I've been a documentary photographer for nearly 20 years now

I spent several years making work that examined the relationship

I wanted to make this work in a way that was slow and purposeful.

and explore more of what it could mean to lose a part of ourselves

But of course, the prostheses don't move on their own.

and opened up a world of opportunity for him.

It made me realize

that our emotions and understanding the limits of our physicality

အဆန်းတကြယ် ဖန်တီးပေးတဲ့ ပါမောက္ခ Ishiguro နဲ့ တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။

are also a huge part of what makes us strong.

In Osaka

စက်ရုပ် Geminoid ကို တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။

I meet professor Ishiguro,

ဒီအကွက်မှာ စက်ရုပ်ပုံ သုံးပုံကို မြင်နိုင်ပါတယ်၊

who makes robots with uncannily human faces and expressions.

တစ်ပုံက ပါမောက္ခပါ။

First, I meet Geminoid,

ဘယ်ဟာလဲ ဆိုတာ ခွဲပြောနိုင်လား။

the robot he created in his own likeness.

လတ်တလော ဖန်တီးမှုတွေထဲက တစ်ခုက Ibuki ပါ၊

On the grid here you can see three pictures of the robot,

Can you tell which is which?

One of his more recent creations is Ibuki,

အားနည်းချက်တစ်ခုကို မြင်မိတယ်။

a robot made to look like a ten-year-old boy,

who can wave and show a range of facial expressions.

In those expressions, I saw a certain vulnerability

သူ ပြုံးပြသောအခါ ပြန်ပြုံးပြချင်ခဲ့တယ်။

that made Ibuki feel very real to me.

တကယ့် ကလေးတစ်ယောက်လို ဖြစ်ခဲ့သလို Ibuki က ဆွဲဆောင်တယ်လို့ ခံစားရတယ်။

When he was angry or sad, it resonated.

အားလုံး အဆုံးမှာတော့

ကျေးဇူးတင်တာ(သို့)လက်ဆန့်ကာ သူ့လက်ကို ဆွဲချင်စိတ်ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

And when he smiled, I wanted to smile back.

I feel I was drawn to Ibuki as I might have been to a real child.

And at the end of it all,

ကျွန်မတို့ကို ပိုသန်မာလာအောင် ကူညီနိုင်ရင်

I felt I wanted to thank him or reach out and shake his hand.

So if understanding the limits of our physicality

can help to make us stronger,

then seeing the vulnerability in Ibuki's expressions

made him feel more human to me.

So where do we go from here?

ကျုံ့နိုင်တဲ့ ကြွက်သားတု ပုံဲစံတစ်ခု တီထွင်ခဲ့သူပါ။

In Tokyo, I meet professor Takeuchi

ဒီလိုဆိုတော့ ခြေလက်အင်္ဂါလေးက အပြန်ပြန်အလှန်လှန်လှုပ်ရှားတယ်၊

who's developed a form of synthetic muscle

အခု နမူနာက သေးသေးလေးပေမဲ့

that can respond to an electric pulse

ဒီကနေ ခြေလက်အင်္ဂါ အတုတွေ

and expand or contract just like a real muscle.

ဖန်းတီးနိုင်တဲ့ ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေတွေကို စိတ်ကူးကြည့်ပါ။

As it does so, the little limb here moves back and forth.

ဒါကိုခြေလက်မရှိသူရဲ့ ကိုယ်လက်အင်္ဂါ အဆုံးက အာရုံကြော

Now this sample is only tiny,

ခုန်တာ တွေကို ဖတ်တဲ့ နည်းပညာနဲ့ ပေါင်းစပ်လို့ရရင်ရော။

but imagine the possibilities

if synthetic limbs could be made out of this.

ဖြစ်လောက်တာက ခန္ဓာကိုယ်မှာ လုပ်သလိုပဲ အထိအတွေ့ကို တုံ့ပြန်ကာ ပူတာ

And what if that could be combined with the technology

(သို့( စူးတာ တစ်ခုခုကို ခံစားနိုင်ပြီး

that reads nerve pulses from the end of an amputee's limb?

ဦးနှောက်ဆီသို့ သတင်းပို့တာပါ။

Perhaps it could respond to touch and feel something hot or sharp,

ဒီအားနည်းချက်တွေကို နားလည်တာက နည်းပညာကိုပါ အားကောင်းလာစေမှာပါ။

sending a message back up to our brains,

ဒါကို ဖန်တီးတဲ့ လုပ်ငန်းစဥ်မှာ

just like it does in our body.

Understanding those vulnerabilities would make the technology stronger too.

ဆန်းပြားတဲ့ ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေတွေကို မြင်ခဲ့တယ်။

Throughout the course of making this work,

I've met some incredible people,

both using and creating technology.

I've seen crazy possibilities

for how we'll mend and enhance our bodies.

But I've also smiled at a robot,

seen a young girl leap through the air on a blade

လူ့ခန္ဓာကိုယ်ရဲ့ ရှုပ်ထွေးမှုကြောင့် ကျွန်မ အံ့သြသွားတယ်။

and shaken the hand of a man with no hands

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါက ခန္ဓာကိုယ်တင်မဟုတ်ဘူး လို့လည်း ခံစားရတယ်။

who towers emotionally above us all.

စက်ရုပ်အင်္ဂါဖြစ်ဖြစ်

ဘာဖြစ်ဖြစ် ဒါက ခံစားချက်တွေနဲ့

I'm left in awe of the complexity of the human body.

အားနည်းချက်တွေကို နားလည်တာကို ခွန်အားဖြစ်စေတယ်။

But I also feel that it's not just our bodies,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီလက်ရာတွေကို ပြန်လာပြီး ဂရုတစိုက်

bionics or not,

လေ့လာလို့ရတဲ့ လေ့လာမှုတွေအဖြစ်

that make us strong,

but our emotions and understanding our weaknesses.

တွေးကြည့်ချင်တယ်။

အချိန်က အားလုံးနဲ့အတူ မကုန်ဆုံးမီ

But I'd like to think of these works as studies,

ဆင့်ကဲဖြစ်စဉ်ထဲက ကာလတစ်ခုပေါ့။

something that we can come back to

ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။

and carefully observe.

A point in our evolution

before time runs away with us all.
