Today I'm going to talk about three parts of daily speech that we all use

Hoy voy a hablar de tres partes del discurso cotidiano que todos utilizamos

when describing or showing the position or state of something.

a la hora de describir o mostrar la posición o estado de algo.

Today I will tell you all  about this, that and the other.

Hoy os contaré todo sobre esto, aquello y lo otro.

Although this subject might sound complicated and difficult to understand,

Aunque este tema pueda parecer complicado y difícil de entender,

it is in fact quite easy to explain the definitions of this and that.

en realidad es bastante fácil explicar las definiciones de esto y aquello.

First of all, the word this refers to something that has recently been mentioned.

En primer lugar, la palabra esto hace referencia a algo que se ha mencionado recientemente.

A familiar thing or a popular topic that will often be referred to as this.

Algo familiar o un tema popular al que a menudo se hará referencia como este.

It is a thing that most people are aware of or something that is easily recognizable.

Es algo que la mayoría de la gente conoce o algo que es fácilmente reconocible.

Something that is nearby or close at hand is often referred to as this.

A menudo se hace referencia a algo que está cerca o al alcance de la mano.

It is the nearest thing or the most obvious object that can be seen.

Es lo más cercano o el objeto más obvio que se puede ver.

The nearest thing to you that is being pointed out

Lo más cercano a usted que se señala

will often be referred to as this.

a menudo se denominará así.

Something that you are holding or have in your hand

Normalmente se denominará así

will normally be referred to as this.

For example, this pen, this watch, this hat.

These objects are nearby and can clearly be seen.

This can also be used to  identify a specific person 

Esto también se puede utilizar para identificar a una persona

or thing that is being indicated or experienced.

You might refer to a person as this.

Podrías referirte a una persona así.

"Don't listen to this person, he doesn't know what he's talking about."

"No escuches a esta persona, no sabe de lo que habla".

"This town has really changed over the years."

"Esta ciudad realmente ha cambiado a lo largo de los años".

Something recently mentioned might be referred to,

Se podría hacer referencia a algo mencionado recientemente,

especially if it is something that many people are talking about.

especialmente si es algo de lo que mucha gente está hablando.

"This new law they are introducing will really change the way we live our lives."

"Esta nueva ley que están introduciendo realmente cambiará la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas".

The word this is a pronoun, which means it can be 

La palabra this es un pronombre, lo que significa que puede

used as a way of identifying  something in a specific way.

This is the definition of this.

Then we have the word that,

Luego tenemos la palabra eso,

which is a slightly more complex word.

que es una palabra un poco más compleja.

Despite its seeming simplicity,

A pesar de su aparente simplicidad,

'that' is a very common word in both writing and speaking.

"eso" es una palabra muy común tanto al escribir como al hablar.

We use it as a determinator, (determiner) a demonstrated pronoun, and a relative pronoun.

Lo usamos como determinante, (determinante), pronombre demostrado y pronombre relativo.

We also use it as a conjunction to introduce

clauses referring to that as  a determinator and pronoun.

We often use that to point to a thing or person.

We use it with singular nouns.

The single person is often  distant from the speaker 

La persona soltera suele estar distante del hablante

and sometimes closer to the listener,

y, a veces, más cerca del oyente,

or not visible to either  the speaker or the listener.

"What was that?" "Did you hear that noise?"

"Don't touch that bike. It belongs to me."

"No toques esa bicicleta. Me pertenece".

A thing being pointed out or referred to at a distance is often referred to as that.

A menudo se hace referencia así a algo que se señala o se hace referencia a distancia.

As a relative pronoun, we use that to introduce defining relative clauses.

Como pronombre relativo, lo usamos para introducir cláusulas relativas definitorias.

We can use that instead of who, whom or which to refer to people, animals, and things.

Podemos usar eso en lugar de quién, quién o cuál para referirnos a personas, animales y cosas.

It is often seen as an informal way of pointing out a living creature or a person.

It is worth noting that we are more likely to use that when referring to an animal or an object.

In many situations, it might  be seen as insulting or rude

to describe a person as that.

"I really don't want to be  seen in public with that."

If we are discussing two things that are at different distances from us,

we will often refer to the nearest thing as this and the object furthest away as that.

For example, this tree and that field.

The field is much further away, so I will refer to it as that.

Quite often the distance  and location of objects will

decide whether we describe it as this or that.

The situation you are currently in will always be described as this,

This moment, this situation, this time it is now, It is the moment being discussed.

If you want to describe the use or function of a certain thing,

we will often use the word that.

"A wheelbarrow is a very useful thing that helps you move heavy objects around the garden."

You are pointing out the use  of that particular thing.

In this case, the thing is a wheelbarrow.

Finally we have the word which is often used

when we are talking about a third thing that might be introduced,

or a second thing that is also being described or offered.

The word is other but simply  this word refers to something

that is next to, or beside the  main thing being discussed.

You might talk about the  other night or the other day.

Podrías hablar de la otra noche o del otro día.

We are not referring to now or today.

We are talking about the other day.

In this sense, it is always  a past event or moment.

En este sentido, siempre es un evento o momento pasado.

"I saw you the other day in town."

"Te vi el otro día en la ciudad".

Perhaps you see someone from a distance with a person you don't recognise.

Quizás veas a alguien de lejos con una persona que no reconoces.

You know who your friend is, but who is the other person?

Sabes quién es tu amigo, pero ¿quién es la otra persona?

The other person is there  but cannot be identified.

La otra persona está allí pero no puede ser identificada.

Other is always something else or another thing.

Otro es siempre otra cosa u otra cosa.

Something unknown is often  referred to as the other.

A algo desconocido se le suele llamar el otro.

We often refer to the state of no longer being alive as being on the other side.

A menudo nos referimos al estado de no estar vivo como si estuviéramos en el otro lado.

That thing is mysterious and unknown.

Esa cosa es misteriosa y desconocida.

It is the other thing when being offered a choice of two things.

La otra cosa es cuando te ofrecen elegir entre dos cosas.

You might be asked to choose one or the other.

Es posible que se le solicite que elija uno u otro.

You can't have both.

No puedes tener ambos.

You can only have one or the other.

Sólo puedes tener uno u otro.

So to clarify and make extra clear what I have talked about today.

This is the thing being discussed or observed closely.

Esto es lo que se discute u observa de cerca.

That is the thing which is seen from a distance,

Eso es lo que se ve desde lejos,

or from a point where it  can't be seen or observed.

And the other is whatever is added to it.

Y el otro es lo que se le añade.

The extra thing is unknown.

Lo extra se desconoce.

It is an unknown event, something mysterious that remains in the shadow.

Es un suceso desconocido, algo misterioso que permanece en la sombra.

It is the other.

Es el otro.
