Are you sometimes unsure how to use the verbs  say, tell, explain, and clarify correctly?

I often hear mistakes in the way these verbs are used.

كثيرا ما أسمع أخطاء في طريقة استخدام هذه الأفعال.

They're quite similar in meaning, but not in structure.

إنهما متشابهان تمامًا في المعنى ، لكن ليس في الهيكل.

In this lesson, we're going to look at the common mistakes I hear and review all the correct forms.

في هذا الدرس ، سنلقي نظرة على الأخطاء الشائعة التي أسمعها ونراجع جميع النماذج الصحيحة.

Right! Let's start by looking at the verb 'say'.

يمين! لنبدأ بالنظر إلى فعل "قل".

There are two sentences here. Which one sounds more correct to you?

هناك جملتان هنا. أيهما يبدو أكثر صحة بالنسبة لك؟

I said to him that I was surprised.

قلت له إنني فوجئت.

Or: I said him that I was surprised.

أو: قلت له إنني فوجئت.

The correct answer is a) I said to him that I was surprised.

الجواب الصحيح أ) قلت له إنني فوجئت.

With the verb 'say', you need the preposition 'to'.

مع الفعل "say" ، تحتاج إلى حرف الجر "to".

Right! Let's look at the verb 'tell'.

يمين! لنلقِ نظرة على فعل "أخبر".

Which one is correct here?

اي واحد هو الصحيح هنا؟

I told to him that I was surprised.

قلت له إنني فوجئت.

Or: I told him that I was surprised.

أو: أخبرته أنني فوجئت.

I'm sure you guessed the correct answer now is b) I told him that I was surprised.

أنا متأكد من أنك خمنت أن الإجابة الصحيحة الآن هي ب) أخبرته أنني فوجئت.

You don't need 'to' with 'tell'.

لست بحاجة إلى "to" مع "tell".

Right! Let's look at the next one.

يمين! دعونا نلقي نظرة على المرحلة التالية.

Say or tell. Which one sounds more correct to you?

قل او اخبر. أيهما يبدو أكثر صحة بالنسبة لك؟

I said that I was surprised. Or: I told that I was surprised.

قلت إنني فوجئت. أو: قلت إنني فوجئت.

The correct answer is: I said that I was surprised.

الجواب الصحيح: قلت إنني فوجئت.

This is because in this kind of structure, if you don't mention the person you were talking to, you can only use 'say'.

هذا لأنه في هذا النوع من البنية ، إذا لم تذكر الشخص الذي كنت تتحدث إليه ، يمكنك فقط استخدام "قل".

Right! Let's look at say and tell in some phrases.

يمين! دعونا نلقي نظرة على القول والتحدث في بعض العبارات.

Which one of these sounds more correct to you?

أي واحد من هذه الأصوات أكثر صحة بالنسبة لك؟

I told him goodbye. I told goodbye to him. I said him goodbye. Or: I said goodbye to him.

قلت له وداعا. قلت له وداعا. قلت له وداعا. أو: قلت له وداعا.

The correct answer here is d) I said goodbye to him.

الجواب الصحيح هنا هو د) قلت له وداعا.

Let's look at some other phrases with 'say'.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على بعض العبارات الأخرى مع "قل".

Say hello to your mum.

قل مرحبا لأمك.

Say something nice to me.

قل لي شيئا لطيفا.

Have you said your prayers today?

هل قلت صلاتك اليوم؟

Say this word out loud.

قل هذه الكلمة بصوت عالٍ.

Okay, let's look at another phrase and decide whether we should use say or tell and how.

حسنًا ، دعنا نلقي نظرة على عبارة أخرى ونقرر ما إذا كان يجب علينا استخدام say or tell وكيف.

Is it: She told me a story. She told a story to me.

هل هي: أخبرتني قصة. لقد حكت لي قصة

She said me a story. Or: She said a story to me.

قالت لي قصة. أو: قالت لي قصة.

Which one sounds more correct to you?

أيهما يبدو أكثر صحة بالنسبة لك؟

The correct answer here is a) She told me a story.

الجواب الصحيح هنا هو أ) أخبرتني قصة.

And here are some other phrases with 'tell'.

وهنا بعض العبارات الأخرى مع "أخبر".

He tells good jokes.

يروي نكات جيدة.

He told me several jokes.

قال لي عدة نكات.

She never tells lies.

لم تكذب أبدا.

She always tells us the truth.

هي دائما تقول لنا الحقيقة.

Right! That's all for say and tell.

يمين! هذا كل ما يمكن قوله وإخباره.

Let's move onto the verb 'explain'.

دعنا ننتقل إلى فعل "شرح".

We'll look at explain in three structures.

سننظر في الشرح في ثلاثة تراكيب.

In the first structure, we have two separate clauses connected with 'that'.

في الهيكل الأول ، لدينا جملتان منفصلتان متصلتان بـ "ذلك".

Have a look and tell me which one sounds more correct.

ألقِ نظرة وأخبرني أيهما يبدو أكثر صحة.

Is it a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

هل هو أ) شرحت له أنني كنت مبتدئًا.

Or is it b) I explained him that I was a beginner.

أم هو ب) شرحت له أنني كنت مبتدئًا.

The correct answer is a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

الإجابة الصحيحة هي أ) شرحت له أنني مبتدئ.

The verb 'explained' needs the preposition 'to'.

يحتاج الفعل "الموضح" إلى حرف الجر "إلى".

Okay, let's look at the second structure, which is to explain something.

حسنًا ، لنلقِ نظرة على الهيكل الثاني ، وهو شرح شيء ما.

For example, the issue.

على سبيل المثال ، القضية.

Which one is correct?

أيهما صحيح؟

a) I explained him the issue. Or: I explained the issue to him.

أ) شرحت له القضية. أو: شرحت له الأمر.

The correct answer is b) I explained the issue to him.

الجواب الصحيح ب) شرحت له الموضوع.

And finally, the third structure,  which includes words like what, when, how, why.

وأخيرًا ، الهيكل الثالث ، والذي يتضمن كلمات مثل ماذا ومتى وكيف ولماذا.

Which one sounds better to you?

أيهما أفضل بالنسبة لك؟

I explained to him what the issue was.  Or: I explained what the issue was to him.

شرحت له ما هي المشكلة. أو: شرحت له سبب المشكلة.

The correct answer is a) I explained to him what the issue was.

الجواب الصحيح أ) شرحت له ماهية الموضوع.

So, when we have a noun like 'the issue'. That comes first.

لذلك ، عندما يكون لدينا اسم مثل "المشكلة". هذا يأتي أولا.

You explain the issue to someone.

أنت تشرح المشكلة لشخص ما.

But when you  have a clause that starts with what, where, who, why,

ولكن عندما يكون لديك جملة تبدأ بماذا وأين ومن ولماذا ،

as this is quite long, you put it afterwards.

لأن هذا طويل جدًا ، فإنك تضعه بعد ذلك.

I explained to him what the issue is.

شرحت له ما هي القضية.

Just a small note that with this structure,  you don't have to mention the person.

مجرد ملاحظة صغيرة أنه مع هذا الهيكل ، لا داعي لذكر الشخص.

You can drop it if you want. So, you can say:

يمكنك إسقاطه إذا أردت. لذا يمكنك أن تقول:

I explained what the issue was. Or: She explained why she had left early.

شرحت ما هي المشكلة. أو: شرحت سبب مغادرتها مبكرًا.

And lastly, let's look at 'clarify'.

وأخيرًا ، لنلقِ نظرة على "توضيح".

Which one of these sentences is correct?

أي واحدة من هذه الجمل صحيحة؟

I clarified the issue to him. Or: I clarified the issue for him.

لقد أوضحت له المسألة. أو: أوضحت له الموضوع.

What's the correct preposition for clarify?

ما هو حرف الجر الصحيح للتوضيح؟

The correct preposition is 'for'.

حرف الجر الصحيح هو "for".

I often hear the mistake clarify something to someone.

كثيرًا ما أسمع الخطأ يوضح شيئًا لشخص ما.

Make sure you say: you clarify something for someone.

تأكد من أن تقول: أنت توضح شيئًا لشخص ما.
