about all of the things that we need to do

What would you say is the state of play with climate action now, six months later?

AG: Well, thanks in part to many of the people

that are part of the TED community,

we've seen tremendous progress in the development of affordable,

cheap, solar electricity, wind electricity,

electric vehicles, batteries,

전기차, 전지, 재생농업,

regenerative agriculture, green hydrogen is coming along,

sustainable forestry.

But unfortunately,

the crisis is getting much worse,

much faster than predicted.

And it is getting worse at a rate faster

than the rate at which we're deploying these solutions.

We have everything we need,

save sufficient political will.

It's been that way for a while.

And just since the Glasgow conference,

we have seen a lot of backsliding

환경을 보호하자는 정치인들의 의지는 퇴보했고

and we've seen financial institutions,

banks and large investors,

pumping more and more and more money into more and more fossil fuels.

화석연료에 셀 수 없이 많은 자본을 투입했습니다.

It is quite literally insane.

Today, we will put another 162 million tonnes

오늘도 하루에 1.6억 톤의 공해물질이 배출되어

into the thin shell of atmosphere surrounding the planet.

지구 대기층에 얇은 막을 만들 겁니다.

And the accumulated amount now traps as much extra heat

이렇게 쌓인 막은 열 방출을 막게 되는데,

as would be released by 600,000 Hiroshima-class atomic bombs

exploding every 24 hours.

Just, you know, 95 miles northeast of here

Yesterday, massive death in the Philippines

from another superstorm fueled by the climate crisis.

Chile just yesterday declared a drought emergency.

But we are seeing the development of the solutions.

자연을 보호하는 기술은 발전했지만

Unfortunately, the financial interest,

안타깝게도

화석연료 기업 등 재계의 관심은

the fossil fuel companies,

have captured the policy-making process in key countries

주요 국가의 정책 결정에 관여해

and have intentionally zombified as many people as they can

전 세계의 수많은 사람들을 속이려 하고 있습니다.

around the world

with false messaging that they knew was false.

거짓인 줄 알면서도 거짓말로 속이고 있어요.

They knew it,

it's been proven to a fare-thee-well.

And as a consequence,

our political decision-making process in key countries

is locked, paralyzed.

So the political will necessary to break through this

has to be expressed in a much more effective way.

We are nearing a political event horizon.

And in the United States, JP Morgan Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo ...

Others, Bank of America, Royal Bank of Canada here ...

Several banks in Canada joined the Net-Zero Banking Alliance,

and then last year they doubled the amount of money

pumped into the tar sands,

which is the dirtiest form of fossil fuels.

You know, when junkies

can't use the veins in their arms and legs anymore,

That's what the tar sands is like.

So I want to say

that this is a moment when we have to rise to this occasion.

Abraham Lincoln said the occasion is piled with difficulty,

piled high with difficulty,

and we have to rise with the occasion.

As our case is new, we must think anew and act anew.

We have to find ways to solve the democracy crisis

in order to solve the climate crisis.

WPR: Well, you know, I think with the war in Ukraine,

we're now seeing the question of energy security being brought center-stage.

And I'm curious what you think that will do in terms of accelerating

or decelerating the energy transition?

AG: Yeah, well, this should be a moment of global epiphany.

This is a fossil fuel war, as many have said.

And the timidity of some European countries, understandably,

because they are so dependent on Russian gas and oil,

is another consequence of our dependence.

And then we see this horrible scene

where the United States goes begging other petrostates,

like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and Iran,

to pump up more and more fossil fuels.

We should see this as a threat to national security and global security.

It is a threat to disadvantaged communities.

I mean, the coal pollution from burning fossil fuels

kills nine million people every year.

A large multiple of the number of people killed by COVID

are killed annually by the particulate pollution

that comes from fossil fuels.

We can save money,

we can fight inflation, by the way.

including renewable energy, is massively deflationary.

There are multiple reasons why we should see this

as a moment of decision

to make a big change and get off of fossil fuels.

결정의 순간이라는 사실을

뒷받침하는 근거가 매우 많습니다.

We can't keep pumping more and more money in pursuit of short term profit

이제는 눈앞의 이익만 좇아 계속 돈을 쏟아부으며

in activities that are destroying the future of humanity.

인류의 미래를 파괴할 순 없습니다.

This is not a time for moral cowardice.

그런 비겁한 행위를 멈춰야 합니다.

This is not a time for surrender

현실에 굴복하지 않고

and reckless indifference to the fate of humanity.

도외시했던 인류의 운명과 직면해야 할 때입니다.

WPR: I think in thinking about this being a time for change,

WPR: 저 역시 이제는 바뀌어야 한다 생각합니다.

the IPCC recently put out a report

최근 IPCC의 보고서에 따르면

where they said that if we do want to come around the bend,

that we have until 2025 to see CO2 levels peak.

2025년에 이산화탄소 수치가 최고조에 이른다고 합니다.

I mean, that's just three years from now.

이제는 3년밖에 남지 않았는데 어떻게 생각하시나요?

How realistic do you think that actually?

AG: 보고서에 따르면

AG: Well, actually, what they said,

2020년에서 최대 2025년 사이에 최고조에 달한다고 예상합니다.

it needs to peak between 2020 and no later than 2025, yes.

First, let me share some good news from that dire IPCC report.

일단 그래도 좋은 소식을 알려드리자면

말씀하셨던 IPCC 보고서에는 이런 내용도 있습니다.

They also said if we reach net-zero, true net-zero,

완전한 탄소 중립을 달성한다면

then the temperatures on our planet will stop going up

지구의 기온 상승이 멈출 거라고 해요.

with a lag of as little as three to five years.

3년에서 5년 내로 멈출 것이고

And if we stay at net-zero,

탄소 중립을 유지한다면

half of the human-caused CO2 in the atmosphere

인간이 배출한 이산화탄소의 절반은

will fall out of the atmosphere in as little as 25 to 30 years.

25년에서 30년 내에 사라질 거라고 예상합니다.

We have the technologies, we have the solutions,

인류는 기술을 보유하고 있고 해결책 또한 알고 있으며

we have the ability to stop this progressive destruction

of the future of humanity and start the long healing process.

But we have to break through the capture of our political systems.

They say boycotts don't work.

Should we boycott all of these banks and all of these financial institutions?

은행이나 금융기관을 사용하지 않을 순 없지 않습니까?

You know, scientists, climate scientists,

기후과학자 중 몇몇은

some of them announced last week and started doing this,

gluing themselves to the doors,

to the gates of these fossil fuels facilities.

If climate scientists have reached the conclusion

that more facts and more data and more research is of absolutely no good

unless we, the people, can find the means

to break through the imprisonment of our self-determination

on the part of large, massive polluters who are just looking at profits,

then the scientists say they have to go into the streets.

자기들도 시위하러 나가야 한다고 말했겠죠.

So I'm sorry to get all hot and charged-up about this.

WPR: I think everyone appreciates it.

AG: But yes, what the IPCC report --

I mean, you know, it's an asymptotic curve

that gets closer and closer to absolute panic, OK?

And all the reports are very similar.

This is real.

You know, Voltaire once said, if you can convince people of absurdities,

you can convince them to commit atrocities.

We are seeing that in Ukraine today.

We are seeing that on a global basis

with this reckless indifference to the future of humanity.

전 세계의 풍조에서도 확인할 수 있습니다.

What will we say to the next generations

다음 세대한테 이런 모습을 보이면

when they look back and see, you had the chance to do this?

어떤 변명을 할 수 있겠습니까?

We have the means.

우린 해결할 수단을 갖고 있습니다.

The International Energy Agency,

국제 에너지 기구 IEA에서는

says that in order to cut emissions by 50 percent in 2030,

2030년까지 탄소 배출량을 50%로 줄일 수 있는

we have all of the technologies we need,

기술을 갖추고 있으며

fully developed, with deployment plans that have been proven to work.

이미 개발이 완료되어서 실현할 수 있는 수준이라 합니다.

For the next 50 percent between 2030 and 2050,

나머지 50%를 해결할 기술은 2030년에서 2050년 사이에 완성되며

all of the technologies are in various stages of development.

현재 여러 개발단계를 거치고 있습니다.

They can be ready if we decide to develop them quickly enough,

진정으로 서둘러 해결하려 한다면

they will be ready.

완성은 순식간입니다.

We have to stop destroying our future.

인류의 미래를 파괴하는 일을 멈춰야 합니다.

It sounds so simple,

말이야 쉽지만 그러기 위해선

but we have to break through this paralysis.

마비된 정치를 타개해야 합니다.
