In this video, we’re going to talk about the articles; ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’.

এই ভিডিওতে, আমরা নিবন্ধগুলি সম্পর্কে কথা বলতে যাচ্ছি; 'a', 'an' এবং 'the'।

Now this can be very confusing, so please make sure you pay careful attention.

এখন এটি খুব বিভ্রান্তিকর হতে পারে, তাই দয়া করে নিশ্চিত করুন যে আপনি সাবধানে মনোযোগ দিয়েছেন।

We use articles in front of nouns.

Okay, so remember that and let’s look at the board.

First, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about any one thing.

For example, let’s say I say, “A banana is delicious.”

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, ধরা যাক আমি বলি, "একটি কলা সুস্বাদু।"

Okay, that means all bananas.

Any banana is delicious.

যেকোনো কলা সুস্বাদু।

“A banana is delicious.”

Okay, let’s jump over here.

If I’m talking about a specific banana…

আমি যদি একটি নির্দিষ্ট কলার কথা বলি…

maybe I have a banana in my hand.

হয়তো আমার হাতে একটি কলা আছে।

It’s specific, not any banana, this one.

এটা নির্দিষ্ট, কোন কলা নয়, এই এক.

I have to use ‘the’,

আমাকে 'the' ব্যবহার করতে হবে,

“The banana is old.”

"কলা পুরানো।"

Okay. This one.

ঠিক আছে. এইটা.

I can’t say, “A banana is old.”

আমি বলতে পারি না, "একটি কলা পুরানো।"

Then that means all bananas are old.

তাহলে তার মানে সব কলা পুরানো।

And that’s not true. Just this one.

এবং এটা সত্য নয়। শুধু এটা.

So, I say, “The banana is old.”

তাই, আমি বলি, "কলা পুরানো।"

Okay, let’s move over here.

We also use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about something for the first time.

আমরা যখন প্রথমবার কোনো কিছু নিয়ে কথা বলি তখন আমরা 'a' বা 'an' ব্যবহার করি।

So, I have another example here.

সুতরাং, আমি এখানে আরেকটি উদাহরণ আছে.

“I watched a movie.”

"আমি একটি চলচিত্র দেখেছি."

Okay.

I’m talking about this movie for the first time, so I have to use “…a movie”.

ঠিক আছে.

But, if I want to talk about this movie again,

for the second time, or the third time or fourth, fifth…

দ্বিতীয়বার, বা তৃতীয়বার বা চতুর্থ, পঞ্চম…

it doesn’t matter.

I have to use ‘the’.

আমাকে 'the' ব্যবহার করতে হবে।

“The movie was fun.”

"সিনেমাটি মজার ছিল।"

I’m talking about this one. The specific.

আমি এই এক সম্পর্কে কথা বলছি. নির্দিষ্ট.

“The movie was fun.”

"সিনেমাটি মজার ছিল।"

I can’t say, “A movie was fun.”

আমি বলতে পারি না, "একটি সিনেমা মজার ছিল।"

That means all movies are fun.

মানে সব সিনেমাই মজার।

That’s not true.

এটা সত্যি না.

“The movie was fun.”

"সিনেমাটি মজার ছিল।"

Okay, and I also use ‘the’

ঠিক আছে, এবং আমি 'the' ব্যবহার

when I’m talking about a noun where there’s only one and only.

করি যখন আমি একটি বিশেষ্যের কথা বলছি যেখানে শুধুমাত্র একটি এবং শুধুমাত্র আছে।

Okay.

For example, there’s only one sun.

Okay, when I look at the sky, there’s only one sun.

So, I say, “The sun.”

I cannot say, “A sun.”

That’s wrong.

When there’s one and only, we say, “The sun.”

Okay.

Let’s look at some more examples.

The first example says, “A lion is dangerous.”

I have to use ‘a’ because I’m talking about any one lion.

আমাকে 'a' ব্যবহার করতে হবে কারণ আমি যে কোনো একটি সিংহের কথা বলছি।

Any lion is dangerous.

যে কোনো সিংহ বিপজ্জনক।

All lions are dangerous.

সব সিংহই বিপজ্জনক।

So, I use ‘a’.

The next sentence says, “It’s a dog.”

পরের বাক্যটি বলে, "এটি একটি কুকুর।"

I’m talking about this dog for the first time, so I use ‘a’.

আমি প্রথমবারের মতো এই কুকুরটির কথা বলছি, তাই আমি 'a' ব্যবহার করি।

Now, I’m talking about this dog for the second time.

এখন, আমি দ্বিতীয়বার এই কুকুরের কথা বলছি।

So, I say, “The dog is cute.”

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

Here’s a similar example.

এখানে একটি অনুরূপ উদাহরণ.

“It’s an ant.”

"এটি একটি পিঁপড়া।"

Well, I used ‘an’ because we have ‘ant’, which start with a vowel.

ঠিক আছে, আমি 'আন' ব্যবহার করেছি কারণ আমাদের 'পিঁপড়া' আছে, যা একটি স্বর দিয়ে শুরু হয়।

And I’m talking about this ant for the first time.

“It’s an ant.”

Now, I’m talking about this ant again.

এখন, আমি আবার এই পিঁপড়ার কথা বলছি।

“The ant is small.”

“The ant…”, this one, “…is small.”

"পিঁপড়া...", এইটা, "...ছোট।"

Okay, and the last one.

“It’s the moon.”

"এটি চাঁদ।"

I have to say, “the moon” because there’s only one moon.

আমাকে বলতে হবে, "চাঁদ" কারণ একটাই চাঁদ আছে।

I cannot say, “a moon”.

“It’s the moon.

“এটা চাঁদ।

The moon…”, only one, “…is round.”

Okay.

Let’s look at some more examples.

but this time I want you to think about whether we should put ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’.

So, “I see ____ desk and ___ chair.”

So, we have to put ‘a’.

Okay, this is the same.

It’s the first time I’m talking about this octopus.

So, do I put ‘a’ or ‘an’?

Well here we have the vowel ‘o’.

So we have to put “‘an’ octopus”.

“I see an octopus.”

"আমি একটি অক্টোপাস দেখছি।"

Okay, the next one.

“It’s ___ pen.”

"এটি ___ কলম।"

Okay, it’s the same.

ঠিক আছে, এটা একই.

It’s the first time, so I say, “a pen”.

এটি প্রথমবার, তাই আমি বলি, "একটি কলম"।

Now, I’m talking about the pen for the second time.

এখন, আমি দ্বিতীয়বার কলমের কথা বলছি।

So I say, “The pen is red.”

তাই আমি বলি, "কলমটি লাল।"

Okay, I’m talking about this one.

So I say, “the”.

Okay, similarly…

“She is ____ girl.”

What do I say?

“a girl.”

"একটি মেয়ে."

We’re talking about her for the first time.

আমরা প্রথমবার তার সম্পর্কে কথা বলছি.

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

And now we’re talking about this girl again, for the second time.

এবং এখন আমরা দ্বিতীয়বার এই মেয়েটির কথা বলছি।

So, I have to say, “The girl is pretty.”

তাই, আমাকে বলতে হবে, "মেয়েটি সুন্দর।"

And the last example.

এবং শেষ উদাহরণ।

“I can see ___ sky.”

"আমি ___ আকাশ দেখতে পাচ্ছি।"

Now, we only have one sky.

এখন, আমাদের একটাই আকাশ আছে।

Right…

So, if there’s only one and only, we have to put the article ‘the’.

ঠিক আছে...

সুতরাং, যদি শুধুমাত্র একটি এবং শুধুমাত্র থাকে, তাহলে আমাদের নিবন্ধটি 'the' রাখতে হবে।

“I can see the sky.”
