- What is an interjection?

- Well, an interjection is a word or phrase

that a speaker can use to show feeling

or emotion, so it's normally.

- Ah, right.

- Yeah, it's normally used in spoken English,

it can be used in written English as well,

like in stories if the author wants to show

We use that a lot in British English, don't we?

- We use it a lot, we really do.

And the thing is, if you want to improve your conversation,

you really need to know how to use interjections

你就絕對要知道怎麼用感歎詞，

and also understand them.

還要理解感嘆詞的意思。

- Absolutely, absolutely.

- Yeah, 'cause they're different in different languages.

因為在不同語言中他們的意思也會有差。

So, today I've picked out my top ten interjections

所以呢，今天我挑了10個感歎詞來介紹，

that native English speakers use

and I want to help you understand them

Okay, so the first interjection

好的，我們要講的第一個感歎詞是——

that we're going to talk about is hmmm.

「Hmmm⋯⋯」

- Hmmm. - Hmmm.

-「Hmmm⋯⋯」 -「Hmmm⋯⋯」

Now, what does hmmm, when would you use hmmm?

那「hmmm⋯⋯」是啥？什麼時候用？

- Hmmm, perhaps when you are going to think about something.

hmmm⋯⋯應該是在想事情的時候吧。

- Yes, you would use hmmm to show

對，「hmmm⋯⋯」會出現在你正在想事情的時候。

that you are thinking about something.

對，「hmmm⋯⋯」會出現在你正在想事情的時候。

So, it could be great if you get asked a question

所以，如果有人問你問題，

and you want to buy a bit of extra time

And it's something that I mentioned in my previous video

- Like that but we tend to say hmmm,

And this is simply because having your mouth open

in front of someone else is considered impolite in English.

Yeah, especially for students who are doing

like the IELTS and the Cambridge speaking exams.

- To get that, yeah, like Lucy said,

buying that extra time to think,

say a British sound, not ehhh, ehhh, ehhh,

say hmmm, that's an interesting question, hmmm.

- Hmmm, yeah, yeah and you just sound more native overall

對der，這樣從頭到腳都聽起來更像母語人士了。

by not saying ehhh and you say hmmm.

因為你不是說「ehhh,⋯⋯」，而是說「hmmm,⋯⋯」。

- Yeah. - It's very, very polite.

- It's very polite, yeah, yeah.

真的很有禮儀。

- Okay, the next one is jeez.

接下來是——

「Jeez」

- [Both] Jeez.

-「Jeez」 -「Jeez」

- Okay. - Okay.

And jeez, I mean, where do you think

我說，你覺得「jeez」是從哪來的？

the word jeez comes from?

我說，你覺得「jeez」是從哪來的？

- Hmmm, probably our friend Jesus.

嗯⋯⋯是從大家的好麻吉「Jesus」吧。

- It comes from the word Jesus

「jeez」是從「Jesus」來的，

and it normally is used to expression shock

通常在受驚時，

or exasperation.

或是被激怒時會用。

- Yeah., agreed.

-同意。

- So, I can say it in two different ways.

可以用兩種方式表達，

If I was to say, jeez, what would I be showing?

要是我說「jeez」，我想表達的是什麼？

- Probably annoyance.

可能很煩吧。

Probably that someone did something

或許有人做了你不喜歡的事。

you didn't like.

- Yeah.

- The third interjection that we have chosen for you

我們為你選的第三個感歎詞是

is phew.

「Phew」

- Phew.

「Phew」

Can often be teamed with the hand on the forehead.

一般會搭配手背擦拭額頭的手勢。

- Yeah. - Phew.

-「Phew」

- Phew.

-「Phew」

- We would use the phew interjection to show relief

我們會用「呼」來表達放鬆，

that you are relieved about something.

當你對某事感到鬆一口氣的時候。

So, maybe I'm running for the bus

好比我正在狂奔好趕上公車，

然後我看到公車還沒來或誤點了，

and then I see that it hasn't arrived

or maybe it's delayed, I would say, "Ah, phew."

就會說「噢，Phew！」

Thank God.

- Yeah, you know, yeah, so you're very relieved about it.

對對對，鬆一口氣的時候會說嘛，

I said it today actually.

我今天就說了，

- Did you? - Yeah, yeah.

-是喔？ -嗯嗯。

- What happened?

怎麼了？

- So, Lucy and I had real problems with the trains today

就是今天我跟露西都差點搭不上火車，

and I thought I was going to miss it

我還以為會錯過那班，

and I was going to be late for the lovely Lucy

這樣的話我趕不上跟露西的約。

順利趕上火車以後，我就說了——

and then I manged to catch the train

and I said.

- Phew. - Phew, phew.

-「Phew」 -「Phew! Phew! Phew!」

- But the funny thing was I was on a similar train

很好笑的是，我也差點趕不上火車，

and I was also delayed.

所以我也耽擱了。

其實我們都延誤了，

So, actually we were both delayed,

so there was no issue anyway.

所以總而言之沒人遲到。

- No, no.

- It was fine.

沒事啦。

So, interjection number four

好的，來到第四個感歎詞是——

is oops.

「Oops」

Oops.

「Oops」

- Oops.

-「Oops」

- This one, I think, is quite international.

我想這個滿國際化的，

- Yeah.

- Spanish people tend to spell it ups, like.

西班牙人的拼法是「ups」，像這樣，

- [Both] Ups.

-「Ups」

- Oops. - Oops.

-「Oops」 -「Oops」

- And when would we use oops?

那我們什麼時候用「oops」呢？

做事笨手笨腳的時候，

- When you do something clumsy.

When you do something by accident,

不小心做了什麼事的時候，

something you didn't want to do.

做了你不想做的事。

- Something not too serious.

不是很嚴重的事。

- Yeah, like.

就是這樣。

- Oops. - Oops.

-「Oops」 -「Oops」

- We can sometimes say oops-a-daisy

有時候我們也會說「oops-a-daisy」。

and that's quite a common British, I would say,

這是滿常見的英式用法，

if not English,

probably quite a British English expression.

Oops-a-daisy.

- Yeah, I can't imagine

an American person going

- Oops-a-daisy, yeah.

Do you know what?

我跟你說，

We will probably find someone in the comments

有可能會有人在下面留言說，

that says no, I'm American and I use it all the time.

『才不呢，我是美國人但我每一刻都在說。』

So, yeah.

- So tell us

那留言告訴我們吧！

if you are American and you use that expression.

如果你是美國人而且你也會說這句。

Number five is ahem.

第五個是——

「Ahem」

- Ahem. - Ahem.

-「Ahem」 -「Ahem」

- Ahem.

「Ahem」

- What does that mean?

這又是啥意思？

- Well, it's to show that you're clearing your throat

這是你清了喉嚨，

ready to say something, okay?

準備講一件事。

Maybe you have to interrupt someone.

可能是你要打斷某人說話，

So, you say ahem,

所以你說「Ahem，我要說一下話」

I'm going to say something,

所以你說「Ahem，我要說件事，打斷你一下。」

let me interrupt you.

- Okay, so if I was talking your.

所以我如果要討論你的⋯⋯

- Ahem.

「Ahem!」

I want to talk now.

我現在要講話了。

(both laugh)

幹得好。

- Nicely done.

- People will often say ahem

要演講的時候也常用「Ahem」。

before they make a speech.

(Lucy dings)

- They'll ding on a glass

先敲幾下玻璃杯，

and then go ahem.

然後說「Ahem，

I'm going to make a speech.

我要說一些話了喔。」

Number six is mmm, mmm

第六個是——

「mmm」

and this has many meanings.

這裡有很多意思

We were just discussing that we use it a lot

我們討論過這個，

to show agreement, that we agree with someone.

我們常用來表達贊同某人。

- Mmm.

「Mmm.」

- So, yeah, I'll be talking

就是我在講話，

and Harry will be mmm, agreeing along with me.

哈利說『Mmm』來表示同意我的話。

- Mmm, it's because you're very agreeable, mmm.

Mmm，是因為你的話讓人欣然同意。 *agreeable另有討人喜歡的意思*

- Oh, thank you, Harry.

噢太感謝你了哈利，

We would also use it if we see something delicious,

美食當前的時候也會用「Mmm」。

好比這樣，

we might say.

- [Both] Mmm.

「Mmm」

- Yeah, with a different intonation, a bit longer.

語調會不同，稍微長一點。

- Mmm.

「Mmm」

Yeah, it's got a wave to it.

像是波浪一樣。

- Mmm. - Yeah.

- Would you say it if you saw someone

那你看到有人很吸引你的目光，

and you thought they were attractive?

- Mmm, yeah I would.

你會說嗎？

Mmm，當然會！

(Lucy and Harry laugh)

這有很多意思，

There are lots of different ways.

I think it depends really

意思是由我們的肢體語言來決定的。

on the body language with that one.

- Yeah, absolutely, agreed.

沒錯，同意。

- But if you want to show that you're agreeing with someone,

如果你想表達你很認同，但不想打斷對方

without interrupting them and saying yes, yes,

也不想一直說「yes, yes, right,」

right, all the time,

then just going mmm, mmm,

那試試看用「Mmm」，

can show that you agree.

一樣可以表達贊同。

- Yeah, you could use that in a meeting,

對，可以在會議的時候用，像是工作會議

in like a business meeting, mmm.

「Mmm」

- So, for the next one,

下一個，

how would you show that you disagree?

你怎麼表達不同意？

- Mmm. - Mmm/mm-mm.

Mmm/mm-mm

- Ah, mmm/mm-mm. - So.

Mmm/mm-mm

- Ah, I would go mmm.

啊！我會說「mmm」。

如果我的學生說錯了，

With my students, if they're saying something wrong.

- Mhm.

- Or if they.

或是他們⋯⋯

(Harry laughs)

Or if I think, yeah, they've made a grammar mistake

或是他們文法有錯，

and I want them to realise,

我希望他們注意到錯誤，

I say mmm.

我就會「mmm」。

- Mmm, okay, so we're showing a doubt,

所以這是表達不確定，

we're showing that we don't agree with someone

或表達不同意某人

if we go mmm, in like a sort of questioning tone.

說「mmm」的時候會是一種懷疑的語氣，

- Yes, or the one you said.

或是你剛剛說的另一種。

- The one I said which is mmm/mm-mm.

我剛剛說的是「mmm/mm-mm」。

- The next interjection today is yikes.

下一個要介紹的是「yikes」。

- Yikes. - Yikes.

-「yikes」 -「yikes」

- Yeah.

什麼時候用呢？

- When would we say that?

- We would say yikes to show negative shock

表達對某事的負面驚訝時會用。

at something, normally negative.

通常是負面的。

- Ah, okay.

- So, when I saw Charlie's broken bone,

當我看到查理摔斷骨頭的時候⋯⋯

yikes, that looks painful, yeah.

Yikes！感覺很痛誒！

Yeah, so yikes.

「yikes」

- That is a good example to say yikes.

你舉的情境很符合說「yikes」

Yeah, yeah, something you think,

你覺得某個東西有點噁心，也可以說「yikes」

that's a bit disgusting, yikes.

- Yikes, yikes.

Now, the next one that we're going to talk about

接下來要介紹的非常非常非常英式用法，

is really, really British

and it's something I say all the time,

是我每天都在說的詞，

so much so that I actually have to cut it out

說的太多了，讓我剪片的時候還得剪掉很多。

of my videos quite a lot.

And it is so.

那就是——「so」

So, so is a word that I use

「so」是我用來開啟話題的⋯⋯

to introduce speech.

先行詞。

So, I know I'm going to say something,

我心裡知道接下來要說些話了，

so I'll say so, next we're going to talk about,

我就會說：「so，下一個我們要說的⋯⋯」

and actually it's not best practise to say so that much

說實話，太常說「so」不是很棒的示範，

but it could be really useful for you

但「so」真的很好用，

if you're doing a speaking exam

在口說考試的時候，

'cause it does again, buy you a little bit of extra time.

像前面的例子一樣，可以幫你爭取到一點時間。

- Yes, yes.

沒錯。

- So, what do you think?

那你覺得怎麼樣？

- So, I think it's really good.

很棒。

So, yeah, it's.

“so, yeah“ 真的。

Ah, I did it, so yeah.

噢！我做到了，“so yeah”！

It's a way of leading from one idea

這是拋磚引玉的一種方法，

or one step in a conversation to the next

或是可以承先啟後，進入下個話題，

or to create intervals between your diction

又或是說話時增加一些間隔，

or the words that you say.

- Exactly, so, I think it's a really good one to use.

說的沒錯，這一個真的很好用。

- Yeah, the next one today is gosh.

下一個是「gosh」。

- Gosh. - Gosh.

-「gosh」 -「gosh」

Oh gosh.

歐，gosh

And when would we say this one?

什麼時候用這個呢？

- Well, we would often say oh my God

我們很常說「oh my God」對吧，

but sometimes it's good not to mention God

但有時候不要提到神比較好，

and instead we substitute it with gosh,

所以就用「gosh」來代替。

oh my gosh,

「Oh my gosh」

which can then be cut down to just gosh

可以簡化成只有「gosh」

or my gosh or oh gosh.

或是「my gosh」跟「oh gosh」

- Yeah and I guess traditionally,

我猜是因為我們習慣小心點，別褻瀆了神祇，

people were very careful not to be blasphemous, right?

對不對？

- Exactly, not to use God's name in vain.

沒有錯，不能隨便用神的名字。

- Yeah, exactly, yeah,

so people would say oh my gosh.

所以大家都說「oh my gosh」。

- Oh my gosh.

「oh my gosh]

- Because if they said oh my God,

如果說了「oh my God」，

their grandmother would say.

奶奶聽到了就會說，

- Don't blaspheme, yeah.

-「不准褻瀆神明！」

- Yeah, don't speak bad about the God,

所以不要說神的壞話，

it's not his problem.

這些跟祂無關。

- Yeah, so oh my God isn't really frowned upon

現在英國人對「oh my God」沒那麼不贊同了，

nowadays in Britain, it might be in America though.

但在美國或許還是如此，

They're a little more religious over there.

在這點上他們比較虔誠一點。

- Yeah.

that one word is a very nice word, like beach,

the other word is not so nice

and could offend someone.
