and it becomes a whole thing.

I have a question for you this morning.

오늘 여러분에게 드릴 질문이 있습니다.

What is this?

이게 뭘까요?

You can have -- a box, yeah.

네, 바로 상자입니다.

I ask a lot of people that question,

제가 많은 사람들에게 이 질문을 하는데

and most people say it's a box.

대다수가 상자라고 합니다.

But I've met a small group of people who have told me that this is not a box.

하지만 상자가 아니라고 하는 소수의 사람들을 만난 적이 있습니다.

And what's fascinating about this group of people

이런 사람들의 매력적인 점은

is they're the ones that have pioneered space travel,

이들이 우주 여행을 개척하고

explored the depths of our oceans

깊은 바다속을 탐험하고

and created some of the most impenetrable fortresses,

가장 강력한 요새들을 만든 사람들이라는 것입니다.

all before the age of five.

그것도 다섯 살 이전에요.

Of course, I'm talking about my kids.

당연히 제 아이들을 말하는 것입니다.

See, when I showed them this,

아이들에게 이것을 보여줬을 때

they told me that this was not a box,

이것은 상자가 아니라

but rather a rocket ship,

오히려 우주선,

a submarine and a castle all at once, somehow combined.

동시에 잠수함과 성이 어쨌든 합쳐진 것이라고 해요.

So why is it that you and I, as adults,

하지만 왜 어른인 여러분과 저는

we look at something like this and we just call it what it is, a box.

이런 것을 보고 그저 상자라고 할까요.

But our children, they can see it for more possibilities.

우리의 아이들은 수많은 것들로 볼 수 있지만요.

Over the past decade as a filmmaker,

영화 제작자로서 지난 10년간

I've been on a quest to see with this childlike wonder again.

이런 동심을 되찾기 위한 미션을 떠났습니다.

So now when I see something such as a pool table,

그래서 저는 이제 당구대를 보면

well, I see an entirely different type of pool.

아예 다른 수영장이 보입니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I no longer see a little soccer ball here.

저는 더이상 여기에 작은 축구공이 보이지 않습니다.

It's actually got some life to it, it's a little Dalmatian puppy.

생맹력을 불어 넣어 작은 달마시안 강아지가 보입니다.

I no longer see the glass as half empty.

더이상 이 유리잔도 반이 비었다고 보지 않죠.

In fact, I don't even see a glass at all.

사실 아예 유리잔 자체로도 보지 않습니다.

For me, it's actually a tasty piece of chocolate cake.

저에겐 맛있는 초콜렛 케이크입니다.

(Murmurs and laughter)

(소근거림과 웃음)

See, you and I can still access this childlike wonder.

여러분과 저는 이런 동심을 여전히 가질 수 있습니다.

We can still see and dream with this wonder,

여전히 놀라움을 갖고 바라 보고 꿈꿀 수 있습니다.

although it may have been a while since we've experienced it.

그런 경험을 한 지 시간이 지났을지라도요.

So today what I want to do for you

제가 오늘 여러분을 위해 하고 싶은 것은

is have you regain your sense of childlike wonder

바로 여러분의 동심을 되찾는 것입니다.

and show you how to do that.

방법도 알려줄게요.

So, if you will,

여러분들을 위해

I want to tell you a story,

이야기를 하나 해주고 싶습니다.

and I invite you to imagine with me

저와 함께 상상해 보세요.

that one Christmas, a box just like this is wrapped

어느 크리스마스날 이런 상자가 포장된 채

and placed under a tree.

트리 밑에 놓여있습니다.

And an excited little boy comes running down the stairs

그리고 신난 남자 아이가 계단에서 뛰어 내려옵니다.

on Christmas morning

크리스마스 아침에

and he unwraps the box and inside is a bike.

아이는 상자를 뜯어 보니 안에는 자전거가 있습니다.

And although he rides the bike for a few moments around the room,

거실에서 자전거를 조금 타보지만

he ends up playing with the box instead.

결국 아이는 상자를 갖고 놀게 됩니다.

Because to him it's a deep, dark cave.

왜냐면 그에게 이것은 깊고 어두운 동굴이거든요.

Hello.

안녕하세요.

(Echoes)

(메아리)

And at the bottom of that cave

그리고 동굴 바닥에는

is an X marks the spot.

And of course, he's the best pirate on the seas,

so he's going to dig for buried treasure.

It's a lot of work digging for treasure.

And that's when he discovered ...

바로 그때 아이는 알게됩니다.

That he -- (Screams)

Whoa.

우와

That he was not the first pirate to look for this treasure.

이 보물을 찾으려고 한 첫 해적이 아님을요.

But that boy had many adventures with this box over the years.

하지만 남자 아이는 이 상자로 몇 년간 많은 모험을 떠났습니다.

Once, it was his time machine

한번은 타임머신이었습니다.

that took him back to the age of the dinosaurs.

아이를 공룡시대로 데리고 갔죠.

(Dinosaur screeching)

(공룡 소리)

Oh!

오!

Another time it was actually his bunker to hide from the zombie apocalypse.

또 한번은 좀비를 피하기 위한 벙커였습니다.

(Screaming)

(비명소리)

And once he even dreamed that it was a submarine

언제는 또 깊은 바다 속으로 데려다주는

that took him to the depths of the ocean

잠수함이라고 꿈꿨습니다.

until he could no longer hold his breath.

숨이 찰 때까지 말이죠.

(Water splashing)

(물 소리)

But one day, the boy couldn't find the box.

하지만 어느 날 그 아이는 상자를 찾지 못했습니다.

He looked in his room.

자신의 방도 찾아보고

He searched the backyard.

뒷마당도 찾아봤죠.

And then he found it in the garage.

그리고 상자가 차고에 있던 것을 알아냅니다.

And when he ran to go play with it,

상자를 갖고 놀려고 달려가서

he opened it up.

그것을 열어봤더니

And inside were winter jackets.

겨울 점퍼가 안에 있었습니다.

And this was the day that the boy learned

그리고 이 날이 아이가

what the box was actually made to do.

상자의 진짜 쓰임새를 알게 된 날입니다.

To store things.

물건을 담는 용도 말이죠.

Now the box is just a regular box.

이제 상자는 단순한 상자에 불과합니다.

The boy ended up packing up his things to go to college in that box

아이는 결국 그 상자에 대학에 가기 위한 물건을 담았습니다.

a couple of years later.

몇 년 후에

Soon after that, he used that box

그는 상자를

to move to his first home when he got married.

결혼을 하고 그의 첫 집에 이사가기 위해 사용했습니다.

And then after that, to make room for the baby,

그 이후에는 아기의 방을 만들기 위해

he packed some of his film gear in this box,

상자에 촬영 장비를 넣어 놓고

placed it in the top shelf of his garage,

차고 맨 위에 올려놨습니다.

where it sat for a while collecting dust.

머지 않아 먼지가 쌓였죠.

See, I was that boy

보세요, 제가 그 아이였고

and I'm embarrassed to admit that that box sat on the top shelf of the garage

차고 맨 위의 상자로 그 이후에도 꿈을 꾸지 않았다는 것을

for many more years after that, not being dreamed with.

인정하기 부끄럽습니다.

So, one night I heard a sound.

어느 날 밤, 어떤 소리가 들렸습니다.

(Crashing)

(요란한 소리)

It was coming from the garage and I thought someone was breaking in,

차고에서 난 소리였고 전 누군가가 침입하는 줄 알았습니다.

so I went to go check it out.

그래서 한번 확인해보려고 갔죠.

To my surprise, the box was on the ground,

놀랍게도 상자가 바닥에 있었습니다.

and my kids were dreaming with the box.

제 아이들이 상자를 갖고 꿈을 꾸고 있었어요.

(Kids laugh)

(어린이 웃음소리)

And they said, “Daddy, we’re playing rocket ship.

그리고 아이들이 “아빠, 우리 우주선 놀이하고 있어요.

Come play with us.”

같이 놀아요.” 라고 말했습니다.

It had been a while since I played with the box,

상자와 논지 시간이 좀 지났었지만

but I fired on the engine for them.

아이들을 위해 엔진에 시동을 걸어주었습니다.

Sure enough,

엔진은 이 정도면 됐네요.

after all these years, she still ran and we headed into space.

많은 시간이 지났음에도 우주선은 작동이 되었고 우리는 우주로 향했습니다.

Houston, we're ready for liftoff.

휴스턴, 발사 준비 완료.

(Rocket lifts off)

(로켓 발사 소리)

We ended up going just a little past Jupiter,

우리는 목성을 조금 지나 멈췄습니다.

where we met some friendly space aliens who taught us a really cool sport

그곳에서 굉장히 멋진 스포츠를 알려준 친절한 외계인들을 만났습니다.

that I want to show you, called space soccer.

‘우주 축구’라고 하는 것인데 여려분들에게 보여주고 싶습니다.

It's a really slow sport, requires a lot of yoga.

굉장히 느린 스포츠이고 많이 유연해야 합니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But it is more fun than golf.

그래도 골프보단 재밌어요.

So.

그래서

It was there in that garage

바로 그 차고 안에서

that I learned the key to why all our kids see with childlike wonder.

제가 왜 모든 아이들이 상상력 가득한 동심으로 세상을 보는지 배웠습니다.

It's because they don't have assumptions.

그것은 아이들은 가정을 하지 않기 때문입니다.

They don't have assumptions about the box yet.

그들은 아직 상자에 대한 가정이 없습니다.

They haven't been told what it's supposed to do

아직 상자로 무엇을 해야 할지 알지 못하거나

or what it's supposed to be used for.

상자가 무슨 용도인지 모릅니다.

Therefore, they have all these other possibilities.

이것 때문에 그들에게 상자가 무한한 가능성을 가지고 있는 것입니다.

So for you and I,

저와 여러분에게

as we approach life and try to solve new problems,

우리가 삶을 살아가고 새로운 문제를 해결하려고 할 때마다

if we're able to remove our assumptions for a moment,

잠시 우리의 가정을 버릴 수 있으면

we can see with this new childlike wonder once again.

다시 동심으로 세상을 볼 수 있다는 것을 말해주고 싶습니다.

So I want to test this out and see if this worked,

이것이 효과가 있는지

if this experience regained a little sense of your wonder.

So I’m going to throw up my desktop image on the screen

and I want you to hold back your assumptions.

So on the desktop screen,

you might have a few assumptions that you can't hold back,

여러분들이 어쩔 수 없이 가정을 가질 만한 부분이 있을 수 있습니다.

you're looking at it going, I'm really disorganized,

보고 있으면 제가 체계적이지 못하거나

or you’re assuming that I’ve got too many projects going on,

너무 많은 프로젝트를 하고 있다는 것을 가정할 수 있습니다.

and both of those are true.

그리고 둘 다 사실이고요.

But I want us to look a little deeper to see the possibility.

하지만 저는 다른 가능성을 보기 위해 조금 더 깊이 들여다 보기를 원합니다.

So let me help clear the way here.

I was actually looking at the background.

maybe it's something else entirely.

So the next time somebody tells you to think outside the box,

you can tell them,

Because when we remove our assumptions,

we're able to then see with this childlike sense of wonder.

And that's the moment when new ideas can enter the world.
