Let's have a look at our first headline.

So, universities in Afghanistan are open again after a break,

And that is the word we're looking at - 'barred'. What does it mean?

So OK, it might help to think of 'bar' as a noun,

It is, yes. And it's used metaphorically.

So, the idea when you bar something is that you prevent it from happening.

Yeah, so 'barred' in the headline

Men trickle back to Afghan universities

So, we see that word 'barred' again - meaning prevent that we just explained.

and that word 'trickle' is usually connected to water, isn't it?

Yeah, so imagine a small stream of water moving slowly - it trickles.

So, for example, if you cry a tear trickles down your cheek,

but we don't just use it to talk about water.

We could also use it to describe people or things moving gradually.

Yes. So, in this headline 'trickle' is used

Yeah, and this word 'trickle' is used in other contexts as well. For example,

We are looking at the word 'playing' which I'm sure everybody knows.

Play is about fun.

It's about games.

I play football. I play chess.

So what's going on here?

Well yeah. In those senses, playing is fun because games aren't serious,

but here we're talking about playing with people's futures.
