Are you sometimes unsure how to use the verbs  say, tell, explain, and clarify correctly?

I often hear mistakes in the way these verbs are used.

לעתים קרובות אני שומע טעויות באופן השימוש בפעלים האלה.

They're quite similar in meaning, but not in structure.

הם די דומים במשמעותם, אבל לא במבנה.

In this lesson, we're going to look at the common mistakes I hear and review all the correct forms.

Right! Let's start by looking at the verb 'say'.

ימין! נתחיל בהסתכלות על הפועל 'אומר'.

There are two sentences here. Which one sounds more correct to you?

יש כאן שני משפטים. איזה מהם נשמע לך נכון יותר?

I said to him that I was surprised.

אמרתי לו שהופתעתי.

Or: I said him that I was surprised.

או: אמרתי לו שהופתעתי.

The correct answer is a) I said to him that I was surprised.

התשובה הנכונה היא א) אמרתי לו שהופתעתי.

With the verb 'say', you need the preposition 'to'.

עם הפועל 'אומר', אתה צריך את מילת היחס 'אל'.

Right! Let's look at the verb 'tell'.

ימין! נסתכל על הפועל 'לספר'.

Which one is correct here?

איזה מהם נכון כאן?

I told to him that I was surprised.

אמרתי לו שהופתעתי.

Or: I told him that I was surprised.

או: אמרתי לו שהופתעתי.

I'm sure you guessed the correct answer now is b) I told him that I was surprised.

אני בטוח שניחשת שהתשובה הנכונה כעת היא ב) אמרתי לו שהופתעתי.

You don't need 'to' with 'tell'.

אינך צריך 'ל' עם 'לספר'.

Right! Let's look at the next one.

ימין! בואו נסתכל על הבא.

Say or tell. Which one sounds more correct to you?

תגיד או תגיד. מה נשמע לך נכון יותר?

I said that I was surprised. Or: I told that I was surprised.

אמרתי שהופתעתי. או: אמרתי שהופתעתי.

The correct answer is: I said that I was surprised.

התשובה הנכונה היא: אמרתי שהופתעתי.

This is because in this kind of structure, if you don't mention the person you were talking to, you can only use 'say'.

הסיבה לכך היא שבמבנה מסוג זה, אם אינך מזכיר את האדם שאיתו דיברת, תוכל להשתמש רק ב'say'.

Right! Let's look at say and tell in some phrases.

ימין! בואו נסתכל על נגיד ונספר בכמה ביטויים.

Which one of these sounds more correct to you?

איזה מבין אלה נשמע לך נכון יותר?

I told him goodbye. I told goodbye to him. I said him goodbye. Or: I said goodbye to him.

אמרתי לו להתראות. אמרתי לו שלום. אמרתי לו שלום. או: נפרדתי ממנו.

The correct answer here is d) I said goodbye to him.

התשובה הנכונה כאן היא ד) נפרדתי ממנו.

Let's look at some other phrases with 'say'.

בואו נסתכל על כמה ביטויים אחרים עם 'נגיד'.

Say hello to your mum.

תגיד שלום לאמא שלך.

Say something nice to me.

תגיד לי משהו נחמד. האם

Have you said your prayers today?

אמרת את תפילותיך היום?

Say this word out loud.

אמור את המילה הזו בקול רם.

Okay, let's look at another phrase and decide whether we should use say or tell and how.

אוקיי, בוא נסתכל על ביטוי אחר ונחליט אם עלינו להשתמש ב- say or tell וכיצד.

Is it: She told me a story. She told a story to me.

האם זה: היא סיפרה לי סיפור. היא סיפרה לי סיפור.

She said me a story. Or: She said a story to me.

היא אמרה לי סיפור. או: היא אמרה לי סיפור.

Which one sounds more correct to you?

איזה מהם נשמע לך נכון יותר?

The correct answer here is a) She told me a story.

התשובה הנכונה כאן היא א) היא סיפרה לי סיפור.

And here are some other phrases with 'tell'.

והנה עוד כמה ביטויים עם 'ספר'.

He tells good jokes.

הוא מספר בדיחות טובות.

He told me several jokes.

הוא סיפר לי כמה בדיחות.

She never tells lies.

היא אף פעם לא מספרת שקרים.

She always tells us the truth.

היא תמיד אומרת לנו את האמת.

Right! That's all for say and tell.

ימין! זה הכל לומר ולספר.

Let's move onto the verb 'explain'.

נעבור לפועל 'הסבר'.

We'll look at explain in three structures.

נסתכל על הסבר בשלושה מבנים.

In the first structure, we have two separate clauses connected with 'that'.

במבנה הראשון, יש לנו שני סעיפים נפרדים הקשורים ל'זה'.

Have a look and tell me which one sounds more correct.

תסתכל ותגיד לי איזה מהם נשמע נכון יותר.

Is it a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

האם זה א) הסברתי לו שאני מתחיל.

Or is it b) I explained him that I was a beginner.

או שזה ב) הסברתי לו שאני מתחיל.

The correct answer is a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

התשובה הנכונה היא א) הסברתי לו שאני מתחיל.

The verb 'explained' needs the preposition 'to'.

הפועל 'הסבר' צריך את מילת היחס 'אל'.

Okay, let's look at the second structure, which is to explain something.

אוקיי, בואו נסתכל על המבנה השני, שהוא להסביר משהו.

For example, the issue.

למשל, הנושא.

Which one is correct?

איזה אחד הוא הנכון?

a) I explained him the issue. Or: I explained the issue to him.

א) הסברתי לו את הבעיה. או: הסברתי לו את הנושא.

The correct answer is b) I explained the issue to him.

התשובה הנכונה היא ב) הסברתי לו את הבעיה.

And finally, the third structure,  which includes words like what, when, how, why.

ולבסוף, המבנה השלישי, שכולל מילים כמו מה, מתי, איך, למה.

Which one sounds better to you?

איזה מהם נשמע לך יותר טוב?

I explained to him what the issue was.  Or: I explained what the issue was to him.

הסברתי לו מה הבעיה. או: הסברתי לו מה הבעיה.

The correct answer is a) I explained to him what the issue was.

התשובה הנכונה היא א) הסברתי לו מה הבעיה.

So, when we have a noun like 'the issue'. That comes first.

אז כשיש לנו שם עצם כמו 'הבעיה'. זה בא קודם.

You explain the issue to someone.

אתה מסביר למישהו את הבעיה.

But when you  have a clause that starts with what, where, who, why,

אבל כאשר  יש לך סעיף שמתחיל במה, איפה, מי, למה,

as this is quite long, you put it afterwards.

מכיוון שזה די ארוך, אתה שם אותו אחר כך.

I explained to him what the issue is.

הסברתי לו מה הבעיה.

Just a small note that with this structure,  you don't have to mention the person.

רק הערה קטנה שעם המבנה הזה, אתה לא צריך להזכיר את האדם.

You can drop it if you want. So, you can say:

אתה יכול לשחרר אותו אם אתה רוצה. אז, אתה יכול לומר:

I explained what the issue was. Or: She explained why she had left early.

הסברתי מה הבעיה. או: היא הסבירה למה היא עזבה מוקדם.

And lastly, let's look at 'clarify'.

ולבסוף, נתבונן ב'להבהיר'.

Which one of these sentences is correct?

איזה מהמשפטים האלה נכון?

I clarified the issue to him. Or: I clarified the issue for him.

הבהרתי לו את הנושא. או: ביררתי לו את הנושא.

What's the correct preposition for clarify?

מהי מילת היחס הנכונה להבהיר?

The correct preposition is 'for'.

מילת היחס הנכונה היא 'עבור'.

I often hear the mistake clarify something to someone.

לעתים קרובות אני שומע את הטעות מבהירה משהו למישהו.

Make sure you say: you clarify something for someone.

ודא שאתה אומר: אתה מבהיר משהו למישהו.
