because native English speakers use idioms all the time

لأن المتحدثين الاصلين للانجليزية يستخدمون هذة التراكيب طوال الوقت

and to sound more natural and creative and interesting

لكى تصبح اللغه طبيعيه اكثر وممتعه

when you speak English,

عندما تتحدث الانجليزيه

you should definitely be learning

and practising some of them regularly.

Now as much as you dislike learning idioms,

الان و علي الرغم من انك تكره تعلم المصطلحات

they really are a wonderful part of language

الا انهم حقا يشكلون جزء ممتع من اللغة

because you can perfectly express how you're feeling

لانك تستطيع ان تعبر عن مشاعرك بشكل صحيح

in a really entertaining way.

و بطريقة ممتعة جدا

I could tell you that the car was going fast

تطيع ان اخبرك ان السيارة كانت تسير بسرعة

or I could tell you that that

او استطيع ان اخبرك ان

car was going lightning fast!

السيارة كانت تسير بسرعة هائلة

Idioms give me much more detail and expression

حيث ان المصطلحات توفر لي التعبيرات و التفاصيل

than just a normal adjective.

اكثر من الصفة العادية

They also help to push your English to a higher level.

و تساعد المصطلحات أيضا ان ترفع من مستوي لغتك الانجليزية

Native speakers use idioms all the time

المتحدثون المحليون يستخدمون المصطلحات طوال الوقت

so becoming familiar with them,

لذا تعلمهم

especially the common ones,

و خصوصا المصطلحات الشائعة

is really essential to help with your understanding.

التي حقا ستساعدك علي فهم اللغة

And if you can start using these idioms as well,

three possible meanings

and you just need to choose which

is the correct definition.

So we'll start off with a few easier ones

لذا سنبدأ بمصطلحات سهلة

that are very common and then we'll get going

و شائعة جدا و ثم سوف تضطر ان تتعامل

with some more trickier ones.

مع بعض المصطلحات الخادعة

I know that you like a challenge

اعلم انك تحب التحدي

so we're definitely going to give those tricky ones a go,

but this is a really good example to remind us

و كن هذا مثال حقا جيد ليذكرنا

not to get tricked by the literal meaning

الا ننخدع بالمعني الحرفي

of these idioms, right? Of the words in these idioms.

لهذه المصطلحات صحيح؟ في هذا المصطلح

'A piece of cake' is literally a type of dessert

"قطعة من الكعكة " فالمعني الحرفي انها نوع من الحلوي

but the idiom 'a piece of cake' is used to describe

و لكن المصطلح يستخدم ليصف

a situation that's really easy.

موقف سهل جدا

All right here's the next one.

حسنا إليك المصطلح التالي

Does this describe someone who

هل هذا يصف شخص

does it

يفعل هذا

او هذا

If you watched my lesson last week,

you probably know the answer to this one.

سوف تعرف حقا الاجابة

Now remember, we're not talking about someone

و الان تذكر ، اننا لا نتحدث عن شخص

who literally loves bugs

و الذي بالمعني الحرفي يحب الحشرات

so much that they wouldn't hurt a fly.

كثيرا لدرجة انه لن يأذي ذبابة

This idiom is great to use when you describe someone

هذا المصطلح رائع عندما تستخدمه في وصف شخص

who's very gentle and kind.

طيب جدا و عطوف

It's the total opposite of aggressive.

فهو تماما عكس الشحص العدواني

She's one of the kindest people that I know.

هي من الاشخاص الطيبين الذين أعرفهم

So far so good, right? Let's keep going.

حتي الان جيدا صحيح . لنستمر !

Now is this

و الان هل هذا

or can you use it when you have an injury

او هل تستطيع ان تستخدمه عندما يكون لديك جرح

or does it mean

او هل يعني

Have you heard of this one before?

هل سبق لك و سمعن عن هذا المصطلح من قبل

A 'pain in the neck' is something or someone that's

" الم في الرقبة " هو شخص او شئ

really annoying.

مزعج جدا

All right here's the next one - one that I use all the time.

حسنا اليك التالي ، مصطلح استخدمه طوال الوقت

So does that mean

فهل هذا يعني

or

او

or

او

What do you think?

ماذا تعتقد ؟

It means to leave a place.

هل يعني ان تمتلك مكانا

Or to start going somewhere.

او ان تبدأ في المغادرة لمكان ما؟

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back

* غادر ولاتعود

no more, no more, no more..

ليس بعد الان، ليس بعد الان*

Notice that you can use this idiom whether you're

لاحظ انك تستطيع ان تستخدم هذا المصطلح اينما انت

leaving somewhere by foot, by car or by bike.

اذا كنت تغادر مكان ما سيرا او بسيارة او بطائرة

And if you hit the deck,

و لكن هذا المصطلح

well that's when you fall down, right?

يستخدم عندما تسقط علي الارض

So keep that in mind I was trying to trick you.

لذا خذ في عين الاعتبار اني كنت احاول ان اخدعك

If you hit the deck it means you fall over.

فهذا المصطلح يعني انك تسقط

And it sounds kind of similar, doesn't it?

و هما يبدوان متشابهين الي حد ما ، اليس كذلك؟

What about

ماذا عن؟

Have you heard of it before?

هل سبق و سمعت له من قبل؟

Does it mean

هل يعني؟

or

او؟

What do you think?

ماذا تعتقد؟

Remember that we're not talking about

تذكر اننا لا نتكلم عن

something literal, right? So don't get confused

المعني الحرفي ، صحيح؟ ، لذا لا تتشتت

by thinking that there was a boat and water involved

و تفكر انه هناك قارب و ماء

to use this idiom.

عندما تستعمل هذا المصطلح

To 'jump ship' means that you're quitting something,

فأنت تتحدث عن الاقلاع عن شئ ما

that you quit or you leave or you abandon

فأنت تتوقف او تترك او تتخلي عن

your teammates or a group of people, right?

زملائك او مجموعة من الناس ، صحيح؟

You can use 'jumping ship' in any of those situations.

يمكنك ان تستخدم المصطلح في اي من هذه المواقف

Annoying!

How are you doing so far?

كيف تبلي في الا ختبار حتي الان؟

Let's take this up a level.

هيا بنا نتقدم لمستوي أعلي

These idioms are going to get a little trickier now.

هذا المصطلحات سوف تكون خادعة اكثر الان

What about when you have

ماذا عن عندما تمتلك

Is that when

هل هذا عندما

or does it

او

or is it

او

Which one?

اي واحد؟

It's C!

انها الإجابة "c"

It's the desire to travel.

انها الرغبة في السفر

So someone with itchy feet is ready for a change.

لذا هذا المصطلح يعني ان الشخص مستعد للتغير

They want to change their daily routine and just

فهو يريد ان يغير الروتين اليومي و

get out on the road and see the world.

يخرخ و يري العالم

They want to travel.

فهم يريدوا ان يسافروا

Do you have itchy feet? I wonder.

هل انت محب للسفر و التغير ، انا اتسائل؟

Where would you like to travel to?

أين تريد ان تسافر؟

What places are on your bucket list?

ماهي الاماكن التي تريد زيارتها في قائمة السفر خاصتك؟

That's another idiom right there!

هذا مصطلح أخر هنا

Now what if I said you have your head in the clouds?

و الان ماذا لو قلنا ان رأسك في السحاب؟

What do I mean?

ماذا أعني؟

Is that

هل هذا؟

or

او؟

or is it

او؟

Now if your head is in the clouds, then you're

حسنا، اذا كان عقلك في السحاب فأنت

dreamy and distracted

متشتت و غير منتبه

and you're thinking about other things.

و انت تفكر في أشاء اخري

Your mind is elsewhere, somewhere else.

و عقلك في مكان أخر

You're not paying attention.

فأنت لا تبدي اهتمام

Ashley's a terrible driver!

أشلي سائقة سيئة

I've got a few people in mind that I know

من الاشخاص الذين اعرفهم

who sometimes have their head in the clouds.

و التي احيانا تائهة و متشتتة

But do you?

و كن هل انت

Do you know anyone who's got their head in the clouds?

تعرف اي شخص متغيب العقل و غير منتبه؟

If I said that I wanted to

اذا قلت انني اريد ان

do I want to

هل اريد ذلك

do I want to

او ذلك

or am I trying

او احاول

How confident are you about this one?

كم لديك من الثقة في هذا المصطلح؟

This one is a very common one too.

هذا المصطلح شائع جدا أيضا

If you have something that's worrying you, a problem

اذا كان لديك شئ يقلقك ، لديك مشكلة

or something that's difficult to say

او شئ صعب عليك قوله

and you finally say it out loud to someone

و فجأة قولته لشخص ما بصوت عالي

then you've got it off your chest.

فأنت ألقته بعيدا عن صدرك

So when you get something off your chest,

لذا عندما تلقي بشئ ما بعيدا عن صدرك

you feel relieved. You feel much better.

فأنت تشعر بالأنطلاق . تشعر انك بأفضل حال

I need to tell you that

اريد ان اخبرك ان

something's been bothering me right?

شئ ما ازعجني صحيح؟

This is quite a good way to start an awkward

فهذه طريقة جيدة لكي تبدأ بها محادثة

conversation, you know, if you

محرجة ، كما تعلم اذا كنت

have to tell your housemate that you're really

تريد ان تخبر شريكك في المنزل انك حقا

sick of cleaning up in the bathroom after them.

سئمت من تنظيف الحمام

Now the next one is under the weather.

و الان المصطلح الاخر هو" تحت الطقس"

Quite a common one. But does it mean

و هو مصطلح شائع و لكن هل يعني

or is it

او هذا؟

Now this has nothing to do with the actual weather.

و الان هل لا يتكلم عن الطقس

Answer A is the correct answer.

الاجابة "A" هي الاجابة الصيحة

So when you're feeling low in energy, maybe your

لذا فإذا كنت تشعر بإنخفاض طاقتك فربما

head hurts or you have a sore throat,

رأسك يؤلمك أو ان لديك التهاب في الحلق

you're feeling under the weather.

فأنت لا تشعر بخير

So it's never fun to feel under the weather

لذا فليس من الجيد ان تشعر بالسوء

but it is important to note that this idiom

و لكن من المهم ان تلاحظ ان هذا المصطلح

is used when you're not quite feeling a hundred percent.

يستخدم عندما لا تشعر انك بخير بنسبة ١٠٠%

Maybe you have the flu or a headache or something

فربما لديك حمي أو صداع او شئ ما

but it's not used for serious illnesses,

just when you're feeling

ولكنه لا يستخدم مع الامراض الخطيرة

بل استخدمه عندما تسعر

not quite as good as you normally do.

انك لست بالحال الجيد كالمعتاد

Now what about

والان ماذا عن

Does it mean

هل هذا يعني؟

Does it mean

او؟

Or does it mean

او؟

So the answer is C.

حسنا، الاجابة هي "c"

Did you get that one?

هل حدث لك هذا؟

Or are you having a change of heart

او لديك تغير في القلب أي "تغير في الرأي"

now that you're taking this idioms quiz?

Maybe you want to stop.

If you have a change of heart,

you change your opinion or your idea about something.

اذا كان لديك تغير في القلب

فأنت تغير رأيك او فكرتك عن شئ ما

So let's look at a couple of examples.

لذا هيا نطبق المصطلح علي مثالين

All right, ready to take this quiz to a whole new level?

حسنا، هل أنت مستعد لكي تسمو بهذا الاختبار الي مستوي جديد

What about

ماذا عن؟

Have you heard it before?

هل سبق و سمعت عنه من قبل؟

Does it mean

هل يعني؟

Or does it mean to be

او؟

Did you choose B?

هل اخترت "B"

If I was wrapped around someone's finger then I would

إذا كنت ملتفة حول إصبع شخصا ما فأنا

do anything for them

قد أفعل اي شئ من أجله

and if you have someone wrapped around your finger,

و إذا لديك شخص ملتف حول إصبعك

then you've got complete control over them

فأنت تسيطر عليه بالكامل

because they'll do anything to make you happy.

لانه سيفعل اي شئ ليجعلك سعيدا

So if you think about kids,

فإذا نظرت الي الاطفال

often kids have

فهم غالبا

their parents wrapped around their fingers

يسيطرون علي آبائهم

and pay attention to who is wrapped around someone's

و يهتمون بالمسيطرون عليهم

finger, right?

صحيح؟

In this idiom.

في هذا المصطلح

The person wrapped around the finger is not the one

الشخص الذي يلتف حول إصبع شخصا ما ليس بالشخص

in control. They are the weakest one.

الذي يسيطر بل هو الشخص الأضعف

Now this idiom is most commonly used as a verb.

و الان هذا المصطلح يستخدم بتوسع كفعل

So we could say:

لذا فيمكننا ان نقول

Here's another one that I use all the time.

إليك مصطلح أخر استخدمه طوال الوقت

So does that mean

فهل يعني؟

Or does it mean

او؟

Or does it mean

او؟

I'm actually really awful at winging it,

في الواقع انا سيئة في فعل الاشياء بدون خطط

it's not one of my skills. I'm a planner.

انها ليست واحدة من مهاراتي ، فأنا شخص أعتمد علي الخطط

So if you wing something, you do it without a plan.

لذا فهذا المصطلح يعني ان تفعل الاشياء بدون خطط

You improvise,

انت ترتجل

you make it up and you just invent it as you go.

انت تفعل الاشياء و تتركها للظروف بدون خطط

How about this one?

ماذا عن هذا المصطلح؟

Is that when you

هل يقال عندما؟

Is it when you

او؟

Or is it when you

او؟

So when you choke on something while you're eating.

او عندنا تخنق شخص أثناء الطعام

Now I'll give you a little hint here.

حسنا لأعطيك تلميح صغير هنا

The idiom 'to be in/over your head'

المصطلح "to be in/over your head"

has a very similar meaning.

لديه معني مشابه جدا

So you can use both of these idioms

لذا فيمكنك إستخدام كلا المصطلحين

to describe someone who's trying to do something

لتصف شخص يحاول فعل شئ

that is above their abilities or it's too difficult for them.

فوق قدرته أو صعب جدا عليه

Now can you think of a time when you

و الان فكر في الوقت الذي فيه

bit off more than you could chew?

تقضم اكثر مما تستطيع ان تمضغ

It's not really a great feeling because

انه ليس بشعور جيد لأنه

it's when you want to do something well

يقال عندما تريد ان شئ ما جيدا

but you just have too much to do.

و كن يتحتم عليك فعل الكثير

You've got too much on your plate.

فأنت لديك الكثير في طبقك اي " لديك أمور كثير لتنجزها"

That's another idiom right there.

انه مصطلح اخر

You've got too much in your plate you're too busy, right?

عندما يكون لديك الكثير في طبقك ، فأنت مشغول صحيح؟

It's too hard so you bit off more than you could chew.

انه شئ صعب جدا لذا فانت لديك أشياء كثيرة لتقوم بها

What about if you

ماذا عن؟

Does that mean

هل يعني؟

Or

و؟

Or

او؟

Well?

حسنا

This one's tricky.

هذا المصطلح خادع

I'm actually trying to trick you here.

في الواقع احاول ان اخدعك هنا

The answer is C.

الاجابة هي " c"

This idiom is often used in a business context

هذا المصطلح غالبا مايستخدم في الحياة العملية

and it's used to describe the benefits or positive things

و يستخدم لوصف المزايا او الجوانب الإجابية

that someone brings to a situation.

التي يجلبها الشخص في موقف

So if someone has a good idea or can contribute

لذا فاذا كان الشخص لديه فكرة جيدة او يستطيع ان يساهم

something new or they have some kind of helpful skill,

في شئ جديد او لديه نوع ما من مهارات المساعدة

then all of those things can be brought to the table

فهذه الاشياء يمكن جلبها الي الطاولة

to contribute.

للمساهمة

It's a skill that I can contribute.

انها مهارة المساهمة

And it's always a good idea to bring something

و إنها دائما فكرة جيدة ان تساهم بشئ ما

to the table if you're trying to be helpful.

اذا كنت تحاول ان تكون متعاون

If you're trying to be a good teammate

و ان تكون زميل جيد

or if you want to make a good impression,

او تريد ان يأخذ عنك الناس إنطباع جيد

you bring something to the table.

فأنت تحضر اشياء الي الطاولة

Now you're doing awesome!

I've just got a couple more for you. What about

Is that when you're in

هل يقال عندما؟

Or is it when you

Or does it mean

If you're in a pickle.

لو كنت في مخلل" ورطة"

It's got nothing to do with pickles or even food, actually.

لا نعني هنا اننا نتحدث عن المخلل او حتي الطعام

The answer is A

الاجابة هي " A"

and it's when you're in a tricky or a difficult situation.

و تستخدم عندما تعبر عن موقف خادع او صعب

The car's just broken down and I'm late for work.

لقد تعطلت السيارة و انا متأخر علي العمل

And lastly,

و في الختام

what if I said that something might

ماذا إذا قلت ان هناك شئ ربما

Would I be suggesting that I was

ربما اقترح انني

Or that I was

او ؟

Or am I suggesting that I'm

او؟

Imagine that a hundred people arrived at your house

تخيل ان هناك مائة شخص في منزلك

for a party.

من أجل حفلة

Things would probably get out of hand,

فالامور ستكون بالتأكيد خارج السيطرة

you'd lose control.

انت تفقد السيطرة

Maybe. If a person's behaviour or a situation

ربما. اذا كان سلوك شخص او موقف

gets out of hand,

خرج عن السيطرة

then you're no longer able to control it.

فأنت لم تعد قادر علي سيطرة الامور

Okay? You definitely don't want things to get out of hand

حسنا ، انت بالتأكيد لا تريد ان تفقد السيطرة
