Imagine if you live at the center of a global conservation spotlight,

but you have no voice.

Sadly, this happens very often in local communities of key ecosystems

ဝမ်းနည်းစရာက ကမ္ဘာတစ်ဝှမ်းက အဓိက ဂေဟစနစ် တွေရဲ့ဒေသဆိုင်ရာ လူမှုအသိုင်းအဝိုင်းတွေမှာ

around the world.

In conservation, my field of work,

ကျွန်ုမရဲ့ လုပ်ငန်းနယ်ပယ်၊ ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးမှာ

I call it community-based conservation washing,

ကျွန်မကတော့ ဒါကို လူထုအခြေပြု ထိန်းသိမ်း ဆေးကြောခြင်းလို့ ခေါ်တယ်၊

which is basically when conservation organizations

အခြေခံအနေနဲ့ ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးအဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေက လူမှုရပ်ရွာတွေကို

claim to work for communities

ထည့်သွင်းတာအစား ကြိုတင်ရေးဆွဲထာတဲ့ ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးအစီအစဉ်တွေကို

only to inform and impose pre-designed conservation plans

သူတို့ကို အသိပေးဖို့၊ပြဋ္ဌာန်းဖို့အတွက်သာ

instead of including them,

လုပ်ဆောင်ဖို့ တောင်းဆိုတဲ့အခါပါ၊

misguiding media and funding sources.

လွဲချော်နေတဲ့ မီဒီယာနဲ့ရန်ပုံငွေ အရင်းအမြစ်တွေပါ။

Think of greenwashing, and then apply it to conservation.

စိမ်းလန်းတဲ့ ဆေးကြောခြင်းကို စဉ်းစားပြီး ဒါကို ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးမှာ အသုံးချပါ။

Hopefully we can all agree that approach is not right,

ဒီချဉ်းကပ်မှုက မမှန်တာကို အားလုံး သဘောတူနိုင်မယ်လို့ မျှော်လင့်ပြီး

and it needs to be tackled.

ဒါကို ကိုင်တွယ်ဖြေရှင်းဖို့ လိုတယ်။

And how about we start

ရှေးရိုး လူထုအခြေပြု

by twisting classic community-based conservation questions upside down?

ထိန်းသိမ်းစောင့်ရှောက်ရေး မေးခွန်းတွေကို ဇောက်ထိုးလှည့်ရင်း စတင်မယ်ဆိုရင်ရော။

Say, instead of wondering how to bring science

သိပ္ပံပညာနဲ့မူဝါဒကို လူမှုအသိုင်းအဝိုင်းဆီ ဆောင်ကြဉ်းနည်းကို

and policy to communities,

တွေးတောနေမယ်အစား

how about we find a way to bring the voice

သုတေသနနဲ့ မူဝါဒချမှတ်တာဆီ ရပ်ရွာလူထုရဲ့ အသံနဲ့ ရာစုနှစ် အသိပညာကို

and centenary knowledge of communities to research and policy making?

ယူဆောင်လာဖို့ နည်းလမ်းတစ်ခုကို ကျွန်ုမတို့ ရှာဖွေမယ်ဆိုရင်ရော။

But see, the answer to such questions is never a one-size-fits-all solution,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကြည့်ပါ၊ ဒီမေးခွန်းတွေအတွက် အဖြေက အားလုံးနဲ့ကိုက်ညီတဲ့ အဖြေမဟုတ်ဘူး။

because it needs to be tailored to the unique environmental,

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ ဒါက အသိုက်အဝန်းတစ်ခုစီရဲ့ ထူးခြားတဲ့ ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်၊ လူမှုရေးနဲ့

social and economic realities of each community.

Let me give you some context.

ဆက်စပ်အခြေအနေလေး ပေးပါရစေ။

I get to work in one of the most incredible wetland systems on Earth.

ကမ္ဘာပေါ်က မယုံနိုင်စရာ စိမ့်မြေ စနစ်တစ်ခုမှာ ကျွန်မ အလုပ်လုပ်ခွင့်ရတယ်။

The sources of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation area,

Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area ရင်းမြစ်တွေပါ၊

KAZA for short.

အတိုကောက်က KAZA ပါ။

But now KAZA spreads through five countries

အခုတော့ KAZA ဟာ နိုင်ငံ ငါးနိုင်ငံဆီ ပျံ့နှံ့သွားပြီး

and is home to iconic African wildlife,

Okavango မြစ်ဝကျွန်းပေါ်ဒေသလို အထင်ကရ

incredible landscapes, like the Okavango Delta,

and up to 2.5 million people.

Its sources in eastern Angola are the heart, the lungs

and the backbone of the entire KAZA,

yet they’re unprotected.

In one of the many research trips I've done to the area,

ကျွန်မ သွားဖူးတဲ့ သုတေသန ခရီးစဉ်များစွာထဲက တစ်ခုဖြစ်တဲ့

I met Mama Lerógio,

Luchaze ရွာရဲ့ အသက်အကြီးဆုံး

the oldest lady of a Luchaze village,

အမျိုးသမီး Mama Lerógio ကိုတွေ့ဆုံခဲ့ပြီး

and she was genuinely surprised to still see me alive.

သူက ကျွန်မ အသက်ရှင်နေလျက်ရှိသေးတာကို မြင်ရတာ တကယ် အံ့ဩခဲ့တယ်။

She told me the story of the Mukissi,

မြစ်တွေကို ကာကွယ်တော့ အသက်ကိုပါ ကာကွယ်တဲ့

this mythical, giant snake-like creature

ဒီဒဏ္ဍာရီလာ၊ ဧရာမ မြွေနဲ့တူတဲ့ Mukissi

that protects the rivers and thus life.

And she told me that if the Mukissi spared me, my life,

သူ ကျွန်မကို ပြောပြတာက Mukissi က ဘော့ဆွာနာက Okavango မြစ်ဝကျွန်းပေါ်ဒေသအထိ

after spending four months in dugout canoes

မြစ်ဖျားခံရာတွေကနေ လုံးထွင်း ကနူးလှေတွေထဲမှာ

from the sources to the Okavango delta in Botswana,

လေးလ ကုန်ဆုံးပြီး ကျွန်မ၊ ကျွန်မရဲ့ အသက်ကို ချမ်းသာပေးတယ်ဆိုရင်

it meant it trusted me.

ဒါက ကျွန်မကို ယုံကြည််ခဲ့တာ၊

And if it did, so could they, the Luchaze people.

အဲဒီလိုသာဖြစ်ရင် Luchaze လူမျိုးတွေလည်း ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်တဲ့။

But see, most Luchaze children do not know of the Mukissi

ဒါပေမဲ့ Luchaze ကလေးအများစုဟာ Mukissi သို့မဟုတ်

or any other local tale.

အခြားဒေသခံပုံပြင်တစ်ပုဒ်ကိုမှ မသိကြဘူး။

And that is because the 40-plus year-long war they have endured

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ သူတို့ ကြံ့ကြံ့ခံခဲ့ရတဲ့ နှစ် ၄၀ ကျော်ကြာ ရှည်ကြာ စစ်ပွဲက

has created a gap in storytelling

ပုံပြင်ပြောခြင်းမှာ ဟာကွက်တစ်ခုကို ဖန်တီးခဲ့ပြီး

and has stripped away ownership of their heritage.

သူတို့ရဲ့ အမွေအနှစ် ပိုင်ဆိုင်မှုကို ဖယ်ထုတ်လိုက်တာကြောင့်ပါ။

So now the ancient wisdom,

ဒါကြောင့် အခုအခါ စောင့်ရှောက်တာအတွက်

which is key to stewardship,

အဓိကသော့ချက်ဖြစ်တဲ့ ရှေးခေတ် ဥာဏ်ပညာက

is locked in the older, disappearing generations.

ပိုရှေးကျပြီး ပျောက်ကွယ်နေတဲ့ မျိုးဆက်တွေမှာပိတ်လှောင်နေတယ်။

And so we started this journey to bring back these stories

ဒါကြောင့် ဂုဏ်ယူမှုနဲ့ ပိုင်ဆိုင်မှုကို ပြန်လည်ဖော်ထုတ်ဖို့ ကြိုးပမ်းမှုအဖြစ်

as an effort to restore pride and ownership.

ဒီဇာတ်လမ်းတွေကို ပြန်လည်ယူ ဆောင်လာဖို့ ဒီခရီးကို စတင်ခဲ့တာပါ။

Oral storytelling has always played a fundamental role,

ပါးစပ် ပုံပြင်ပြောတာက အာဖရိကယဉ်ကျေးမှုမှာသာမက

not only in African culture but in conservation efforts, too.

We also do mapping exercises

ရွာသားတွေကို သူတို့ရဲ့ မြေယာအပေါ်မှာသာမက

to help villagers visualize the influence and impact not only of their land,

သူတို့ရဲ့ ပထဝီဆိုင်ရာ လက်လှမ်းမမီတဲ့ နေ့စဉ်လုပ်ဆောင်မှုတွေရဲ့ သြဇာလွှမ်းမှုနဲ့

but also of their daily actions beyond their geographic reach.

သက်ရောက်မှုတွေကို မြင်ယောင်အောင်ကူညီဖို့ မြေပုံဆွဲ လေ့ကျင့်မှုတွေကိုလည်းလုပ်ပေးတယ်။

To give them a sense of importance

စွန့်ပစ်ထားတဲ့ ဒီနှစ်တွေအားလုံးကို

to counteract how they felt abandoned all these years.

သူတို့ခံစားရပုံကို တန်ပြန်ဖို့ အရေးပါမှု သဘောကို သတိပြုမိစေဖို့ပါ။

And we also help give them back the power of decision

ဒါ့အပြင် သူတို့ကို စမ်းသပ်နိုင်တဲ့ အခြားအသက်မွေးဝမ်းကြောင်းဆိုင်ရာ

by instigating curiosity

စူးစမ်းလိုစိတ်ကို လှုံ့ဆော်ပေးရင်း

on alternative livelihoods that they can trial on.

သူတို့ရဲ့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက် အာဏာကို ပြန်ပေးဖို့လည်း ကူညီပေးတယ်။

All of this in an effort to bring back ownership of their heritage

ဒါတွေအားလုံးက သူတို့ရဲ့ အမွေအနှစ်ကို ပြန်လည်ပိုင်ဆိုင်လာစေဖို့နဲ့

and make them stewards of their own land

သူတို့ရဲ့ပိုင်မြေနဲ့ သူတို့ရဲ့ အနာဂတ်ရဲ့ ဘဏ္ဍာစိုးတွေ

and also of their own future.

ဖြစ်စေဖို့ ကြိုးပမ်းမှုတစ်ခုပါ။

But see, through the years,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မ ရှေ့မှာ ပြောခဲ့တဲ့

that trust that I've mentioned before, grew stronger.

ယုံကြည်မှုက နှစ်တွေကြာလာတာနဲ့အမျှ ပိုခိုင်မာလာတာကို ကြည့်ပါ။

So now they scold me, they teach, they feed, they protect me,

ဒါကြောင့် အခု သူတို့က ကျွန်မကို ဆူပူတယ်၊ သင်ပေးတယ်၊ ကျွေးမွေးတယ်၊ ကာကွယ်တယ်၊

they tell me secrets of their traditions.

သူတို့ရဲ့ ဓလေ့ထုံးတမ်း လျှို့ဝှက်ချက်တွေ ပြောပြတယ်။

Children tease me and call me names,

ကလေးတွေက ကျွန်မကို ကျီစားပြီး လှောင်ပြောင် စော်ကားပေမဲ့

but I will never be one of them.

ကျွန်မက ဘယ်တော့သူတို့ထဲက တစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်မှာမဟုတ်ဘူး။

And thus they will never fully, truly trust me.

ဒါကြောင့် သူတို့က ဘယ်တော့မှ ကျွန်မကို အပြည့်အဝ၊ အစစ်အမှန် ယုံမှာမဟုတ်ဘူး။

But that is the point of this whole talk.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါက ဒီဟောပြောချက်တစ်ခုလုံးရဲ့ အဓိကအချက်ပါ။

They're not supposed to trust me, you

ကမ္ဘာကြီးကို ကယ်တင်ဖို့ ကြီးကျယ်ခမ်းနားတဲ့ အစီအစဥ်တစ်ခုနဲ့

or anyone else coming in with a grand plan to save the world.

ဝင်လာတဲ့သူတွေ၊ ကျွန်မ၊သင် ဒါမှမဟုတ် တခြား ဘယ်သူ့ကိုမှ သူတို့ မယုံကြည်မသင့်ဘူး။

They're supposed to trust themselves.

သူတို့ကိုယ်သူတို့ပဲ ယုံကြည်သင့်တာပါ။

Real community-based conservation

စစ်မှန်တဲ့ ရပ်ရွာအခြေပြု ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးက

goes much beyond ensuring an elder has a ceremonial seat at the table

အကြီးအကဲက စားပွဲက ပုံစံကျတဲ့ထိုင်ခုံမှာ ထိုင်ပြီး လူတွေ့စစ်ဆေးတာကို သေချာစေတာထက်

and is interviewed.

အများကြီးပိုသာပါတယ်။

It fosters fierce independence, doesn't further dependency.

ဒါက ပြင်းထန်တဲ့ လွတ်လပ်မှုကို အားပေး မြှင့်တင်တယ်၊ နောက်ထပ် မှီခိုမှုမဟုတ်ဘူး။

Lasting conservation comes from within.

အဓွန့်ရှည်တဲ့ ထိန်းသိမ်းစောင့်ရှောက်မှုက အတွင်းကနေ လာတာပါ။

From believing, from belonging, from dreaming.

ယုံကြည်ခြင်း၊ ပိုင်ဆိုင်ခြင်း၊ အိပ်မက်မက်ခြင်းကနေပါ။

So whether you are a conservationist yourself

ဒါကြောင့် သင်ကိုယ်တိုင်က ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးသမားပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်

or a donor or a media outlet,

အလှူရှင် (သို့) မီဒီယာခွဲပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊

or maybe just plain curious,

ရိုးရိုးရှင်းရှင်း သိချင်နေတာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊

let's be vessels for that,

ဒါအတွက်၊ ကြီးကြပ်အုပ်ချုပ်မှုအတွက်၊

for stewardship, for ownership,

ပိုင်ဆိုင်မှုအတွက်၊ဂုဏ်အတွက်

for pride.

ယာဥ်တွေပဲဖြစ်ကြရအောင်။

Don’t just tick the boxes.

အကွက်တွေကို မခြစ်ပါနဲ့။

Ask the difficult questions.

ခက်ခဲတဲ့ မေးခွန်းတွေေကို မေးပါ။

And always wonder:

ပြီးတော့ အမြဲတမ်း အံ့သြစရာက

Are we working for communities

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ရပ်ရွာတွေအတွက် သို့မဟုတ် ရပ်ရွာတွေနဲ့အတူ

or with communities?
