In this lesson, I've got three listening activities

for you to do, so please have a pen and paper ready.

Let's start with exercise number one.

This exercise is all about

showing you the importance of vocabulary.

Many listening exams will have a gap-fill exercise,

هواي امتحانات استماع يكون بيهة تمارين تملي الفراغات

where you're given a passage of text

ينطوك قطعة نص

and you have to listen to an audio and fill in the gaps.

The same goes for natural fast English conversation.

ونفس الشغلة بالنسبة للمحادثات الانگليزية السريعة

You may understand the majority of the words,

but you may miss some keywords

that are essential to understanding the conversation.

How can you understand a passage of text

or a fast English conversation

if you don't know the vocabulary?

Yes, sometimes you can understand the context

and many exams will rely on this for the easier questions.

But to get full marks,

you need to have a broad and expansive vocabulary.

if you practise it frequently.

If you commit to doing this exercise every day

I'm going to give you a short audio.

I'm going to play it at a slightly slower speed than normal.

I want you to write down everything you hear.

It might be a full sentence, it might just be words.

يمكن جمل كاملة او بس كلمات

I'm then going to play again at normal speed,

and I'm going to play it one more time at fast speed.

During each of the three times that I play the audio,

I want you to be writing down what you hear

Again, remember to turn off subtitles

because it really affects the brain in a funny way.

When you turn something down to slow speed,

it gives you more time to think about what you're hearing.

راح ينطيكم وكت اكثر حتة تفكرون شجاي تسمعون

When you turn it back to normal speed,

ولمن تخلون السرعة عل الطبيعي

it sounds really, really fast,

but again it gives you another chance.

بس همين راح ينطيك فرصة ثانية

When you put it onto fast speed,

it sounds almost impossible to understand.

راح تحسون انه تقريبا مستحيل تفهموه

But because you've already heard it twice

بس لأنكم سمعتوه مرتين قبل

and at slower speeds,

بسرعة ابطأ

you can still pick things up

راح تضلون تكدرون تفهمون شغلات

and then when you play it the final time

ولمن تشغلوه بالمرة الاخيرة

to check your answer at normal speed,

حتة تتأكدون من حلكم بالسرعة الطبيعية

well, it seems much easier.

Now, I would like you to find YouTube videos

in accent that you desire,

maybe it's a TED Talk, maybe it's your favourite YouTuber,

maybe it's some of my videos,

I want you to listen to them once in slow speed,

اريدكم تسمعوهن مرة بالبطيء

once at normal speed, and once at fast speed.

ومرة بالطبيعي و مرة بالسريع

Then go back to normal speed

هدور ترجعون للطبيعي

and see how much more you understand.

If you want to do the writing down exercise,

I encourage you to take very short videos

اشجعكم انه تاخذون فيدوات زغيرة كلش

or snippets, maybe one minute of news videos

او مقاطع مدتهة دقيقة من فيدوات اخبار

or commentary videos.

If you do maybe five minutes a day,

اذا سويتوهة يمكن فد دقيقتين باليوم

if you do maybe two minutes a day,

you play it slow, normal, fast, then normal again,

if you do that every day for 30 days,

I guarantee, you will start becoming

much more used to listening to fast English conversations.

It's a really great technique,

بس تحتاج شوية لاصرار

but it does need a little bit of dedication.

Exercise number three is connected speech.

راح احچي هاي الجملة چم مرة

I'm going to say this sentence quite a few times.

يمكن راح اگولهة اربع مرات

I think I'm going to say it four times.

اني اقترح انكم باول مرة

I recommend that on the first time

تكتبون بيهة الي تسمعوه

that you just write down what you hear,

اذا چانت حروف

if it's letters, phonemes.

يمكن انتة تسمع بس كومة حروف

او كلمات عشوائية

Maybe it's just a load of letters that you hear

و بالمرتين الجايات الي تسمعه بيهن

or random words.

Then over the next couple of times that you hear it.

حاول تخليهن بجملة كاملة

Try and make it out into a full sentence.

الي انت جاي تسويه هوة تدريب لدماغك

حتة يتعود عل كلام المتصل

What you're doing is training your brain

to adapt to connected speech.

Tuh, with the schwa, visit-it.

Right, let's talk about why.

While we don't seek like robots, we use connected speech.

I'm going to give a brief overview now,

شغلة كلش زينة تتمرنون عليهة

but the technique I've just shown you

لانه يخليكم تفكرون بالكلام المتصل

is a really good thing to practise,

because it gets you thinking about connected speech.

اذا چان عدكم مدرس انگليزي

تگدرون تطلبون منه يرسللكم چم جملة

If you have an English teacher,

وانتو تحاولون تعرفون شجاي تكول هل الجمل

you could ask them to send you some sentences

شغلة تكدرون تطلبوهة باي صف خاص

and have you work out what they're saying.

It's something you could request in a private class.

اكو اربع اجزاء للكلام المتصل

الي راح احجيلكم عنه

There are four parts of connected speech

الاول هو"التوصيل"

that I'm going to talk about.

هوة يمن كلمة تنتهي بصوت صحيح

The first one is catenation.

This is when a consonant sound at the end of one word,

ركزو اني گلت صوت مو حرف

and note I say sound, it's not just a letter.

لان الموضوع كله عن الصوتيات

فالصوت الصحيح في نهاية الكلمة الاولة

It's all about the phonemes.

A consonant sound at the end of one word

ينربط بصوت العلة

في بداية الكلمة الثانية

is joined with the vowel sound

at the beginning of the following word.

في جملة المثال, been intending

An apple,

an apple.

In the example sentence, been intending,

be-nintending catenation هذة هوة ال

been intending, that's catenation.

واكو همين "التدخل"

الي هوة لمن كلمتين وحدة بصف الثانية

There's also intrusion.

يجي صوت اضافي لازم ينحط بينهن

This is when two words are sent together.

حتة يخليهة سهلة تنلفظ

An extra sound might be placed between them

to make it easier to say.

I am, I am.

you are, you-a-are

شرحت عنهة اكثر بفيديو الكلام المتصل

You are, you are.

الي خليت رابطه جوة

I explained this more in my connected speech video,

بس اذا حلگنة متوسع, مثل ee

which I have linked down below.

But if our mouth is wide, like ee,

فغالبا راح نسوي صوت yah

then we normally do a yah sound.

واذا حلگنة مدور, مثل ooh

And if our mouth is round, like ooh,

فغالبا راح نسوي صوت wuh

then we normally do wuh sound.

على سبيل المثال ، الجملة

Ee, yah.

Ooh, wuh.

we all play out

For example, the sentence,

weyall playout

we all play out.

play همين بيهة صوت عريض, yout

We all play out.

Play, again, it's this wide sound, yout.

weyall playout

Now take this sentence,

gowout towopen

go out to open.

هذة هوة الـ ooh, شكل دائري

Go out to open.

لهل السبب استعملنة صوت wuh

It's the ooh, round shape,

وهمين عدنة صوت الـ er

so we use a wuh sound.

there is,theris

We also have the er sound.

For example, there is, there is.

better alone, betteralone

Better alone, better alone.

بالانگليزية البريطانية

منلفظ صوت الـr بنهاية الكلمات

Now in British English,

we don't tend to pronounce the Rs at the end of words,

لكن هذي الـ r السرية بعدهي موجودة

but those secret Rs are still there,

لذلك يطلعن لمن الكلمة الثانية

so they come out when the following word

تبدي بصوت علية

وهمين للي يريد تفاصيل اكثر يلكاهن بفيديو الكلام المتصل

begins with a vowel sound.

بجملة المثال

the absolute تصير theyabsolute بيهة صوت yah

In the example sentence,

the absolute became the absolute with the yah sound.

وهمين عدنة بعد "الادغام"

الي هوة اخفاء صوت لو اكثر

We also have a lesion,

which is the omission of one or more sounds.

ممكن يكون صوت علة او صوت صحيح

It can be a vowel sound, a consonant sound,

او مقطع كامل

و الشكل الشائع منهة والي نشوفه بشكل واضح هو الاختصار

a whole syllable.

A common form that is clear to see is contractions.

Do not becomes don't.

Is not becomes isn't.

بجملة المثال ,I had became صارت I'd

In the example sentence, I had became I'd.

وبالاخير عدنة "التجميع"

Lastly, we have assimilation.

الي هوة لمن صوتين يجن سوة

This is where two phonemes comes together

ويتغيرن لصوت جديد يكون اسهل

and change into a new phoneme which is easier to say.

For example, don't you becomes dontchu.

لأن tuh و yah اجن سوة

That's because tuh and yah comes together

وسون صوت ch

Don't you like it, dontcha like it

to make a ch sound.

Don't you like it, dontcha like it.

duh و yah يجن سوية يسون صوت ja

Duh and yah come together to make a ja sound.

على سبيل المثال Did you like it

For example, did you like it?

Dijyou like it

يلة

Did you like it?
