In today's video, I'm going to tell you about nouns.

Because in English, nouns are very important.

They are the basic element of a sentence.

So if you want to speak English, you need to know about the different kinds

And I'm going to try and teach you as well as I can.

Ok, so let's start with concrete nouns.

Now in English, concrete nouns are people places or things,

including animals.

That you can see, that you can smell, or taste, or hear, or touch.

So you can basically use your five senses.

Let me give you a few examples.

If we talk about people, you could say, a man

You could name a city like London.

And if you talk about things, you could say a shoe,

or food like a pizza.

These are concrete nouns....ok.

Now let's move on to abstract nouns.

So abstract nouns, unlike concrete nouns, are ideas, concepts, emotions.

And you can't see an idea.

You can't smell a concept.

Or hear it.

So they are nouns.

They are things that exist, but you cannot see them, or taste them.

You can't use your five sense.

To give you a few examples, we could talk about love,

or time, or religion,

rules.

These are all words that represent ideas, concepts...

Now, let's get into more detail about nouns.

Let's now see the difference between common nouns

and proper nouns which are very important in English.

So common nouns and proper nouns refer to people, places, things, ideas.

Let's see a few examples.

We could talk about people for example.

A woman.

That's a common noun.

But if we talk about a specific woman, for example, me, Fanny.

That becomes a proper noun with a capital 'F'.

because, and you should know this, proper nouns are always capitalized.

You could talk about places.

A city.

That's a common noun.

Let's take a great city, London, of course.

Remember proper nouns - always capitalized.

We can talk about things for example.

Let's take a dog.

But if we take a specific dog, like Snoopy - capital 'S',

If we talk about things again, but for example, a car,

But if we name the brand, the specific brand of the car like Volvo,

And it takes a capital 'V'.

And finally, and we can say, a team - common noun.

But if we name a specific team, for example, the best football team, Manchester United,

then that's a proper noun and it's capitalized.

Now mind you, 'team', is a special word because it's called

So now that we know a lot about nouns in English, Let's practice finding nouns in a sentence.

Okay, first, In my class at Oxford University, I have many

If we take the first sentence, In my class at Oxford University, I have many

We have, class, and friends.

These are common nouns.

We know it's a proper noun because it's capitalized.

Now in this sentence, the noun is, friend - common noun.

As you can see it's capitalized.

Remember the abstract noun we talked about a few minutes ago.

What nouns can we find?

We can see, 'Jen', again - proper noun.

When you speak English, it’s very important to know the difference between a singular

Remember, the plural form of ‘woman’ is ‘women’.

Let’s work on pronunciation.

And I want you to tell me if we are using compound nouns or not.

Let’s take a look.

I want to drink some cold water.

Is ‘cold water’ a compound noun?

هل "الماء البارد" اسم مركب؟

What do you think?

ماذا تعتقد؟

It isn’t.

ليس كذلك.

‘Cold’ is a simply adjective describing the water.

"البرد" هي مجرد صفة تصف الماء.

She has a new boy friend.

لديها صديق صبي جديد.

Is boy friend a compound noun?

هل صديق الصبي اسم مركب؟

Well, it isn’t in this case.

حسنا، ليس في هذه الحالة.

He’s your friend and he’s a boy.

إنه صديقك وهو صبي.

But the compound noun, ‘boyfriend’, in one word, exists and has a different meaning.

لكن الاسم المركب "صديق" في كلمة واحدة موجود وله معنى مختلف.

Then, your boyfriend is more than a friend.

إذن، صديقك أكثر من مجرد صديق.

He’s the boy you’re having a relationship with.

Other example.

The blue bird was singing in the tree.

Is ‘blue bird’ a compound noun?

Not in this case.

It’s a simple bird and it’s blue.

But, the compound noun, ‘bluebird’, in one word, exists.

لكن الاسم المركب "بلوبيرد" في كلمة واحدة موجود.

It’s a specific bird.

إنه طائر محدد.

Let’s meet at the bus stop.

Is ‘bus stop’ a compound noun?

What do you think?

It is.

Well, it is a compound noun, but there is a big mistake.

In this video, I’m going to tell you about countable and uncountable nouns.

في هذا الفيديو سأخبركم عن الأسماء المعدودة وغير المعدودة.

It’s very important to know the difference between countable and uncountable nouns in

من المهم جدًا معرفة الفرق بين الأسماء المعدودة وغير المعدودة في

English.

اللغة الإنجليزية.

And students often get confused.

وغالبًا ما يرتبك الطلاب.

So please listen to me very carefully.

لذا يرجى الاستماع لي بعناية فائقة.

Let’s get started.

هيا بنا نبدأ.

Countable nouns are nouns that you can count.

الأسماء المعدودة هي الأسماء التي يمكنك عدها.

Uncountable nouns are nouns that you can’t count.

الأسماء غير المعدودة هي الأسماء التي لا يمكنك عدها.

They’re usually a type or a group.

هم عادة نوع أو مجموعة.

And they’re always singular.

وهم دائما مفردون.

Let’s look at a few examples.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على بعض الأمثلة.

Countable nouns – you can say, “a dog.”

الأسماء المعدودة - يمكنك أن تقول "كلب".

You can say, “one dog,” “two dogs,” “three dogs,” and so on.

يمكنك أن تقول "كلب واحد"، "كلابين"، "ثلاثة كلاب"، وما إلى ذلك.

“Man.”

"رجل."

You can say, “a man.”

يمكنك أن تقول: "رجل".

“Two men.”

"رجلان."

“Idea.”

"فكرة."

You can say, “one idea,” “two ideas,” and so on.

“Computer.”

"حاسوب."

Again, you can say, “one computer, two computers.”

مرة أخرى، يمكنك أن تقول، "جهاز كمبيوتر واحد، جهازي كمبيوتر."

And, “house.”

و"البيت".

Well, you can say, “one house, two houses, three houses,” and so on.

حسنًا، يمكنك أن تقول: "منزل واحد، منزلان، ثلاثة منازل"، وهكذا.

These are countable nouns.

هذه هي الأسماء المعدودة.

You can count them.

يمكنك عدهم.

But if we look at uncountable nouns.

ولكن إذا نظرنا إلى الأسماء غير المعدودة.

When you say, “water.”

عندما تقول "الماء".

You can’t say, “One water, two waters.”

لا يمكنك أن تقول: "ماء واحد، ماءان".

It doesn’t make any sense.

هذا ليس له أي معنى.

You cannot count water.

لا يمكنك حساب الماء.

Same goes for air.

الشيء نفسه ينطبق على الهواء.

You can’t say, “one air, two airs.”

لا يمكنك أن تقول: "هواء واحد، وهوان".

It’s just ‘air’.

It’s uncountable.

‘traffic’ ‘English’

'traffic' 'English'

‘Equipment’ These are all uncountable nouns.

'Equipment' هذه كلها أسماء غير معدودة.

You cannot count them And they’re always singular.

لا يمكنك عدهم وهم دائما مفردون.

Okay, guys.

Now, let’s take a closer look at rules with countable nouns and uncountable nouns.

الآن، دعونا نلقي نظرة فاحصة على القواعد مع الأسماء المعدودة والأسماء غير المعدودة.

So how do we know if a word is countable or uncountable?

فكيف نعرف إذا كانت الكلمة قابلة للعد أو غير قابلة للعد؟

Well there are a few tricks that can help.

Let’s look at these words.

دعونا ننظر إلى هذه الكلمات.

Some groups of words are very often uncountable.

And this can help you.

For example, liquids.

Water, juice, milk, beer.

All those words are uncountable.

Powders.

Sugar, flour, salt, rice.

Uncountable words as well.

Like fruit, meat, cheese, and bread.

And finally, abstract ideas.

وأخيرا، الأفكار المجردة.

Like time, information, love, and beauty.

مثل الوقت والمعلومات والحب والجمال.

Another trick is that most of the time, you can measure uncountable nouns.

الحيلة الأخرى هي أنه في معظم الأحيان، يمكنك قياس الأسماء غير المعدودة.

Let’s look at examples.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على الأمثلة.

For example, if we take liquids.

على سبيل المثال، إذا تناولنا السوائل.

I have two liters of milk.

عندي لترين من الحليب.

Now, you cannot count milk.

الآن، لا يمكنك حساب الحليب.

But you can measure milk.

ولكن يمكنك قياس الحليب.

And you can count liters.

So you can say, “I have two liters of milk.”

You can say, “I have a glass of water.”

Or “I have glasses of water.”

“Cups of coffee.”

So you can measure this uncountable noun.

حتى تتمكن من قياس هذا الاسم غير المعدود.

Same goes with powders.

الشيء نفسه ينطبق على المساحيق.

“I have one kilogram of sugar.”

"لدي كيلوغرام واحد من السكر."

“Two kilograms of sugar.”

"كيلوجرامين من السكر."

With materials and foods, we often use the word, ‘piece’.

بالنسبة للمواد والأطعمة، كثيرًا ما نستخدم كلمة "قطعة".

For example, “I ate two pieces of cake.”

على سبيل المثال، "أكلت قطعتين من الكعكة".

Or bread.

أو الخبز.

Or pizza.

أو البيتزا.

Or meat.

Or cheese.

“I need pieces of paper.”

"أحتاج إلى قطع من الورق."

Wood.

Plastic.

Metal.

Or “I have some water.”

‘Some’ is an article that always works with uncountable nouns.

"Some" هو مقال يعمل دائمًا مع الأسماء غير المعدودة.

Let’s move on.

Some words can be both countable and uncountable nouns.

بعض الكلمات يمكن أن تكون أسماء معدودة وغير معدودة.

Now not all of them.

الآن ليس كل منهم.

But some of them.

لكن البعض منهم.

Let’s take a look.

لنلقي نظرة.

“I would like to eat some cake.”

"أريد أن آكل بعض الكعك."

“I would like two pieces of cake.”

"أريد قطعتين من الكعكة."

So in these two sentences, ‘cake’ is obviously and uncountable noun.

إذن في هاتين الجملتين، كلمة "كعكة" هي اسم واضح وغير معدود.

But if I say, “I would like to eat two cakes.”

لكن إذا قلت: "أريد أن آكل كعكتين".

Suddenly, it becomes a countable noun.

فجأة، يصبح اسما معدودا.

Why?

لماذا؟

Because in the first two sentences, we are talking about pieces of one cake.

لأننا في الجملتين الأوليين نتحدث عن قطع من كعكة واحدة.

In the last sentence, we are considering the whole cake.

في الجملة الأخيرة، نحن نفكر في الكعكة بأكملها.

So it becomes countable.

لذلك يصبح قابلا للعد.

Another example.

مثال آخر.

“I would like to eat some chicken.”

"أريد أن آكل بعض الدجاج."

“I would like to eat a piece of chicken.”

"أريد أن آكل قطعة من الدجاج."

Both sentences, uncountable noun, ‘chicken’.

كلتا الجملتين، اسم غير معدود، "الدجاج".

But the last sentence, “I see two chickens.”

لكن الجملة الأخيرة "أرى دجاجتين".

Hmm, ‘chicken’, in this case, is a countable noun.

حسنًا، "الدجاج"، في هذه الحالة، هو اسم معدود.

Why?

لماذا؟

Because in the first two sentences, ‘chicken’ is food.

لأنه في الجملتين الأوليين كلمة "دجاج" هي طعام.

But in the last sentence, ‘chicken’ is an animal.

لكن في الجملة الأخيرة، "الدجاج" حيوان.

So the animal is a countable noun.

إذن فالحيوان اسم معدود.

‘Chicken’ as food is uncountable.

"الدجاج" كغذاء لا يحصى.

Let’s move on to example sentences now.

Let’s now review a few example sentences, so you can practice using countable and uncountable

Second example.

“I ate two pieces of cake.”

"لقد أكلت قطعتين من الكعك."

Please repeat after me.

"لقد أكلت قطعتين من الكعك."

“I ate two pieces of cake.”

"لقد أكلت قطعتين من الكعك."

Next sentence.

الجملة التالية.

“I saw some trash on all the streets.”

"رأيت بعض القمامة في كل الشوارع."

Please repeat after me.

“I saw some trash on all the streets.”

"رأيت بعض القمامة في كل الشوارع."

“I saw some trash on all the streets.”

Very good.
