Today I'm going to talk about three parts of daily speech that we all use

سأتحدث اليوم عن ثلاثة أجزاء من الكلام اليومي الذي نستخدمه جميعًا

when describing or showing the position or state of something.

عند وصف أو إظهار موضع أو حالة شيء ما.

Today I will tell you all  about this, that and the other.

اليوم سأخبركم بكل شيء عن هذا وذاك والآخر.

Although this subject might sound complicated and difficult to understand,

على الرغم من أن هذا الموضوع قد يبدو معقدًا وصعب الفهم، إلا

it is in fact quite easy to explain the definitions of this and that.

أنه في الواقع من السهل جدًا شرح تعريفات هذا وذاك.

First of all, the word this refers to something that has recently been mentioned.

بداية، كلمة "هذا" تشير إلى شيء تم ذكره مؤخرًا.

A familiar thing or a popular topic that will often be referred to as this.

شيء مألوف أو موضوع شائع يُشار إليه غالبًا بهذا الاسم.

It is a thing that most people are aware of or something that is easily recognizable.

إنه شيء يعرفه معظم الناس أو شيء يمكن التعرف عليه بسهولة.

Something that is nearby or close at hand is often referred to as this.

غالبًا ما يُشار إلى الشيء القريب أو القريب في متناول اليد بهذا الاسم.

It is the nearest thing or the most obvious object that can be seen.

إنه أقرب شيء أو أكثر الأشياء وضوحًا التي يمكن رؤيتها.

The nearest thing to you that is being pointed out

غالبًا ما يُشار إلى أقرب شيء إليك يتم

will often be referred to as this.

الإشارة إليه على أنه هذا.

Something that you are holding or have in your hand

عادة ما يُشار إلى

will normally be referred to as this.

الشيء الذي تحمله أو في يدك

For example, this pen, this watch, this hat.

بهذا الاسم. على سبيل المثال، هذا القلم، هذه الساعة، هذه القبعة.

These objects are nearby and can clearly be seen.

هذه الأشياء قريبة ويمكن رؤيتها بوضوح.

This can also be used to  identify a specific person 

يمكن استخدام هذا أيضًا لتحديد شخص

or thing that is being indicated or experienced.

أو شيء معين تتم الإشارة إليه أو تجربته.

You might refer to a person as this.

قد تشير إلى شخص بهذا الاسم.

"Don't listen to this person, he doesn't know what he's talking about."

"لا تستمع إلى هذا الشخص، فهو لا يعرف ما الذي يتحدث عنه".

"This town has really changed over the years."

"لقد تغيرت هذه المدينة حقًا على مر السنين."

Something recently mentioned might be referred to,

وقد يُشار إلى شيء ما تم ذكره مؤخراً،

especially if it is something that many people are talking about.

خاصة إذا كان أمراً يتحدث عنه كثير من الناس.

"This new law they are introducing will really change the way we live our lives."

"هذا القانون الجديد الذي يقدمونه سيغير حقًا الطريقة التي نعيش بها حياتنا."

The word this is a pronoun, which means it can be 

الكلمة this هي ضمير، مما يعني أنه يمكن

used as a way of identifying  something in a specific way.

استخدامها كوسيلة لتحديد شيء ما بطريقة معينة.

This is the definition of this.

هذا هو تعريف هذا.

Then we have the word that,

ثم لدينا كلمة "ذلك"،

which is a slightly more complex word.

وهي كلمة أكثر تعقيدًا بعض الشيء.

Despite its seeming simplicity,

على الرغم من بساطتها الظاهرة،

'that' is a very common word in both writing and speaking.

إلا أن كلمة "هذا" شائعة جدًا في الكتابة والتحدث.

We use it as a determinator, (determiner) a demonstrated pronoun, and a relative pronoun.

نستخدمها محدداً، و(محدداً) ضميراً مبيناً، وضميراً موصولاً.

We also use it as a conjunction to introduce 

نستخدمها أيضًا كأداة ربط لإدخال

clauses referring to that as  a determinator and pronoun.

عبارات تشير إلى ذلك كمحدد وضمير.

We often use that to point to a thing or person.

غالبًا ما نستخدم ذلك للإشارة إلى شيء أو شخص.

We use it with singular nouns.

نستخدمها مع الأسماء المفردة

The single person is often  distant from the speaker 

غالبًا ما يكون الشخص المنفرد بعيدًا عن المتحدث

and sometimes closer to the listener,

وأحيانًا أقرب إلى المستمع،

or not visible to either  the speaker or the listener.

أو لا يكون مرئيًا للمتحدث أو المستمع.

"What was that?" "Did you hear that noise?"

"ماذا كان هذا؟" "هل سمعت هذا الضجيج؟"

"Don't touch that bike. It belongs to me."

"لا تلمس تلك الدراجة. إنها ملك لي."

A thing being pointed out or referred to at a distance is often referred to as that.

غالبًا ما يُشار إلى الشيء الذي تتم الإشارة إليه أو الإشارة إليه على مسافة على أنه ذلك.

As a relative pronoun, we use that to introduce defining relative clauses.

كضمير نسبي، نستخدم ذلك لتقديم عبارات الوصل المحددة.

We can use that instead of who, whom or which to refer to people, animals, and things.

يمكننا استخدام ذلك بدلاً من من أو من أو أي للإشارة إلى الأشخاص والحيوانات والأشياء.

It is often seen as an informal way of pointing out a living creature or a person.

It is worth noting that we are more likely to use that when referring to an animal or an object.

ومن الجدير بالذكر أننا على الأرجح نستخدم ذلك عند الإشارة إلى حيوان أو شيء ما.

In many situations, it might  be seen as insulting or rude 

في العديد من المواقف، قد يكون من المهين أو الوقاحة

to describe a person as that.

وصف شخص ما بهذه الطريقة.

"Who is that at the door?" "That is my friend."

"من هذا الذي عند الباب؟" "هذا هو صديقي."

"I really don't want to be  seen in public with that."

"أنا حقًا لا أريد أن أرى ذلك علنًا."

If we are discussing two things that are at different distances from us,

إذا كنا نناقش شيئين يقعان على مسافة مختلفة منا،

we will often refer to the nearest thing as this and the object furthest away as that.

فغالبًا ما نشير إلى أقرب شيء باسم هذا وإلى أبعد شيء باسم ذلك.

For example, this tree and that field.

على سبيل المثال، هذه الشجرة وذلك الحقل.

The field is much further away, so I will refer to it as that.

المجال أبعد بكثير، لذا سأشير إليه بهذا الاسم.

Quite often the distance  and location of objects will 

في كثير من الأحيان، ستحدد المسافة وموقع الأشياء

decide whether we describe it as this or that.

ما إذا كنا نصفها بهذا أم بذاك.

The situation you are currently in will always be described as this,

سيتم دائمًا وصف الموقف الذي أنت فيه حاليًا على أنه هذه،

This moment, this situation, this time it is now, It is the moment being discussed.

هذه اللحظة، هذه الحالة، هذه المرة هي الآن، إنها اللحظة التي تتم مناقشتها.

If you want to describe the use or function of a certain thing,

إذا كنت تريد وصف استخدام أو وظيفة شيء معين،

we will often use the word that.

فغالبًا ما نستخدم كلمة ذلك.

"A wheelbarrow is a very useful thing that helps you move heavy objects around the garden."

"إن عربة اليد هي شيء مفيد جدًا يساعدك على تحريك الأشياء الثقيلة في جميع أنحاء الحديقة."

You are pointing out the use  of that particular thing.

أنت تشير إلى استخدام هذا الشيء بالذات.

In this case, the thing is a wheelbarrow.

في هذه الحالة، الشيء هو عربة يدوية.

Finally we have the word which is often used

وأخيرًا لدينا الكلمة التي غالبًا ما تستخدم

when we are talking about a third thing that might be introduced,

عندما نتحدث عن شيء ثالث يمكن تقديمه،

or a second thing that is also being described or offered.

أو شيء ثانٍ يتم وصفه أو تقديمه أيضًا.

The word is other but simply  this word refers to something

الكلمة أخرى ولكن هذه الكلمة ببساطة تشير إلى شيء

that is next to, or beside the  main thing being discussed.

مجاور أو بجانب الشيء الرئيسي الذي تتم مناقشته.

You might talk about the  other night or the other day.

قد تتحدث عن تلك الليلة أو ذلك اليوم.

We are not referring to now or today.

نحن لا نشير إلى الآن أو اليوم.

We are talking about the other day.

نحن نتحدث عن اليوم الآخر.

In this sense, it is always  a past event or moment.

وبهذا المعنى، فهو دائمًا حدث أو لحظة ماضية.

"I saw you the other day in town."

"لقد رأيتك في ذلك اليوم في المدينة."

Perhaps you see someone from a distance with a person you don't recognise.

ربما ترى شخصًا من مسافة بعيدة مع شخص لا تعرفه.

You know who your friend is, but who is the other person?

أنت تعرف من هو صديقك، ولكن من هو الشخص الآخر؟

The other person is there  but cannot be identified.

الشخص الآخر موجود ولكن لا يمكن التعرف عليه.

Other is always something else or another thing.

الآخر هو دائما شيء آخر أو شيء آخر.

Something unknown is often  referred to as the other.

غالبًا ما يشار إلى شيء غير معروف بالآخر.

We often refer to the state of no longer being alive as being on the other side.

غالبًا ما نشير إلى حالة عدم البقاء على قيد الحياة على أنها على الجانب الآخر.

That thing is mysterious and unknown.

وهذا الشيء غامض وغير معروف.

It is the other thing when being offered a choice of two things.

إنه الشيء الآخر عندما يُعرض عليك الاختيار بين شيئين.

You might be asked to choose one or the other.

قد يُطلب منك اختيار واحد أو آخر.

You can't have both.

لا يمكنك الحصول على كليهما.

You can only have one or the other.

يمكنك الحصول على واحد فقط أو الآخر.

So to clarify and make extra clear what I have talked about today.

لذا لتوضيح وتوضيح ما تحدثت عنه اليوم.

This is the thing being discussed or observed closely.

هذا هو الشيء الذي تتم مناقشته أو مراقبته عن كثب.

That is the thing which is seen from a distance,

وهو الشيء الذي يُرى من بعيد،

or from a point where it  can't be seen or observed.

أو من نقطة لا يمكن رؤيته أو ملاحظته.

And the other is whatever is added to it.

والآخر: ما أضيف إليه.

The extra thing is unknown.

الشيء الإضافي غير معروف.

It is an unknown event, something mysterious that remains in the shadow.

إنه حدث غير معروف، شيء غامض يبقى في الظل.

It is the other.

إنه الآخر.
