I myself am from that part of the world

often euphemistically referred to as either "the Global South"

or "the developing world."

But let's be blunt about it:

하지만 솔직히 말하면,

when we say those words, what we really mean is the poor world --

실제로는 가난한 나라들을 가리키죠.

those corners of the world with ready-made containers

타국에서 타인이 만든 독창적이지 않은 아이디어를 실현하기 위한

for the hand-me-down ideas of other places and other people.

이미 만들어진 상품들을 사용하는 세계의 일부 국가들이죠.

But I'm here to depart a little bit from the script

and to try and convince you

여러분들에게 확신을 주려고 합니다.

that these places are actually alive and bubbling with ideas.

My real issue is: Where do I even start?

So maybe Egypt, Alexandria,

where we meet Rizwan.

When he walks outside his souk,

that can prevent the blood in his arteries from clotting,

he confronts the fact that,

despite a growing epidemic

that this medicine is not one of the 12 percent of all medicines in Egypt

that are counterfeits.

From the gorgeous banks of the Nile,

we glide into the beautiful Rift Valley of Kenya.

In Narok Town, we meet Ole Lenku, salt-of-the-earth fellow.

나록 타운에서 세상의 소금같은 분인 올레 렌쿠를 만났습니다.

When he walks into an agrodealer's shop,

그가 농업업자에게 기대하는 것이 있다면

all he wants is certified and proper cabbage seeds

인증을 받은 적합한 배추 종자를 사는 것 정도입니다.

that, if he were to plant them,

will yield a harvest rich enough

that he can pay for the school fees of his children.

That's all he wants.

Unfortunately,

by the reckoning of most international organizations,

40 percent of all the seeds sold in Eastern and Southern Africa

From Kenya, we head to Noida in India,

is holding on very fast to her dream of becoming an elite athlete,

safe in the knowledge that

because of our ingredients rating technology,

she's not going to ingest something accidentally,

which will mess up her doping tests

and kick her out of the sports she loves.

Finally, we alight in Ghana,

마침내 우리는 가나에 도착했습니다.

my own home country,

가나는 저의 고향입니다.

where another problem needs addressing --

또 다른 문제가 해결을 기다리고 있는 곳 이었죠.

the problem of under-vaccination or poor-quality vaccination.

바로 낮은 백신 접종률과 불량 백신 접종입니다.

You see, when you put some vaccines into the bloodstream of an infant,

백신 주사를 유아의 혈관에 접종하면,

you are giving them a lifetime insurance

against dangerous diseases that can cripple them or kill them.

Sometimes, this is for a lifetime.

The problem is that vaccines are delicate organisms really,

and they need to be stored between two degrees and eight degrees.

And if you don't do that, they lose their potency,

and they no longer confer the immunity

the child deserves.

Working with computer vision scientists,

These are some of the solutions at work saving lives, redeeming societies,

in these parts of the world.

바로 개발도상국에서요.

But I would remind you

하지만 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 점은

that there are powerful ideas behind them,

강력한 아이디어가 있어 해결책이 나올 수 있었다는 겁니다.

and I'll recap a few.

몇 가지만 말씀드릴게요.

One, that social trust is not the same as interpersonal trust.

첫째, 사회적 신뢰는 대인관계 신뢰와 같지 않습니다.

Two, that the division between consumption and regulation

둘째, 소비와 규제를 구분짓는 것은

in an increasingly interdependent world

점점 상호의존적으로 변모하는 현 세상에서 더 이상 가능하지 않습니다.

is no longer viable.

And three, that decentralized autonomy,

셋째, 분권형 자치는

regardless of what our blockchain enthusiasts in the West --

서구의 블록체인 지지자들의 견해와는 다를지라도

whom I respect a lot -- say,

are not as important as reinforcing social accountability feedback loops.

사회적 책무에 관한 피드백 순환을 강화시키는 것만큼 중요하지 않습니다.

These are some of the ideas.

Now, every time I go somewhere and I give this speech

매번 어딘가에 가서 강연을 하고,

and I make these comments and I provide these examples,

people say, "If these ideas are so damn brilliant,

I want to assure you,

the reason why you have not heard of these ideas

is exactly the point I made in the beginning.

강연 초반에 말씀드렸던 것과 상 관이 있습니다.

And that is that there are parts of the world

이 세계의 특정 지역에서 나온 아이디어는

whose good ideas simply don't scale

좋은 아이디어라도 잘 확산되지 않습니다.

because of the latitude on which they were born.

그 아이디어가 탄생한 위도가 어디인지가 영향을 줍니다.

I call that "mental latitude imperialism."

저는 이를 "정신적 위도 제국주의" 라고 불러요.

That really is the reason.

이유가 바로 거기에 있죠.

But you may counter and say, "Well, maybe it's an important problem,

but it's sort of an obscure problem in parts of the world.

Why do you want to globalize such problems?

What if, in response, I told you

that actually, underlying each of these problems that I've described

is a fundamental issue of the breakdown of trust

in markets and institutions,

and that there's nothing more global, more universal, closer to you and I

than the problem of trust.

For example, a quarter of all the seafood marketed in the US is falsely labeled.

예를 들면, 미국 시장에 유통되는 해산물 1/4은 가짜 라벨을 사용합니다.

So when you buy a tuna or salmon sandwich in Manhattan,

맨하튼에서 참치나 연어 샌드위치를 샀다면

you are eating something that could be banned for being toxic in Japan.

Literally.

말 그대로예요.

Most of you have heard of a time when horsemeat was masquerading as beef

유럽에서 소고기 대신 말고기를 사용한 햄버거 패티 파동을 기억하실 겁니다.

in burger patties in Europe?

You have.

들어보셨죠.

What you don't know is that a good chunk of these fake meat patties

하지만 가짜 고기 패티 중 일부분은

were also contaminated with cadmium, which can damage your kidneys.

카드뮴에 오염되어 있고, 신장을 손상시킬 수 있음은 모르실 겁니다.

This was Europe.

유럽에서 있었던 일이죠.

Many of you are aware of plane crashes and you worry about plane crashes,

여러분은 항공기 추락사고를 알고 또 걱정을 하실 겁니다.

because every now and then, one of them intrudes into your consciousness.

잊을만 하면 항공기 사고가 들리기 때문이죠.

But I bet you don't know

하지만 이 사실은 모르실 겁니다.

that a single investigation uncovered one million counterfeit incidents

단 한 차례의 조사를 통해

발견된 미국 항공 부품 공급 체인의 위조품 사례는 100만 건으로 드러났죠.

in the aeronautical supply chain in the US.

So this is a global problem, full stop.

이런 게 정말로 전지구적인 문제입니다.

It's a global problem.

전지구적인 문제입니다.

The only reason we are not addressing it with the urgency it deserves

우리가 이러한 문제를 긴급하게 다루지 않는 이유는

is that the best solutions,

최선의 해결책,

the most advanced solutions, the most progressive solutions,

가장 진보적이고 혁신적인 해결책이 있더라도

are, unfortunately, in parts of the world where solutions don't scale.

그저 소규모에 머무르는 그런 지역에 존재하기 때문입니다.

And that is why it is not surprising

그렇기 때문에

that attempts to create this same verification models for pharmaceuticals

나이지리아에서는 이미 상용 중인 제약 회사 인증 절차 모델을

are now a decade behind in the USA and Europe,

미국과 유럽에서 만들려고 하는 시도가

while it's already available in Nigeria.

10년이나 뒤쳐져 있는 상황이 놀랍지도 않죠.

A decade, and costing a hundred times more.

10년이라는 시간뿐 아니라, 비용은 백배나 더 듭니다.

And that is why, when you walk into a Walgreens in New York,

뉴욕의 월그린 약국에서는

you cannot check the source of your medicine,

약품의 성분을 확인할 수 없지만,

but you can in Maiduguri in Northern Nigeria.

북 나이지리아 마이두구리에서는 가능한 이유입니다.

That is the reality.

이게 현실입니다.

So we go back to the issue of ideas.

아이디어라는 주제로 다시 돌아가 볼까요.

Remember, solutions are merely packaged ideas,

so it is the ideas that are most important.

가장 중요한 건 바로 아이디어입니다.

In a world where we marginalize the ideas of the Global South,

글로벌 사우스의 아이디어를 소외시키는 세상에서는

we cannot create globally inclusive problem-solving models.

전지구적이며 포괄적인 문제 해결 모델을 창조할 수 없습니다.

Now, you might say, "Well, that's bad,

여러분들은 말씀하실지도 모르죠. "뭐, 안타깝긴 하지만,

but in such a world where we have so many other problems,

그거 말고도 다른 문제가 많은 세상에서

do we need another cause?"

또 다른 명분이 필요할까요?"

I say yes, we need another cause.

Actually, that cause will surprise you: the cause of intellectual justice.

사실, 여러분들은 놀랄지도 모릅니다. 그건 지적 정의의 문제거든요.

You say, "What? Intellectual justice? In a world of human rights abuses?"

"뭐? 지적 정의라구요? 인권 남용이 일어나는 세상에서요?"

And I explain this way:

all the solutions to the other problems that affect us and confront us

모두가 직면하고 있는 문제들, 모두에게 영향을 주는 문제를 해결하려면

need solutions.

해결책이 필요합니다.

So you need the best ideas to address them.

문제를 해결하려면 최고의 아이디어가 필요합니다.

And that is why today I ask you,

바로 제가 이런 질문을 하는 이유입니다.

can we all give it one time for intellectual justice?
