I often hear mistakes in the way these verbs are used.

これらの動詞の使い方の間違いをよく耳にします。

They're quite similar in meaning, but not in structure.

意味はよく似ていますが、構造は似ていません。

In this lesson, we're going to look at the common mistakes I hear and review all the correct forms.

Right! Let's start by looking at the verb 'say'.

右！ まずは動詞の「say」から見ていきましょう。

There are two sentences here. Which one sounds more correct to you?

ここには 2 つの文があります。 どちらがより正確に聞こえますか?

I said to him that I was surprised.

私は驚いたと彼に言いました。

Or: I said him that I was surprised.

または：私は驚いたと彼に言いました。

The correct answer is a) I said to him that I was surprised.

正解は a) 私は驚いたと彼に言いました。

With the verb 'say', you need the preposition 'to'.

動詞「say」には、前置詞「to」が必要です。

Right! Let's look at the verb 'tell'.

右！ 動詞「tell」を見てみましょう。

Which one is correct here?

正しいのはどれですか。

I told to him that I was surprised.

私は驚いたと彼に話しました。

Or: I told him that I was surprised.

または：私は驚いたことを彼に話しました。

I'm sure you guessed the correct answer now is b) I told him that I was surprised.

正解は b）だと思いますが、驚いたことを彼に伝えました。

You don't need 'to' with 'tell'.

「tell」に「to」を付ける必要はありません。

Right! Let's look at the next one.

右！ 次を見てみましょう。

Say or tell. Which one sounds more correct to you?

言うか、伝えます。 どちらがより正しいと思いますか?

I said that I was surprised. Or: I told that I was surprised.

私は驚いたと言いました。 または：私は驚いたと言いました。

The correct answer is: I said that I was surprised.

正解は、「驚いたと言いました」です。

This is because in this kind of structure, if you don't mention the person you were talking to, you can only use 'say'.

これは、この種の構造では、 話している相手について言及しない場合、'say' しか使用できないためです。

Right! Let's look at say and tell in some phrases.

右！ say and tell をいくつかのフレーズで見てみましょう。

Which one of these sounds more correct to you?

次のうち、どれがより正しいと思いますか?

I told him goodbye. I told goodbye to him. I said him goodbye. Or: I said goodbye to him.

私は彼に別れを告げた。 私は彼に別れを告げた。 私は彼に別れを告げた。 または：私は彼に別れを告げました。

The correct answer here is d) I said goodbye to him.

ここでの正解は d) I said goodbye to him. です。

Let's look at some other phrases with 'say'.

「say」を使った他のフレーズを見てみましょう。

Say hello to your mum.

お母さんによろしくね。

Say something nice to me.

何かいいことを言ってください。

Have you said your prayers today?

今日、あなたは祈りを捧げましたか？

Say this word out loud.

この言葉を大声で言ってください。

Okay, let's look at another phrase and decide whether we should use say or tell and how.

では、別のフレーズを見て、 say と tell のどちらをどのように使うべきかを決めましょう。

Is it: She told me a story. She told a story to me.

そうですか: 彼女は私に話をしてくれました。 彼女は私に話をしてくれました。

She said me a story. Or: She said a story to me.

彼女は私に話をしました。 または: 彼女は私に話をしてくれました。

Which one sounds more correct to you?

どちらがより正しいと思いますか?

The correct answer here is a) She told me a story.

ここでの正解は a) 彼女は私に話をしてくれました。

And here are some other phrases with 'tell'.

そして、ここに「伝える」を使った他のいくつかのフレーズがあります。

He tells good jokes.

彼は良い冗談を言う。

He told me several jokes.

彼は私にいくつかの冗談を言った。

She never tells lies.

彼女は決して嘘をつきません。

She always tells us the truth.

彼女はいつも私たちに真実を伝えます。

Right! That's all for say and tell.

Let's move onto the verb 'explain'.

動詞「説明する」に移りましょう。

We'll look at explain in three structures.

Explain を 3 つの構造で見ていきます。

In the first structure, we have two separate clauses connected with 'that'.

最初の構造 では、「that」に接続された 2 つの別個の節があります。

Have a look and tell me which one sounds more correct.

見て、どちらがより正確に聞こえるか教えてください。

Is it a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

a) 私は初心者だと彼に説明しました。

Or is it b) I explained him that I was a beginner.

それとも b) 私は初心者だと彼に説明した。

The correct answer is a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

正解は a) 私は初心者だと彼に説明しました。

The verb 'explained' needs the preposition 'to'.

動詞 'explained' には前置詞 'to' が必要です。

Okay, let's look at the second structure, which is to explain something.

では、何かを説明するための 2 番目の構造を見てみましょう 。

For example, the issue.

たとえば、問題。

Which one is correct?

どちらが正しいですか？

a) I explained him the issue. Or: I explained the issue to him.

a) 私は彼にその問題を説明しました。 または: 私は彼に問題を説明しました。

The correct answer is b) I explained the issue to him.

正解は b) 私は彼にその問題を説明しました。

And finally, the third structure,  which includes words like what, when, how, why.

最後に、3 番目の構造です。 これには、何を、いつ、どのように、なぜなどの単語が含まれます。

Which one sounds better to you?

どちらがあなたにとってより良く聞こえますか?

I explained to him what the issue was.  Or: I explained what the issue was to him.

私は彼に何が問題なのかを説明しました。 または: 問題が何であるかを彼に説明しました。

The correct answer is a) I explained to him what the issue was.

正解は 、a) 問題の内容を彼に説明しました。

So, when we have a noun like 'the issue'. That comes first.

つまり、「問題」のような名詞がある場合です。 それが最初に来ます。

You explain the issue to someone.

誰かに問題を説明します。

But when you  have a clause that starts with what, where, who, why,

しかし、 what、where、who、why で始まる節がある場合

as this is quite long, you put it afterwards.

、これは非常に長いので、後に置きます。

I explained to him what the issue is.

私は彼に何が問題なのかを説明しました。

Just a small note that with this structure,  you don't have to mention the person.

You can drop it if you want. So, you can say:

I explained what the issue was. Or: She explained why she had left early.

And lastly, let's look at 'clarify'.

Which one of these sentences is correct?

次の文のうち正しいものはどれですか。

I clarified the issue to him. Or: I clarified the issue for him.

私は彼に問題を説明しました。 または: 私は彼のために問題を明確にしました.

What's the correct preposition for clarify?

明確にするための正しい前置詞.

The correct preposition is 'for'.

正しい前置詞は「for」です。

I often hear the mistake clarify something to someone.

間違いが誰かに何かを明確にするのをよく耳にします。

Make sure you say: you clarify something for someone.

必ず言ってください: 誰かのために何かを明確にします。
