In this video, we’re going to talk about the articles; ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’.

Neste vídeo vamos falar sobre os artigos; 'um', 'uma' e 'o'.

Now this can be very confusing, so please make sure you pay careful attention.

Agora, isso pode ser muito confuso, portanto, preste muita atenção.

We use articles in front of nouns.

Usamos artigos antes de substantivos.

Okay, so remember that and let’s look at the board.

Ok, então lembre-se disso e vamos dar uma olhada no quadro.

First, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about any one thing.

Primeiro, usamos 'a' ou 'an' quando falamos sobre qualquer coisa.

For example, let’s say I say, “A banana is delicious.”

Por exemplo, digamos que eu diga: “Uma banana é deliciosa”.

Okay, that means all bananas.

Ok, isso significa todas as bananas.

Any banana is delicious.

“A banana is delicious.”

“Uma banana é deliciosa.”

If I’m talking about a specific banana…

Se estou falando de uma banana específica…

maybe I have a banana in my hand.

talvez eu tenha uma banana na mão.

It’s specific, not any banana, this one.

É específico, não é qualquer banana, esta.

I have to use ‘the’,

Eu tenho que usar 'o',

“The banana is old.”

“A banana está velha”.

Okay. This one.

OK. Este.

I can’t say, “A banana is old.”

Não posso dizer: “Uma banana está velha”.

Then that means all bananas are old.

Então isso significa que todas as bananas estão velhas.

And that’s not true. Just this one.

E isso não é verdade. Apenas este.

So, I say, “The banana is old.”

Então eu digo: “A banana está velha”.

Okay, let’s move over here.

Ok, vamos passar por aqui.

We also use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when we’re talking about something for the first time.

Também usamos 'a' ou 'an' quando falamos sobre algo pela primeira vez.

So, I have another example here.

Então, tenho outro exemplo aqui.

“I watched a movie.”

"Eu vi um filme."

Okay.

I’m talking about this movie for the first time, so I have to use “…a movie”.

OK.

Estou falando desse filme pela primeira vez, então tenho que usar “…um filme”.

But, if I want to talk about this movie again,

Mas, se eu quiser falar desse filme de novo,

for the second time, or the third time or fourth, fifth…

pela segunda vez, ou pela terceira vez ou pela quarta, quinta…

it doesn’t matter.

não importa.

I have to use ‘the’.

Eu tenho que usar 'o'.

“The movie was fun.”

“O filme foi divertido.”

I’m talking about this one. The specific.

Estou falando sobre este. O específico.

“The movie was fun.”

“O filme foi divertido.”

I can’t say, “A movie was fun.”

Não posso dizer: “Um filme foi divertido”.

That means all movies are fun.

Isso significa que todos os filmes são divertidos.

That’s not true.

Isso não é verdade.

“The movie was fun.”

“O filme foi divertido.”

Okay, and I also use ‘the’

Ok, e eu também uso 'o'

when I’m talking about a noun where there’s only one and only.

quando estou falando sobre um substantivo onde existe apenas um.

Okay.

OK.

For example, there’s only one sun.

Por exemplo, existe apenas um sol.

Okay, when I look at the sky, there’s only one sun.

Ok, quando olho para o céu, só há um sol.

So, I say, “The sun.”

Então, eu digo: “O sol”.

“The sun is hot.”

"O sol é quente."

I cannot say, “A sun.”

Não posso dizer: “Um sol”.

That’s wrong.

Isto é errado.

When there’s one and only, we say, “The sun.”

Quando existe apenas um, dizemos: “O sol”.

Okay.

OK.

Let’s look at some more examples.

Vejamos mais alguns exemplos.

The first example says, “A lion is dangerous.”

O primeiro exemplo diz: “Um leão é perigoso”.

I have to use ‘a’ because I’m talking about any one lion.

Tenho que usar 'a' porque estou falando de qualquer leão.

Any lion is dangerous.

Qualquer leão é perigoso.

All lions are dangerous.

Todos os leões são perigosos.

So, I use ‘a’.

Então, eu uso 'a'.

The next sentence says, “It’s a dog.”

A próxima frase diz: “É um cachorro”.

I’m talking about this dog for the first time, so I use ‘a’.

Estou falando sobre esse cachorro pela primeira vez, então uso 'a'.

Now, I’m talking about this dog for the second time.

Agora estou falando sobre esse cachorro pela segunda vez.

So, I say, “The dog is cute.”

Então, eu digo: “O cachorro é fofo”.

Okay.

OK.

Here’s a similar example.

“It’s an ant.”

“É uma formiga.”

Well, I used ‘an’ because we have ‘ant’, which start with a vowel.

Bem, usei 'an' porque temos 'ant', que começa com vogal.

And I’m talking about this ant for the first time.

E estou falando sobre essa formiga pela primeira vez.

“It’s an ant.”

“É uma formiga.”

Now, I’m talking about this ant again.

Agora estou falando sobre essa formiga novamente.

“The ant is small.”

“A formiga é pequena.”

“The ant…”, this one, “…is small.”

“A formiga…”, esta aqui, “…é pequena.”

Okay, and the last one.

Ok, e o último.

“It’s the moon.”

“É a lua.”

I have to say, “the moon” because there’s only one moon.

Eu tenho que dizer “a lua” porque só existe uma lua.

I cannot say, “a moon”.

Não posso dizer “uma lua”.

“It’s the moon.

“É a lua.

The moon…”, only one, “…is round.”

A lua…”, apenas uma, “…é redonda.”

Okay.

OK.

Let’s look at some more examples.

but this time I want you to think about whether we should put ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’.

So, we have to put ‘a’.

The next one.

“I see ____ octopus.”

Okay, this is the same.

It’s the first time I’m talking about this octopus.

É a primeira vez que falo deste polvo.

So, do I put ‘a’ or ‘an’?

Então, coloco 'a' ou 'an'?

Well here we have the vowel ‘o’.

Bem, aqui temos a vogal 'o'.

So we have to put “‘an’ octopus”.

Então temos que colocar “'um' polvo”.

“I see an octopus.”

“Eu vejo um polvo.”

Okay, the next one.

Ok, o próximo.

“It’s ___ pen.”

“É ___ caneta.”

Okay, it’s the same.

Ok, é a mesma coisa.

It’s the first time, so I say, “a pen”.

É a primeira vez, então eu digo “uma caneta”.

Now, I’m talking about the pen for the second time.

Agora estou falando da caneta pela segunda vez.

So I say, “The pen is red.”

Então eu digo: “A caneta é vermelha”.

Okay, I’m talking about this one.

So I say, “the”.

Okay, similarly…

“She is ____ girl.”

What do I say?

“a girl.”

“uma garota.”

We’re talking about her for the first time.

Estamos falando dela pela primeira vez.

Okay.

OK.

And now we’re talking about this girl again, for the second time.

E agora estamos falando dessa garota novamente, pela segunda vez.

So, I have to say, “The girl is pretty.”

Então, eu tenho que dizer: “A garota é bonita”.

And the last example.

E o último exemplo.

“I can see ___ sky.”

“Eu posso ver ___ céu.”

Now, we only have one sky.

Agora, só temos um céu.

Right…

So, if there’s only one and only, we have to put the article ‘the’.

Certo…

Então, se só existe um, temos que colocar o artigo 'o'.

“I can see the sky.”

“Eu posso ver o céu.”

Okay.
