PM: What a beautiful way of saying it.

You grew up in the American South,

미국 남부에서 자라셨고,

and like all children,

다른 아이들처럼

a lot of who you became was molded by your parents.

당신도 부모님처럼 되고 싶었겠네요.

Tell me: What did they teach you about movement-building?

말해보죠. 부모님께서 무브먼트 빌딩 이 단체에 대해서 뭘 가르치셨나요?

MWE: I had extraordinary parents. I was so lucky.

저희 부모님은 평범하지 않으셨죠. 굉장히 운이 좋았습니다.

My mother was the best organizer I ever knew.

And she always insisted, even back then, on having her own dime.

She started her dairy so that she could have her penny,

and that sense of independence has certainly been passed on to me.

My daddy was a minister, and they were real partners.

And my oldest sibling is a sister,

I'm the youngest, and there are three boys in between.

But I always knew I was as smart as my brothers.

I always was a tomboy.

I always had the same high aspirations that they had.

But most importantly, we were terribly blessed,

even though we were growing up

in a very segregated small town in South Carolina --

we knew it was wrong.

I always knew, from the time I was four years old,

that I wasn't going to accept being put into slots.

But Daddy and Mama always had the sense that it was not us,

it was the outside world,

but you have the capacity to grow up to change it,

and I began to do that very early on.

But most importantly, they were the best role models,

because they said: if you see a need,

don't ask why somebody doesn't do it.

There was no home for the aged in our hometown.

제 고향에는 노인들을 위한 집이 없어요.

And Reverend Reddick, who had what we know now, 50 years later, as Alzheimer's,

and he began to wander the streets.

And so Daddy and Mama figured out he needed a place to go,

so we started a home for the aged.

Children had to cook and clean and serve.

I had 12 foster sisters and brothers.

My mother took them in after we left home, and she took them in before we left home.

And again, whenever you see a need, you try to fulfill it.

God runs, Daddy used to say, a full employment economy.

아버지께선 신께서는 완전고용 경제를 운영하신다고 하셨어요.

And so if you just follow the need,

그래서 그냥 해야 할 일을 따라가기만 한다면,

you will never lack for something to do or a real purpose in life.

And every issue that the Children's Defense Fund works on today

comes out of my childhood in a very personal way.

Little Johnny Harrington, who lived three doors down from me,

stepped on a nail; he lived with his grandmother,

got tetanus, went to the hospital, no tetanus shots, he died.

He was 11 years old.

그는 열한 살이었어요.

I remember that.

An accident in front of our highway,

turns out to have been two white truck drivers

and a migrant family that happened to be black.

흑인 이민자 가족 중 한 사람에게 일어난 사고였습니다.

We all ran out to help.

It was in the front of a church, and the ambulance came,

교회 앞에서 일어난 사고였고, 구급차가 왔는데

saw that the white truck drivers were not injured,

saw the black migrant workers were,

turned around and left them.

I never forgot that.

And immunizations was one of the first things

I worked on at the Children's Defense Fund

제가 아동보호기금에서 했던 일은

to make sure that every child gets immunized against preventable diseases.

Unequal schools ...

Separate and unequal,

분리와 불평등 속에서

hand-me-downs from the white schools.

백인 학교로부터 물건들을 물려받았습니다.

But we always had books in our house.

하지만 저희 집에는 항상 책들이 있었습니다.

Daddy was a great reader.

아버지는 엄청난 독서광이셨어요.

He used to make me read every night with him.

아버지는 저에게 매일 밤 책을 읽어 주셨어요.

I'd have to sit for 15 or 20 minutes.

15분에서 20분 저는 거기 앉아 있어야만 했죠.

One day I put a "True Confessions" inside a "Life Magazine"

and he asked me to read it out loud.

I never read a "True Confessions" again.

But they were great readers.

그렇지만 두 분 다 엄청난 독서광이셨죠.

We always had books before we had a second pair of shoes,

and that was very important.

And although we had hand-me-down books for the black schools

그럼에도 저희는 흑인 학교에서 책을 물려 받아야 했고

and hand-me-down everythings,

모든 것들을 다 물려 받아야만 했습니다.

it was a great need.

절실하게 필요한 일이었습니다.

He made it clear that reading was the window to the outside world,

and so that was a great gift from them.

But the reinforced lesson was that God runs a full employment economy,

and that if you just follow the need,

you will never lack for a purpose in life,

and that has been so for me.

We had a very segregated small town.

I was a rebel from the time I was four or five.

I went out to a department store

and there was "white" and "black" water signs,

but I didn't know that and didn't pay much attention to that,

and I was with one of my Sunday school teachers.

I drank out of the wrong water fountain,

and she jerked me away, and I didn't know what had happened,

and then she explained to me about black and white water.

I didn't know that, and after that,

I went home, took my little wounded psyche to my parents,

and told them what had happened, and said, "What's wrong with me?"

And they said, "It wasn't much wrong with you.

It's what's wrong with the system."

And I used to go then secretly and switch water signs

everywhere I went.

And it felt so good.

PM: There is no question that this legend is a bit of a rebel,

and has been for a long time.

굉장히 오랜시간 이어져 왔다는 사실에 의문의 여지가 없네요.

So you started your work as an attorney and with the Civil Rights Movement,

변호사로 일하기 시작하면서 흑인 인권 운동도 하시고,

and you worked with Dr. King on the original Poor People's Campaign.

마틴 루터 킹 목사와 함께 원래 경제 정의 실현 단체에서 일하셨잖아요.

And then you made this decision, 45 years ago,

그러면 45년 전에 아이들을 위한 국가적인 사회 단체를

to set up a national advocacy campaign for children.

만들기로 결정했다는 이야기잖아요.

Why did you choose that particular service, to children?

왜 하필이면, 아이들이었습니까?

MWE: Well, because so many of the things that I saw in Mississippi

그건 제가 미시시피와 남부 지역에 걸쳐서

and across the South

had to do with children.

아이들을 위해 일해야겠다고 생각했을 뿐이에요.

I saw children with bloated bellies in this country

who were close to starvation,

who were hungry,

who were without clothes,

and nobody wanted to believe

that there were children who were starving,

and that's a slow process.

And nobody wanted to listen.

아무도 듣고 싶어 하지 않았어요.

Every congressman that would come to Mississippi,

I'd say, "Go see," and most of them didn't want to do anything about it.

But I saw grinding poverty.

The state of Mississippi wanted, during voter registration efforts --

and with outside white kids coming in to help black citizens register to vote --

they wanted everybody to leave the state, so they were trying to starve them out.

And they switched from free food commodities

to food stamps that cost two dollars.

People had no income, and nobody in America wanted to believe

that there was anybody in America without any income.

Well, I knew hundreds of them, thousands of them.

And malnutrition was becoming a big problem.

And so one of these days came Dr. King down

on a number of things we were fighting to get the Head Start program --

which the state of Mississippi turned down --

And he went into a center

that the poor community was running without any help,

and he saw a teacher carve up an apple for eight or 10 children,

and he had to run out, because he was in tears.

He couldn't believe it.

But only when Robert Kennedy decided he would come --

I had gone to testify about the Head Start program,

because they were attacking.

And I asked, please, come and see yourself,

And they came, and he brought the press,

and that began to get the movement going.

But they wanted to push all the poor people to go north

And I'm proud of Mike Espy.

But you wouldn't have seen such grinding poverty,

and the outside white kids who'd come in to help register voters

in the 1964 Summer Project where we lost those three young men.

But once they left, the press left,

and there was just massive need,

And so, you know, Head Start came,

and we applied for it, because the state turned it down.

And that's true of a lot of states that don't take Medicaid these days.

was a more strategic way to proceed.

And so the Children's Defense Fund

was born out of the Poor People's Campaign.

But it was pretty clear that whatever you called

black independent or brown independent

was going to have a shrinking constituency.

And who can be mad at a two-month-old baby or at a two-year-old toddler?

A lot of people can be.

They don't want to feed them, neither, from what we've seen.

But it was the right judgment to make.

And so out of the privilege of serving

for two years, and there were two of them,

and it was not a failure,

because the seeds of change get planted

And I'm a good scut worker and a persistent person.

And you know, as a result,

I would say that all those people on food stamps today

ought to thank those poor people in the mud in Resurrection City.

But it takes a lot of follow-up, detailed work -- and never going away.

PM: And you've been doing it for 45 years,

and you've seen some amazing outcomes.

What are you proudest of out of the Children's Defense Fund?

MWE: Well, I think the children now have sort of become a mainstream issue.

We have got lots of new laws.

Millions of children are getting food.

Medicaid expansions for children.

We've been trying to reform the child welfare system for decades.

We finally got a big breakthrough this year,

and it says, be ready with the proposals when somebody's ready to move,

I've been trying to keep children out of foster care and out of institutions

and with their families, with preventive services.

That got passed.

그건 통과됐습니다.

But there are millions of children who have hope,

who have access to early childhood.

아직은 어린 아이들이 여전히 있습니다.

Now, we are not finished,

그래서 우리는 끝나지 않습니다.

and we are not going to ever feel finished

그리고 저희는 절대 끝났다고 느끼지 않을 겁니다.

until we end child poverty in the richest nation on earth.

It's just ridiculous that we have to be demanding that.

PM: And there are so many of the problems in spite of the successes,

What worries you the most?

MWE: What worries me is how irresponsible we adults in power have been

in passing on a healthier earth.

And it worries me when I read the "Bulletin of Atomic Scientists"

제가 "핵 과학자 회보"를 읽으면서 걱정을 했는데

and see now that we are two minutes from midnight,

지구 멸망까지 얼마 남지 않았다는 사실이 보였죠.

and that's gotten closer.

그건 점점 더 가까워지고 있어요.

We have put our future

우리는 우리의 미래와

and our children's future and safety at risk

우리 아이들의 미래, 전세계에서 일어나는

in a world that is still too much governed by violence.

안전문제는 여전히 너무 폭력적으로 다스려지고 있습니다.

We must end that.

우리는 이걸 끝내야만 해요.

We must stop investing in war and start investing in the young and in peace,

전쟁에 투자를 그만해야 하고 어린이들, 평화에 투자를 시작해야 하고

and we are really so far away from doing that.

And I don't want my grandchildren

to have to fight these battles all over again,

and so I get more radical.

The older I get, the more radical I get,

because there are just some things that we as adults have to do

And I looked at the sacrifices of Mrs. Hamer

and all those people in Mississippi

who risked their lives to give us a better life.

But the United States has got to come to grips

하지만 미국이 아이들에게 하는 투자를 실패하고

with its failure to invest in its children,

이런 일들을 하면 할수록

and it's the Achilles' heel of this nation.

미국에는 아킬레스건이 되어버렸죠.

How can you be one of the biggest economies in the world

세계에서 가장 잘 사는 나라 중 한 나라인데 어떻게

and you let 13.2 million children go live in poverty,

1320만 명의 아이들이 가난에 허덕이고

and you let children go homeless

뭔가를 하려고 할 때마다

when you've got the means to do it?

아이들이 노숙자가 되는 걸까요?

We've got to rethink who we are as a people,

우리는 세상에 모범이 되는 사람에 대해서

be an example for the world.

다시 생각할 필요가 있습니다.

There should be no poverty.

거기에는 가난이 없어야 합니다.

In fact, we want to say we're going to end poverty in the world.

사실, 저희는 이 세상에서 가난을 끝내고 싶습니다.

Just start at home.

그래서 집에서부터 시작했습니다.

And we've made real progress,

우리는 정말 진전을 이뤄냈지만

but it's such hard work,

너무 힘든 일이었고

and it's going to be our Achilles' heel.

저희의 아킬레스건이 되어버렸죠.

We should stop giving more tax cuts,

sorry folks, to billionaires rather than to babies

and their health care.

We should get our priorities straight.

That's not right, and it's not cost-effective.

그건 옳지 않고, 비용 효율이 높지도 않아요.

And the key to this country is going to be an educated child population,

이 나라에서 중요한 건 교육받는 아이들이 많아지고

and yet we've got so many children

그렇지만 아직 저희는 기본적인 읽기쓰기조차 하지 못하는

who cannot read or write at the most basic levels.

애들이 너무 많습니다.

We're investing in the wrong things,

저희는 이런 최악의 환경에 투자하는 것이고,

and I wouldn't be upset about anybody having one billion,

저는 누가 십억을 가졌든

10 billion [US dollars],

100억을 가졌든, 화내지 않을 겁니다.

if there were no hungry children,

굶어죽는 아이들이 없다면

if there were no homeless children,

집 없는 아이들이 없다면

if there were no uneducated children.

교육받지 못하는 아이들만 없다면요.

And so it's really about what does it mean to live

그리고 이것이 진정한 삶의 목적이고

and lead this life.

이 삶을 이끄는 원동력이죠.

Why were we put on this earth?

왜 우리가 이 지구에 태어났겠어요?

We were put on this earth to make things better

우리가 이 지구상에 태어난 이유는 다음 세대를 위해

for the next generations.

더 나은 지구를 만들기 위해서죠.

And here we're worrying about climate change

그리고 여기 우리는 기후변화와

and global warming.

지구온난화에 대해서 걱정하고 있어요.

And we're looking at, again, I constantly cite --

그리고 제가 계속 주장했던 대로 저희는 다시 살펴보는 겁니다-

I look at that "Bulletin of Atomic Scientists" every year.

매년 제가 "핵 과학자 회보"를 살펴보듯이요.

And it says now: "Two minutes to midnight."

거기에는 이렇게 쓰여있어요. "지구 멸망까지 이분."

Are we out of our minds, adults,

우리 어른들, 모두 다 정신이 나가서

about passing on a better a world to our children?

아이들에게 더 나은 세상을 물려주는데는 관심이 없잖아요?

That's what our purpose is, to leave a better world for everybody,

저희의 목표가 그거예요, 더 나은 세상을 물려주자,

and the concept of enough for everybody.

모든 사람들에게 충분하게 이 개념이죠.

There should be no hungry children in this world

돈이 많고 부자인 사람들이 있으면

with the rich wealth that we have.

이 세상에 가난한 아이들은 없어야 합니다.

And so I can't think of a bigger cause,

이것 보다 더 큰 문제는 생각할 수 없어요.

and I think that I'm driven by my faith.

그리고 저는 제 신념을 따른다고 생각해요.

And it's been a privilege to serve,

봉사한다는 것은 영광이지만

but I always had the best role models in the world.

저에겐 항상 이 세상에 최고의 롤모델들이 있었어요.

Daddy always said God runs a full employment economy,

아버지는 항상 하느님께서 이 모든 걸 보살펴주신단다,

and that if you just follow the need,

필요를 따라가기만 한다면

you'll never lack for a purpose in life.

삶의 목적을 잃을 일은 없을 거라고 말씀하셨어요.

And I watched the partnership -- because my mother was a true partner.

그리고 전 동반자를 봤어요. 어머니가 진정한 동반자였습니다.

I always knew I was as smart as my brothers, at least.

적어도 전 항상 제가 형제들만큼은 똑똑하다는 사실을 알았어요.

And we always knew that we were not just to be about ourselves,

그리고 저희는 저희 자신에게만 머무르지 않고,

but that we were here to serve.

여기에서 봉사를 해야 한다는 사실도 항상 알고 있었습니다.
