Today I'm going to talk about three parts of daily speech that we all use

Oggi parlerò di tre parti del discorso quotidiano che tutti usiamo

when describing or showing the position or state of something.

quando descriviamo o mostriamo la posizione o lo stato di qualcosa.

Today I will tell you all  about this, that and the other.

Oggi vi racconterò tutto di questo, quello e quest'altro.

Although this subject might sound complicated and difficult to understand,

Sebbene questo argomento possa sembrare complicato e difficile da comprendere,

it is in fact quite easy to explain the definitions of this and that.

in realtà è abbastanza semplice spiegare le definizioni di questo e quello.

First of all, the word this refers to something that has recently been mentioned.

Innanzitutto la parola this si riferisce a qualcosa che è stato menzionato di recente.

A familiar thing or a popular topic that will often be referred to as this.

Una cosa familiare o un argomento popolare a cui spesso ci si riferisce come questo.

It is a thing that most people are aware of or something that is easily recognizable.

È una cosa di cui la maggior parte delle persone è consapevole o qualcosa che è facilmente riconoscibile.

Something that is nearby or close at hand is often referred to as this.

Qualcosa che è vicino o a portata di mano viene spesso definito così.

It is the nearest thing or the most obvious object that can be seen.

È la cosa più vicina o l'oggetto più ovvio che si possa vedere.

The nearest thing to you that is being pointed out

La cosa più vicina a te che viene sottolineata

will often be referred to as this.

verrà spesso definita così.

Something that you are holding or have in your hand

Qualcosa che tieni in mano o che hai in mano

will normally be referred to as this.

verrà normalmente chiamato così.

For example, this pen, this watch, this hat.

Ad esempio, questa penna, questo orologio, questo cappello.

These objects are nearby and can clearly be seen.

Questi oggetti sono vicini e possono essere visti chiaramente.

This can also be used to  identify a specific person 

Questo può anche essere usato per identificare una persona

or thing that is being indicated or experienced.

o una cosa specifica che viene indicata o sperimentata.

You might refer to a person as this.

Potresti riferirti a una persona così.

"Don't listen to this person, he doesn't know what he's talking about."

"Non ascoltare questa persona, non sa di cosa sta parlando."

"This town has really changed over the years."

"Questa città è davvero cambiata nel corso degli anni."

Something recently mentioned might be referred to,

Si potrebbe fare riferimento a qualcosa menzionato di recente,

especially if it is something that many people are talking about.

soprattutto se si tratta di qualcosa di cui parlano molte persone.

"This new law they are introducing will really change the way we live our lives."

"Questa nuova legge che stanno introducendo cambierà davvero il modo in cui viviamo le nostre vite."

The word this is a pronoun, which means it can be 

La parola this è un pronome, il che significa che può essere

used as a way of identifying  something in a specific way.

usata come modo per identificare qualcosa in un modo specifico.

This is the definition of this.

Questa è la definizione di questo.

Then we have the word that,

Poi abbiamo la parola that,

which is a slightly more complex word.

che è una parola leggermente più complessa.

Despite its seeming simplicity,

Nonostante la sua apparente semplicità,

'that' is a very common word in both writing and speaking.

"quello" è una parola molto comune sia nella scrittura che nel parlato.

We use it as a determinator, (determiner) a demonstrated pronoun, and a relative pronoun.

Lo usiamo come determinante, (determinante) un pronome dimostrato e un pronome relativo.

We also use it as a conjunction to introduce 

Lo usiamo anche come congiunzione per introdurre

clauses referring to that as  a determinator and pronoun.

proposizioni che si riferiscono a esso come determinante e pronome.

We often use that to point to a thing or person.

Lo usiamo spesso per indicare una cosa o una persona.

We use it with singular nouns.

Lo usiamo con nomi singolari.

The single person is often  distant from the speaker 

La singola persona è spesso distante da chi parla

and sometimes closer to the listener,

e talvolta più vicina a chi ascolta,

or not visible to either  the speaker or the listener.

o non visibile né a chi parla né a chi ascolta.

"What was that?" "Did you hear that noise?"

"Che cos 'era questo?" "Hai sentito quel rumore?"

"Don't touch that bike. It belongs to me."

"Non toccare quella bicicletta. Appartiene a me."

A thing being pointed out or referred to at a distance is often referred to as that.

Una cosa che viene sottolineata o citata a distanza viene spesso definita così.

As a relative pronoun, we use that to introduce defining relative clauses.

Come pronome relativo, lo usiamo per introdurre clausole relative che definiscono.

We can use that instead of who, whom or which to refer to people, animals, and things.

Possiamo usarlo invece di who, who o which per riferirci a persone, animali e cose.

It is often seen as an informal way of pointing out a living creature or a person.

È spesso visto come un modo informale per indicare una creatura vivente o una persona.

It is worth noting that we are more likely to use that when referring to an animal or an object.

Vale la pena notare che è più probabile che lo usiamo quando ci riferiamo a un animale o a un oggetto.

In many situations, it might  be seen as insulting or rude 

In molte situazioni, potrebbe essere considerato offensivo o scortese

to describe a person as that.

"Who is that at the door?" "That is my friend."

"Chi è quello alla porta?" "Quello è il mio amico."

"I really don't want to be  seen in public with that."

If we are discussing two things that are at different distances from us,

Se parliamo di due cose che si trovano a distanze diverse da noi,

we will often refer to the nearest thing as this and the object furthest away as that.

spesso ci riferiremo alla cosa più vicina come questo e all'oggetto più lontano come quello.

For example, this tree and that field.

Ad esempio, questo albero e quel campo.

The field is much further away, so I will refer to it as that.

Il campo è molto più lontano, quindi lo chiamerò così.

Quite often the distance  and location of objects will 

Molto spesso la distanza e la posizione degli oggetti

decide whether we describe it as this or that.

The situation you are currently in will always be described as this,

This moment, this situation, this time it is now, It is the moment being discussed.

questo momento, questa situazione, questa volta è adesso, è il momento in discussione.

If you want to describe the use or function of a certain thing,

Se vuoi descrivere l'uso o la funzione di una certa cosa,

we will often use the word that.

useremo spesso la parola quello.

"A wheelbarrow is a very useful thing that helps you move heavy objects around the garden."

"Una carriola è una cosa molto utile che ti aiuta a spostare oggetti pesanti in giardino."

You are pointing out the use  of that particular thing.

Stai sottolineando l'uso di quella cosa particolare.

In this case, the thing is a wheelbarrow.

In questo caso, la cosa è una carriola.

Finally we have the word which is often used

Infine abbiamo la parola che viene spesso usata

when we are talking about a third thing that might be introduced,

quando si parla di una terza cosa che potrebbe essere introdotta,

or a second thing that is also being described or offered.

o di una seconda cosa che viene anche descritta o offerta.

The word is other but simply  this word refers to something

La parola è altro ma semplicemente questa parola si riferisce a qualcosa

that is next to, or beside the  main thing being discussed.

che si trova accanto o accanto all'argomento principale di cui si sta discutendo.

You might talk about the  other night or the other day.

Potresti parlare dell'altra sera o dell'altro giorno.

We are not referring to now or today.

Non ci riferiamo a adesso o oggi.

We are talking about the other day.

Stiamo parlando dell'altro giorno.

In this sense, it is always  a past event or moment.

In questo senso si tratta sempre di un evento o di un momento passato.

"I saw you the other day in town."

"Ti ho visto l'altro giorno in città."

Perhaps you see someone from a distance with a person you don't recognise.

Forse vedi qualcuno da lontano con una persona che non riconosci.

You know who your friend is, but who is the other person?

Sai chi è il tuo amico, ma chi è l'altra persona?

The other person is there  but cannot be identified.

L'altra persona è lì ma non può essere identificata.

Other is always something else or another thing.

Altro è sempre qualcos'altro o un'altra cosa.

Something unknown is often  referred to as the other.

Qualcosa di sconosciuto viene spesso definito l'altro.

We often refer to the state of no longer being alive as being on the other side.

Spesso ci riferiamo allo stato di non essere più vivi come all’essere dall’altra parte.

That thing is mysterious and unknown.

Quella cosa è misteriosa e sconosciuta.

It is the other thing when being offered a choice of two things.

È l'altra cosa quando viene offerta la possibilità di scegliere tra due cose.

You might be asked to choose one or the other.

Potrebbe esserti chiesto di scegliere l'uno o l'altro.

You can't have both.

Non puoi averli entrambi.

You can only have one or the other.

Puoi avere solo l'uno o l'altro.

So to clarify and make extra clear what I have talked about today.

Quindi, per chiarire e rendere ancora più chiaro ciò di cui ho parlato oggi.

This is the thing being discussed or observed closely.

Questa è la cosa che viene discussa o osservata da vicino.

That is the thing which is seen from a distance,

Cioè la cosa che si vede da lontano,

or from a point where it  can't be seen or observed.

o da un punto dove non può essere vista né osservata.

And the other is whatever is added to it.

E l'altro è tutto ciò che viene aggiunto ad esso.

The extra thing is unknown.

La cosa in più non è nota.

It is an unknown event, something mysterious that remains in the shadow.

È un evento sconosciuto, qualcosa di misterioso che rimane nell'ombra.

It is the other.

È l'altro.
