I don't know about you, but when I was little,

story time was always one of my favorite parts of the day.

And I loved reading to my two sons when they were small, too.

It's that special time

Well, that's how it is for some children,

but for other children,

there isn't a parent around to read to them.

I'd like to tell you about Sophie.

'소피'라는 아이의 얘기입니다.

Sophie's five years old and lives with her parents.

부모님과 함께 사는 다섯 살 된 소피는

One day, there's a bang at the door.

Sophie hears lots of shouting; her mum's crying.

She sees the police dragging her father away.

Sophie's afraid. She starts crying, too.

Weeks go by.

Sophie doesn't know what's happened to her dad.

Children at school start to tease her.

They call her names.

Somebody's mum has heard that Sophie's dad is in prison.

아빠가 감옥에 간 사실을 아무개 엄마가 알아 버렸거든요.

Sophie pretends to be ill so she doesn't have to go to school.

소피는 꾀병을 부리며 학교에 가지 않습니다.

And her teacher can't understand why she's so far behind

선생님은 이 아이가 왜 학업에 뒤쳐지는지

with her schoolwork.

이해하지 못합니다.

After what seems a long, long time to Sophie,

소피에겐 아주 긴 시간이 흐르고,

a letter arrives.

편지 한 통이 도착하는데,

It's from her dad.

The writing is very messy.

아주 지저분하지만 글씨지만,

The letter makes her mum cry, but she reads a little out to Sophie.

He says that he's OK and that he's missing them.

아빠는 잘 지내고, 가족들이 보고 싶다는 내용입니다.

It's a short letter.

아주 짧은 편지죠.

Sophie says she'd like to go and see her dad, wherever he is.

세상 어디든 아빠를 보러 가고 싶다고 소피는 말하지만,

But her mum says it's too far away, and they can't afford the journey.

엄마는 그곳이 너무 멀어 갈 형편이 아니라고 말합니다.

Then one day the phone rings.

그러던 어느 날 전화가 울리죠.

"Sophie, come speak to daddy."

"소피야, 와서 아빠랑 통화해."

Dad sounds different, far away.

아빠는 멀고 생소한 목소리로

He says he can't talk for very long,

오래 얘기할 수 없다고 하는데,

and anyway, it's very noisy wherever he is.

왠일인지, 잡음이 아주 많고,

And Sophie doesn't know what to say to him.

아빠한테 딱히 할 말도 떠오르지 않습니다.

Well, as stories go, that's not a very nice one.

얘기하고 있자니, 기분 좋은 이야기가 아니네요.

In the United Kingdom, 200,000 children

영국에서는 20만 명의 아이들이

experience the shame and isolation of a parent in prison.

Two hundred thousand.

That's more than the number of children each year

who are affected by their parents divorcing.

And it can affect the children of prisoners very deeply.

There can be problems at school,

학교에 적응하지 못하고,

and they're three times more likely to suffer from mental health issues.

In so many ways,

children are the unintended victims of their parents' crimes.

Until last November, I was a serving prisoner,

저는 사기죄로 작년 11월까지

imprisoned for fraud.

복역하면서,

I was dishonest, and I paid the penalty.

부정하게 산 죗값을 치렀습니다.

Before that, I'd been a practicing solicitor for 30 years.

I'd had a happy and stable upbringing,

a good education,

a happy marriage, which, I'm pleased to say, continues.

I have two adult sons.

When they were growing up, I did my best to be around for them

as much as I could.

And I took a careful interest in what they did.

I read to my boys every night,

and ironically, our favorite story was "Burglar Bill."

But when I got to prison, it soon became apparent

that my background was very different to that of most of the prisoners.

Few of the men that I met had had a decent education.

Indeed, many associated education with humiliation and failure.

I can tell you firsthand that prison is dehumanizing.

제 경험 상, 감옥은 아주 비인간적인 곳입니다.

Prisoners harden up, they shut down, they close in ...

살아남기 위해 거칠어지고,

just to survive.

마음을 닫아 버리죠.

And this can be devastating for families.

가족들에게도 아주 가혹한 일입니다.

In fact, maintaining contact with your family from prison

실제로 감옥에서 가족들과 꾸준히 연락하는 건

can be very difficult indeed.

너무나 어려운 일이고,

And if a child does get to see their parent in prison,

면회오는 아이들까지

they have to go through the same pat-down searches as the adults.

일반 성인들과 같이 몸수색을 받고,

They walk through the same detector frames,

금속 탐지기와 탐지견을

they're sniffed by the same sniffer dogs,

거쳐야만 합니다.

and all because some children have been the unwitting carriers

아무것도 모르는 아이들을 통해 마약이나 휴대전화를

밀반입하기도 하니까요.

of drugs and mobile phones.

And when they get through to see their parent,

이렇게 막상 부모를 보게 되도

they may be tired from a long journey,

먼길을 와 피곤하고, 어색해 쭈뼛거리고,

shy, tongue-tied, even upset.

불편해 하기도 하죠.

And it isn't easy for the parents, who may not be getting along.

자녀들과의 사이가 좋지 않다면 더더욱 어려운 일입니다.

For many reasons, not just these,

그 밖에 다양한 이유로,

over half of prisoners lose contact with their children and families.

가족과 연락이 끊기는 재소자들이 절반이 넘습니다.

How can we help prisoners to stay in contact with their families?

어떻게 해야 가족들과의 관계를 잘 유지할 수 있을까요?

When I was a prisoner at Channings Wood Prison,

제가 채닝스 우드 교도소에 있을 때,

I began working for a charity called Storybook Dads.

'책 읽어주는 아빠들'이란 자선 단체에서 일했는데,

Storybook Dads began in 2003,

2003년, '샤론 베리'라는

when Sharon Berry, a civilian worker in a prison, realized just how much

민간인 신분으로 교도소에서 일하던 분이 자녀들과 계속 연락하길 원하는

many prisoners wanted to stay in contact with their children.

수 많은 재소자들을 돕기 위해 만든 단체입니다.

And so, armed with a few storybooks,

동화책 몇 권을 챙겨

she began to help prisoners to read and record stories

재소자들이 직접 읽는 이야기들을 녹음해

to send home to their children.

자녀들에게 보낼 수 있게 도왔죠.

It wasn't a new idea. Few ideas like this are new.

전에 없던 건 아니지만,

They're great ideas.

정말 좋은 발상이었고,

But it was an instant success.

단숨에 성공을 거뒀습니다.

You may wonder: How does the recording of the stories work in prison?

어떻게 감옥에서 책 읽는 걸 녹음할 수 있는지

Is it difficult for prisoners?

궁금하시죠?

Can it be challenging?

그렇게 힘들까요?

Well, the process of choosing, reading and recording a story

실제로 교도소에서 책을 골라 읽고

can be very challenging for prisoners.

녹음까지 하기는 쉽지 않습니다.

Prison is tough,

냉혹한 교도소에서

and prisoners can't afford to show any signs of weakness or vulnerability.

약한 모습을 보일 순 없지만,

But this, this recording process,

녹음을 하면서,

this can be uncomfortable, upsetting, sometimes all just a bit too much.

거북하고 복잡한 감정을 때론 주체할 수 없기도 합니다.

And prisoners often cry.

재소자들은 보통

They cry because they regret missing out on their children's lives.

아이들과 함께하지 못해 후회하며 웁니다.

They cry because they're ashamed that they've let their families down.

가족들을 실망시킨게 수치스러워 웁니다.

They cry because they don't know how to go about reading to their children.

아이들한테 어떻게 이야기를 들려줄지 몰라 웁니다.

But because when they come to us we offer a private space, one-to-one,

하지만 이 단체에 도움을 청하면

prisoners don't need to be tough anymore,

개인 공간을 제공해 주기 때문에,

and they can use their vulnerability as a strength

약해 보일까봐 숨겨 왔던 감정을 담아 편하게

when contacting with their children.

아이들에게 다가갈 수 있게 됩니다.

I remember one prisoner who came to record.

녹음하려고 온 한 재소자가 기억나네요.

He was a big, hard man with a reputation for being tough.

아주 거칠기로 소문난 거구의 남성이었죠.

He came along as implacable as ever.

아주 매서운 표정을 하고 녹음실로 들어 갔는데,

But when the door of the recording room closed behind him,

그 모습은 문이 닫히자 마자,

that facade began to crumble.

무너지기 시작했습니다.

From his pocket, he took a screwed-up piece of paper

주머니에서 꾸깃한 종이를 꺼내

and quietly began to read the words

조용히 읽기 시작한 건

which he'd written as a message for his two little ones.

두 아이에게 쓴 편지였습니다.

His hands were shaking.

손은 떨고 있었지만,

And then, in a surprisingly quiet voice,

놀라울 정도로 차분한 목소리로

he began to sing their favorite lullaby.

자장가를 부르기 시작했어요.

You see, there wasn't much that he could do from behind bars

아시다시피, 교도소에 갇혀 있으니

to show his children that he missed and loved them.

아이들에게 사랑을 표현할 수 있는 방법이 없지만,

But he could do this.

이것만은 가능했죠.

Once the recording is made,

녹음을 마친 테잎들은

it's sent to the Storybook Dads production unit

'데본'에 있는 채닝스 우드 교도소의

at Channings Wood Prison in Devon.

책 읽어주는 아빠들 제작팀에 전달됩니다.

And that's where I worked.

바로 제가 일했던 곳인데,

I was trained, along with other prisoners,

다른 재소자들과 함께

to edit and produce recordings sent in

영국 전역에서 오는 테잎을

from prisons all over the United Kingdom.

편집하고 제작하는 작업을 배웠죠.

Using audio and video software,

영상 편집 프로그램으로

the recordings have the mistakes taken out

오류를 수정하고,

and sound effects and music added in.

음악과 효과음을 넣기도 했죠.

And the experience and skill which the prison editors gain

이렇게 익힌 기술과 경력은

helps them in their future employment.

출소해 일을 구할 때 도움이 됩니다.

Once the recording is finalized,

그렇게 완성이 되면,

it's transferred to a CD or a DVD and sent out to the families

so that the children can watch them whenever they feel the need.

아이들은 원할 때마다 볼 수 있게 됩니다.

And they listen to these recordings and watch them a lot --

실제로 자주 듣고 보고 하는데,

at bedtime, in the car ...

잠들기 전이나, 차 안에서,

Some even take them to school to show their friends.

심지어 학교에 가져가 친구들에게 보여주기도 합니다.

These recordings,

이 작업으로,

they show the children that they're loved and missed.

아이들은 부모의 사랑을 느끼고,

And they show the prisoner

재소자들은

that they can do something for their child, as a parent.

부모로서 뭔가 할 수 있다는 걸 깨닫게 됩니다.

Do you remember Sophie?

Well, one day, just before Christmas, a parcel arrived,

성탄절을 앞두고 도착한

and this is what was in it.

Charlie: I figure they'd probably look a bit like that snowman's belly.

Santa: They probably would, yeah.

That's a cool snowman, isn't it?

Charlie: It's very cool indeed, I love it.

Santa: They visited all the children in the world

and left presents for each and every one.

In the blink of an eye, they were back in Frogsbottom Field.

눈 깜짝할 사이에, 개굴방댕이 마을로 돌아왔어요.

(Charlie Laughs)

Santa: You think that's well funny?

Charlie: I want to live in Frogsbottom Field!

Alan Crickmore: Sophie and her mum listened to that three times,

and they haven't laughed so much in a long time.

They can see that he's all right, they can see that he loves them,

and the next time he rings, Sophie's got plenty to talk about:

Since it began in 2003, Storybook Dads has grown and grown.

For Sophie's family and for thousands of families like them,

Some prisoners say that it's the first time

that they've begun to build a relationship with their child.

And some poor readers have been so inspired

by what they've been able to achieve

that they've gone to education classes to improve their own reading skills.

Let's go back to the story of "The Ugly Duckling."

"미운 오리 새끼" 얘기로 돌아가 보죠.

But this time, I'd like to play you a recording made by a prisoner,

이번엔 다른 재소자가 녹음한 건데,

because it encapsulates the power of what we do.

이 일이 얼마나 큰 힘을 가지고 있는지 잘 보여줍니다.

The prisoner was an Irish Traveller who couldn't read.

글을 전혀 모르는 아일랜드 사람인데,

And he wanted to send a story home to his daughter for her birthday.

딸 생일 선물로 책을 읽어 주고 싶어 했죠.

With the help of a mentor and some clever editing,

멘토의 도움도 받고 편집도 잘 해

something magical happened.

아주 멋진 작품이 나왔습니다.

This is an extract from the raw recording,

During the winter, he had grown into a beautiful white swan.

The other swans looked at him and thought how beautiful he was.

"Come with us," they said.

"우리랑 같이 지내자"라고 말했고,

And he did.

And that's a pretty common reaction from prisoners,

as they realize for the first time

they've been able to do something for their child

아이들을 위해 뭔가 할 수 있다는 걸

which they never thought they could.

이제 깨닫게 된 거죠.

They've connected in the most fundamental way,

이야기를 들려주는 가장 기본적인 방식으로

through the medium of storytelling.

교감하는 것입니다.

And as for Sophie,

소피가 원하는

she wants "The Gruffalo" next time.

'괴물 그루팔로'로 정했어요.
