In this video, we’re going to talk about the articles; ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’.

Now this can be very confusing, so please make sure you pay careful attention.

We use articles in front of nouns.

First, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about any one thing.

If I’m talking about a specific banana…

ഞാൻ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക വാഴപ്പഴത്തെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നതെങ്കിൽ,

maybe I have a banana in my hand.

എന്റെ കയ്യിൽ ഒരു വാഴപ്പഴം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കാം.

It’s specific, not any banana, this one.

ഇത് പ്രത്യേകമാണ്, ഏതെങ്കിലും വാഴപ്പഴമല്ല, ഇത്.

I have to use ‘the’,

എനിക്ക് 'ദ' ഉപയോഗിക്കണം,

“The banana is old.”

Okay. This one.

I can’t say, “A banana is old.”

Then that means all bananas are old.

And that’s not true. Just this one.

So, I say, “The banana is old.”

Okay, let’s move over here.

We also use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about something for the first time.

So, I have another example here.

അതിനാൽ, എനിക്ക് ഇവിടെ മറ്റൊരു ഉദാഹരണമുണ്ട്.

“I watched a movie.”

"ഞാൻ ഒരു സിനിമ കണ്ടു."

Okay.

I’m talking about this movie for the first time, so I have to use “…a movie”.

ശരി.

ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായി ഈ സിനിമയെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കുന്നു, അതിനാൽ എനിക്ക് “…ഒരു സിനിമ” ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു.

But, if I want to talk about this movie again,

for the second time, or the third time or fourth, fifth…

it doesn’t matter.

I have to use ‘the’.

I’m talking about this one. The specific.

“The movie was fun.”

"സിനിമ രസകരമായിരുന്നു."

I can’t say, “A movie was fun.”

“ഒരു സിനിമ രസകരമായിരുന്നു” എന്ന് എനിക്ക് പറയാനാവില്ല.

That means all movies are fun.

അതായത് എല്ലാ സിനിമകളും രസകരമാണ്.

That’s not true.

അത് സത്യമല്ല.

“The movie was fun.”

"സിനിമ രസകരമായിരുന്നു."

Okay, and I also use ‘the’

ശരി,

when I’m talking about a noun where there’s only one and only.

ഒരേയൊരു നാമം മാത്രമുള്ള ഒരു നാമത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാനും 'ദ' ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

Okay.

ശരി.

For example, there’s only one sun.

ഉദാഹരണത്തിന്, ഒരു സൂര്യൻ മാത്രമേയുള്ളൂ.

Okay, when I look at the sky, there’s only one sun.

ശരി, ഞാൻ ആകാശത്തേക്ക് നോക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു സൂര്യൻ മാത്രമേയുള്ളൂ.

So, I say, “The sun.”

അതിനാൽ, ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു, "സൂര്യൻ."

“The sun is hot.”

"സൂര്യൻ ചൂടാണ്."

I cannot say, “A sun.”

"ഒരു സൂര്യൻ" എന്ന് എനിക്ക് പറയാൻ കഴിയില്ല.

That’s wrong.

അത് െതറ്റാണ്.

When there’s one and only, we say, “The sun.”

ഒന്നു മാത്രം ഉള്ളപ്പോൾ നമ്മൾ പറയും, "സൂര്യൻ".

Let’s look at some more examples.

The first example says, “A lion is dangerous.”

I have to use ‘a’ because I’m talking about any one lion.

So, I use ‘a’.

The next sentence says, “It’s a dog.”

അടുത്ത വാചകം പറയുന്നു, "ഇതൊരു നായയാണ്."

I’m talking about this dog for the first time, so I use ‘a’.

ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായി ഈ നായയെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കുന്നു, അതിനാൽ ഞാൻ 'എ' ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

Now, I’m talking about this dog for the second time.

ഇപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ ഈ നായയെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് രണ്ടാമതും സംസാരിക്കുന്നത്.

So, I say, “The dog is cute.”

അതിനാൽ, ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു, "നായ സുന്ദരനാണ്."

Okay.

Here’s a similar example.

സമാനമായ ഒരു ഉദാഹരണം ഇതാ.

“It’s an ant.”

Well, I used ‘an’ because we have ‘ant’, which start with a vowel.

ശരി, സ്വരാക്ഷരത്തിൽ തുടങ്ങുന്ന 'ഉറുമ്പ്' ഉള്ളതിനാൽ ഞാൻ 'ആൻ' ഉപയോഗിച്ചു.

And I’m talking about this ant for the first time.

പിന്നെ ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായി ഈ ഉറുമ്പിനെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നു.

“It’s an ant.”

"അതൊരു ഉറുമ്പാണ്."

Now, I’m talking about this ant again.

ഇപ്പോഴിതാ ഞാൻ വീണ്ടും ഈ ഉറുമ്പിനെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നു.

“The ant is small.”

"ഉറുമ്പ് ചെറുതാണ്."

“The ant…”, this one, “…is small.”

“ഉറുമ്പ്…”, ഇത്, “... ചെറുതാണ്.”

Okay, and the last one.

ശരി, അവസാനത്തേതും.

“It’s the moon.”

"ഇത് ചന്ദ്രനാണ്."

I have to say, “the moon” because there’s only one moon.

"ചന്ദ്രൻ" എന്ന് ഞാൻ പറയണം, കാരണം ഒരു ചന്ദ്രൻ മാത്രമേ ഉള്ളൂ.

I cannot say, “a moon”.

"ഒരു ചന്ദ്രൻ" എന്ന് എനിക്ക് പറയാൻ കഴിയില്ല.

“It’s the moon.

“ഇത് ചന്ദ്രനാണ്.

The moon…”, only one, “…is round.”

ചന്ദ്രൻ…”, ഒന്ന് മാത്രം, “...വൃത്തമാണ്.”

Let’s look at some more examples.

but this time I want you to think about whether we should put ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’.

We don’t know which desk and chair.

And it’s the first time I’m talking about them.

So, we have to put ‘a’.

“I see a desk and a chair.”

The next one.

അടുത്തത്.

“I see ____ octopus.”

"ഞാൻ ____ ഒക്ടോപസ് കാണുന്നു."

Okay, this is the same.

ശരി, ഇതുതന്നെ.

It’s the first time I’m talking about this octopus.

ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായിട്ടാണ് ഈ നീരാളിയെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നത്.

So, do I put ‘a’ or ‘an’?

അപ്പോൾ, ഞാൻ 'a' അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'an' ഇടണോ?

Well here we have the vowel ‘o’.

ശരി ഇവിടെ നമുക്ക് 'o' എന്ന സ്വരാക്ഷരമുണ്ട്.

So we have to put “‘an’ octopus”.

അതുകൊണ്ട് നമ്മൾ "'ആൻ' ഒക്ടോപസ്" ഇടണം.

“I see an octopus.”

"ഞാൻ ഒരു നീരാളിയെ കാണുന്നു."

Okay, the next one.

ശരി, അടുത്തത്.

“It’s ___ pen.”

"ഇത് ___ പേനയാണ്."

Okay, it’s the same.

ശരി, അതുതന്നെ.

It’s the first time, so I say, “a pen”.

ഇത് ആദ്യമായാണ്, അതിനാൽ ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു, "ഒരു പേന".

Now, I’m talking about the pen for the second time.

ഇപ്പോൾ, ഞാൻ രണ്ടാമതും പേനയെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.

So I say, “The pen is red.”

“She is ____ girl.”

“അവൾ ____ പെൺകുട്ടിയാണ്.”

What do I say?

ഞാൻ എന്താണ് പറയുക?

“a girl.”

"ഒരു പെണ്കുട്ടി."

We’re talking about her for the first time.

ഞങ്ങൾ അവളെക്കുറിച്ച് ആദ്യമായി സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.

Okay.

ശരി.

And now we’re talking about this girl again, for the second time.

ഇപ്പോൾ ഞങ്ങൾ ഈ പെൺകുട്ടിയെക്കുറിച്ച് വീണ്ടും സംസാരിക്കുന്നു, രണ്ടാമതും.

So, I have to say, “The girl is pretty.”

അതിനാൽ, "പെൺകുട്ടി സുന്ദരിയാണ്" എന്ന് എനിക്ക് പറയേണ്ടി വരും.

And the last example.

ഒപ്പം അവസാനത്തെ ഉദാഹരണവും.

“I can see ___ sky.”

"എനിക്ക് ___ ആകാശം കാണാം."

Now, we only have one sky.

ഇപ്പോൾ നമുക്ക് ഒരു ആകാശമേ ഉള്ളൂ.

Right…

So, if there’s only one and only, we have to put the article ‘the’.

ശരിയാണ്...

അതുകൊണ്ട്, ഒന്നുമാത്രമേ ഉള്ളൂവെങ്കിൽ, നമുക്ക് 'the' എന്ന ലേഖനം നൽകണം.

“I can see the sky.”

"എനിക്ക് ആകാശം കാണാം."
