10 Very British Adjectives

Here we go again Eat Sleep Dreamers with ten very British adjectives.

ها نحن ذا مجددا مع عشر صفات بريطانية جدا

If you haven't met me before my name is Tom and I teach fresh modern British English so that you can take

very British adjectives, if you are ready let's get going. Number one peckish. This

صفات بريطانية , اذا كنت جاهزا فلنبدأ . رقم واحد " peckish جائع " هذه

means a little bit hungry, you are not starving, you are just a little bit hungry. So you are

تعني جائع قليلا , اذا لم تكن جائع بدرجة كبيرة (هتموت م الجوع ) انت فقط جائع بدرجة بسيطه اذا انت

peckish. Let's put that into an example sentence 'I'm feeling a bit peckish, so I'm going to

"peckish جائع " فلنضعها في مثال أنا جائع قليلا لهذا سوف

grab a snack. Do you want something?' Alright, so I'm feeling a bit peckish, Peckish.

أحضر وجبة خفيفة . هل تريد شيئ ما ؟ _أعاد الجملة

Number two is rough. Now the gh there that is the /f/ sound. So it's rough. Rough has

ثاني صفة ( rough ) تنطق ال gh ف

a couple of different meanings. We're going to just look at two today. The first one is

لديها بعض المعاني المختلفة . سنأخذ 2 اليوم . الأول

to feel a bit ill, to be a bit sick. So 'I'm feeling a bit rough.' It means I feel ill

أن تكون مريض قليلا . " أنا مريض قليلا " انها تعني انا اشعر بالمرض ولكن ليس بصورة خطيرة

or I feel sick. Now kind of connected to that is that when we are hungover after a night

معني اخر متصل لهذا عندما تشرب *كحول * بعد

out we could also describe ourselves as feeling a bit rough 'I'm feeling really rough today.'

ليلة ف الخارج , نصف أنفسنا كالآتي .. " أنا أشعر بالمرض قليلا اليوم " *يقصد تعب الكحول

Now that is, probably you feel a bit ill, you have a headache or whatever, but it's

الآن انت غالبا تشعر بالمرض قليلا , لديك صداع او ما شابه

because of alcohol that's the main reason why you feel rough. So it could be genuinely

لكن الكحول السبب الاساسي لشعورك بالتعب . لهذا قد تكون ف الحقيقة

that you feel sick or it could be that because of alcohol you feel sick. Rough, it's a nice

تشعر بالمرض أو بسبب الكحول ( rough ) كلمة جيده

informal adjective. Rough. Let's look at an example sentence 'Ah mate, I'm feeling really

*صفة غير رسمية . فلنري مثالا " آه زميلي , انا حقا اشعر بالمرض هذا الصباح "

rough this morning.' Now it's important to mention right now that all these words are

الان يجب ان نذكر ان كل هذه الصفات غير رسمية ( لا تستخدم مع المدير مثلا )

very informal. So they are used commonly in spoken English, but they are all pretty informal

لهذا هم شائعين في التحدث لكنهم غير رسميين قليلا

so think about the situation that you are using your English in and then decide if these

لهذا فكر في الموقف الذي تستخدمها به ثم قرر اذا كانت مناسبة ام لا

words are appropriate for that situation. So again like a formal business meeting I

لهذا مجددا في اجتماع رسمي لن استخدم هذه الكلمات اوك ؟

wouldn't be using these words, ok? But, yeah, ok, let's move on to number three. I love

فلنأخذ ثالث صفة

this one, it's great 'gutted'. The -ed there is /id/ so gutted. This means very disappointed.

( gutted خائب الامل )

'She's gutted that she didn't get the job.' Number four pissed off. This is quite rude,

انها خائبة الامل انها لم تحصل علي الوظيفة 4 ( pissed off متضايق ) انها قليلا فظة *غير مهذبة

ok? So be careful about where you use this one. If you are pissed off, you are angry,

فاحذر اين تستخدمها اذا كنت متضايق pissed off ف انت غاضب جدا

ok? So for example 'My flat mate is really pissed off that I forgot his birthday.' So

مثلا " زميل سكني حقا متضايق/ غاضب لاني نسيت عيد ميلاده "

he's really angry that I forgot his birthday. If you want to add an object into that sentence

اذا اردت اضافة مفعول لهذه الجملة

you could say 'He's really pissed off with me that I forgot his birthday.' So you are

تستطيع قول " with me " تستخدم حرف الجر with ثم المفعول

pissed off with someone. Number five, knackered. Let's try that one again, knackered. Alright,

5 ( knackered متعب جدا )

this is very tired. If you are really tired, you have had a long day at work, you get home

تستخدمها عندما تكون متعب جدا مثلا عندما تعود للمنزل بعد يوم طويل في العمل

and you are like 'I'm knackered.' It means you are very tired. I'm knackered. Now in

ف تذهب للمنزل وتكون متعب جدا knackered

British English we have so many words to describe being drunk, I guess it's a cultural thing,

في البريطانية يوجد العديد من الكلمات لتصف كونك ثملا *أخمن انها تتعلق بالثقافه :D

but we use a lot of different words, loads of slang words that we could look at. In fact

لكننا نستخدم العديد من الكلمات

I'll do a vlog on that at some point. But the one I want to look at right now is 'pissed'

it's similar to pissed off but you take the off away and it means to be drunk. 'I am feeling

لكن ما سنأخذه الان ( pissed ثمل ) تشبه ( pissed off متضايق ) لكن بدون off تعني ان تكون ثملا

a bit rough today, I got quite pissed last night.' Alright so pissed there means drunk.

مثال " أنا اشعر بالقليل من التعب اليوم , لقد كنت ثملا الي حد ما امس "

Now as I said we've got lots of different words, a couple of other ones. Plastered,

that's quite a nice one, plastered. Wasted, 'I got absolutely wasted last night.' Hammered,

( wasted / hammered ) تعني ثمل ايضا

as well, means very drunk. 'You were hammered last night!' It means very drunk. And one

لقد كنت ثملا hammered امس تعني انك كنت ثملا جدا

other one I quite like, it's got a rude word so I'm not going to say it but 'sh*tfaced.

واحده اخري تعجبني الي حد ما ( sh*tfaced ) لكن بها كلمة غير مهذبة

'You were sh*tfaced last night!' yeah, alright so this one is very rude, be careful where

انها فظة جدا فكن حذرا عند استخدامها

you use that, probably just with your very close friends but yeah it's a good one. Very

غالبا تستخدمها مع اصدقائك المقربين جدا فقط

drunk is what it means. Number seven is hard. Now this of corse has many different meanings,

7 ( hard صعب ) لديها الكثير من المعاني

the meaning that I want to focus on is the informal adjective that means kind of tough

المعني اللي هنركز عليه غير رسمي تعني نوعا ما صعب /قوي

or doesn't like to show any weakness. We usually describe people like this so if you are quite

لا يظهر اي ضعف . عادة بنصف بها الناس اللي مبيخافوش بسهولة

hard you are not scared, you cold probably fight pretty well. Yeah you are a bit of a

تستطييع المقاتلة جيدا الي حد ما ا انت شخص صعب / قوي tough

tough person. 'You have to be pretty hard to get into the special armed forces.' Now

مثال " يجب ان تكون قويا الي حد ما لتنضم للقوات المسلحة الخاصة

hard might sometimes be a part of a phrase so 'hard as nails'. 'Look at that security

تعبير hard as nails مثال " انظر لهذا الحارس انه قوي جدا hard as nails "

guard, he looks hard as nails.' Number eight, chuffed. That's a nice one, chuffed. Now the

-ed there is a /t/ sound 'chuffed'. Ok, what does this mean? Well, it means very pleased

تعني مسرور جدا

or very happy about something. 'I'm really chuffed that you can come to my party.' So

مثال " انا حقا سعيد جدا chuffed انك تستطيع ان تأتي للحفلة "

I'm really pleased that you can come to my party. Chuffed, I like that one. Number nine

9( dodgy ) لها 3 معاني

is great, it has three different meanings. So the word is 'dodgy', let's try and say

that again 'dodgy', ok. Now three different meanings. Well one meaning is to be potentially

اول معني خطير الي حد ما

dangerous. So we describe maybe an area or a neighbourhood as being a bit dodgy. 'Don't

لذا نصف منطقة او حي بانه dodgy خطير فلا تذهب لهناك

go to that area, it's a bit dodgy.' Ok, so potentially dangerous, that's the first meaning.

هذا هو المعني الاول

Second meaning could be dishonest or untrustworthy. So you might describe a person as being a

bit dodgy. 'I really don't like my landlord, he's really dodgy.' So he's a bit untrustworthy,

unreliable, dishonest yeah that kind of thing. And the third meaning could be of low quality.

The example sentence 'I've had a lot of dodgy haircuts in my time.' True story! That is

a true story. So a lot of bad quality haircuts. Alright, so the three meanings again were

so potentially dangerous, dishonest or untrustworthy or bad quality. It's a great word, three different

meanings the same word, dodgy. And the last one, I've saved the best for last, I love

this one. Jammy. This means lucky, ok? If you are jammy you are lucky. For example 'Many

united scored such a jammy goal at the end.' So yeah maybe it was a very lucky goal. We

might describe a person as being jammy and in fact I think in very informal English you

might use a kind of a bit of a rude word after so 'you jammy____' 'You are such a jammy___'

Maybe your friend has just won a small amount on the lottery, you go 'you jammy b$st$rd'

and it just means you lucky so and so. So yeah, it's used in an affectionate way, I'm

not saying it in a rude way but I am using slightly rude words there so yeah 'you jammy

____' just means you lucky person. Alright those were ten very British adjectives. I'm
