In this video, I’m going to talk about two similar sounding and confusing English words

First, let’s start with ‘accept’.

Listen carefully to how I say it.

It's a verb.

এটি একটি ক্রিয়া।

The main meaning of ‘accept’ is to agree or receive something that is offered to you.

'স্বীকার' এর মূল অর্থ হল সম্মত হওয়া

বা গ্রহণ করা যা আপনাকে দেওয়া হয়।

Someone wants to give you something and you accept.

কেউ আপনাকে কিছু দিতে চায় এবং আপনি গ্রহণ করেন।

We accept things.

আমরা জিনিস গ্রহণ করি।

Let’s look at some examples.

আসুন কিছু উদাহরণ দেখি।

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে, 'আমি আমার বন্ধুর কাছ থেকে উপহার গ্রহণ করতে পারি।'

‘I can accept a gift from my friend.’

So if a friend offers a gift to you,

তাই কোনো বন্ধু যদি আপনাকে উপহার দেয়,

you can take it or accept it.

আপনি তা নিতে পারেন বা গ্রহণ করতে পারেন।

The second sentence says,

দ্বিতীয় বাক্যটি বলে,

‘When Tony asked Leslie to marry him,

'যখন টনি লেসলিকে তাকে বিয়ে করতে বলেছিল,

she happily accepted.’

সে আনন্দের সাথে গ্রহণ করেছিল।'

So Tony asked Leslie to marry him and she agreed.

তাই টনি লেসলিকে তাকে বিয়ে করতে বলে এবং সে রাজি হয়।

She accepted this offer.

তিনি এই প্রস্তাব গ্রহণ করেন।

Now, I will talk about ‘except’.

এখন, আমি 'ব্যতীত' সম্পর্কে কথা বলব।

Listen to how I say it.

আমি এটা কিভাবে বলি শুনুন.

It is often a preposition.

এটি প্রায়শই একটি অব্যয়।

It means to not include something.

এর অর্থ কিছু অন্তর্ভুক্ত না করা।

Let’s look at some example sentences.

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে,

‘I like all fruit except grapes.’

'আমি আঙ্গুর ছাড়া সব ফল পছন্দ করি।'

So out of all the fruits,

I like them all,

আমি সব পছন্দ করি,

but I don't like grapes.

কিন্তু আমি আঙ্গুর পছন্দ করি না।

I am showing that I don't want to include grapes in this sentence.

আমি দেখাচ্ছি যে আমি এই বাক্যে আঙ্গুর অন্তর্ভুক্ত করতে চাই না।

The next sentence says,

পরের বাক্যটি বলে,

‘Everyone passed the exam except for Robin.’

'রবিন ছাড়া সবাই পরীক্ষায় পাস করেছে।'

So again, there's a group and everybody is included

তাই আবার, একটি গ্রুপ আছে এবং রবিন ছাড়া সবাই অন্তর্ভুক্ত।

except for Robin.

Robin is not included in the group that passed the exam.

রবিন পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ দলের অন্তর্ভুক্ত নয়।

Now, let's do a checkup.

এখন, একটি চেকআপ করা যাক.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

এই কথোপকথনে, দুটি বাক্য আছে।

In one of the sentences, we should use the word ‘accept’.

একটি বাক্যে, আমাদের 'স্বীকার' শব্দটি ব্যবহার করা উচিত।

In the other, we should use ‘except’.

অন্যটিতে, আমাদের 'ব্যতীত' ব্যবহার করা উচিত।

Take a moment to think about where we use ‘accept’ and ‘except’.

‘A’ says,

'ক' বলছে,

‘Did you _blank_ the new company position?’

A new company position is an offer

and someone can choose to take it.

In that case, you say ‘accept’.

‘Did you accept the new company position?’

‘B’ says, ‘Yes, I now have to work every day _blank_ Sundays.’

This person now has to work almost every day of the week but Sundays.

So we're not including one of the days of the week.

And so we use ‘except’.

Again ‘B’ says, ‘Yes, I now have to work every day except Sundays.’

Now, let's take a look at this as a whole.
