One day, I found myself at the top of a mountain,

one descent to go, one last chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.

I wasn't even old enough to walk into a PG-13 movie alone

when my dream took roots.

Yet there I stood,

my three teammates by my side,

facing the opportunity to make history.

My mind wandered, just for half a second,

마음이 잠깐 동안 방황했는데,

but that half-second was filled with a lifetime of memories,

and two decisions that brought me here to the top of the mountain.

I made the first decision after a very challenging period

in my career as an athlete --

five years of recurring injuries as a track athlete.

Five years -- that's a long time to dedicate to anything.

But as much as I loved track,

경주를 여전히 원하면서도, 부상이 제 정열과 꿈을 서서히 꺼버리고 있었습니다.

the injuries were slowly killing my drive and my dreams.

My injuries had me feeling like a failure

부상으로 인해 저는 그렇게 잘했던 운동을 실패로 느끼기도 했어요.

at a sport I was once great at.

The last of the series of injuries required major elbow surgery.

연달아 입은 부상의 마지막에는 중대한 팔꿈치수술을 받아야했죠.

As I sat on my couch, days out of surgery,

수술 며칠 후 소파에 앉아서

I thought of an old coach and mentor's words,

옛날 코치이자 멘토였던 사람이 저를 그가 전에 알던

comparing me to a great bobsledder he once knew.

훌륭한 봅슬레이 경기선수에 비교하며 한 말을 생각해봤어요.

"Bobsled? No way!"

"썰매타기? 그건 말도 안돼!"

But after year upon year of not reaching the goals

그렇지만 해를 거듭해 육상에서 제가 스스로 세운 목표를 달성하지 못하고보니,

I set for myself in track,

it was time for a change.

변화가 필요한 때였어요.

So I reached out to the US Olympic Committee,

그래서 미국올림픽위원회에 연락했더니 훈련을 시작하라 하더군요

and they told me to start training.

I was going to be a bobsledder!

잘됐죠, 밥슬레이드 선수가 되는거였어요. 밥슬레이드에 대해 사실 아무 것도 아는게 없었지만,

I didn't know anything about it,

첫번째 결정이 내려졌어요.

but the first decision had been made.

There I was, in what felt like a blink of an eye later,

그리고 저는 거기 있었어요, 눈 깜짝할 새였던 것만 같은데,

about to push my four-man sled with my team

우리팀 4명이 미는 봅슬레이로

to the chance of Olympic gold, Olympic glory.

올림픽 금메달, 올림픽 영예의 기회를 놓고

"Back set! Front set! Ready and --"

"앞 점검! 뒤 점검! 준비---"

the driver yelled, and off we went.

운전자가 소리질렀고, 우린 부리나케 떠났죠

We dug as deep as we could,

우리는 할수 있는 한 가장 깊숙히 밀면서, 발걸음을 맞추어 속력을 내자 썰매도 가속해서

and as the cadence of our steps increased and the sled accelerated,

we left everything we had on the track,

모든 것을 뒤로 하고 얼음을 떠나

before leaving the ice and boarding our Night Train sled.

밤기차 (Night Train) 썰매에 올라 탔어요.

And a calm came over me.

그러자 제게 평온함이 밀려 왔어요,

And once in the sled, as it was picking up speed,

썰매안에서 일단 속력을 느끼자,

for just another millisecond,

곧 그 날 소파에서의 그 순간이 떠올랐어요.

my mind went back to that day on the couch.

"How can I train for the bobsled team without getting hurt

"어떻게 전처럼 거듭해 다치지 않고 밥슬레이 트레이닝을 할수있을까?"

over and over again like before?"

I looked in the mirror and realized I still wanted to compete.

거울을 들여다보며, 아직도 완수하고자 하는 자신을 깨달았어요

I still wanted to succeed.

아직도 성공하길 원했습니다.

But I had to face the reality that my getting hurt

그렇지만 다치는 것을 두고 누구도 탓할 수 없다는 사실을직면해야 했어요.

wasn't to be blamed elsewhere.

I realized that if I had a problem it was up to me to change it,

문제가 있다면 그 해결은 제게 달려있는 것을 깨달아야 했죠.

and that what I had been doing all this time

제가 그 동안 쭉 해온 것이

may not have been best for me.

최상의 해결책이 아닐 수도 있다는 걸 직면해야 했어요.

I had to confront my reality and make a change,

제가 현실을 직시하고 변화를 각오해야 했죠.

and that was the second decision.

그리고 그것이 두번쨰 결정이었어요.

The decision in my mind not to get hurt anymore had many layers,

더 이상 다치지 않겠다는 결정은 여러 복잡한 과정을 거치지만,

but it mostly had to do with taking responsibility

무엇보다 제가 삶의 모든 변수에 대한 책임을 지는것에 관련되어 있어요.

for all the variables in my life.

If I thought something I would do or something I felt

제가 부상 당할 수 있는 일을 하거나, 당할 것처럼 느끼면

would lead me to injury, then it most certainly would.

십중팔구 그렇게 됐었죠.

I would have to have a fundamental shift in mindset.

마음 자세를 근본적으로 바꿔야했어요.

I learned to let go of the fears I had trained myself to have over the years

해를 거듭하면서 길들어진 두려움을 버리고

and decided to trust myself and my body

단지 제 자신과 제 몸을 믿고

to push through situations I had thought insurmountable before.

그 전에 정복 불가능하게 여겼던 상황을 뚫고 나가리라고 마음먹었습니다.

What followed those five years of injuries

그 5년간의 부상 다음에는

were nine years of not missing one race I entered

9년 동안 한번도 거르지않고

미국내와 올림픽 경기에 팀으로 참가했어요

for the USA National and Olympic teams.

Because I made a decision, then another one,

제가 한 가지 결심을하고, 그에 이어 또 다른 결심을 하고난 다음에

and held true to those two decisions,

I found myself back with my team approaching 90 miles per hour.

And as we came around the last corners, I could hear the crowd cheering

and the cowbells blaring, and a hard "You!" coming from the masses

as we passed by at 95 miles an hour.

But someone wasn't yelling "You!" at us, they were yelling "USA!"

그렇지만 우리보고 "유!"라고 한게 아니라, "유 에스 에이!" 라고 소리지른건데

We were moving so fast, we only heard the first piece of it.

우리가 너무 빨리 움직이고 있어서 첫 대목만 들린거죠.

We then came around the last bend,

and when we all looked up, the clock simply read "1."

We had done it; we were Olympic gold medalists.

We were the best in the world.

My hands went up immediately,

as the moment I had been waiting for my entire life had finally come true.

저희 썰매가 서서히 멈추고

And as our sled slowly came to a stop

제가 군중 속에서 엄마, 아버지,

and I looked into the crowd to see my mom, dad,

sister and family and friends crying for me,

여동생, 가족, 친구들 모두 저로 인해 우는걸 봤을때

I knew my decisions had been worth the sacrifice, worth the fear.

저는 제 결정이 희생과 두려움을 감수할만한 것이었다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

Two decisions and those five minutes sitting on that couch

두 가지 결심과 소파에서 보낸 5분의 시간이

began to change my life,

제 생애를 바꾸기 시작했고

and sticking to them fulfilled my dreams.

끈질기게 버틴 것이 제 꿈을 성취했어요.

It was those decisions and standing by them

그렇게 결심하고 꿋꿋이 견뎌낸 것이

that ultimately gave me the confidence to perform at the Olympic games.

결국 제게 올림픽에 출전할 자신감을 준거죠.
