About six months into my career as a therapist,

Anne's a transgender female, and as her and I started talking,

she was sharing with me about what brought her into treatment,

but I could hear this fear in her voice,

She then told me about this ongoing pain that she has experienced her whole life

And what she meant by that is, when she was born,

and based on her genitalia said,

Many years passed and the feelings that she was feeling

So Anne then found herself on the streets and in and out of homeless shelters,

You see, when I was studying to become a therapist,

But the more I worked with Anne and other patients like Anne,

caused so many of these patients to turn to alcohol and drugs.

Now let me tell you about Leah.

I had the pleasure of meeting Leah a few years back.

She's a female and she has a wife and a child.

See, Leah was also assigned male at birth

She couldn't believe it.

If her doctor treated her this way, how would the rest of the world treat her?

First, he wouldn't shake her hand,

See, I can understand where Leah's coming from,

As this community expands and grows older,

it is imperative that all health care providers be trained

Back in 2015, a survey was done

I want to offer a new way of thinking for three groups of people:

doctors, the transgender community and, well, the rest of us.

But before we do, I want to cover a couple of definitions

So let's start out with this idea of a binary system.

And what this means is,

before, we always thought there was only two, male and female.

Get it? Binary? Right?

So we've come to find out that this isn't true.

Gender identity is a spectrum

include identities such as gender-nonconforming,

as well as people that are intersex.

The term transgender is this umbrella term

that encompasses all these different types of identities.

But for today's talk, I want you to think about transgender

as someone who is assigned a sex at birth that doesn't match

with who they are as a person and their sense of self.

Now, this is very different than biological sex.

So gender identity is sense of self.

This is very different than biological sex, right?

Now, you may be thinking, "Dr. Kristie, I have never questioned who I am.

It's important to know that there are many different types of identities,

and I identify as a cisgender female.

Now, for all y'all out there that like to know how to spell things,

cis is spelled "c-i-s."

It's the Latin term for "on the same side of."

When I was born,

the doctor held me up to my parents and said,

"It's a girl."

All this, based on my genitalia.

Even though I grew up in a small farm town in Georgia,

Now, this is very different than someone who's transgender.

Now, trans is a Latin term for "on the other side of" --

someone that's assigned a sex at birth

A transgender male is someone who was assigned female at birth,

And the opposite is, as we talked earlier,

It's also important to point out here

identifies with the term "transgender."

Just so nobody gets confused, I want to point out sexual identity,

or orientation.

That is simply who we're attracted to,

physically, emotionally, sexually, spiritually.

It's got nothing to do with gender identity.

So just for a quick recap, before we continue on:

Three very different identity spectrums.

Now, the average medical student

spends about five hours learning about the LGBT health-related needs

Now, this is despite us knowing that there are unique health risks

Many doctors don't feel comfortable asking about gender identities.

Some don't feel like it's relevant at all to their medical care

and others just don't want to say the wrong thing.

Many doctors who say something inappropriate

they may not be coming from a malicious or mean place,

what happens when this transgender male goes for their yearly gynecological visit?

How that doctor treats that patient

will set the whole tone for the office.

If that doctor treats that male with the correct pronouns, correct name,

gives dignity and respect,

it's highly likely that the rest of the staff will too.

So that's a little bit about my thoughts on doctors,

and now let's move on to the transgender community.

I'm here talking about fear,

but y'all know who is really fearful, right?

Earlier I shared the story about Anne

A lot of y'all, maybe in the next week or a couple of months,

So let's say you go to your doctor's appointment

That's what happens for many of the 1.4 million transgender adults

I'm not transgender. I don't know anybody that's transgender.

난 성전환자도 아니고 아는 성전환자도 없는데.

Why should I even care?"

내가 왜 그걸 신경써야하지?"

Think of it this way.

이런 식으로 생각하실 수 있습니다.

A transgender individual is human,

성전환자도 하나의 인간입니다.

just like you and me.

여러분들과 저와 똑같습니다.

They deserve competent and trained health care providers,

이들은 여러분이나 저처럼 능숙하고 올바른 훈련을 받은

just like you and me.

의료계 종사자들에게 진료받을 자격이 있습니다.

So let me ask, if you don't mind raising your hand:

Do you know or have you met anyone who is transgender,

gender-nonconforming, agender, intersex, two-spirited, three-spirited?

좀 전에 말씀드린 성정체성을

someone that falls into one of these identities, I guarantee it.

가진 누군가를 만나실 것입니다. 제가 보장합니다.

The number of this community is increasing.

이러한 집단은 그 수가 계속해서 증가하고 있습니다.

That's not because it's a fad or the new thing to do.

이는 어떤 일시적인 유행이나 새롭게 생겨난 현상이 아닙니다.

It's safer to come out.

양성화 되어야 더 안전합니다.

There's more awareness. There's more visibility.

이에 대한 인식이 개선되고 있고 또 가시화 되고 있습니다.

There's more safety, so people are speaking up about their true self

더욱 안전해 지고 있고, 이에 따라 사람들이 전례없이 스스로를

like never before.

솔직하게 소리 높여 드러내고 있습니다.

That's why it's so important that our health care system get on board

이것이 우리 의료 시스템과 의사, 의료계 종사자가 이러한 환자들도

and make sure that our doctors and health care providers are trained

우리 모두가 기대하는 바와 같이, 존엄성과 존중을 바탕으로

to approach these patients with dignity and respect,

대할 수 있도록 훈련받고 시스템을 개선 해 나가는 일을 매우 중요하게

just like we expect.

여겨야 하는 이유입니다.

I remember being in my 11th grade literature class,

제 기억 속 11학년 문학 수업에서

with one of my favorite teachers, Mr. McClain,

제가 가장 좋아하는 선생님 중 한 분이었던, 맥클레인 선생님이

and he shared this quote by Heraclitus that sticks with me to this day.

보여 주셨던 헤라클레이토스의 구절이 아직까지도 제게 남아 있습니다.

Y'all may have even heard it.

여러분들도 들어보셨을 겁니다.

It's, "The only thing that is constant is that things will change."

"변하지 않는 유일한 것은 모든 것은 변한다는 사실 뿐이다." 입니다.

Familiar, right?

익숙하시죠, 그렇죠?

Every single one of us face changes in our lives,

우리 모두 개개인은 살아가면서 변화를 맞이하고

and often when we're faced with these changes,

종종 이러한 변화를 만났을 때

we've got some difficult decisions to make.

어느 쪽을 결정할지 어려움을 겪곤 합니다.

Will we remain in fear, stay stuck

여러분들은 두려움 속에 가로막혀

and not grow?

성장하지 않는 삶을 원하시나요?

Or, will we face fear with bravery,

아니면, 용기있게 그 두려움에 맞서

evolve, take the opportunity to grow?

진화하고, 성장의 기회를 얻고자 하시나요?

Every one of us face new things.

우리 모두는 새로움을 접합니다.

What will you do?

여러분들은 어떻게 하고 싶으신가요?

Will you remain in fear,

두려움 속에 머무르실 건가요.

or will you grow?

성장하고 싶으신가요?

to face fear together

두려움에 함께 맞서길 제안합니다.
