I want to talk to you tonight

about the work that makes all other work possible,

about the millions of women who go to work in our homes

매일같이 우리들의 가정으로 출근하는

every single day,

수백만 여성들을 위한 것입니다.

caring for children as nannies,

아이들을 돌보는 유모로,

caring for our loved ones with disabilities and our elders,

장애를 가진 가족과 노인들을 돌보는

as home care workers,

간병인으로,

maintaining sanity in our homes as cleaners.

집안을 깨끗이 하는 청소부로 일하는 분들 말이죠.

It's the work that makes all other work possible.

우리들 삶에 가장 기본이 되는 일들입니다.

And it's mostly done by women, more than 90 percent women,

대부분 여성들의 몫이고, 그 중 90프로 이상이

disproportionately women of color.

유색 인종입니다.

And the work itself is associated with work that women have historically done,

우리 사회에서 전통적으로

work that's been made incredibly invisible

여자들이 하는 일로 여겨지고,

and taken for granted in our culture.

푸대접 받아 왔습니다.

But it's so fundamental to everything else in our world.

우리 삶에 가장 근본적인 일인데 말이죠.

It makes it possible for all of us to go out and do what we do in the world

하루도 빠짐없이, 우리가 밖에서 사회 활동을

every single day,

할 수 있도록 하잖아요.

knowing that the most precious aspects of our lives are in good hands.

삶의 가장 소중한 부분이 잘 관리되고 있기에 가능한 일이죠.

But we don't think about it that way.

하지만 사람들은 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다.

It's almost defined by its invisibility.

대수롭지 않게 여기죠.

You could go into any neighborhood

어디를 가도

and not know which homes are also workplaces.

가정을 일터라고는 생각하지 않습니다.

There's no sign.

간판이나 상호도 없고

There's no list or registry.

사업체로 등록되어 있지도 않으니

It's just invisible.

티가 나지 않는 거죠.

And it's this work that is not even referred to as real work.

제대로 된 일로 인정받지 못하고

It's referred to as "help."

'도우미' 라고 여겨집니다.

It's often seen as unskilled,

특별한 기술이나

not seen as professional.

전문성이 필요 없다는 거죠.

And race has played a profound role in how we value this work in our culture.

인종문제 또한 이런 사회적 인식의 형성에 한몫 해 왔습니다.

Some of the first domestic workers in the United States were black women

미국에 처음 소개된 가사 노동자 중 흑인 여성들은

who were enslaved,

노예들이었고,

and racial exclusion has shaped their conditions for generations.

여러 세대를 거치며 인종적 배제가 자리잡게 됩니다.

In the 1930s, when Congress was discussing the labor laws

1930년대, 미 의회는 노동법에 관한 논의를 합니다.

that would be a part of the New Deal,

뉴딜 정책의 일부로

that would protect all workers,

Southern members of Congress refused to support those labor laws

if they included protections for domestic workers and farmworkers.

That history of racial exclusion

and our cultural devaluing of work that's associated with women

여성들이 하는 일을 평가 절하하는 사회 인식은

now means that millions of women go to work every single day,

매일 수백만의 여성들이 일터로 나가

work incredibly hard

아무리 열심히 일을 해도

and still can't make ends meet.

여전히 생계를 유지하기 힘든 상황을 만들었습니다.

They earn poverty wages without a safety net,

우리와 우리의 가족들을 보살피는 중요한 일을 하지만,

so that the women that we're counting on to take care of us and our families

아무런 사회적 보호도, 최저 생계비도 받지 못하며

can't take care of their own, doing this work.

자신마저 돌보지 못하는 처지가 되고 맙니다.

But my work over the last 20 years has been about changing precisely that.

지난 20년 동안, 저는 이런 상황을 바꾸기 위해 일하고 있습니다.

It's about making these jobs good jobs that you can take pride in

자부심을 갖고, 가족도 부양할 수 있는

and support your family on.

괜찮은 직업으로 만들기 위해서죠.

At the National Domestic Workers Alliance, we've been working hard in states

전국 가사 노동자 연합은 여러 주에서 차별과 성추행을

to pass new laws that will protect domestic workers from discrimination

방지하기 위한 법안을 통과시키기 위해

and sexual harassment,

열심히 노력해 왔습니다.

that will create days of rest, paid time off, even.

휴일과 유급 휴가를 받을 수 있도록 말이죠.

So far, eight states have passed domestic workers bills of rights.

지금까지 8개 주에서 가사 노동자를 위한 법안이 통과됐습니다.

Yes.

그렇습니다.

And during the Obama administration,

오바마 정부 때는

we were successful in bringing two million home care workers

2백만의 간병인들을 위해 최저 임금을 보장하고

under minimum wage and overtime protections

초과 근무 보호 법안까지 통과시켰는데

for the first time since 1937.

1937년 이후 처음이었죠.

Most recently, we've been really excited to launch a new portable benefits platform

최근에는 가사 노동자들을 위한 새로운 이동식 복지혜택 체계인

for domestic workers, called "Alia,"

'알리아'를 소개하면서 다들 아주 흥분된 상태입니다.

which allows for domestic workers with multiple clients

여러 고객을 상대하는 가사 노동자들이

to give them access to benefits for the very first time.

처음으로 복지혜택을 받을 수 있게 된 것입니다.

So really important progress is being made.

정말 엄청난 발전이죠.

But I would argue tonight

하지만 오늘 밤 제가 드릴 이야기는

that one of the most important things that domestic workers can provide

가사 노동자들이 제공하는 가장 중요한 것 중 하나는

is actually what they can teach us

인간다움 그 자체와

about humanity itself

아이들을 위해

and about what it will take to create a more humane world for our children.

좀 더 인간적인 세상을 만드는 가르침을 준다는 사실입니다.

In the face of extreme immorality,

부도덕이 판치는 이 세상에서,

domestic workers can be our moral compass.

가사 노동자들은 우리에게 도덕적 잣대가 되어 줍니다.

And it makes sense,

맞는 말이죠.

because what they do is so fundamental

인간과 인류에게 필요한

to the very basics of human need and humanity.

가장 근본적인 것들을 제공하기 때문입니다.

They are there when we are born into this world;

우리가 태어나기 전에 이미 이 세상에 살고있는 그들은

they shape who we become in this world;

우리가 어떤 사람으로 성장할 것인지 영향을 주게 되고,

and they are with us as we prepare to leave this world.

우리가 이 세상을 떠날 준비를 할 때도 곁에 있으니까요.

And their experiences with families are so varied.

그들이 보살피는 가족들과

They have some relationships with the families that they work for

다양한 경험을 하게 되는데, 아주 긍정적이고,

that are incredibly positive and mutually supportive

서로 힘이 되고, 수년간 지속되는

and last for years and years.

관계를 맺기도 합니다.

And then the opposite also happens.

하지만, 정반대의 상황도 있죠.

And we've seen cases of sexual violence and assault,

성폭력이나 극단적 형태의

of extreme forms of abuse and exploitation.

학대와 착취가 발생하기도 합니다.

We've seen cases of human trafficking.

인신매매를 경험한 적도 있습니다.

Domestic workers live in poor neighborhoods,

가사 노동자들은 가난한 동네에 살면서

and then they go to work in very wealthy ones.

아주 부유한 동네에서 일하게 됩니다.

They cross cultures and generations and borders and boundaries,

문화, 세대, 국경, 경계 등을 넘으며

and their job, no matter what,

무슨 일이 됐건

is to show up and care --

일터로 나서, 우리들을

to nurture, to feed, to clothe, to bathe,

키우고, 먹이고, 입히고, 씻기고,

to listen, to encourage,

얘기를 들어주고, 격려해 주고,

to ensure safety,

보호해 주고,

to support dignity ...

품위를 지켜주는 등

to care no matter what.

다양한 보살핌을 제공합니다.

I want to tell you a story of a woman I met early on in this work.

이 일을 시작한지 얼마 안돼 만났던 한 여성의 이야기를 해 드릴게요.

Her name is Lily.

그녀의 이름은 '릴리'입니다.

Lily and her family lived in Jamaica,

가족들과 함께 살던 자메이카에서

and when she was 15 years old, she was approached by an American couple

15살 때, 한 미국인 부부를 만나게 됩니다.

who were looking for a live-in nanny to come live with them

미국에서 같이 살며

in the United States

아이들을 돌봐줄

and help them care for their children.

유모를 찾고 있었죠.

They offered Lily's family that if she came to work as their nanny,

그들은 릴리가 유모로 일한다면,

she would be able to have access to a US education,

미국에서 교육도 받고,

and she would have a weekly salary sent home to help her family financially.

주급으로 가족들에게 경제적인 도움까지 줄 수 있게 하겠다고 약속했습니다.

They decided it was a good idea

그들은 좋은 기회라고 생각해

and decided to take the opportunity.

그 제안을 받아 들였죠.

Lily held up her end of the bargain

릴리는 책임감을 가지고,

and helped to raise three children.

열심히 세 아이들을 돌봤습니다.

But all communication with her family was severed:

하지만 머지않아, 가족과의 연락이 모두 끊기고

no letters, no phone calls.

편지도, 전화도 할 수 없었죠.

She was never allowed to go to school,

학교도 한 번 못 가보고,

and she was never paid --

돈도 받지 못했죠.

for 15 years.

15년 동안이요.

One day, she saw an article in a newspaper about another domestic worker

릴리는 어느 날, 자신과 아주 비슷한 상황의 가사 노동자에 대한

with a really similar story to hers,

신문 기사를 읽게 됩니다.

another case that I was working on at the time,

당시 제가 관여하던 일이었고,

and she found a way to reach me.

릴리는 저를 찾아 도움을 청했습니다.

She also found a way to reach her brother,

당시 미국에 살고 있던

who was living in the United States at the time as well.

오빠와도 연락할 수 있었죠.

Between the two of us, we were able to help her escape.

둘이 힘을 합쳐, 결국 릴리를 구해 냈는데

And she had the help of one of the children.

그녀가 돌보던 아이들 중 한 명의 도움을 받기도 했습니다.

One of the children was old enough to realize

그 아이는 자신의 유모가

that the way his nanny was being treated was wrong,

부당한 대우를 받고 있다는 사실을 알만큼 성숙했고,

and he gave her the money that he had been saving through his childhood

어릴 때부터 모았던 용돈으로 릴리가 도망칠 수 있도록

to help her escape.

도왔습니다.

But here's the thing about this story.

이 이야기가 충격적인 건

She was essentially enslaved for 15 years.

그녀가 15년 동안이나 노예 생활을 했다는 사실이죠.

Human trafficking and slavery is a criminal offense.

인신 매매나 노예를 부리는 것은 아주 심각한 범죄입니다.

And so her lawyers and I asked Lily,

그래서, 변호사와 저는

did she want to press criminal charges for what had happened to her.

형사 고발을 원하는지 릴리에게 물었죠.

And after thinking about what it would mean,

그녀는 잠시 생각하더니

she said no,

하지 않겠다고 말하더군요.

because she didn't want the children to be separated from their parents.

아이들이 부모와 헤어지는 걸 원하지 않았거든요.

Instead, we filed a civil lawsuit, and we eventually won the case,

대신, 민사 소송을 제기해 결국 승소했고,

and her case became a rallying cry for domestic workers everywhere.

이 사례는 전국에 있는 가사 노동자들에게 큰 용기를 줬습니다.

She was reunited with her family and went on to have a family of her own.

가족들과 재회한 릴리는 지금은 결혼해 가정도 꾸렸습니다.

But the thing that's so profound to me about this story

이 사건이 저를 감동시켰던 것은

is, despite having 15 years stolen from her life,

인생에서 15년이란 세월을 도둑 맞고도

it did not affect the care and compassion that she felt for the children.

아이들에 대한 마음엔 변함이 없었다는 사실입니다.

And I see this from domestic workers all the time.

가사 노동자들에게서 늘 느낄 수 있는 것이죠.

In the face of indignities

우리 사회에서 이런 일들은

and our failure to respect and value this work in our culture,

존중이나 큰 가치도 부여받지도 못 하지만

they still show up,

그들은 일터로 나서고

and they care.

우리들을 보살핍니다.

They're simply too proximate to our shared humanity.

인간의 근본적인 문제들에 가장 밀접해 있는 사람들이죠.

They know how your toddler likes to be held

여러분의 아이들이 낮잠을 자기 전에

as they take their bottle before a nap.

어떻게 젖병을 물려야 하는지,

They know how your mother likes her tea,

치매에 걸린 어머니는 어떻게 끓인 차를 좋아하시는지,

how to make her smile and tell stories despite her dementia.

어떤 얘기가 그들을 미소짓게 하는지 등 모든 걸 알고 있습니다.

They are so proximate to our humanity.

인간의 근본적인 문제들에 가장 밀접해 있는 것이죠.

They know that at the end of the day,

결국 이들은

these are people who are part of families --

한 식구나 다름없다는 사실을 알게 됩니다.

someone's mother,

누군가의 엄마로,

someone's grandmother,

누군가의 할머니로,

someone's best friend

누군가의 가장 좋은 친구로,

and someone's baby;

또 누군가의 자식으로 말이죠.

undeniably human,

엄연한 인간관계이기 때문에

and therefore, not disposable.

쉽게 쓰고 버려질 수 없습니다.

Domestic workers know that any time a single person becomes disposable,

가사 노동자들은 언제든 소모품 취급 당할 걸 알지만,

it's a slippery slope.

어쩔 수 없는 선택을 반복하게 되죠.

You see, the cultural devaluing of domestic work

이와 같은 가사 노동의 평가 절하는

is a reflection of a hierarchy of human value

세상을 규정하는 기준이 되는

that defines everything in our world,

인간 가치의 계층화를 보여줍니다.

a hierarchy that values the lives and contributions

특정 집단의 삶의 방식과 사회 기여도 등을

of some groups of people over others,

규정하는 것이죠.

based on race, gender,

인종, 성별,

class, immigration status --

부류, 이민 상태 등에 따라

any number of categories.

다양하게 분류합니다.

And that hierarchy of human value requires stories about those groups of people

인간의 가치에 계층을 정하고, 그것을 지속하기 위해선

in order to sustain itself.

각 집단만의 고유한 이야기들이 이용되는데

So these stories have seeped deep into our culture

우리 사회 속에 많은 선입견들이 깊이 자리잡게 된 이유죠.

about how some people are less intelligent,

어떤 사람들은 지능이 떨어지고,

some people are less intuitive,

직관적이지 못하고,

weaker,

나약하고,

by extension, less trustworthy,

신뢰할 수 없고,

less valuable

쓸모도 없고,

and ultimately,

결국

less human.

수준 이하라는 말이죠.

And domestic workers know it's a slippery slope

가사 노동자들은 돌이키기 힘든 길이란 사실을 알고 있습니다.

when we start to see a worker as less than a real worker,

제대로 된 일로 인정받지도 못하고,

to a woman as less than a woman,

여성에겐 여성 이하의,

to a mother as less than a mother,

엄마에겐 엄마 이하의,

to a child as less than a child.

아이에겐 아이 이하의 대접을 받기 때문입니다.

In the spring of 2018,

2018년 봄,

the Trump administration announced a new policy at the US-Mexico border,

미국 멕시코 국경 지역에서 트럼프 정부가 밀어부치는

a zero-tolerance policy,

무관용 정책은

to forcibly separate all children from their parents,

국경까지 찾아와 망명을 요청하는 부모들과

who were arriving at the border seeking asylum;

아이들을 격리하겠다는 것입니다.

children as young as 18 months, separated from their parents

안전한 새 삶을 찾아 길고 고된 여정을 거쳐

after a long and arduous journey to reach the US-Mexico border

국경까지 도착한 후 어리게는 18개월 밖에 안된 아이들이

in search of safety and a new beginning.

부모들과 떨어지게 되는 거죠.

Thousands of children separated.

이렇게 수천 명의 아이들이 부모들과 헤어졌고,

And because they were migrants,

이주민이라는 이유로

they were treated as less than children.

기본적인 처우 또한 받지 못했습니다.

In response, I helped to organize the Families Belong Together Vigil

이에 항의하기 위해, 텍사스 맥캘런의 얼설라 국경 순찰 및 수속 센터에서

at the Ursula Border Patrol Processing Center in McAllen, Texas,

'가족은 하나'라는 밤샘 기도 행사를 아버지의 날에 맞춰

on Father's Day.

준비했습니다.

Inside that processing center, there were hundreds of children

수백 명의 아이들이 그 시설 안에서,

who were being held, processed

부모들과 수백 마일 떨어진

and then prepared to be shipped all over country

전국 각지의 수용시설로 보내질

to be jailed in facilities hundreds of miles away from their parents.

수속을 받고 있었거든요.

I saw with my own eyes

제 눈으로 직접,

children not [old] enough for kindergarten

유치원도 가기 전의 어린 아이들이

in unmarked buses,

아무런 표시도 없는 버스에 실려

being shipped off to jails hundreds of miles away.

수백 마일 떨어진 수용소로 실려가는 모습을 보게 됐습니다.

And as they passed us by,

버스가 떠나면서

they reached for us through the windows,

자신들을 위해 밤새 기도했던 저희들을 향해

as we stood vigil to let them know that they are not alone,

아이들은 창 밖으로 손을 뻗쳤고,

and we are fighting for them.

저희는 지금도 그 아이들을 위해 싸우고 있습니다.

Domestic workers came from all over Texas to be a part of the vigil.

텍사스 전역의 가사 노동자들도 동참했는데,

They saw in those families their own family stories.

그곳에 수용된 가족들에게서 자신들의 모습을 봤던 거죠.

They had also come here in search of safety and a new beginning,

그들 또한 가족들을 위해 안전하고 보다 나은 새 삶을 찾아

a better life for their families,

이곳에 오게 됐으니까요.

and they saw in the eyes of those children

그 아이들의 눈에서

their own children.

자신들의 아이들을 봤던 것입니다.

And through our tears,

저흰 함께 눈물을 흘리며

we looked at each other and we asked each other,

서로를 바라보며 말했어요.

"How did we get here,

"어떻게 어린 아이들을

to putting children in cages

우리에 가두고

and separating them from the people who love them the most in the world?"

세상에서 가장 사랑하는 사람들과 헤어지게 하는 지경까지 왔을까요?

How?

도대체 어떻게?"

And what I thought to myself was: if domestic workers were in charge,

가사 노동자들에게 힘이 있다면 이런 일은 절대 없었을 거라고

this never would have happened.

전 생각했습니다.

Our humanity would never have been so disposable

아이들에게까지 이렇게 할 정도로

that we would be treating children in this way.

인간이 소모품처럼 취급된 적은 없습니다.

The Dalai Lama once said that love and compassion are necessities,

달라이 라마는 사랑과 애정은 사치가 아닌

not luxuries.

필수라고 말했죠.

Without them, humanity cannot survive.

사랑과 애정 없이 인류는 생존할 수 없습니다.

In other words, they are fundamental to human existence.

다시 말해, 사랑과 애정은 인간이란 존재에 필수적인 것입니다.

Domestic workers are in charge of the fundamentals.

이런 근본적인 문제들을 가사 노동자들이 책임지고 있죠.

They love and they care,

사랑을 나누고, 보살피며

and they show compassion no matter what.

어느 상황에서건 애정을 쏟습니다.

We live in a time of moral choices

도덕적 선택이 요구되는 시대입니다.

everywhere we turn:

어디를 가든,

at the border,

국경 지역,

at the ballot box,

투표소,

in our workplaces,

직장,

right in our homes, full of moral choices.

가정에서도 끊임없이,

As you go about your day and you encounter these moral choices,

하루 하루 살면서 도덕적 선택의 순간을 마주하게 됩니다.

think of Lily.

릴리를 생각해 보세요.

Think like Lily.

릴리처럼 생각해 보세요.

Think like a domestic worker who shows up and cares no matter what.

어느 상황에서건 우리들을 보살펴 주는 가사 노동자들처럼 생각해보세요.

Love and compassion, no matter what.

조건없는 사랑과 애정입니다.

Show up like a domestic worker,

가사 노동자처럼 자리를 지키세요.

because our children are counting on us.

아이들이 우리를 필요로 하니까요.
