I started life as a fashion designer,

Fifteen years ago,

15년 전

I completely changed both what I worked with

어느 생물학자와의 공동 작업을 통해

and how I worked

큰 깨달음을 얻고

after a revelatory collaboration with a biologist.

일의 소재와 방법을 전면적으로 바꾸었습니다.

Our project gave me a different perspective on life,

introducing a whole new world of possibility

디자인과 제작 과정의 새로운 가능성을 보여주는

around how we can design and make things.

세상을 만나게 되었죠.

I discovered a radical manufacturing proposition:

아주 급진적인 제조법을 알게 되었어요.

biofabrication.

바로 바이오 제조법입니다.

Literally, fabricating with biology.

말 그대로 생물학을 이용한 제조법이에요.

What does that mean?

그게 무슨 뜻일까요?

Well, instead of processing plants, animals or oil

식물이나 동물, 기름을 가공해

to make consumer materials,

소재를 만드는 대신

we might grow materials directly with living organisms.

살아 있는 유기체에서 바로 소재를 기르는 방법이에요.

In what many are terming "the Fourth Industrial Revolution,"

많은 이가 말하는 '4차 산업 혁명'에서는

we're thinking about the new factories as being living cells.

살아 있는 세포를 새 공장으로 간주합니다.

Bacteria, algae, fungi, yeast:

박테리아, 조류, 균류, 효모 등

our latest design tools include those of biotechnology.

새로운 디자인 도구는 생물공학의 도구를 아우릅니다.

My own journey in biofabrication

전 '바이오쿠튀르'라는 프로젝트로

started with a project called "Biocouture."

이 세계에 발을 들였습니다.

The provocation was that instead of growing a plant, like cotton,

목화처럼 몇 달간 밭에서 식물을 재배하는 대신

in a field over several months,

실험실에서 미생물을 배양해

we could use microbes to grow a similar cellulose material in a lab

단 며칠 만에 비슷한 섬유 재질을 기르는

흥미로운 실험이었죠.

in a few days.

Using a certain species of bacteria in a nutrient-rich liquid,

영양분이 풍부한 용액에 특정 박테리아를 배양하였고

we fermented threads of cellulose

거기서 나온 섬유 가닥이

that self-organized into a sheet of fabric.

유기적으로 한 장의 직물을 만들어냈습니다.

I dried the fabric I had grown

이렇게 배양한 직물을 잘 말려서

and cut and sewed it into a range of garments, shoes and bags.

자르고 꿰매 옷과 신발, 가방을 만들었어요.

In other words, in one lab we grew materials

다르게 설명하자면 한 곳의 실험실에서

and turned them into a range of products

재료의 배양과 다양한 상품 제작까지

in a matter of days.

단 며칠 만에 이룬 겁니다.

And this is in contrast to currents methods of fabric production,

기존의 직물 제조 과정과 무척 대비되는 과정이죠.

where a plant is grown,

지금은 식물을 재배해서

just the cotton part is harvested,

목화솜만 떼어낸 후

processed into a yarn,

거기서 실을 뽑아

woven into a fabric

면직물을 만들고

and then potentially shipped across oceans

이를 세계 곳곳으로 보내

before being cut and sewn into a garment.

자르고 꿰매어 옷으로 만듭니다.

All of that can take months.

몇 달이 걸리는 과정이에요.

So these prototypes indicated a field

이런 원형을 통해 자원 효율성을 획기적으로 높일 분야를

offering significant resource efficiencies.

발견할 수 있었습니다.

From reducing the water, energy and chemistry needed

원료 제작 과정에 필요한

물과 에너지 및 화학 약품을 줄여

in the production of a material,

through to generating zero waste,

폐기물 발생을 억제하는 과정으로

we grew fabrics to finished form --

완성품을 길러내는 겁니다.

if you like, "biological additive manufacture."

'생물학적 첨가물 제조법' 이라고나 할까요.

Through biofabrication,

바이오 제조법을 통해

I had replaced many intensive man-made steps

엄청난 인력이 동원되는 여러 과정을 하나의 생물학적 단계로

with one biological step.

줄일 수 있었습니다.

And as I engaged with this living system,

이 체계를 알게 됨으로써

it transformed my design thinking.

디자인에 관한 제 생각도 바뀌었죠.

Here was biology, with no intervention from me

배양을 위한 초기 설정을 제외하고는

other than designing initial conditions for growth,

제가 전혀 개입하지 않아도 생물의 작용만으로

efficiently producing a useful, sustainable material.

유용하고 지속 가능한 물질이 효율적으로 생산됩니다.

So now I can't help but see all materials through the lens of biofabrication.

그래서 이제 전 모든 재료를 바이오 제조의 시각으로 봅니다.

In fact, there's a growing global community of innovators

원료와 생물학을 접목시켜 생각하는

rethinking materials with biology.

혁신적 발상을 하는 이들이 점점 늘어나고 있어요.

Multiple companies are now growing mushroom materials,

버섯 원료를 기르는 회사도 늘어나고 있죠.

but not literally mushrooms --

진짜 버섯이 아니라

using mycelium, which is the root system of fungi,

균류의 기반이 되는 균사체를 이용해

to bind together agricultural byproducts.

농업 부산물의 결합 방법을 연구하는 회사들입니다.

It's a process that's been described as "nature's glue."

'자연 접착제'라고 부르는 과정이에요.

A common way to do this is to take a 3-D mold,

이 방법은 주로 3D로 만든 틀을 씁니다.

fill it with a waste crop like corn stalks or hemp,

옥수수나 대마 줄기 등 버리는 부산물로 틀을 채우고

add water,

물을 넣은 후

wait a few days for the mycelium to grow throughout,

균사체가 완전히 자랄 때까지 며칠 기다렸다가

remove the mold,

틀에서 제거하면

and you're left with a grown 3-D form.

틀의 모양대로 형태가 완성되죠.

Incredibly, we can grow all kinds of structures

살아 있는 유기체로 만들 수 있는 구조는

using living organisms,

놀라울 만큼 다양합니다.

from foams that can replace plastics in footwear,

신발에 쓰이는 플라스틱을 대체할 폼 재질부터

to leather-like materials without animals.

동물을 희생하지 않는 가죽을 생산하고

Furniture, flooring -- all are currently being prototyped.

가구와 바닥 재료까지 모든 게 실험 대상입니다.

Fungi are able to grow materials that are naturally fire retardant,

균사체는 화학 약품 없이도 자연스럽게 불에 강한 물질을

without any chemicals.

They're naturally hydrophobic,

meaning they won't absorb water.

수분을 흡수하지도 않죠.

They have higher melt temperatures than plastics.

Polystyrene can take thousands of years to degrade.

Mushroom packaging materials

균류로 만든 포장 용기는

can be naturally composted in your back garden

in as little as 30 days.

고작 30일 안에 분해됩니다.

Living organisms are transforming waste

생명 유기체는 폐기물을 변형해 가격 경쟁력은 물론

into cost-competitive, performance-matching materials

성능에서도 우수한 원료로 바꾸어

that can start to replace plastics

플라스틱이나 이산화탄소를 배출하는 다른 원료를

and other CO2-emitting materials.

대체할 수단이 될 수 있습니다.

And once we start growing materials with living organisms,

생명 유기체를 이용해 원료를 생산하기 시작하면

it starts to make previous methods of manufacture seem illogical.

Take the humble house brick.

평범한 벽돌을 예로 들어보죠.

The cement industry generates around eight percent

시멘트 산업에서 발생하는 이산화탄소의 양은

of global CO2 emissions.

전 세계 발생량의 약 8%입니다.

That's more than all the planes and ships each year.

매년 운행하는 모든 비행기와 배를 합친 것보다도 많아요.

The cement process requires materials to be fired in a kiln

시멘트 제조 과정에서는 원료를 가마에 넣어

at over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

섭씨 약 1,100도의 열을 가합니다.

Compare this to bioMASON.

바이오메이슨 벽돌과 비교해 보죠.

They use a soil microbe to transform loose aggregates,

이 회사에선 모래나 돌 조각 같은 골재를

like sand or crushed stone,

흙 미생물을 사용하여 변형해

into a biofabricated, or biocement, brick.

바이오 제조법으로 벽돌을 만들죠.

Their process happens at room temperature,

Think: hydroponics for bricks.

An irrigation system feeds nutrient-rich water

영양분이 풍부한 물을 벽돌에 공급하는

that have been inoculated with bacteria.

여기엔 박테리아를 주입했고요.

The bacteria produce crystals

이 박테리아가 각 모래알 주변에

that form around each grain of sand,

locking together all the loose particles

to form a solid brick.

단단한 벽돌이 만들어집니다.

We can now grow construction materials

이제 건축 자재까지도

in the elegant way nature does,

자연의 방식으로 우아하게 만드는 거죠.

just like a coral reef.

산호초처럼요.

And these biofabricated bricks are nearly three times stronger

또한 이 바이오 제조 벽돌은 콘크리트 벽돌보다

than a concrete block.

3배가량 더 견고합니다.

And in stark contrast to traditional cement production,

만들면서 발생한 탄소량이 벽돌 내 탄소량보다도 적으니

they store more carbon than they make.

기존 제조 과정과도 극명히 대비되고요.

So if we could replace the 1.2 trillion fired bricks

그러니 현재 매년 가마에 구워 생산하는

with biofabricated bricks,

we could reduce CO2 emissions

Beyond growing materials with living organisms,

we're even starting to design products

that encourage their growth.

And this comes from the realization

that the very thing we've been trying to marginalize -- life --

하찮게 여겼던 바로 그 생명이란 것이

might actually be our greatest collaborator.

실은 최고의 협력자라는 깨달음에서 비롯됐어요.

To that end, we've been exploring all the ways

이러한 맥락을 통해 우리 생태계에서

that we can grow healthy microbes in our own ecosystems.

건강한 미생물을 길러낼 모든 방법을 연구하고 있고요.

A great example of this is architects

이러한 방법의 아주 좋은 예로

who are imagining the skin of a building

건물 표면에 나무껍질과 같은 기능을 부여하는

to function like the bark of a tree.

건축법을 들 수 있습니다.

But not as a cosmetic green layer.

단지 예쁘게 초록색을 입히는 게 아닙니다.

They're designing architectural barks

생태 진화의 숙주인

as hosts for evolving ecologies.

건축용 나무껍질을 디자인하는 것이죠.

These surface structures are designed to invite life in.

이렇게 만든 표면은 생명력을 포용합니다.

And if we applied the same energy we currently do suppressing forms of life

현재 우리가 생명력 억제에 쓰는 에너지를

towards cultivating life,

생명을 일구는 데 쓴다면

we'd turn the negative image of the urban jungle

도시 정글의 부정적 이미지를

into one that literally embodies a thriving, living ecosystem.

생명력 넘치는 생태 환경의 이미지로 바꿀 수 있을 겁니다.

By actively encouraging surface interactions with healthy microbes,

건강한 미생물을 이용한 표면 상호작용을 장려함으로써

we could improve passive climate control,

수동적 기후 제어 방법과

stormwater management

빗물 관리 능력을 향상하고

and even reduce CO2 emissions

건물 냉난방에 쓰이는 에너지를 줄여

by lowering the energy used to heat or cool our buildings.

이산화탄소 발생도 억제할 수 있습니다.

We're just beginning to realize the potential

지금은 그저 자연 기반 기술의 잠재력을

of nature-based technologies.

깨우치는 단계일 뿐입니다.

I'm excited that we're starting to design and biofabricate

바이오 제조법으로 새로운 원료의 세상을 만들어간다니

a new material world.

무척 기쁜 일이에요.

It's one that moves away from the exploitation

재생 불가능한 자원의 남용에서 벗어나

of nonrenewable resources

독창적이고 재생 가능한 생명을

to working with the original, renewable life.

이용하는 세상이죠

Instead of designing out life,

생명을 벗어난 디자인이 아닌

we're designing with it and for it.

생명을 포함하고 생명을 위하는 디자인입니다.

Packaging, fashion, footwear, furniture, construction --

포장, 패션, 신발, 가구, 건축까지

biofabricated products can be grown close to centers of demand,

바이오 제조법으로 만들어진 상품은 고객의 수요에도 부응할 수 있고

with local resources, less land, energy,

현지 자원을 활용하고 공간과 에너지도 적게 소모하며

and even harnessing industrial waste streams.

산업 폐기물 관리에도 이용할 수 있습니다.

It used to be that the tools of biotechnology

지금까지 생명공학 기술의 도구는

were the preserve of powerful,

힘 있는 다국적 화학 기업과

multinational chemical and biotech companies.

생명공학 기업들의 전유물이었습니다.

In the last century, we expected material innovation

지난 세기엔 듀퐁, 다우, 바스프 같은 회사에

to come from the likes of DuPont, Dow, BASF.

원료 혁명을 기대하곤 했죠.

But this 21st-century material revolution is being led by start-ups

하지만 21세기 원료 혁명은 소규모와 소자본의

with small teams and limited capital.

스타트업이 이끌고 있습니다.

And by the way, not all their founders have science degrees.

심지어 일부 업체는 창업자가 과학 전공자도 아니고

They include artists, architects and designers.

예술가, 건축가, 디자이너까지 있어요.

Over a billion dollars has already been invested

이미 십억 달러 이상이 바이오 제조 제품을 만드는

in start-ups biofabricating consumer products.

스타트업 업체들에 투입되었습니다.

I don't think we have a choice but to biofabricate our future.

미래에는 바이오 제조법 외엔 선택이 없을 거예요.

From the jacket you're wearing

우리가 입는 겉옷부터

to the chair you're sitting in

여러분이 앉아 있는 의자

to the home you live in,

우리가 사는 집까지

your designed material world shouldn't compromise your health

물질 세계의 디자인이 우리나 우리 지구의 건강을

or that of our planet.

해쳐서는 안 됩니다.

If materials can't be recycled

재활용이 불가능하거나

or naturally composted at home,

집에서 거름으로 사용할 수 없다면

we should reject them.

거부해야 해요.

I'm committed to making this future a reality

전 이런 미래를 현실로 만들고자 노력합니다.

by shining a light on all the amazing work

오늘날 행해지는 수많은 훌륭한 업적이

being done today

주목받게 하고

and by facilitating more interactions

디자이너와 과학자, 투자자와 브랜드 간의

between designers, scientists, investors and brands.

보다 손쉬운 상호작용을 도모하면서요.

Because we need a material revolution,

우리에겐 원료 혁명이 필요하니까요.

and we need it now.
