Now let's go to some newer cities.

Six downtowns built across six continents in the 20th century.

Why do none of these places have any of the charming characteristics

of our older cities?

Or let's go to six suburbs built on six continents in the 20th century.

그럼 20세기에 6개 대륙에서 생겨난 6개 교외 지역으로 가볼까요?

Why do none of them have any of the lyrical qualities

왜 이들 중 어느 곳에서도 서정적인 요소를 찾을 수 없을까요?

that we associate with the places that we cherish the most?

우리가 가장 소중히 여기는 다른 장소들 처럼 말이죠.

Now, maybe you think I'm just being nostalgic --

제가 옛것에 향수를 느껴서 그런 거라고 생각하실지 모르겠네요.

why does it matter?

무엇이 문제일까요?

Who cares if there is this creeping sameness besetting our planet?

이 지구가 이렇게 획일화된 것들로 뒤덮혀도 누가 신경이나 쓸까요?

Well, it matters because most people around the world

이것이 중요한 이유는

대부분 사람들은 도시 지역에 마음이 끌리기 때문입니다.

are gravitating to urban areas globally.

And how we design those urban areas could well determine

우리가 이런 도시 지역을 어떻게 디자인하는가에 따라

인류가 번성할지 말지의 여부가 결정됩니다.

whether we thrive or not as a species.

So, we already know that people who live in transit-rich areas,

우리가 이미 알고 있기로

대중교통이 잘 갖춰진 지역이나 아파트에서 사는 사람들은

live in apartment buildings,

have a far lower carbon footprint

시골에 사는 사람들에 비해서

than their suburban counterparts.

훨씬 작은 탄소발자국을 갖습니다.

So maybe one lesson from that is if you love nature,

이것이 주는 교훈은

자연을 사랑한다면 시골에서 살지 말라는 것입니다.

you shouldn't live in it.

(Laughter)

But I think the dry statistics

하지만 교통 중심 개발에 대한 딱딱한 통계 자료만으로는

of what's known as transit-oriented development

only tells part of the story.

단지 일부 상황만 알 수 있다고 생각합니다.

Because cities, if they're going to attract people,

have to be great.

They have to be powerful magnets with distinctive appeal

to bring in all those new green urbanites.

And this is not just an aesthetic issue, mind you.

그런데 여기에는 심미적인 부분만 문제가 되는 게 아닙니다.

This is an issue of international consequence.

문제는 국제적 영향력이죠.

Because today, every day,

왜냐하면 요즘엔

날마다 문자 그대로 수십만 명이 어딘가의 도시로 몰려듭니다.

literally hundreds of thousands of people are moving into a city somewhere,

mainly in the Global South.

주로 제3세계의 도시죠.

And when you think about that, ask yourself:

이와 관련해서 한번 생각해보세요.

Are they condemned to live in the same bland cities

그 사람들은 20세기에 만들어진 이 획일적고 밋밋한 도시에서

we built in the 20th century,

살 수 밖에 없는 운명일까요?

or can we offer them something better?

아니면 뭔가 더 나은 환경을 제공할 수는 없을까요?

And to answer that question,

이 질문에 답하려면

you have to unpack how we got here in the first place.

어떻게 이런 도시가 만들어졌는지를 가장 먼저 살펴봐야 합니다.

First: mass production.

첫 번째 이유는 대량 생산입니다.

Just like consumer goods and chain stores,

우리는 소비재 상품이나 체인점들처럼

we mass-produce glass and steel and concrete and asphalt and drywall,

유리, 철강, 콘크리트, 아스팔트, 건물 벽체 등을 대량으로 생산합니다.

and we deploy them in mind-numbingly similar ways across the planet.

그리고 그것들을 전 세계로 정신 없이 뿌려대죠.

Second: regulation.

두 번째 이유는 규제입니다.

So, take cars, for instance.

자동차를 예로 들어보죠.

Cars travel at very high speeds.

자동차는 매우 빠른 속도로 이동합니다.

They're susceptible to human error.

그리고 인간의 실수에 민감하죠.

So when we're asked, as architects, to design a new street,

그래서 우리 건축가들은 새로운 도로 설계를 요청받으면

we have to look at drawings like this,

that tell us how high a curb needs to be,

도로 경계석이 얼마나 높아야 하는지 알아야 하죠.

that pedestrians need to be over here and vehicles over there,

보행자는 이곳에 두고, 자동차는 저곳

a loading zone here, a drop-off there.

화물 구역은 이곳, 경사면은 저곳.

What the car really did in the 20th century

20세기에 들어 자동차로 인해

is it created this carved-up, segregated landscape.

이렇게 경관이 나뉘고, 분리되는 결과가 초래되었습니다.

Or take the ladder fire truck -- you know, those big ladder trucks

사다리차는 또 어떤가요.

아시죠. 화재시 인명 구조에 쓰이는 긴 사다리가 달린 트럭이요.

that are used to rescue people from burning buildings?

Those have such a wide turning radius,

그런 차들은 회전 반경이 크기 때문에

that we have to deploy an enormous amount of pavement, of asphalt,

엄청난 양의 도로 포장과 아스팔트를 투입해야만

to accommodate them.

그 차들을 수용할 수 있습니다.

Or take the critically important wheelchair.

아니면 아주 중요한 휠체어를 생각해보죠.

A wheelchair necessitates a landscape of minimal slopes

휠체어는 최소한의 경사를 갖는 지형이 요구됩니다.

and redundant vertical circulation.

수직의 동선이 불필요하죠.

So wherever there's a stair, there has to be an elevator or a ramp.

계단이 있는 곳에는 승강기나 경사로가 반드시 있어야 합니다.

Now, don't get me wrong, please -- I am all for pedestrian safety,

그렇다고 오해하지는 마세요.

저도 보행자의 안전과 소방 업무의 중요성에는 공감합니다.

firefighting

and certainly, wheelchair access.

휠체어의 접근성도 물론이고요.

Both of my parents were in wheelchairs at the end of their lives,

제 부모님도 돌아가시기 전에 휠체어 생활을 하셨어요.

so I understand very much that struggle.

저도 그 어려움을 잘 알고 있습니다.

But we also have to acknowledge that all of these well-intentioned rules,

하지만 우리는 선의에 바탕을 두는 규칙에 관한 것도 알아야 합니다.

they had the tremendous unintended consequence

그것이 의도치 않은 엄청난 결과를 가져오기 때문이죠.

of making illegal the ways in which we used to build cities.

Similarly illegal: at the end of the 19th century,

불법과 관련해서

right after the elevator was invented,

we built these charming urban buildings,

these lovely buildings, all over the world,

from Italy to India.

이탈리아에서 인도에 이르기까지요.

And they had maybe 10 or 12 apartments in them.

그중에는 10곳에서 12곳의 아파트 건물도 있었죠.

They had one small elevator and a staircase that wrapped them

그런 건물에는 엘리베이터가 하나 있고, 그걸 계단이 둘러싸고 있습니다.

and a light well.

그리고 채광 구조도 있죠.

And not only were they charming buildings that were cost-effective,

이런 건물은 멋질 뿐만 아니라 비용면에서도 효율적입니다.

they were communal --

공동체적 구조라서

you ran into your neighbor on that stairwell.

계단에서 이웃을 만날 수도 있습니다.

Well, you can't build this, either.

이런 건 이제 만들 수 없습니다.

By contrast, today, when we have to build a major new apartment building somewhere,

이에 반해 지금은, 어딘가에 새로운 아파트를 지어야 할 때

we have to build lots and lots of elevators

엘리베이트를 아주 많이 둬야 하고

and lots of fire stairs,

비상 계단도 많아야 합니다.

and we have to connect them with these long, anonymous, dreary corridors.

그리고 그것들을 길고, 특색 없고, 삭막한 복도와 연결해야 하죠.

Now, developers -- when they're confronted with the cost

여기서 개발업자들은

이런 공공 건물의 비용에 관한 문제와 직면하게 됩니다.

of all of that common infrastructure,

they have to spread that cost over more apartments,

건설 비용을 분배해서 더 많은 아파트를 확보해야 하죠.

so they want to build bigger buildings.

What that results in is the thud,

그 결과로 얻게 되는 건 거대한 덩어리입니다.

the dull thud of the same apartment building being built

in every city across the world.

And this is not only creating physical sameness,

it's creating social sameness,

because these buildings are more expensive to build,

and it helped to create an affordability crisis

in cities all over the world, including places like Vancouver.

Now, I said there was a third reason for all this sameness,

and that's really a psychological one.

정말 심리적인 부분인데요.

It's a fear of difference,

and architects hear this all the time from their clients:

"If I try that new idea, will I be sued?

"그 새로운 아이디어를 적용하면, 고소당하게 될까요?

Will I be mocked?

사람들이 무시하지 않을까요?

Better safe than sorry."

And all of these things have conspired together

이 모든 것들이 한데 뭉쳐서

to blanket our planet with a homogeneity that I think is deeply problematic.

정말 문제가 되는 획일성으로 우리 지구를 덮어버렸죠.

So how can we do the opposite?

이걸 바꾸려면 어떻게 해야 할까요?

How can we go back to building cities

어떻게 해야 도시 건설을 되돌려

that are physically and culturally varied again?

물리적, 문화적 다양성을 되찾을 수 있을까요?

How can we build cities of difference?

어떻게 해야 서로 다른 모습의 도시들을 만들 수 있을까요?

I would argue that we should start

제가 생각하는 그 출발점은

by injecting into the global the local.

세계적인 것에 지역색을 담는 것입니다.

This is already happening with food, for instance.

예를 들자면, 이미 음식에서 그런 움직임이 나타나고 있죠.

You just look at the way in which craft beer has taken on corporate beer.

수제 맥주가 기업제조 맥주의 형태를 띄는 과정을 보시면 됩니다.

Or, how many of you still eat Wonder Bread?

요즘도 원더 브레드 식빵을 드시는 분 계신가요?

I'd bet most of you don't.

아마 거의 없을 겁니다.

And I bet you don't because you don't want processed food

안 드시는 이유는 아마 가공 식품이 싫어서겠죠.

in your life.

So if you don't want processed food,

가공 식품은 그렇게 싫어하면서도

why would you want processed cities?

가공된 도시는 왜 좋아하는 거죠?

Why would you want these mass-produced, bleached places

왜 똑같은 모습의 빛바랜 도시를 만들고

where all of us have to live and work every day?

매일 그 속에서 생활하고 일하려고 하는 걸까요?

So, technology was a big part of the problem in the 20th century.

기술은 20세기에 들어 많은 문제를 만들어냈습니다.

When we invented the automobile, what happened is,

자동차가 처음 발명되었을 떄

the world all bent towards the invention.

그 발명품에 맞춰서 온 세상이 바뀌었습니다.

And we recreated our landscape around it.

주변 지형도 그에 따라 재창조되었죠.

In the 21st century,

21세기에 들어서는

technology can be part of the solution --

기술이 해결책을 내놓을 수 있습니다.

if it bends to the needs of the world.

세상이 필요로 하는 것에 집중한다면 말이죠.

So what do I mean by that?

이 말이 무슨 의미일까요?

Take the autonomous vehicle.

자율주행 차량을 예를 들어보죠.

I don't think the autonomous vehicle is exciting because it's a driverless car.

저는 자율주행차가 대단한 이유가 운전자가 없어서가 아니라고 생각해요.

That, to me, only implies

제가 보기에는

that there's even more congestion on the roads, frankly.

사실 도로가 훨씬 더 혼잡해질 것으로 생각됩니다.

I think what's exciting about the autonomous vehicle is the promise --

자율주행차가 대단한 진짜 이유는 약속에 있다고 생각해요.

and I want to stress the word "promise,"

given the recent accident in Arizona --

최근 애리조나에서 있었던 사고 탓도 있습니다.

the promise that we could have these small, urban vehicles

that could safely comingle with pedestrians and bicycles.

That would enable us to design humane streets again,

이를 통해 인간 중심의 거리로 돌아가 다시 설계할 수 있을 것입니다.

streets without curbs,

거리에 경계석이 사라지고

maybe streets like the wooden walkways on Fire Island.

파이어 아일랜드 지역의 목재 산책로 같은 거리도 가능합니다.

Or maybe we could design streets with the cobblestone of the 21st century,

아니면 자갈로 된 거리를 21세기에도 만들 수 있겠죠.

something that captures kinetic energy, melts snow,

그런 길은 보행자의 운동에너지를 흡수해서 눈을 녹이기도 하고

helps you with your fitness when you walk.

걸을 때 건강에도 도움이 됩니다.

Or remember those big ladder fire trucks?

아니면 아까 말씀드린 사다리차 기억하시죠?

What if we could replace them and all the asphalt that comes with them

그런 차량과 필요한 아스팔트 대신에

with drones and robots that could rescue people from burning buildings?

드론와 로봇으로 화재 현장에서 사람을 구하면 어떨까요?

And if you think that's outlandish, you'd be amazed to know

말도 안된다고 생각하시겠지만

how much of that technology is already being used today

현재 구조활동에 이미 이런 기술이 쓰인다는 걸 알면 놀라실 겁니다.

in rescue activity.

But now I'd like you to really imagine with me.

이걸 한번 상상해보세요.

Imagine if we could design the hovercraft wheelchair.

부상식 휠체어를 설계하면 어떨까요?

Right?

괜찮겠죠?

An invention that would not only allow equal access,

그런 걸 발명하기만 한다면 평등한 접근성뿐만 아니라

but would enable us to build the Italian hill town of the 21st century.

이탈리아의 언덕 마을을 21세기에도 만들 수 있을 겁니다.

I think you'd be amazed to know

놀랄만한 사실은

that just a few of these inventions, responsive to human need,

인간의 필요에 의해 탄생하는 단 몇 가지 발명품만으로도

would completely transform the way we could build our cities.

도시를 전혀 다른 모습으로 바꿀 수 있다는 것입니다.

Now, I bet you're also thinking:

다들 이렇게 생각하시겠죠.

"We don't have kinetic cobblestones or flying wheelchairs yet,

"움직이는 자갈길이나 떠다니는 휠체어는 아직 없잖아.

so what can we do about this problem with today's technology?"

현재의 기술만으로 문제를 해결하려면 어떻게 하지?"

And my inspiration for that question comes from a very different city,

저는 이 문제와 관련하여 전혀 다른 도시에서 영감을 얻었습니다.

the city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

바로 몽골의 울란바토르입니다.

I have clients there

그 지역의 의뢰인으로부터

who have asked us to design a 21st-century open-air village

21세기의 노천 마을을 설계해달라는 요청을 받았죠.

that's sustainably heated using today's technology,

현재 기술을 이용해서 지속가능 난방을 할 수 있는 마을을

in the heart of their downtown.

시내 중심가에 만들어 달라는 것이었어요.

And that's to cope with their frigid winters.

그 지역의 혹한에 대처하기 위한 것이었죠.

And the project is both poetry and prose.

그 프로젝트는 일종의 시와 산문과도 같았습니다.

The poetry is really about evoking the local:

시적인 부분은 지역 특색을 부각시키는 것이었죠.

the mountainous terrain,

산악 지형을 드러내기 위해

using colors to pick up the spectacular light,

화려한 조명으로 색조를 띄게 하고

understanding how to interpret the nomadic traditions

몽골이라는 나라를 만든

유목 생활의 전통을 표현할 방법을 찾아야 했습니다.

that animate the nation of Mongolia.

The prose has been the development of a catalogue of buildings,

산문적인 면은 건물의 구성을 개발하는 것이었습니다.

of small buildings that are fairly affordable,

비용이 적게 드는 소규모 건물이어야 하고

using local construction materials and technology

그 지역의 건설 재료와 건설 기술을 이용하되

that can still provide new forms of housing,

새로운 형태의 주택을 지어야 했고

new workspace,

새로운 업무용 건물과

new shops

새로운 상점 건물

and cultural buildings, like a theater or a museum --

극장이나 박물관 같은 문화 공간의 건물도 필요했습니다.

even a haunted house.

심지어 유령의 집도 필요했죠.

While working on this in our office,

사무실에서 작업을 하면서

we've realized that we're building upon the work of our colleagues,

동료 건축가들의 작업을 토대로 건물을 설계하고 있었습니다.

including architect Tatiana Bilbao, working in Mexico City;

멕시코시티의 건축가 타티아나 빌바오를 포함해서

Pritzker laureate Alejandro Aravena, working in Chile;

프릿츠커상을 수상한 칠레의 알레한드로 아라베나

and recent Pritzker winner Balkrishna Doshi, working in India.

그리고 최근 프릿츠커상을 수상한 인도의 발크리슈나 도시 같은 이들이죠.

And all of them are building spectacular new forms of affordable housing,

그들이 작업한 것들은 모두 새로운 형태의 국민주택이었습니다.

but they're also building cities of difference,

그들은 그것으로 전혀 다른 도시를 만들었습니다.

because they're building cities that respond to local communities,

그들은 지역 공동체가 원하는 도시를 만들었고

local climates

지역의 기후 특성과

and local construction methods.

지역의 건설 방법을 고려했습니다.

We're doubling down on that idea, we're researching a new model

우리는 그 아이디어를 발전시켜 새로운 모델을 연구하고 있었죠.

for our growing cities with gentrification pressures,

고급화를 추구하는 도시가 늘어나는 것에 대응해서

that could build upon that late-19th-century model

중앙부에 설비 구조를 두는 19세기 후반의 형태를 바탕으로

with that center core,

새로운 모델을 적용하고자 했습니다.

but a prototype that could shape-shift in response to local needs

초기 원형의 형태를 바꿔가며 지역의 요구에 대응하고

and local building materials.

지역의 건설 재료를 고려했죠.

All of these ideas, to me, are nostalgia-free.

제 생각에 이들 아이디어에서는 향수병을 느낄 수 없습니다.

They all tell me

그것이 말해주는 것은

that we can build cities that can grow,

우리가 성장하는 도시를 건설하지만

but grow in a way that reflects the diverse residents

그 도시에서 사는 다양한 주민의 요구를 반영하면서 성장시키고

that live in those cities;

grow in a way that can accommodate all income groups,

모든 소득계층을 아우르면서 성장하고

all colors, creeds, genders.

모든 인종, 종교, 성별을 받아들이죠.

We could build such spectacular cities that we could disincentivize sprawl

우리는 밖으로 확장하지 않고도 그렇게 멋진 도시를 만들 수 있고

and actually protect nature.

자연을 보호할 수도 있습니다.

We can grow cities that are high-tech,

우리는 첨단기술로 도시를 성장시킬 수 있고

but also respond to the timeless cultural needs of the human spirit.

우리 영혼이 필요로 하는 무궁무진한 문화적 요구에도 대응할 수 있습니다.

I'm convinced that we can build cities of difference

저는 우리가 다른 모습의 도시를 건설할 수 있다고 확신합니다.

that help to create the global mosaic to which so many of us aspire.

그리고 많은 사람들이 원하는 세계적인 도시 모자이크를 만들게 될 것입니다.
