Humankind loves to build walls.

Have you ever noticed that?

We build walls for everything:

for shelter, for protection, for privacy.

Over the past 70 years,

the number of barriers between countries has doubled.

Right now, there are more walls than at the end of the Second World War,

Growing up in Germany,

the fall of the Berlin Wall always felt to me

like the introduction of a new world, a world without barriers.

But since the attacks of 9/11,

the construction has experienced an extreme rise.

Since then, the amount has doubled,

with about 30 new structures that were planned or built.

Walls and fences are often built with the intention of security,

security from another group of people,

from crime, from illegal trades.

But walls and fences only provide us with a feeling of security,

which is different from real security.

Even though they might make us feel safe,

the structures themselves can't protect us.

Instead, they do something else:

they separate.

They create an us and a them.

They establish an enemy.

Walls make us build a second wall in our head, a mental wall.

And those mental walls slowly make us lose sight

이러한 마음의 벽들은 우리와 공통점을 가진

of all the things we have in common with the people on the other side.

The other way around,

mental walls can grow so strong that they encourage us to build,

keep or strengthen physical walls.

Physical and mental walls are closely interlinked,

물리적 장벽과 마음의 벽은 밀접하게 연결되어 있고,

and one almost always comes with the other.

It's a constant cycle:

physical walls empower mental walls, and mental walls empower physical walls

until at one point one part falls away,

and the cycle is disrupted.

When the Berlin Wall was being built,

베를린 장벽이 지어졌을 때

it was hard to tell who the wall was facing,

벽을 맞대고 있는 사람이 누군지 말하기가 어려웠죠.

because the people living around it identified as one.

왜냐하면 그 주위에 사는 사람들의 정체성은 하나였으니까요.

There was no us and them.

우리와 그들은 없었습니다.

There was no others.

다른 사람들도 없었고요.

During the time of separation,

both sides developed differently and formed individual identities.

All of a sudden, there was an us and a them.

A mental wall was built,

마음의 벽이 세워졌고,

and when the Berlin Wall fell again in 1989,

this mental wall in the head of the people stayed.

Eastern Germans had to be reintegrated into their own country,

동독은 자신들의 나라로 완전히 통합되었고,

and even though they didn't have to move places,

장소조차 움직일 필요가 없었지만

many still today feel like they have never fully arrived.

Those remaining effects of the mental wall are also measurable.

A study from the Freie University of Berlin in 2005

shows that even 15 years after the reunification,

Germans still believed that cities on the other side of the former wall

are further away than they really are.

The interesting thing is that they found a link between political attitude

and estimation of the distance.

The more a participant was against the German reunification,

the further away they estimated cities to be.

It's the mental wall which keeps cities on the other side far away,

마음의 벽이 다른 쪽이랑 멀리 떨어트린다면,

and the higher and stronger this mental wall,

그리고 그 벽이 점점 더 높아지고 강해진다면

the more difficult they seem to be reached.

거기에 닿기가 훨씬 더 어렵겠죠.

I tried to repeat this study

전 이 연구를 벽이 없이 자란

with a group of young Germans who grew up without the wall

어린 독일 세대들과 다시 진행했습니다.

to see if these effects are still measurable nowadays.

오늘날에도 이 영향이 여전히 유효한지 보려고요.

And the results show that this generation,

my generation,

제 세대는

is just kind of bad at geography in general --

그냥 지리적으로 안 좋을 뿐이었어요.

East and West.

But in our defense, this could be seen as an improvement, right?

We never experienced the actual wall.

This physical barrier was never able to make us build a mental wall

물리적인 장벽은 처음에는

in the first place.

I would love to take this as a serious indication

전 독일을 둘로 나누는 마음의 장벽을 없애지 않으면

that there could be a future without a mental wall dividing Germany,

독일에 미래는 없다고 생각하고 심각하게 받아들였죠.

but I think we have to face reality:

하지만 현실을 마주해야 해요.

this one wall could be disappearing,

벽 하나는 사라질 수 있겠죠.

but in the meanwhile, a billion others are constructed.

하지만 반면에, 엄청난 벽이 생길 거예요.

One global trend we are currently experiencing

세계적인 흐름 중 하나가

is the rise of gated communities.

공동체에 문을 만드는 거잖아요.

And in a way, gated communities can be seen the same exact way as countries,

그런 식으로 공동체에 문이 생기는 것처럼 나라도 똑같아요.

just on the small scale --

규모가 더 작을 뿐이죠.

neighborhoods surrounded by walls and fences

벽과 울타리로 둘러싸인 이웃들은

to protect citizens from other citizens --

자신들을 다른 시민들로부터 지키죠.

and the only difference is, it's by choice.

유일한 차이점은 바로, 선택했다는 점입니다.

But the physical and mental effects on the people living inside

하지만 안에 사는 사람들과

and the people kept outside

바깥에 사는 사람들이 느끼는 물리적 심리적 효과는

are the same,

같습니다.

separating cities, neighborhoods

분리된 도시, 이웃들

and even playgrounds.

심지어 운동장까지.

In the spring of last year, I worked on a design project in Brussels

지난 봄에 전 브루쉘에서 디자인 프로젝트를 진행했어요.

at two elementary schools where this was the case.

바로 이런 케이스가 적용된 두 학교에서요.

Both the schools share an entrance and the schoolyard.

두 학교 다 입구가 똑같고 운동장을 공유했습니다.

Both schools teach in Dutch.

두 학교 다 네덜란드어를 가르쳤고요.

But one school is mainly visited by Belgian children,

하지만 한 학교에는 벨기에 학생들이 주로 다녔고

and the other school, by immigrant children.

다른 학교는 이민자 학생들이 주로 다녔죠.

The schools are separated by walls and fences,

학교는 벽과 울타리로 분리되어 있어서

leaving the children no point of interaction

아이들끼리의 상호작용 보다

other than this fence on the schoolyard that separates them.

운동장의 울타리가 아이들을 분리시키는 것이 더 강했죠.

When I started to work there,

제가 여기에서 일했을 때,

it made me sad to see children having to stand at a fence

슬펐던 건 아이들이 울타리에 서서

to talk to their friend on the other side.

다른 쪽에 있는 친구들과 대화를 해야 했던 모습이었습니다.

But what's even worse is that most of the children

하지만 더 심각한 것은 대부분의 아이들에게는

will never get the opportunity to even make a friend on the other side.

울타리 너머 반대편에 있는 친구를 사귈 기회조차 없다는 것이죠.

School should be the place where children, all children,

학교는 아이들이, 모든 아이들이

come together and learn --

다 같이 모여서 배우는 장소여야 하죠.

learn from the teacher, but more importantly,

선생님으로부터 배우고. 하지만 무엇보다 중요한 건

learn from each other.

서로에게서 배우는 겁니다.

And the more diversity, the more there is to learn.

다양해질수록 배울 기회는 더 많겠죠.

In fact, school might be the only time in our lives

사실 학교는 저희가 살면서 유일하게

where establishing a contact despite social differences is even possible.

사회적으로 다른 사람들을 경험할 수 있는 곳이죠.

Separating children during this time of their development

이런 시기의 아이들을 분리시키면

will make integration extremely difficult,

통합은 매우 어려워질 것이며

if not impossible.

불가능해질지도 모르죠.

And yet, somehow,

그렇지만 어쩌면,

I seem to be the only one having a problem with this fence in Brussels.

브뤼셀의 울타리에 문제가 있는 걸 본 사람은 저 뿐일지도요.

Most of the parents, teachers and children

대부분의 학부모, 선생님, 아이들은

stopped seeing or at least questioning the structure.

더 이상 보지 않거나 아니면 최소한의 질문만 하니까요.

It's just how it is.

그냥 그런 겁니다.

Nobody has ever seen it differently.

아무도 달라진 점을 보지 못해요.

And people are in favor of it.

그리고 사람들은 그걸 좋아하죠.

I once asked a boy if he would like to play with the other side,

한 번은 제가 한 소년에게 다른 쪽에 있는 아이들과 놀고 싶은지

and he said, "No."

물었더니 "아뇨"라고 대답하더군요.

Then I asked if he would play with them if the fence wasn't there,

그래서 제가 울타리가 저기 없으면 놀거냐고 다시 물었더니

and he said, "Probably."

"아마도요" 라고 대답했어요.

But then he quickly added that the fence should stay,

하지만 곧바로 덧붙이길, 울타리는 반드시 있어야 한다고

because the other side is mean and they never give back his ball.

다른 쪽이라는 의미는 자기 공을 절대 안 돌려준다는 의미니까요.

It's funny, because I talked to children from both sides,

흥미로웠죠. 왜냐하면 제가 양쪽 아이들에게

and everyone told me that the other side is mean

물었을 때 전부 다 다른 쪽이란 의미는

because they never give back the ball.

공을 못 돌려받는다는 의미라고 대답했으니까요.

The children on both sides dislike each other,

양쪽 아이들은 서로를 싫어했어요.

and there are regularly arguments breaking out at this fence,

그리고 이 울타리를 없애야 하는지 항상 토론했죠.

which is also the main reason why people feel the need

이건 또 사람들이 왜 울타리가 거기 있어야만 하는지를

for it to be there:

느끼는 중요한 이유기도 하고요.

it protects the children from each other,

서로에게서 보호하기 위해서죠.

or at least their toys,

최소한 그들의 장난감이라도

and it prevents chaos.

혼란을 방지하기 위해서요.

At some point, the children started to crawl beneath the fence

어쩔 땐 아이들이 울타리 아래로 기어들어가서

to get their ball back,

공을 도로 가져오기도 하는데,

and the reaction of the schools was to put these metal plates there.

그러면 학교에서는 이러한 철제 방어막을 세워놓죠.

Now they climb over.

그럼 이제 타고 올라가는 거죠.

I don't know what came first in Brussels:

저도 브루쉘에 뭐가 먼저인지는 모릅니다.

a mental wall that grew too strong that it made them build a physical fence,

심리적 벽이 너무 강해서 물리적 벽까지 만들어야 했는지

or this fence that now emphasizes the social differences,

아니면 이 울타리가 다름을 강조하면서

even on the schoolyard.

운동장까지 갈라놓게 되었는지요.

But what I did know when I started to work there

하지만 전 제가 여기에서 일하기 시작하면서

was that I wanted to change something about the situation.

이런 상황을 바꾸고 싶어한다는 건 알았습니다.

I wanted to show both sides again how much they have in common.

전 양쪽을 보여주면서 서로가 얼마나 닮았는지 보여주고 싶었죠.

For children, this isn't very hard,

아이들에게는 이게 어렵지 않았죠.

because even though one schoolyard speaks Dutch

왜냐하면 한쪽에서는 네덜란드어를 쓴다 해도

and the other schoolyard, a mix of French, Turkish and Arabic,

다른 한쪽에서는 프랑스어, 터키어, 아랍어,

they all speak the universal language of play.

모든 언어를 섞어서 쓰며 노니까요.

And it turned out the desire to play

그리고 놀고 싶은 열망이

is a lot stronger than all the supposed differences between them.

그들 사이의 다름보다 훨씬 더 강하다는 게 밝혀졌죠.

I installed different games at the fence,

울타리에 다른 게임들을 설치했습니다.

which turned it into an interface, a common ground,

서로 접점과 공통점을 만드는 거죠.

instead of a barrier.

벽 대신에요.

And all of a sudden, children were drawing together,

그러자 갑자기, 아이들은 서로를 그리기 시작하며

exchanging pencils

연필을 교환하고

and talking on the phone.

전화통화를 했어요.

Especially the phones were a great success,

특히 휴대폰은 아주 효과적이었는데,

because they were so amazed

왜냐하면 아이들이 이 기기로

by the fact that they can hear the other side through this device

다른 쪽의 아이들의 목소리를 들을 수 있다는 사실을 놀라워하며

that they couldn't stop speaking.

대화를 멈추지 않았습니다.

In the case of an elementary school, parents play a very big role

초등학교 경우에는, 부모님들이

in shaping the everyday life and the environment of their children.

아이들이 매일 생활하는 환경을 만드는데 중요한 역할을 하죠.

So I knew that if I wanted to make a difference,

그래서 전 변화를 만들고 싶으면,

I had to somehow show them, too, how much they have in common

부모님들에게도 보여줘야 한다는 사실을 알았죠.

with the other side.

다른 쪽 사람들과 그들이 얼마나 닮았는지.

But for parents, this was a lot more difficult,

부모님들의 경우에는 훨씬 더 어려웠죠.

because most of them speak different languages,

대부분의 사람들이 쓰는 언어도 다르고,

work different jobs with different incomes,

직업도 다르고 수입도 다르고

live in different social circles,

사회 활동 반경도 다르고,

believe in different religions,

종교도 다르고,

experience different cultures

문화도 다르고

and share different values.

공유한 가치들도 다르니까요.

And then there was me, a student,

그리고 저도, 학생이며

different in all of these aspects again.

이런 면에서는 다 달랐고요.

So how could I show them

그래서 어떻게 하면 그들에게

how much they have in common?

공통점이 있다는 걸 보여줄 수 있을까?

I chose not to convince them myself

그들은 제가 설득하려 하지 않고

but by letting their own children do the talking.

그냥 아이들이 대화를 나누도록 놔뒀죠.

I designed a picture exhibition on the schoolyard

전 학교 운동장에 사진을 전시해

showing them their children playing together through the fence.

그들의 아이들이 울타리 사이에서 같이 노는 모습을 보여줬어요.

At the end of this exhibition,

이 전시가 끝난 후에

I asked people to write down their thoughts, ideas and wishes

전 사람들에게 이렇게 큰 나무 상자에

on these big wooden boxes,

그들의 생각, 소원들을 써서 넣어 달라고 부탁하며,

and I labeled the boxes with, "What do you think?"

전 상자에다 "어떻게 생각하세요?" 이렇게 적었고

A lot of people wrote "Yes" on it.

많은 사람들이 "좋아요" 이렇게 적어주었죠.

Yes, what?

좋아요, 무엇이?

I never mentioned my opinion or an action that should follow,

전 어떤 행동을 해야 하는지 그런 얘기를 전혀 하지 않았는데

so which question were they answering with yes?

그러면 그들은 어떤 질문에 좋다고 대답했을까요?

When I asked, they said yes, the fence should go.

제가 묻자 그들은 동의했고 그래서 울타리는 사라졌죠.

Yes, we want to play with the other side.

네. 저희는 울타리 너머 사람들과 같이 놀고 싶어요.

The pictures implied enough to answer a question

사진들은 충분히 질문에 대한 대답이 되었습니다.

that was never proposed.

한 번도 제안한 적이 없었던 제안이었죠.

People were seeing the absurdity of the situation again

사람들은 이 상황에 대한 부조리에 대해서 봤고

and felt how unnecessary this fence is

이 울타리가 얼마나 불필요한지

without me forcing an opinion on them.

제가 그들에게 생각을 강요하지 않아도 알게 되었죠.

The exhibition showed the two sides their similarities for once.

전시는 양쪽에 있는 사람들의 유사성을 한 번에 보여줬습니다.

That day, there was no us and them,

그 날은 우리와 그들이 없었죠.

there was no others.

다른 사람들도 없었습니다.

The mental wall started to crumble.

마음의 벽이 허물어지기 시작한 것이죠.

I chose the word "crumbling,"

저는 "허물다"라는 단어를 선택했습니다.

because breaking a mental wall is a long journey,

왜냐하면 마음의 벽을 부수는 건 아주 긴 여정이고,

and breaking a mental wall can be a lot more difficult

물리적인 벽을 부수는 것보다

than simply tearing down the physical one.

훨씬 더 어려운 일이기 때문이죠.

We have to challenge our opinion and beliefs

우리는 우리의 생각과 믿음에 맞서 싸워야 하고

and maybe even admit our own wrongs.

우리의 잘못을 인정해야 할 때도 있을 거예요.

So what happened in Brussels was a big step,

브루쉘에 일어난 일은 그러니까 큰 한 발자국입니다.

a step that has been taking generations in Germany.

그 발자국이 독일에서까지 이어질 수 있는 것이죠.

There are many examples from all over the world

제가 브루쉘과 독일에서 겪었던 일을 증명해주는

telling the same story I experienced in Brussels and Germany,

수많은 예들이 전 세계에 있습니다.

enough examples from which we could have learned.

저희가 충분히 배울 수 있을 정도죠.

But still, we seek walls as solutions for problems that they cannot solve,

하지만 여전히, 해결할 수 없는 문제들을 벽을 통해서 해결하려 합니다.

because walls don't fight the root of our problem.

왜냐하면 벽은 문제의 근본과 싸우지 않아도 되거든요.

If anything, they reduce the symptoms.

어찌됐든, 증상을 줄일 수 있으니까요.

So the next time you are planning to build a wall

그래서 다음 번에 벽을 쌓을 계획이거나

or you are planning to support someone who wants to build a wall,

혹은 그런 계획을 하는 사람을 지지하는 사람들에게

I want you to remember the impact you are really having.

전 그 벽의 진정한 효과가 무엇인지 생각해보라 하고 싶어요.

Because, this simple structure will hardly create more security.

왜냐하면 간단한 이 구조물은 단순히 안전을 보장하는 게 아니니까요.

Instead, it will affect the people living with it every day,

대신에, 사람들이 매일 살아가는데 영향을 미치죠.

people who, despite the geographic border,

지리적 경계선이 있다 하더라도

often share a lot of culture and values.

문화와 가치들을 공유하는 사람들이 있겠죠.

For them, you are not building one wall but two,

그들에게는 아마 벽 하나가 아니라 두 개를 세우면서

two walls which will take decades and generations to overcome again.

몇십 년 혹은 몇 세대가 극복해야 할 문제가 다시 생길지도 모릅니다.
