How to Pronounce Initial T and D Consonant Sounds | Learn English Pronunciation Course

In this video, I'm going to focus on two initial consonant sounds in English.

အင်္ဂလိပ်လို မူရင်းဗျည်း

နှစ်လုံးကို အာရုံစိုက်ပါမယ်

The /t/ sound and the /d/ sound.

။ /t/ အသံနှင့် /d/ အသံ။

They may be confusing because they sound quite similar.

အသံတူသောကြောင့်

But they are very different.

And they are important sounds in the English language.

So I want you to be able to pronounce them correctly.

Let's start with two example words.

ဥပမာ စကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးနဲ့ စကြည့်ရအောင်။

The first example word is the word ‘ten’ with a ‘t’ sound.

ပထမဥပမာစကားလုံးမှာ

't' အသံဖြင့် 'ဆယ်' စကားလုံးဖြစ်သည်။

‘ten’

'ဆယ်'

It's different from ‘den’ with a ‘d’ sound.

သည် 'd' အသံဖြင့် 'တွင်း' နှင့် ကွဲပြားသည်။

'တွင်း'

So ‘ten’, ‘den’.

ဒါဆို 'ဆယ်' 'တွင်း'။

Can you hear the difference?

First, let's learn how to produce this /t/ sound in English.

/t/ It's voiceless.

အသံမထွက်ဘူး။

You're not using your voice.

မင်းအသံကို မသုံးဘူး။ သင့်လည်ချောင်းတွင် တုန်ခါမှုမရှိပါ။

No vibration in your throat.

You're just going to push out some air.

မင်းလေကို တွန်းထုတ်လိုက်ရုံပဲ။

You put your tongue against your top teeth and you push out some air.

မင်းရဲ့ လျှာကို မင်းရဲ့ထိပ်သွားတွေပေါ်တင်

ပြီး လေကို တွန်းထုတ်လိုက်ပါ။

And now moving on to the /d/ sound.

The tongue is in the same place as with the /t/ sound.

လျှာသည် /t/ အသံနှင့်

တူညီသောနေရာတွင် ရှိနေသည်

It's actually the same but this /d/ sound is voiced.

ပေမယ့် ဒီ /d/ အသံက အသံထွက်တယ်။

You're going to use your voice and your throat is going to vibrate.

မင်းရဲ့အသံကိုသုံးတော့

မင်းလည်ချောင်းတွေ တုန်ခါသွားလိမ့်မယ်။

So you put your tongue against your top teeth but this time you don't push out some air

ဒါကြောင့် မင်းရဲ့ လျှာကို မင်းရဲ့ ထိပ်သွားတွေ နဲ့ ကပ်ထား

ပေမယ့် ဒီတစ်ခါတော့ မင်းအသံထွက်မလာဘူးလေ

you produce a sound.

These words that are almost the same but the sounds are different.

They're very good if you want to focus on the differences between the sounds.

First let's focus on the sounds themselves.

Just a trick.

လှည့်ကွက်တစ်ခုပါ။

The /t/ sound is voiceless.

/t/ အသံသည် အသံမဲ့။

The /d/ sound is voiced.

/d/ အသံသည် အသံထွက်သည်။

If you really want to make sure that you can do it properly,

မှန်ကန်စွာ လုပ်နိုင်တယ်ဆိုတာ သေချာချင်ရင်တော့

what you can do is you put your hand in front of your mouth…

မင်းလက်ကို ပါးစပ်ရှေ့မှာ တင်ထားလိုက်ပါ…

If it's voiceless, it means that you're going to push out some air.

အသံမထွက်ဘူးဆိုရင် လေကို တွန်းထုတ်တော့မယ်လို့ ဆိုလိုတာပါ။

And you're going to feel some air on your hands.

ပြီး​တော့ မင်းလက်​​ပေါ် ​လေတစ်​ချို့ကို ခံစားမိလိမ့်​မယ်​။

You can actually feel the air on your hand.

/t/

မင်းလက်ထဲက လေကို တကယ်ခံစားနိုင်တယ်။

If it's voiced, you won't.

အသံထွက်ရင် မင်းလုပ်မှာမဟုတ်ဘူး။

But if it's voiced, if you put your hands on your throat, you can feel the vibration,

ဒါပေမယ့် အသံထွက်ရင် လက်ကို လည်ချောင်းမှာ တင်ထားရင် တုန်ခါမှုကို ခံစားရနိုင်ပါတယ်

okay.

So you can do that to make sure that you pronounce correctly.

ဒါကြောင့် အသံထွက်မှန်အောင် သေချာလုပ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။
