Part of having an advanced English vocabulary is knowing phrasal verbs, idioms and yes,

جزء من اتقان مفردات اللغه الانجليزيه هو التعرف على المصطلحات والافعال المركبه

proverbs.

والامثال

But if you search on Google English proverbs, you're going to find lists of 150 proverbs.

لكن لو بحثت فى جوجل ستجد ١٥٠ قائمه من الامثال

That's way too much.

لذلك فهو كثير جدا

Nobody wants that, and when I looked at those, half of them, I didn't know what they were

لا احد يريد ذلك. عندما نظرت عليهم وجدت اكثر من نصفهم لا اعرف عنهم شىء

and I've never used most of them in my life.

ولم استخدمهم فى حياتى من قبل

You don't want to waste your time.

وانت لا تريد ان تضيع وقتك

If native speakers don't use them, then you don't need to know them unless of course you

ان لم يستخدمهم المتحدثون باللغه؛ فانت ايضا لا تريد ان تعرفهم، الا اذا

know everything about English already and you want to know more of the stuff that I

مما لا تعرفه، حسنا، فلتتعلمهم

Today I want to help you learn seven common proverbs that native speakers actually use

اليوم اريد ان اعلمك سبع امثال شائعه يستخدمهم متحدثوا اللغه الاصليين

in real life.

فى الحياه العاديه

If you use these, native speakers won't look at you like you're strange because these are

اذا استخدمتهم، فان المتحدثون الاصليين لن ينظروا اليك كغريب. لانهم يستخدموهم ايضا فى الحياه

normal.

العاديه

Don't use a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

لا تقل عصفور فى اليد خير من اثنان فى العش

We never say this.

نحن لا نقول ذلك ابدا

It sounds pretentious.

تبدوا مصطنعه

Pretentious means snobby or stuck up.

مصطنعه تعنى ماخوذة وغير مفيده

بدلا من ذلك، استخدم السبع امثال التاليه كمعظم المتحدثين الاصليين

Instead, use these seven proverbs, like normal people.

Sometimes English learners find it difficult to learn proverbs because proverbs can be

فى بعض الاحيان، متعلمون الانجليزيه يجدون صعوبه فى تعلم الامثال لانه من الممكن ان تتكون الامثال

long sentences or at least a couple words all together that you need to know in the

من جمل طويله او مجموعه من الكلمات التى يجب ان تكون

exact order, but the good news is that all of these seven proverbs can be shortened to

فى نفس النمط، ولكن لحسن الحظ انا السبع امثال من الممكن

just a few words.

اختصارهم فى عده كلمات

We'll talk about that in just a moment.

سنتحدث عن ذلك فى خلال برهه وجيزه

But let's get started with the first four.

فلنبدا باول اربعه امثال

Number one, actions speak louder than words.

الاول، الافعال ابلغ من الاقوال

If you tell your mom that you're going to take out the trash and you don't do it, she

لو اخبرت والدتك بانك ستقوم بالقاء الزباله بالخارج ولكنك لم تفعل، فهى

might say to you, "Actions speak louder than words, just do it."

من الممكن ان تقول لك"الافعال ابلغ من الاقوال" فقط قم بالقاء القمامه

Or you can reduce this proverb and use the expression, "You know what they say about

او من الممكن ان تختصر هذا المثل وتستخدم التعبير " انت تعلم ماذا يقولون عن

actions."

الافعال"

We're going to be filling in that final word with something different for each proverb.

سنقوم باستخدام تعبير بعد شرح كل مثل

So if you don't take out the trash and your mom says to you, "Actions speak louder than

اذا، ان لم تقم بالقاء القمامه فوالدتك ستقول لك" الافعال ابلغ من

words."

الاقوال"

حسنا، من الممكن ان تقول بدلا عن ذلك "ان تعلم ماذا يقولون عن الافعال" وهى تتوقع

Well, she might say, instead, "You know what they say about actions," and she's expecting

that you know this proverb.

انك تعرف المثل

She's expecting that in your head, you will fill in actions speak louder than words.

فهى تتوقع انك انك تعلم ان الافعال ابلغ من الاقوال

So you will definitely hear this and you can use this.

فانت بالتاكيد سمعت هذا وستقوم باستخدامه

Oh, you know what they say about actions.

انت تعلم ماذا يقول عن الافعال

It means that actions speak louder than words.

بمعنى الافعال ابلغ من الاقوال

So what you're doing right now is not matching with your words.

لذلك ماذا تفعل الان لا يبرهن عن اقوالك

Actions speak louder than words.

الافعال ابلغ من الاقوال

Let's see how this kind of phrase, the shortening in this phrase would work with another proverb.

لنرى، اذا كيف يعمل هذا المثل واختصاره مع مثل اخر

Proverb number two, honesty is the best policy.

المثل الثانى، الصدق افضل سياسه للتعامل

Just like all proverbs.

مثل كل الامثال

This is a little bit too simple.

هذا بسيط شيئا ما

Sometimes honesty is not the best option, at least 100%.

فى بعض الاحيان، الصدق ليس افضل طريقه، على الاقل ١٠٠℅ من

Honesty, you don't want to say, "That dress looks terrible on you."

الصراحه، ان لا تريد القول" يبدو ان هذا الفستان قبيح عليك"

Probably not a good idea to be completely honest in this situation, but in general,

من المحتمل، ان صدق ليست بالشئ الافضل تماما فى هذا الموقف

honesty is a great idea.

الصدق فكره جميله

So we could say honesty is the best policy.

لذلك من الممكن القول بان الصدق افضل سياسه للتعامل

What if we used our shortening expression?

ماذا لو قمنا باستخدام التعبير المبسط

You know what they say about honesty.

انت تعلم ماذا يقولون عن الصدق

So let's imagine that at work, one of your friends saw that someone else was stealing

دعنا نتخيل ان احد زملائك بالعمل راي شخص يسرق

some supplies from the office and your friend says to you, "Should I tell our boss?

بعض الادوات من المكتب وقال صديقك لك" هل اخبر المدير"

I don't want to tattle."

انا لا اريد الوشى

That means to tell on the other person, "But I don't think it's right.

بمعنى، الابلاغ عن شخص اخر. لا اعتقد ان هذا صحيحا

What should I do?"

ماذا افعل

You might say, "Well, you know what they say about honesty," and you're expecting that

من الممكن القول" حسنا، ان تعلم ماذا يقولون عن الصدق"

your friend knows this proverb because all native speakers know this proverb.

صديقك يعلم هذا المثل لان كل المتحدثين الاصليين يعرفوا هذا المثل

Honesty is the best policy.

الصدق افضل سياسه لتعامل

You're expecting that your friend will think, "Oh yeah, honesty is the best policy.

انت تتوقع ان زميلك يعلم ان " بالفعل، الصدق افضل سياسه للتعامل"

I should be honest.

يجب ان اكون صادق

I should tell my boss about this situation."

ينبغى ان ابلغ مديرى بهذا الموقف".

So you can say honesty is the best policy, or you can use our special phrase, you know

لذلك من الممكن ان تقول الصدق افضل سياسه للتعامل او ان تستخدم الجمله المميزة، انت تعرف

what they say about honesty.

ماذا يقولون عن الصدق

Let's go onto the third one.

فلنبدا بالمثل الثالث

The third common proverb is no news is good news.

المثل الشائع الثالث هو " لا اخبار تعنى اخبار جيده

Let me tell you a quick story.

دعنى اخبركم قصه قصيره

When my husband went to college, which is where I met him, the college was eight hours

عندما كان يذهب زوجى الى الكليه، المكان الذى قابلته فيه، كانت تبعد الكليه ٨ ساعات

away from where his parents lived and when he went to college, he was so into the activities

من المكان الذي يعيش فيه والديه ،وعندما كان يذهب الى الكليه فانه كان منهمكا بانشطتها

وكذلك الدراسه، نوع من الدراسه التى بموجبها لم يتصل بوالدته لمده شهرين

and into studying, kind of studying that he didn't call his mom for two months.

So in this situation his mom could have said, "Well, no news is good news."

فانه فى هذا الموقف، من الممكن ان تقول والدته" حسنا، لا اخبار تعنى اخبار جيده"

This means that if there was a big problem, she would probably know about it.

بمعنى انه لو هناك مشكله كبيره فمن المحتمل انها ستعرفها

Either Dan, my husband, would call her or maybe the school would call her.

حتى دان، زوجى، من الممكن ان يبلغها او سيتصل احدهم من المدرسه

So if there's no news, it's probably good news.

لذلك لو لم يوجد اخبار فانه من المحتمل ان تعنى انها اخبار جيده

نستطيع ان نختصر هذا المثل بتعبير " حسنا، انت تعرف ماذا يقولون عن

We can shorten this expression with our key phrase, "Well, you know what they say about

no news."

لا اخبار

So maybe if a Dan's parents are having a conversation and they're saying, "Why didn't Dan call us?

فانه من المحتمل عندما كان والدى دان يتحدثون عنه مع بعضهم ان يقولوا" لماذا لم يتصل دان"

Is he okay?

هل هو بخير؟

It's been two months."

لقد مر شهرين

من المحتمل ان والد دان كان يقول لوالدته" حسنا، انتى تعرفين ماذا يقولون عندما لا يوجد اخبار"

Dan's dad might say to his mom, "Well, you know what they say about no news," and Dan's

mom might say, "Yeah, yeah, I know.

فمن المحتمل ان تقول والدته" نعم، نعم، ان اعلم،

Okay, well he's probably fine."

طبعا، هو ممكن ان يكون بخير"

So we can shorten it by using that expression.

لذلك من الممكن اختصار هذا المثل

The fourth common proverb is better late than never.

المثل الشائع الرابع، ان تصل متاخرة خير من الا تصل ابدا

This is one of my favorite excuses for being late because you don't really have to explain

هذا المثل مفضل كعذرا بالنسبه لى ان اصل متاخرة لاننى ساتجنب الشرح

why you're late.

لماذا تاخرت

You can just say, "Hey, better late than never," which means you should be happy that I'm here

ممكن ان تقول" انظر، من الافضل ان تصل متاخرة خيرا من الا تصل ابدا" لذلك ينبغى ان تكون سعيدا اننى هنا

at all.

من اننى لم اتتى من الاصل

It's better to be late than to never come to that place.

من الافضل ان تصل متاخر من الا تصل الى هذا المكان ابدا

So better late than never.

اذا، من الافضل ان تصل متاخرا من الا تصل ابدا

How can we shorten this?

كيف لنا ان نختصر هذا؟

Using the phrase, "Well, you know what they say about," we can't use the previous style,

استخدام هذه الجمله" حسنا، انت تعرف ماذا يقولون عن.. " نستطيع استخدام الاسلوب السابق

which is just taking that first word.

بان ناخذ اول كلمه

Instead, we're going to have to make a little verb phrase here, you know what they say about

بدلا عنه، نحن سنقوم باخذ فعل من الجمله هنا، انت تعلم ماذا يقولون

being late.

عن التاخير

You know what they say about being late.

ان تعلم ماذا يقولون عن الوصول متاخرا

It's better than ever coming.

انه افضل من ان لا تاتى ابدا

So here, if you come to a party late and everyone's already there, they're already eating.

لذلك هنا، لو وصلت الى حفله ما متاخرا ووجدت كلهم هناك وهم بالفعل ياكلون

You could say, "Better late than never," or maybe if you're the host of a party and someone,

تسطيع القول" من الافضل ان تصل متاخرا بالا تصل ابدا. ربما انت من قمت باستضافتهم للحفله واحدهم

one of your friends comes to the party late, you could say, "Better late than never."

احد اصدقائك وصل متاخرا انت تقول له" من الافضل ان تصل متاخرا بلا تصل ابدا

Or you might say, "Well, you know what they say about being late," and it just shows,

او ان من الممكن ان تقول" حسنا، انت تعرف ماذا يقولون عندما تصل متاخرا" او ان تقول

"Hey, I'm glad you're here.

انا مسرور لانك هنا

Even though you're late.

على الرغم من وصولك متاخرا

Who Cares?

لا احد مهتم؟

I'm glad you're here."

ان مسرور لانك هنا

Before we go onto the next three proverbs, let's do a quick review.

قبل البدء فى الثلاثه امثال دعنا نراجع بسرعه

You could say, "You know what they say about actions.

ممكن ان تقول" انت تعرف ماذا يقولون عن الافعال"

You know what they say about honesty.

انت تعرف ماذا يقولون عن الصدق

You know what they say about no news.

انت تعرف ماذا يقولون عن لا اخبار

You know what they say about being late."

انت تعرف ماذا يقولون عن عن ان تاتى متاخرا

All right, let's go onto the next three proverbs, which we can shorten in a different way.

حسنا، لنبدا بالثلاثه امثال التى سنختصرهم بطريق اخرا

The fifth proverb that we commonly use is slow and steady wins the race.

خامس مثل الذى نستخدمه بشكل شائع هو ببطء وثبات تربح السباق

Slow and steady wins the race.

ببطء وثبات تربح السباق

This comes from the fable of the tortoise or a turtle and the hare, another word for

ماخوذة من خرافه الارنب والسلحفاء

a rabbit.

الارنب

They're in a race.

هناك سباق

The hare goes quickly and then gets often distracted, but the tortoise, the turtle goes

الارنب بدء سريعا ثم بدا يتشتت، ولكن السلحفاة بدات

slow and steady.

ببط واثبات

He is consistent and because he doesn't stop, he wins the race.

ولانها لم تقف ففازت بالسباق

Maybe you don't want to learn all seven of these proverbs and memorize them today, but

ربما انت لا تريد ان تتعلم و تتذكر السبع امثال اليوم اليوم، ولكن

you're going to memorize one every day for a week.

يمكن ان تتذكر واحده منهم يوميا لمده سبع ايام

You are going to study slow and steady, great.

انت ستدرس ببطء وثبات، عظيم

But how can we shorten this expression?

ولكن كيف يمكن ان نختصر هذا المثل

We often just say slow and steady.

فى الغالب نقول ببطء وثبات

It just means the same thing.

انها تحمل نفس المعنى

Slow and steady wins the race.

ببطء وثبات تربح السباق

Let's imagine a quick situation.

لنتخيل موقف بسرعه

If you're cleaning your house and it just seems like a total disaster.

لو انت تنظف منزلك ويبدوا انه غير مرتب على الاطلاق

There's so much mess everywhere and your friend comes over and says, "What in the world are

هناك كثيرا من القمامه وصديقا لك اتى لزيارتك وسٱلك ماذا

you doing?

تفعل هنا

This looks like a disaster."

هذه تشبه الكارثه

You could say, "Slow and steady, slow and steady," and this means that you're cleaning

تستطيع القول" ببطء وثبات، ببطء وثبات وهذا يعنى انك تنظف

slowly but steadily.

ببطء وثبات

It might look like a disaster, but don't worry, slowly and steadily you will clean your house.

انها تشبه الكارثه ولكن لا تقلق ببطء وثبات ستنظف المنزل

You can just say, "Slow and steady, slow and steady," and they can understand that by being

ان تستطيع القول " ببطء وثبات، ببطء وثبات" يستطيع الفهم

slow and by being steady, you will win the race.

بكونك بطيء وثابت سوف تربح السباق

You will win the cleaning mess.

وستنظف منزلك

Let's go onto the sixth proverb, which we can also shorten by saying just the first

دعنا نبدا فى المثل السادس والذى يمكن ان نختصره بقول فقط

couple words.

عده كلمات

The sixth proverb is the grass is always greener on the other side.

المثل السادس العشب دائما اكثر خضره فى الجانب الاخر

Grass is the little plants, the little green leaves that come up in a soccer field, that's

العشب هو نبات صغير ذات اغصان صغيره وخضراء الذى نستخدمه فى ملاعب كره القدم

grass.

العشب

Have you ever been out to eat at a restaurant and you see your friends' food and you think,

هل ذهبت ذات مره الى مطعم ونظرت الى اكل اصدقائه وفكرت

"I wish I'd ordered that."

لو انك طلبت نفس الطلب

You're kind of jealous of their food.

انت نوعا ما غرت من اكلهم

Well, in the situation the grass is their food.

حسنا، هذا الموقف ينطبق على الاكل مثل العشب

Someone else's thing seems better than yours.

اشياء احدهم افضل من اشيائك

The grass is greener on the other side.

العشب اكثر حضره بالجنب الاخر

The origin of this proverb is a lawn or a yard.

اصل هذا المثل من حديقه المنزل الخارجيه

There is a fence and there's your lawn and there's your neighbor's lawn.

هناك سور وهناك حديقتك وحديقه جارك

Their lawn always looks better than your lawn, at least that's what you think.

حديقتهم دائما افضل من حديقة، على الاقل هذا ما تفكر به

You're a little bit jealous because their thing looks better than your thing.

قليلا من الغيره لان اشيائهم افضل من اشيائك

But here we have a subtle meaning with this idiom.

ولكن هناك معنى ثابت مع هذا المصطلح

It means that you think their food is better.

انك تعتقد ان طعامهم افضل

You think their grass is greener.

ان تعتقد ان عشبهم اكثر خضره

But in reality it's probably not.

ولكن فى الحقيقه من المحتمل الا يكون كذلك

It's just in your head.

فقط هذا ما تفكر به

What someone else has always seems better than what we have.

ما عند الاخرين دائما افضل مما لديك

So here it's kind of a false perception.

لذلك فهناك نوعا ما من ادراك خاطىء

Other food isn't actually better than what I ordered, but I just think it is.

طعام الاخرين فى الواقع لم يكن افضل مما طلبت

So in this situation, when you're eating out with your friend and you say, "Oh, your food

لذلك فى هذا الموقف، عندما تاكل مع صديق ثم تقول" اه طعامك

looks so good, I wish I'd ordered that."

يبدوا افضل، اتمنى لو طلبت هذا"

Your friend might say, "The grass is always greener."

ربما يقول صديقك" العشب دائما اكثر حضره "

The grass is always greener.

العشب دائما اكثر خضره

Your friend didn't finish the expression on the other side.

صديقك لم يكمل التعبير فى الجانب الاخر

Your friend just said the first couple words.

صديقك فقط تكلم ببعض الكلمات الاولى

The grass is always greener.

العشب دائما اكثر خضره

You can use this in so many situations in English and really in daily life.

تستطيع ان تستخدم هذا المثل فى كثير من المواقف بالانجليزيه فى الحياه اليوميه

The seventh and final proverb that we're going to talk about is a classic one, do unto others

المثل السابع والاخير، الذى ستحدث عنه فهو قديم، اصفح عن الاخرين

what you would have them do unto you.

لا تفعل بالاخرين ما لا تحبه لنفسك

This comes from a saying of Jesus in the Bible and really it means do to other people what

هذا ماخوذ من قول السيد المسيح(عليه السلام) فى الانجيل وهى يعنى فى الحقيقه افعلا بالاخرين

you want them to do to you.

ما تريدهم ان يفعلوا معك

It uses some kind of fancy old fashioned language.

بعض الكلمات القديمه الجميله

We often use this for children.

فغالبا نستخدمه مع الاطفال

Maybe if one child takes a toy from another child, the parent might say, "Oh, do to your

فاذا اخذ طفل لعبه طفل اخر ربما قال والديهم " اه، افعلوا

friends what you want them to do to you."

لاصدقاكم ما تريدون ان يفعلوه معكم"

Maybe in little simpler terms like this instead of do unto others, we might use it in simpler

ربما اختصاره بمصطلح بديل اصفح عن الاخرين، ربما نستخدمه بالشكل البسيط

terms for children.

مع الاطفال

I thought about this proverb actually a couple weeks ago because a local store got robbed

ان فكرت فى هذا المثل منذ بضعه اسابيع عندما سرق متجر محلى

by a man at gunpoint and it was the third time that this store got robbed within a couple

بواسطه رجل مسلح وكانت ثالث مره يسرق هذا المحل خلال

of months, and I thought, "What?

عده اشهر وانا اعتقدت، " ماذا؟

How did this happen again?

كيف حدث ذلك مره اخرى

Come on, do unto others.

اصفح عن الاخرين

How hard is it?"

كيف كانت صعبه؟

I used this, and in my head as I was thinking about it, do on to others, to mean why did

انا فكرت به اصفح عن الاخرين، ويقصد لماذا

the man do this?

فعل ذلك هذا الرجل؟

He's not thinking about how his actions will have an effect on other people.

هو لا يفكر بماذا ستصنع افعاله بالاخرين.

He doesn't want someone to rob him, so come on, do on to others what you want them to

هذا اللص لا يريد احد ان يسرقه، افعل بالاخرين ما تريدهم ان

do unto you.

يفعلوه معك

But instead we can shorten this and just say, "Do unto others.

ممكن ان نختصره فقط بالقول اصفح عن الاخرين

Do unto others."

اصفح عن الاخرين

We might say this to other people in our lives or maybe just think about it in our hands,

ربما نستطيع ان نقوله مع اناس اخرين فى حياتنا او فقط نفكر به فى عقولنا

"Do unto others.

اصفح عن الاخرين

Okay, I can do it.

نعم، ان استطيع فعل ذلك

Do unto others."

اصفح عن الاخرين

Now I have a question for you.

الان انا لدى سؤال لك

حسنا، انت تعرفين ماذا يقولوا عن الصراحه"، او انك قلق بشأن تقدمك

in English, you can just think, "Slow and steady, slow and steady.

فى الانجليزيه، يمكن ان نقول فقط"ببطء وثبات، ببطء وثبات.

I can do it."
