Online predators spread fake porn of me. Here's how I fought back | Noelle Martin

But what started off as momentary curiosity

very quickly turned

into an almost five-year horrific battle

that almost ruined my life.

I Google Images reverse-searched myself:

저는 제 사진으로 구글 이미지 역검색을 해봤어요.

a function of Google that allows you to upload an image

구글에 이미지를 업로드하면

and it shows you where it is on the internet.

어디에 그 이미지가 있는지를 보여주는 기능이죠.

This is me at 17 years old.

제가 17살 때 모습입니다.

An innocent selfie I took before a party.

파티 시작 전에 찍은 셀카였어요.

Now, before I continue, I must point out

이야기를 더 하기 전에, 이걸 꼭 말씀드려야 합니다.

that what I'm about to talk about is very confronting and graphic.

제가 지금 이야기하려고 하는 것은 매우 불편하고 적나라합니다.

But there's no way out.

This is a very confronting issue.

In a split second,

my screen was flooded with that image

and dozens more images of me

제 SNS 계정에서 무단으로 가져간

that had been stolen from my social media,

on links connected to porn sites.

포르노 사이트와 연결되어 있었습니다.

On these sites, nameless, faceless sexual predators

그런 사이트에는, 익명으로 얼굴을 가린채 성범죄자들이

had published highly explicit sexual commentary about me

저에 대해서 그리고 저를 대상으로 하고 싶은 행위에 대한

and what they'd like to do to me.

선정적이고 성적인 코멘트를 늘어놓고 있었습니다.

"Cover her face and we'd fuck her body,"

"얼굴만 가리면 재미 좀 보고 싶네."

one person wrote.

라고 쓴 사람도 있었어요.

They also published identifying information about me:

그들은 저의 개인 정보도 공개했어요.

where I lived, what I studied, who I was.

제가 사는 곳, 전공한 것, 누군지요.

But things got worse.

하지만 상황은 더 심각해졌어요.

I soon discovered that these sexual predators

제가 곧 알게 된 것은 이 성범죄자들이

had doctored or photoshopped my face

제 사진에서 얼굴을 포토샵을 해서

onto the bodies of naked adult actresses engaged in sexual intercourse,

on solo shots

제 사진을 놓고

of me being ejaculated on by two men.

두 명의 남성이 제게 사정하고 있는 장면으로 합성했습니다.

Sperm was edited onto my face.

I was edited onto the cover of a porn DVD.

포르노 DVD 표지에 제 사진을 넣기도 했더군요.

Perpetrators had edited my images

그 범죄자들은 제 이미지를 편집해서

to give the effect that my blouse was transparent or see-through,

제가 투명하거나 시스루인 블라우스를 입고 있어

so you could see my nipples.

젖꼭지가 보이게 만들기도 했죠.

Perpetrators ejaculated on images of me,

그들은 제 사진 위에 사정을 하였고,

took photos of their sperm and penises on these images

제 사진에 묻은 정액과 성기를 사진으로 찍어서

and posted them onto porn sites.

야동 사이트에 올렸습니다.

"Cum on printed pigs," is what they call it.

"헤픈 여자 위에 하기"라고 그들은 부르더군요.

Now, you might be wondering,

이쯤되면 여러분들은 궁금하실 겁니다.

what sorts of images I posted on social media.

제가 대체 어떤 사진을 SNS 올렸길래 그런지 말이죠.

This is me, at around 19 at the Claremont Hotel,

19살 때의 제 모습인데,

just a few suburbs away.

시내 외곽의 클레어 몬트 호텔에서 찍은 겁니다.

And they superimposed that face into this.

그 사진에 있던 제 얼굴을 이런 사진에 갖다 붙인 겁니다.

And things got worse.

이것보다 더 최악인 것도 있어요.

Nothing was off limits for these predators.

이 성범죄자들은 거침이 없었죠.

They even posted an image with my little sister on these sites too.

제가 여동생과 찍은 사진도 포르노 사이트에 올리기까지 했거든요.

Now, you might be thinking,

지금쯤 여러분들은 생각하시겠죠.

"Well, you do dress provocatively,

"도발적인 의상을 입었으니까,

even a little sexually suggestive,

아마도 성적으로 어필하고 관심받고 싶어한다고

attention seeking maybe."

비춰진 것이 아닐까."

But just because a woman's body gets attention,

하지만 단지 여성의 신체가 관심을 좀 받는다고 해서,

doesn't mean she's attention-seeking.

정말 관심받길 원하는 건 아니죠.

And what is provocative anyway, what is sexually suggestive?

대체 무엇이 도발적인 것이며, 뭐가 성적인 암시를 보내는 건가요?

In some parts of the world, showing your ankles

전세계 일부 국가에서는 발목을 내놓고 다니는 것 조차

is promiscuous, is provocative.

문란하고 도발적이라 여겨집니다.

It's just like, no matter what a woman wears,

마치 그건 여성이 무엇을 입든지,

it's always perceived as more sexual than it is.

언제나 실제보다 더 성적으로 받아들여지고 있는 것이죠.

For me, I just wanted to feel pretty and confident.

저는 그저 이쁘게 입고 싶었고, 당당해지고 싶었습니다.

What's so wrong with that?

그게 잘못된 것인가요?

Now, you might be thinking,

여러분들은 또 생각하시겠죠.

"Well, can't you just set your social media on private?"

"SNS를 전체공개 하지말고 사생활 보호 설정을 하는 게 어떨까?"

Well, these perpetrators were calculated.

성범죄자들은 매우 계획적이었습니다.

They befriended my friends on social media

그들은 SNS에서 가짜 프로필을 만들어 제 친구들과 친구를 맺었고,

under fake profiles,

they followed the public galleries

제가 자주 방문하는 행사나 장소의 공개 갤러리를 팔로우하기도 하더군요.

of the events and places I regularly visited.

But why?

그런데 왜 그런 거죠?

Why should one have to retreat and hide

왜 제가 이런 일이 일어날 거라는 불안감으로부터

out of fear that something like this could happen?

도망가고 숨어야 하는 걸까요?

What I post and what I wear

제가 SNS에 올리고, 제가 입는 옷은

isn't an invitation to violate and abuse me.

제게 성적 폭력과 학대를 행하라는 초대장이 아닙니다.

The only person that should be changing their behavior

행동 수정이 필요한 사람은 그 누구도 아닌 바로

is the perpetrators.

성범죄자들입니다.

Now, you might be thinking, why me?

여러분들은 어째서 저인지 생각하시겠죠.

Well, I'm just one

저는 수천 수만 명 중의

of the thousands upon thousands

of ordinary women who are being preyed upon

평범한 여성으로 착취의 대상이 되고

in these mass-scale, horrific online cultures, websites and threads

만연하고 있는 끔찍한 온라인 문화, 웹사이트와 포스팅에서

that are dedicated to sexually exploiting and doctoring

평범한 여성들의 사진을 포르노로 착취하고 조작하고 있는데

ordinary images of women into porn.

그 중 한 명인 겁니다.

As I speak,

there are women who are being preyed upon, and they don't even know it.

In the beginning, I tried seeking help.

처음에는 도움을 찾아다녔습니다.

I went to police, I contacted government agencies,

경찰도 찾아가봤고, 정부 기관에서 연락을 해봤습니다.

I even tried to hire a private investigator,

사설 탐정을 고용하려고까지 생각해보았지만,

but they were too expensive.

비용이 만만치 않았습니다.

There was nothing that they could do.

그리고 그들이 해줄 수 있는 것도 없었죠.

I mean, what could you do

제말은, 뭘 할 수 있겠어요?

when the sites are hosted overseas and the perpetrators are from overseas?

웹사이트는 해외에서 등록된 것이고 성범죄자들도 해외에 있으니 말이에요.

I was told I had to contact the sites one by one,

저는 그 웹사이트에 하나하나 다 따로 연락을 하라고 조언을 받았죠.

notifying the webmasters to get everything deleted.

관리자에게 삭제를 해달라고 요청하라고요.

And so as you can imagine,

아마 여러분이 상상하시는대로,

in complete and utter fear and pain,

극도의 불안과 엄청난 고통 속에서

I did.

그렇게 했습니다.

I contacted the webmasters,

저는 사이트 관리자들에게 연락을 해서,

requesting that they delete the material shared without consent.

제 동의없이 무단전재된 것들을 모두 삭제해달라고 요청했습니다.

And I had some successes,

그리고 몇몇 성공 사례가 있었죠.

but I also had some major setbacks.

하지만 완전히 실패하기도 했습니다.

The more I fought,

the more sites I would discover,

and with time, the more my images were being seen and shared

in the tens of thousands.

I had one webmaster respond to me saying he'll only delete the site

if I sent him nude photos of myself within 24 hours.

사이트를 삭제해 주겠다고 했습니다.

And this went on for years,

사기치는 더러운 사이트들과 싸운지 이미 몇년이 지났습니다.

fighting against these dodgy, disgusting sites.

But I was fighting a losing battle.

하지만 저는 지는 싸움을 하고 있었죠.

And I couldn't continue this any longer for my own mental health.

제 정신건강을 위해서 더이상 이것을 계속 할 수 없었습니다.

But what could I do?

제가 뭘 할 수 있었을까요?

Maybe, I thought, if I spoke out,

아마, 제 생각에는, 공개적으로 이에 대한 발언을 했다면

I could reclaim my name,

제 자아를 다시 되찾고,

and I could rewrite my narrative on my own terms.

저의 언어로 저의 이야기를 다시 써나갈 수 있었을 것 같아요.

Maybe if I spoke out,

아마 제가 공개적으로 이 사건을 드러냈다면

I could raise awareness about this.

이에 대한 의식을 고양할 수도 있었겠죠.

Maybe I could even try to change the law.

아마 법을 바꾸려고 노력을 해볼 수도 있었겠죠.

And so I did.

저는 그렇게 했습니다.

I spoke out publicly late last year

작년 말쯤 저는 공개적으로 이 모든 사건을 밝혔습니다.

and news of my story reverberated around the world.

제 이야기에 대한 뉴스는 전세계적인 반향을 일으켰습니다.

But this was the response.

하지만 되돌아 온 반응은 이랬습니다.

"She's a fat, ugly slut, she's a whore."

"She's an attention-seeking piece of trash."

"Feel flattered, baby, it's a compliment."

"자랑스럽게 생각해. 이게 다 칭찬이야."

I was victim-blamed and slut-shamed

피해자인 저를 비난했고 난잡하다고 비난받았습니다.

and told I was deserving of what happened to me.

그래서 제게 일어난 일이 마땅한 일이라고도 했습니다.

And quite frankly,

정말 솔직하게 말하면,

that was more difficult for me to endure

이게 더 견디기가 힘들었습니다.

than my actual experiences of image-based abuse.

이미지로 학대 당했던 실제로 있었던 경험보다더 훨씬 더요.

But I couldn’t let this criticism defeat me.

하지만 그런 비난때문에 패배할 순 없었습니다.

I knew what the perpetrators had done was wrong,

and I knew what they were doing to others was wrong.

그들이 타인에게 행하고 있는 것은 잘못된 것임을 알고 있었죠.

And so I petitioned.

저는 탄원서를 제출했습니다.

I sent out impassioned pleas for support.

도와달라고 간절한 요청을 하였음에도,

But it didn't work.

소용이 없었습니다.

I think I got like 330 signatures.

겨우 330명 정도의 서명을 받았을 뿐입니다.

And that was really disheartening.

정말 낙담할 수 밖에 없었습니다.

But I then contacted my state and federal MPs.

And I was referred to the New South Wales Attorney General's department,

who were already in the process of drafting new laws

Some of you might know it as revenge porn.

And soon I became a spokesperson,

a public face for the new laws.

But I must point out,

여기서 짚고 넘어갈 건,

I do not in any way, shape or form

제가 어떤 형태로든 이 법안 변경에 대한

want to take credit for this change in the law.

공로를 인정받으려는 건 아니라는 겁니다.

This is on the backs of cybersafety experts,

이 법안은 사이버 보안 전문가, 연구자, 법무상과

of researchers, of the Attorney General's department,

수년 동안 이를 위해 싸워온 많은 사람들이 이룬 업적입니다.

of so many people who have fought for years.

New South Wales was the first state in all the world

뉴 사우스 웨일즈는 전세계에서 처음으로

to specifically include a provision on altering images.

이미지를 조작하는 것에 대한 구체적인 법 조항을 포함하였습니다.

Something that happened to me,

바로 제게 일어났던 일이죠.

something you certainly don't hear about very often.

아마 자주 듣지는 못하시는 그런 일이겠지만요.

And now ACT has also criminalized this,

also with a provision on altered images.

이런 행위는 불법화 되었습니다.

And next year, WA is introducing legislation

내년에는 웨스턴 오스트레일리아주에서도 이 법안을 도입한다고 합니다.

and hopefully, they introduce a provision on altered images

희망하건대, 그들도 이미지 조작에 관한 조항을 포함하길 바랍니다.

and I urge every state and every country in this world to follow suit,

because right now,

there's no justice for people like me.

Despite it all,
