And now we think nothing of calling all over the world.

Well, something similar may be happening

But before I unpack that,

let's just talk about telescopes.

Telescopes were overestimated originally in their impact.

This is one of Galileo's early models.

That's what detecting an exoplanet is like.

And the cool thing is, the telescopes that are now being launched

would allow you to see a single candle lit on the moon.

And that's the kind of resolution that you need

to begin to image that little speck of dust

and see if it has a blue-green signature.

it means that life is common in the universe.

The first time you ever see a blue-green signature on a distant planet,

it means there's photosynthesis there,

there's water there,

And that's a calendar-changing event.

There's a before and after we were alone in the universe:

So as you're thinking about this,

we're now beginning to be able to image most of the universe.

And that is a time of miracle and wonder.

And we kind of take that for granted.

Something similar is happening in life.

So we're hearing about life in these little bits and pieces.

and we hear about this technology.

But the bottom line on life is that life turns out to be code.

And life as code is a really important concept because it means,

just in the same way as you can write a sentence

It means that we're beginning to learn how to read this language.

And this, of course, is the language that is used by this orange.

So how does this orange execute code?

이 오렌지가 어떻게 암호를 만드는 걸까요?

It doesn't do it in ones and zeroes like a computer does.

컴퓨터처럼 0과 1로 만들지는 않고요.

It sits on a tree, and one day it does:

And that means: execute.

If I edit a sentence in English on a word processor,

It was like long-distance calls.

The first $200 full genome was announced yesterday by Veritas.

So what we're doing in this stuff is we're gathering information

This is one of the largest databases on the planet

What they've done is taken all the genetic information they have

And so as you're looking at this stuff,

the really important change is the old biology used to be reactive.

You used to have a lot of biologists that had microscopes,

It only took us four years and 40 million dollars

And what we did

is we took the full gene code out of a cell --

Let me give you three short-term trends

So your computer chip can produce photographs,

One of the things you can do is you can start producing

So, medical school departments are one of the most conservative places on earth.

The way they teach anatomy is similar to the way they taught anatomy

But it's also beginning to affect a series of other businesses

And that, of course, brings up the interesting question:

And a lot of us think, "Oh no, we never want to redesign humans."

Now, some people say,

"That's going to affect the environment in an extreme way, don't do it."

"그건 생태계에 아주 큰 영향을 끼칠테니 하면 안됩니다."

Other people say,

다른 사람들을 말하죠.

"This is one of the things that's killing millions of people yearly.

"모기 때문에 매년 수 백만 명의 사람들이 죽고 있습니다.

Who are you to tell me that I can't save the kids in my country?"

당신이 무슨 권리로 내 아이들을 보호 할 수 없다고 하는 거죠?"

And why is this debate so complicated?

Because as soon as you let this loose in Brazil

or in Southern Florida --

mosquitoes don't respect walls.

You're making a decision for the world

This wonderful man won a Nobel Prize,

and after winning the Nobel Prize

he's been worrying about

how did life get started on this planet

지구에서 어떻게 생명이 시작되었는지

and how likely is it that it's in other places?

그리고 다른 행성은 어떨지에 대해서요.

So what he's been doing is going around to this graduate students

그래서 그는 대학생들을 찾아다니며

and saying to his graduate students,

"Build me life but don't use any modern chemicals or instruments.

"현대 화학물이나 기구를 쓰지 않고 생명체를 만들어주게.

Build me stuff that was here three billion years ago.

3백만 년 전에 이 곳에 있었던 것을 만들어줘."

You can't use lasers. You can't use this. You can't use that."

"레이저도 사용하면 안되고 이것도 안되고, 저것도 사용해선 안돼."

He gave me a vial of what he's built about three weeks ago.

그 친구가 그가 만든 것을 3주 전에 병에 담아서 보여줬습니다.

What has he built?

뭘 만들었냐고요?

He's built basically what looked like soap bubbles that are made out of lipids.

액체로 만든 비눗방울 같은 걸 만들어왔는데

He's built a precursor of RNA.

그게 바로 RNA의 전구체였습니다.

세포에 흡수 된 RNA의 전구체를 만들고,

He's had the precursor of the RNA be absorbed by the cell

and then he's had the cells divide.

We may not be that far --

call it a decade, maybe two decades --

10년, 아니면 20년 정도

from generating life from scratch

무(無)에서 생명을 창조하며

out of proto-communities.

원생공동체를 벗어나게 될지도 모릅니다.

Second long-term trend:

we've been living and are living through the digital age --

우리는 디지털 시대에 살아가고 있습니다.

we're starting to live through the age of the genome

유전체와, 생물학

and biology and CRISPR and synthetic biology --

CRISPR과 합성 생물학의 시대를 살아가고 있죠.

and all of that is going to merge into the age of the brain.

그리고 이 모든 것은 뇌의 시대로 통합될 겁니다.

So we're getting to the point where we can rebuild most of our body parts,

이제 인체 부위를 재생산할 수 있는 시대로 가고 있습니다.

in the same way as if you break a bone or burn your skin, it regrows.

마치 뼈를 다치거나, 화상을 입으면 다시 낫는 것처럼요.

We're beginning to learn how to regrow our tracheas

인류는 기도를 다시 만드는 방법을 배우기 시작했습니다.

또는 방광을 새로 만드는 법을요.

or how to regrow our bladders.

Both of those have been implanted in humans.

이 두 인체기관은 사람 몸에 이식된 사례가 있습니다.

Tony Atala is working on 32 different organs.

But the core is going to be this,

이 분야를 가장 중요하게 생각합니다.

because this is you and the rest is just packaging.

Nobody's going to live beyond 120, 130, 140 years

unless if we fix this.

이 문제를 해결하지 않는다면요.

그리고 이건 가장 대단한 도전입니다.

And that's the most interesting challenge.

차기 개척지가 될 도전이죠.

That's the next frontier, along with:

"How common is life in the universe?"

"우주에는 얼마나 많은 생명체가 있을까?" 와

"Where did we come from?"

"우린 어디서 왔는가?"

같은 질문과 함께요.

and questions like that.

Let me end this with an apocryphal quote from Einstein.

아인슈타인인지 모르는 명언으로 마무리 하곘습니다.

[You can live as if everything is a miracle,

[모든 것을 특별하게 여기며 살거나

or you can live as if nothing is a miracle.]

아무것도 특별하지 않은 것처럼 살거나]

It's your choice.

해악에 중점을 둘 수도 있고 두려움에 중점을 둘 수도 있습니다.

You can focus on the bad, you can focus on the scary,

실제로 미래에는 두려운 일들이 도사리고 있겠죠.

and certainly there's a lot of scary out there.

But use 10 percent of your brain to focus on that, or maybe 20 percent,

하지만 여러분 뇌의 10%만 이런 것들에 집중하는데 사용하세요.

or maybe 30 percent.

But just remember,

we really are living in an age of miracle and wonder.
