I often hear mistakes in the way these verbs are used.

They're quite similar in meaning, but not in structure.

의미는 상당히 비슷하지만 구조는 다릅니다.

In this lesson, we're going to look at the common mistakes I hear and review all the correct forms.

Right! Let's start by looking at the verb 'say'.

오른쪽! 동사 'say'부터 살펴보겠습니다.

There are two sentences here. Which one sounds more correct to you?

여기에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다. 어느 것이 더 정확하게 들리나요?

I said to him that I was surprised.

나는 그에게 내가 놀랐다고 말했다.

Or: I said him that I was surprised.

또는: 나는 그에게 내가 놀랐다고 말했다.

The correct answer is a) I said to him that I was surprised.

정답은 a) 그에게 놀랐다고 말했습니다.

With the verb 'say', you need the preposition 'to'.

동사 'say'에는 전치사 'to'가 필요합니다.

Right! Let's look at the verb 'tell'.

오른쪽! 동사 '말하다'를 봅시다.

Which one is correct here?

여기서 어느 것이 맞나요?

I told to him that I was surprised.

나는 그에게 내가 놀랐다고 말했다.

Or: I told him that I was surprised.

또는: 나는 그에게 내가 놀랐다고 말했다.

I'm sure you guessed the correct answer now is b) I told him that I was surprised.

이제 정답을 추측하셨을 것입니다. b) 제가 놀랐다고 그에게 말했습니다.

You don't need 'to' with 'tell'.

'tell'에는 'to'가 필요하지 않습니다.

Right! Let's look at the next one.

오른쪽! 다음을 살펴보겠습니다.

Say or tell. Which one sounds more correct to you?

말하거나 말하십시오. 어느 것이 더 정확하게 들리나요?

I said that I was surprised. Or: I told that I was surprised.

나는 놀랐다고 말했다. 또는: 나는 놀랐다고 말했다.

The correct answer is: I said that I was surprised.

정답은 다음과 같습니다. 놀랐다고 말했습니다.

This is because in this kind of structure, if you don't mention the person you were talking to, you can only use 'say'.

이런 구조 에서는 대화 상대를 언급하지 않으면 'say'만 사용할 수 있기 때문입니다.

Right! Let's look at say and tell in some phrases.

오른쪽! 몇 가지 문구에서 say와 tell을 살펴보겠습니다.

Which one of these sounds more correct to you?

다음 중 어느 것이 더 옳게 들리나요?

I told him goodbye. I told goodbye to him. I said him goodbye. Or: I said goodbye to him.

나는 그에게 작별인사를 했다. 나는 그에게 작별 인사를 했다. 나는 그에게 작별인사를 했다. 또는: 나는 그에게 작별 인사를 했다.

The correct answer here is d) I said goodbye to him.

정답은 d) 그에게 작별 인사를 한 것입니다.

Let's look at some other phrases with 'say'.

'say'가 포함된 다른 구문을 살펴보겠습니다.

Say hello to your mum.

엄마에게 인사하세요.

Say something nice to me.

나에게 좋은 말을 해 주세요.

Have you said your prayers today?

오늘 기도를 하셨습니까?

Say this word out loud.

이 단어를 크게 말하십시오.

Okay, let's look at another phrase and decide whether we should use say or tell and how.

자, 다른 문구를 살펴보고 say 또는 tell을 사용할지 결정하고 how를 결정해 보겠습니다.

Is it: She told me a story. She told a story to me.

Is it: 그녀는 나에게 이야기를 했다. 그녀는 나에게 이야기를 들려주었다.

She said me a story. Or: She said a story to me.

그녀는 나에게 이야기를 말했다. 또는: 그녀는 나에게 이야기를 했습니다.

Which one sounds more correct to you?

어느 것이 더 정확하게 들리나요?

The correct answer here is a) She told me a story.

정답은 a) 그녀가 나에게 이야기를 들려주었다.

And here are some other phrases with 'tell'.

그리고 여기에 'tell'이 포함된 다른 문구가 있습니다.

He tells good jokes.

그는 좋은 농담을 합니다.

He told me several jokes.

그는 나에게 몇 가지 농담을 했다.

She never tells lies.

그녀는 절대 거짓말을 하지 않습니다.

She always tells us the truth.

그녀는 항상 우리에게 진실을 말한다.

Right! That's all for say and tell.

오른쪽! 그게 전부입니다.

Let's move onto the verb 'explain'.

동사 'explain'으로 넘어갑시다.

We'll look at explain in three structures.

세 가지 구조로 설명을 살펴보겠습니다.

In the first structure, we have two separate clauses connected with 'that'.

첫 번째 구조에는 'that'과 연결된 두 개의 개별 절이 있습니다.

Have a look and tell me which one sounds more correct.

살펴보고 어떤 것이 더 정확한지 알려주세요.

Is it a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

a) 그에게 내가 초보자라고 설명했다.

Or is it b) I explained him that I was a beginner.

아니면 b) 제가 초보자라고 설명했습니다.

The correct answer is a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

정답은 a) 그에게 제가 초보자라고 설명했습니다.

The verb 'explained' needs the preposition 'to'.

동사 '설명'에는 전치사 'to'가 필요합니다.

Okay, let's look at the second structure, which is to explain something.

자, 무언가를 설명하는 두 번째 구조를 살펴보겠습니다 .

For example, the issue.

예를 들어, 문제.

Which one is correct?

어느 것이 맞습니까?

a) I explained him the issue. Or: I explained the issue to him.

a) 그에게 문제를 설명했습니다. 또는: 그에게 문제를 설명했습니다.

The correct answer is b) I explained the issue to him.

정답은 b) 그에게 문제를 설명했습니다.

And finally, the third structure,  which includes words like what, when, how, why.

마지막으로 무엇, 언제, 어떻게, 왜와 같은 단어를 포함하는 세 번째 구조입니다.

Which one sounds better to you?

어느 쪽이 더 잘 들리나요?

I explained to him what the issue was.  Or: I explained what the issue was to him.

나는 그에게 문제가 무엇인지 설명했다. 또는: 나는 그에게 문제가 무엇인지 설명했습니다.

The correct answer is a) I explained to him what the issue was.

정답은 a) 그에게 문제가 무엇인지 설명했습니다.

So, when we have a noun like 'the issue'. That comes first.

따라서 'the issue'와 같은 명사가 있는 경우입니다. 그것이 먼저입니다.

You explain the issue to someone.

다른 사람에게 문제를 설명합니다.

But when you  have a clause that starts with what, where, who, why,

하지만 what, where, who, why

as this is quite long, you put it afterwards.

로 시작하는 절이 있을 때는 꽤 길기 때문에 뒤에 넣습니다.

I explained to him what the issue is.

나는 그에게 문제가 무엇인지 설명했다.

Just a small note that with this structure,  you don't have to mention the person.

이 구조 에서는 사람을 언급할 필요가 없습니다.

You can drop it if you want. So, you can say:

원하는 경우 삭제할 수 있습니다. 따라서 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다

I explained what the issue was. Or: She explained why she had left early.

. 문제가 무엇인지 설명했습니다. 또는: 그녀는 일찍 떠난 이유를 설명했습니다.

And lastly, let's look at 'clarify'.

그리고 마지막으로 '명확히'를 살펴보겠습니다.

Which one of these sentences is correct?

다음 문장 중 어느 것이 맞나요?

I clarified the issue to him. Or: I clarified the issue for him.

그에게 문제를 명확히 설명했습니다. 또는: 나는 그를 위해 문제를 명확히 했습니다.

What's the correct preposition for clarify?

명확히 하기 위한 올바른 전치사는 무엇입니까?

The correct preposition is 'for'.

올바른 전치사는 'for'입니다.

I often hear the mistake clarify something to someone.

나는 종종 그 실수가 누군가에게 무언가를 명확히 하는 것을 듣습니다.

Make sure you say: you clarify something for someone.

다음과 같이 말하세요. 누군가를 위해 무언가를 명확히 합니다.
