I'm a total wildlife nerd.

But I’m also a career technologist,

and it took me 20 years to figure out how to combine the two

towards wildlife conservation.

But I think I finally got it.

Technology has come so far in that time in generating data

그동안 기술이 발전해서

지구와 그 서식 동물에 대한 자료가 많아졌습니다.

about our planet and its other non-human inhabitants.

For example, there's a satellite in space

예를 들어 우주 위성으로

that's dedicated to tracking the movements of hundreds of species.

동물 수백 종의 이동을 추적할 수 있고

We can pluck DNA samples from rivers, soil and dung

강물과 토양, 배설물에서 DNA 표본을 채취해

to identify individual animals.

개체를 식별할 수 있죠.

And whales and seals are swimming around right now with sensors on,

지금 이 순간에도 고래와 물개는 감지 장치를 달고 헤엄치며

collecting ocean data for us.

해양 자료를 모아주고 있습니다.

Now, this data is incredibly valuable to the science of protecting the planet.

But I think it could be even more valuable.

What if we use that data to give wild animals

이 자료를 이용해 야생 동물에게

a unique digital identity that's recognizable by humans?

Now why would we do this?

왜 그렇게 할까요?

Well, most of us have a digital identity that we use to communicate

인간은 대부분 디지털 신분이 있어서

그걸로 교류하고 서로 사귈 수 있죠.

and socialize with each other.

But Albert in St. Louis, for example,

하지만 세인트루이스에 사는 사람이

has no way to create a connection with an orangutan in Borneo.

보르네오에 사는 오랑우탄과 연결되기는 불가능합니다.

How can we expect him to empathize with its protection?

오랑우탄을 보호해야 한다고 생각하게 만들 수 있을까요?

If we want to preserve all life on Earth,

지구의 모든 생물을 보호하려면

we need to create relationships with all life on Earth.

지구의 모든 생물과 관계를 맺어야 합니다.

And relationships are built upon recognizing someone's unique identity.

누군가와 관계를 맺으려면 상대의 고유한 정체를 알아야 하죠.

오랑우탄에게 인격을 부여하면 사람과 사귈 수 있고

So maybe giving one to that orangutan could create a bond with Albert

that helps them both in the real world.

이 관계는 현실 세계에서 양쪽을 모두 돕습니다.

Now, this is not as far-fetched as it seems.

터무니없는 얘기 같겠지만

The technology and the data exist to do it.

지금 있는 기술과 자료로 충분히 할 수 있습니다.

그런데 인격만 부여하면 되는 게 아니라

But it's not enough to just create the identities.

They need a place to come alive and be found by humans.

인간과 어울리며 살 수 있는 공간도 마련해 줘야 합니다.

Somewhere that creates an immersive and active way

실감 나는 환경에서 활기차게 살면서

계속 연결될 수 있는 그런 공간 말입니다.

to stay engaged.

Well, if current predictions come true,

현재 예측이 맞는다면

most of our socializing, work and play will shift to games,

우리가 생활하고 일하고 노는 공간은 대부분 옮겨갈 것입니다.

게임이나 가상 공간, 그리고...

virtual spaces and yes, the metaverse.

네, 메타버스로요.

And that's where stories will be told and relationships built.

그곳에서 이야기가 생겨나고 관계가 만들어질 것입니다.

So for every human avatar

이 공간에서 교류하고 먹고 마시는 가상 인간처럼

that is interacting or consuming in these spaces,

let’s have the same for Mweituria the elephant,

코끼리 므이츄리아도

Ataia the Jaguar, Fio the orangutan

재규어 아샤이아도, 오랑우탄 피오도

and hundreds of thousands more.

그리고 그 외 수많은 동물도 그렇게 해주면 어떨까요?

And the events of their lives, as supported by the data,

자료에 근거해서 동물들의 생활사를

can be recreated digitally.

디지털 방식으로 공유할 수 있습니다.

That might be the health of Fio,

예를 들어 피오가 건강하게 잘 있는지

the migration of Mweituria,

므이츄리아는 어디로 이동하는지

a newborn cub to Ataia.

아샤이아가 새끼를 낳았는지 다 볼 수 있죠.

And these events, and others,

이렇게 동물 생애의 여러 가지 사건을 지켜보면서

create the moments

사람들은 동물과 연결된 공간에서 정서적 유대감을 느낄 것입니다.

for people to feel the space to feel emotionally bonded.

Not because they all of a sudden want to,

사람들이 갑자기 그러고 싶어진 게 아니고

but because they now have access that they never did before.

예전에 없던 새로운 방식으로 이어져 있기 때문입니다.

Some will use that space to connect directly

어떤 사람들은 이 가상 세계에서

with orangutan researchers in Borneo.

보르네오의 오랑우탄 연구자와 직접 만날 것입니다.

Others will identify new patterns in elephant movements.

다른 사람은 코끼리의 이동 방식을 새로 알아낼 수도 있고

Some will learn about deforestation by actually witnessing it.

숲이 파괴되는 모습을 직접 보고 알게 되는 사람들도 생길 겁니다.

And we’ll monetize this soon-to-be-trillion-dollar sector

우리는 곧 일조 달러에 이를 이 공간을 상업화해서

to help finance further science and habitat protection.

과학 발전과 서식지 보호를 경제적으로 도울 수 있습니다.

Which means that virtual worlds can directly benefit the real world

가상 세계가 현실 세계와 동떨어진 게 아니라

오히려 직접적 이득을 줄 수 있다는 뜻입니다.

as opposed to being detached from it.

And we've been experimenting with this

우리는 피오와 다른 동물들의 실제 자료를 사용하여

using the real data of animals like Fio and others.

And we found that

그리고 우리의 꿈이 실현되려면 앞으로 수년 더 걸리겠지만

while our vision is still many years away from being realized,

the platforms to make it happen already exist.

Microsoft's Flight Simulator,

it includes two trillion of the world's trees.

It could include all the world's wildlife.

전 세계 야생 동물을 거기에 넣을 수 있을 겁니다.

아디다스는 최근 자사 운동 앱에 위치 추적되는 동물 다섯 마리를 넣어

Adidas recently included five GPS-tracked animals as athletes in its fitness app

앱을 사용하는 사람들이 동물 선수들과 경쟁하게 했죠.

for its users to compete against.

It could include thousands more.

여기에 수천 마리를 더 포함할 수 있을 겁니다.

And Fortnite recently held a virtual concert ... with Travis Scott.

그리고 포트나이트는 최근 트래비스 스콧과 가상 콘서트를 열었죠.

They transported over 27 million of their users

이천칠백만이 넘는 사용자가 가상 세계로 이동해

to a fictional world to witness that concert.

콘서트를 즐겼습니다.

Let's hold the next one in the Amazon rainforest.

다음은 아마존 열대우림에서 하죠.

Imagine if Ataia the Jaguar walks by during the show.

재규어 아샤이아가 콘서트장에 들어오는 걸 상상해보세요.

Now, I'll admit I have fears that some of what I'm advocating

제가 이렇게 내세우는 것들 중 일부는

어쩌면 인간과 자연 사이를

could create a greater divide between people and the natural world.

오히려 더 갈라놓게 될까 봐 걱정되기도 합니다.

If I could, I'd just pick everybody up,

할 수만 있다면, 모든 사람들을 통째로 들어서

I’d plop them in Borneo, and I’d have them spend an hour with Fio instead.

보르네오섬에 갖다 놓고 피오와 한 시간 동안 놀게 할 겁니다.

But Fio's natural world is literally dying in front of our eyes.

하지만 피오의 자연 세계는 글자 그대로 우리 눈앞에서 사라지고 있어요.

We need a seismic shift in how we create relationships with other species.

다른 동물들과 관계 맺는 방식을 근본적으로 바꿔야 합니다.

Otherwise, yeah, the next 100 years of wildlife conservation

그러지 않으면 앞으로 백 년간 야생 동물 보존 활동은

will continue to be an uphill, losing battle.

어려운 일이 되고 실패를 거듭하겠죠.

It's only a matter of time before some version of the metaverse

우리가 생활하고 교류하는 방식이

changes the way we spend our time and engage with each other.

몇 가지 메타버스로 바뀌는 건 이제 시간 문제일 뿐입니다.

And however you may feel about that,

이에 대해 어떻게 느끼든

we have to make sure that Mweituria, Ataia, Fio

우리는 반드시 므이츄리아, 아샤이아, 피오

and millions more animals are included,

그리고 더 많은 동물을 이 세계에 포함해서

play a role and benefit.

자기 역할을 하고 혜택을 받게 해줘야 합니다.

And not get left behind.

아무도 소외되지 않게요.
