ જોઈ શકું છું."

Now, we only have one sky.

હવે આપણી પાસે એક જ આકાશ છે.

Right…

So, if there’s only one and only, we have to put the article ‘the’.

ખરું...

તો, જો ત્યાં માત્ર એક જ હોય, તો આપણે લેખ 'the' મૂકવો પડશે.

“I can see the sky.”

"હું આકાશ જોઈ શકું છું."
