I’m Anna and I’m here to teach you  all about the many uses of ‘pin’.

저는 Anna이고 '핀'의 다양한 용도에 대해 모든 것을 가르치기 위해 왔습니다.

Let’s get started with a simple  definition of the word ‘pin’.

'핀'이라는 단어의 간단한 정의부터 시작하겠습니다.

The word ‘pin’ is a verb and a noun.

'핀'이라는 단어는 동사이자 명사입니다.

The noun ‘pin’ means ‘a thin piece  of metal with a sharp point at one  

명사 '핀'은 옷을 고정하는 데 사용하는 핀과 같이 ' 한 쪽

end and a little ball at the other’ -  like the pins you use to pin clothes. 

끝에는 날카로운 끝이 있고 다른 쪽 끝에는 작은 공이 있는 얇은 금속 조각'을 의미합니다 .

The verb ‘pin’ means ‘to hold something  or someone down so it or they can’t move’.

동사 '핀'은 '무언가 또는 사람을 고정시키거나 움직이지 못하게 하다'를 의미합니다.

“The police had me pinned to the ground.”

"경찰이 저를 땅바닥에 고정시켰습니다."

It can also mean to simply ‘attach with a pin’.

단순히 '핀으로 붙이다'라는 뜻도 됩니다.

“Yeah, pin the tail on the donkey.”

"그래, 당나귀에 꼬리를 달아라."

‘Pin the tail on the donkey’ is a  popular children’s game where you  

'당나귀 꼬리 꽂기'는 실제 당나귀가

put a tail on a donkey using a pin, not  a real donkey. A picture of a donkey.

아닌 핀을 이용해 당나귀에 꼬리를 달아주는 인기 어린이 게임입니다 . 당나귀 그림입니다.

‘Pin up’ has the same meaning as ‘pin  to the wall’, so you can also just say,

'Pin up'은 'pin to the wall'과 같은 의미이므로

“We pinned the poster up.” “We pinned up our new football scarf.”

"We pinned the poster up"이라고도 말할 수 있습니다. "우리는 새 축구 스카프를 고정했습니다."

‘A pin-up’ is a noun which  means ‘a glamorous person’.

'A pin-up'은 '글래머러스한 사람'을 의미하는 명사입니다.

Marylin Monroe was often referred to as ‘a

pin-up’ - a woman who might be on  a poster that you’d, well, pin up.

‘Pin down’, however, doesn’t mean ‘to take down’.

Unfortunately, it’s not as clear as that!

‘Pin down’ means ‘to hold something  in place’, sometimes with an object.

'핀 다운'은 '무언가를 제자리에 고정하다'를 의미하며 때로는 물체를 사용하기도 합니다.

“Ah, I had to pin the dog down  while he had his vaccinations.”

"아, 예방 접종을 하는 동안 개를 묶어 두어야 했어요."

Or as a phrasal verb, it means ‘to force  someone to make concrete plans or a decision’.

또는 구동사로 ' 누군가에게 구체적인 계획이나 결정을 내리도록 강요하다'를 의미합니다.

You can pin your brother down for a holiday drink,  

당신은 휴일 술을 마시기 위해 당신의 형제를 고정시킬 수 있습니다.

which means you make your brother  make a plan with you to get a drink…

즉, 당신은 당신의 형제가 당신과 함께 술을 마실 계획을 세우게 한다는 것을 의미합니다...

Or you can pin down a time and day to  discuss a contract with a colleague,  

또는 당신은 동료와 계약에 대해 논의할 시간과 요일을 고정할 수 있습니다.

so you organise a time for that task.

Now, the phrasal verb ‘pin (someone) down’  can be used in formal and informal situations.

이제 구동사 'pin (someone) down'은 공식 및 비공식 상황에서 사용할 수 있습니다.

Next, we’ll look at ‘pin on’  or ‘pin something on someone’.

다음으로 '고정' 또는 '누군가에 고정'을 살펴보겠습니다.

This means ‘to try and show  that someone did something

bad or unhelpful, possibly even a crime’.

The person may or not be guilty.

So, someone said and there is some evidence  that the ex-employee committed the robbery or

This means there will never be  proof that I committed that act.

Another use of ‘pin’ is ‘to  put a pin in something’.

This means ‘to stop discussing or working on

something and plan to look  at it again after a break’.

For example, you can say

“We’re not getting anywhere with this report.

Let’s put a pin in it and  come back to it after lunch.”

You can also use the verb ‘stick’, so the  expression would be ‘stick a pin in something’.

동사 'stick'을 사용할 수도 있으므로 표현은 'stick a pin in something'이 됩니다.

Like…

예를 들어...

“Can we stick in a pin in that idea  while we explore some other options?”

"다른 옵션을 탐색하는 동안 그 아이디어에 고정할 수 있나요 ?"

Meaning, it’s a good idea but it might not be the

best one so let’s think of some  more and then come back to it.

Next up, I wanna show you some physical objects that are all different kinds of pins.

This is a hair pin.

You use it to hold your hair in place.

You may hear this being called a  ‘thumbtack’ - that’s the American

‘To pin your hopes on someone or something’ means ‘to really, really want something and  

'To pin your hope on someone or something'은 '정말로, 정말로 무언가를 원하고

have ideas about how your future  will be, based on it happening’.

당신의 미래가 일어날 것을 기반으로 어떻게 될지에 대한 아이디어를 갖다 '를 의미합니다.

If you ‘pin your hopes on getting a promotion’, 

'승진에 희망을 걸다'는 것은 승진 이후의 삶에

it means you start to make plans for what  life will be like after your promotion.

대한 계획을 세우기 시작한다는 의미입니다 .

Telling someone not to pin their hopes on  something means the same as ‘don’t get your  

누군가에게 무언가에 희망을 걸지 말라고 말하는 것은 '기대하지 마세요'와 같은 의미입니다

hopes up’, as in, it may not happen  so be prepared for disappointment.

. 일이 일어나지 않을 수도 있으므로 실망에 대비하세요.

Oh, another use of ‘pin’ is ‘pinpoint’,  

아, '핀'의 또 다른 용법은 '핀포인트'입니다.

which means ‘to identify something  with a lot of precision’.

이는 '정확하게 무언가를 식별하다'를 의미합니다 .

For example, you can pinpoint exactly where  

예를 들어,

to turn when visiting a loved  one’s house for the first time.

In fact, it’s often used in the context of directions - like a pin on a map. There.

Another use of ‘pin’ relating to a map is to ‘drop (someone) a pin’.

That means ‘to send them your location  using an instant messaging app’.

Finally, your PIN number is  your unique identification

number used to protect your bank accounts.

Now, when you want to get some money, you will  need to know your PIN to operate a cash machine.
