I often hear mistakes in the way these verbs are used.

Sento spesso errori nel modo in cui vengono usati questi verbi.

They're quite similar in meaning, but not in structure.

Sono abbastanza simili nel significato, ma non nella struttura.

In this lesson, we're going to look at the common mistakes I hear and review all the correct forms.

Right! Let's start by looking at the verb 'say'.

Giusto! Cominciamo guardando il verbo 'dire'.

There are two sentences here. Which one sounds more correct to you?

Ci sono due frasi qui. Quale ti sembra più corretto?

I said to him that I was surprised.

Gli ho detto che ero sorpreso.

Or: I said him that I was surprised.

Oppure: gli ho detto che ero sorpreso.

The correct answer is a) I said to him that I was surprised.

La risposta corretta è a) gli ho detto che ero sorpreso.

With the verb 'say', you need the preposition 'to'.

Con il verbo 'say', hai bisogno della preposizione 'to'.

Right! Let's look at the verb 'tell'.

Giusto! Diamo un'occhiata al verbo 'raccontare'.

Which one is correct here?

Quale è corretto qui?

I told to him that I was surprised.

Gli ho detto che ero sorpreso.

Or: I told him that I was surprised.

Oppure: gli ho detto che ero sorpreso.

I'm sure you guessed the correct answer now is b) I told him that I was surprised.

Sono sicuro che ora hai indovinato la risposta corretta è b) gli ho detto che ero sorpreso.

You don't need 'to' with 'tell'.

Non hai bisogno di "to" con "tell".

Right! Let's look at the next one.

Giusto! Diamo un'occhiata al prossimo.

Say or tell. Which one sounds more correct to you?

Dire o raccontare. Quale ti sembra più corretto?

I said that I was surprised. Or: I told that I was surprised.

Ho detto che ero sorpreso. Oppure: ho detto che ero sorpreso.

The correct answer is: I said that I was surprised.

La risposta corretta è: ho detto che ero sorpreso.

This is because in this kind of structure, if you don't mention the person you were talking to, you can only use 'say'.

Questo perché in questo tipo di struttura, se non menzioni la persona con cui stavi parlando, puoi usare solo 'say'.

Right! Let's look at say and tell in some phrases.

Giusto! Diamo un'occhiata a dire e raccontare in alcune frasi.

Which one of these sounds more correct to you?

Quale di questi ti sembra più corretto?

I told him goodbye. I told goodbye to him. I said him goodbye. Or: I said goodbye to him.

Gli ho detto addio. Gli ho detto addio. Gli ho detto addio. Oppure: l'ho salutato.

The correct answer here is d) I said goodbye to him.

La risposta corretta qui è d) l'ho salutato.

Let's look at some other phrases with 'say'.

Diamo un'occhiata ad alcune altre frasi con 'dire'.

Say hello to your mum.

Saluta tua madre.

Say something nice to me.

Dimmi qualcosa di carino.

Have you said your prayers today?

Hai detto le tue preghiere oggi?

Say this word out loud.

Pronuncia questa parola ad alta voce.

Okay, let's look at another phrase and decide whether we should use say or tell and how.

Ok, diamo un'occhiata a un'altra frase e decidiamo se utilizzare say o tell e come.

Is it: She told me a story. She told a story to me.

Cos'è: mi ha raccontato una storia. Mi ha raccontato una storia.

She said me a story. Or: She said a story to me.

Mi ha raccontato una storia. Oppure: mi ha raccontato una storia.

Which one sounds more correct to you?

Quale vi suona più corretto?

The correct answer here is a) She told me a story.

La risposta corretta qui è a) Mi ha raccontato una storia.

And here are some other phrases with 'tell'.

E qui ci sono alcune altre frasi con 'tell'.

He tells good jokes.

Racconta buone barzellette.

He told me several jokes.

Mi ha raccontato diverse barzellette.

She never tells lies.

Lei non dice mai bugie.

She always tells us the truth.

Lei ci dice sempre la verità.

Right! That's all for say and tell.

Giusto! Questo è tutto per dire e raccontare.

Let's move onto the verb 'explain'.

Passiamo al verbo 'spiegare'.

We'll look at explain in three structures.

Vedremo spiegare in tre strutture.

In the first structure, we have two separate clauses connected with 'that'.

Nella prima struttura, abbiamo due clausole separate collegate a "quello".

Have a look and tell me which one sounds more correct.

Dai un'occhiata e dimmi quale suona più corretto.

Is it a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

È a) Gli ho spiegato che ero un principiante.

Or is it b) I explained him that I was a beginner.

O è b) gli ho spiegato che ero un principiante.

The correct answer is a) I explained to him that I was a beginner.

La risposta corretta è a) gli ho spiegato che ero un principiante.

The verb 'explained' needs the preposition 'to'.

Il verbo "spiegato" richiede la preposizione "to".

Okay, let's look at the second structure, which is to explain something.

Ok, diamo un'occhiata alla seconda struttura, che serve a spiegare qualcosa.

For example, the issue.

Ad esempio, il problema.

Which one is correct?

Quale è corretto?

a) I explained him the issue. Or: I explained the issue to him.

a) Gli ho spiegato il problema. Oppure: gli ho spiegato il problema.

The correct answer is b) I explained the issue to him.

La risposta corretta è b) gli ho spiegato il problema.

And finally, the third structure,  which includes words like what, when, how, why.

E infine, la terza struttura, che include parole come cosa, quando, come, perché.

Which one sounds better to you?

Quale ti suona meglio?

I explained to him what the issue was.  Or: I explained what the issue was to him.

Gli ho spiegato qual era il problema. Oppure: gli ho spiegato qual era il problema.

The correct answer is a) I explained to him what the issue was.

La risposta corretta è a) gli ho spiegato qual era il problema.

So, when we have a noun like 'the issue'. That comes first.

Quindi, quando abbiamo un nome come "il problema". Quello viene prima.

You explain the issue to someone.

Spieghi il problema a qualcuno.

But when you  have a clause that starts with what, where, who, why,

Ma quando  hai una frase che inizia con cosa, dove, chi, perché,

as this is quite long, you put it afterwards.

dato che è piuttosto lunga, la metti dopo.

I explained to him what the issue is.

Gli ho spiegato qual è il problema.

Just a small note that with this structure,  you don't have to mention the person.

Solo una piccola nota che con questa struttura non devi menzionare la persona.

You can drop it if you want. So, you can say:

Puoi lasciarlo cadere se vuoi. Quindi, puoi dire:

I explained what the issue was. Or: She explained why she had left early.

ho spiegato qual era il problema. Oppure: Ha spiegato perché se n'era andata prima.

And lastly, let's look at 'clarify'.

E infine, diamo un'occhiata a "chiarire".

Which one of these sentences is correct?

Quale di queste frasi è corretta? Gli

I clarified the issue to him. Or: I clarified the issue for him.

ho chiarito il problema. Oppure: gli ho chiarito la questione.

What's the correct preposition for clarify?

Qual è la preposizione corretta per chiarire?

The correct preposition is 'for'.

La preposizione corretta è 'per'.

I often hear the mistake clarify something to someone.

Sento spesso l'errore chiarire qualcosa a qualcuno.

Make sure you say: you clarify something for someone.

Assicurati di dire: chiarisci qualcosa a qualcuno.
