English Communication | Don't Translate Your Language into English

Hello, guys.

مرحبا يا شباب.

My name is fanny.

اسمي فاني.

And in this video, I want to talk to you about communication problems.

وفي هذا الفيديو أريد أن أتحدث إليكم عن مشاكل الاتصال.

And when you're an English teacher working abroad or even if you've traveled,

وعندما تكون مدرسًا للغة الإنجليزية وتعمل في الخارج أو حتى إذا سافرت ،

you do know that there are often communication problems.

فأنت تعلم أنه غالبًا ما تكون هناك مشكلات في الاتصال.

And from my experience as a teacher, I think these problems and often arise because

people try and translate their mother tongue into English.

And my main piece of advice as a teacher, to you, is don't do that.

Don’t try and translate.

لا تحاول الترجمة.

Because every language has their own words and expressions you know…and

لأن كل لغة لها كلماتها وتعبيراتها التي تعرفها ... وأنا

I know that when you're not that fluent, it's reassuring to use your own language and

أعلم أنه عندما لا تكون بطلاقة ، فمن المطمئن أن تستخدم لغتك

translate it.

وترجمتها.

Unfortunately, it doesn't, it's not going to work out.

لسوء الحظ ، لم يحدث ذلك ، لن ينجح الأمر.

And, umm, For example, let's just and take an example.

وأم ، على سبيل المثال ، دعنا فقط ونأخذ مثالاً.

I taught…umm..

لقد درست… umm ..

English in France for a few years.

اللغة الإنجليزية في فرنسا لبضع سنوات.

And French has a lot of expressions and we for example say, umm,

والفرنسية لديها الكثير من التعبيرات ونحن على سبيل المثال نقول ، أم ،

“To get a blue.”

"للحصول على اللون الأزرق."

So that's the expression in French.

هذا هو التعبير بالفرنسية.

“Avoir un bleu.”

"Avoir un bleu."

And that means ‘to get bruised’.

وهذا يعني "التعرض للكدمات".

Okay so ‘a bruise’ in French is literally ‘a blue’.

حسنًا ، كلمة "كدمة" بالفرنسية تعني حرفياً "زرقاء".

So.. but, you can't say, “I got a blue.”

لذا .. لكن لا يمكنك أن تقول ، "لقد حصلت على زرقة."

If you say, “I got a blue,”

إذا قلت ، "لقد حصلت على اللون الأزرق" ،

you… you're actually translating the exact words from French into English.

فأنت ... أنت في الواقع تترجم الكلمات الدقيقة من الفرنسية إلى الإنجليزية.

And I'm not gonna understand what you mean.

ولن أفهم ما تعنيه.

And I've had people say that.

وقد قال لي الناس ذلك. كان

I've had someone one day, umm, say “oh I got a blue,” and I obviously didn't know

لدي شخص ما في يوم من الأيام ، يا أم ، يقول "يا إلهي ، لقد حصلت على اللون الأزرق" ، ومن الواضح أنني لم أكن أعرف

what that meant.

ماذا يعني ذلك.

So…

لذا ...

And that is something that you should avoid doing okay?

وهذا شيء يجب أن تتجنب القيام به بشكل جيد؟

Um… and I got a story about that.

أم ... ولدي قصة عن ذلك.

For example, umm, I was correcting an essay once because I worked in a high school

على سبيل المثال ، يا أم ، كنت أقوم بتصحيح مقال مرة واحدة لأنني عملت في مدرسة ثانوية

And some … this student had written you know an essay in English.

والبعض ... كتب هذا الطالب مقالًا تعرفه بالإنجليزية.

I think she was describing a holiday or something.

أعتقد أنها كانت تصف عطلة أو شيء من هذا القبيل.

And, umm, at some point I can read, “Oh on the last day, I was so sad and because

وفي وقت ما أستطيع أن أقرأ ، "أوه في اليوم الأخير ، كنت حزينًا جدًا ولأنني

I was walking in the garden and suddenly I fell and broke my face.”

كنت أسير في الحديقة وفجأة سقطت وكسرت وجهي."

And it honestly took me a good 10 minutes to understand what she meant.

وبصراحة ، استغرق الأمر مني 10 دقائق جيدة لفهم ما تعنيه.

And it's actually because there's an expression in French,

وهذا في الواقع بسبب وجود تعبير بالفرنسية ،

"suis cassé la figure" Which is literally, “to break your face,”

"suis cassé la figure" والذي يعني حرفيًا ، "كسر وجهك" ،

and it means to hurt yourself.

ويعني إيذاء نفسك.

And so, she wanted to say, “I was walking in the garden, suddenly I fell and hurt myself,”

وهكذا ، أرادت أن تقول ، "كنت أسير في الحديقة ، وفجأة سقطت وأذيت نفسي ،"

But she translated French into English You know…

لكنها ترجمت الفرنسية إلى الإنجليزية كما تعلم ...

Thinking umm, and I guess you know we all think that.

تفكر أم ، وأعتقد أننا جميعًا نعتقد ذلك.

We all think, oh my language is the reference.

كلنا نعتقد ، يا لغتي هي المرجع.

It's the standard and every other language imitates mine.

إنه المعيار وكل لغة أخرى تحاكي لغتي.

And just you know I can simply translate.

وأنت تعلم أنه يمكنني الترجمة ببساطة.

But, unfortunately, you can't.

لكن ، للأسف ، لا يمكنك ذلك.

So as a teacher, again, with years of experience, umm please don't try and do that.

لذا بصفتك مدرسًا ، مرة أخرى ، مع سنوات من الخبرة ، يرجى عدم محاولة القيام بذلك.

Don't translate your mother tongue.

لا تترجم لغتك الأم.

You just have to learn as much as you can.

Watch films.

Read books.

اقرأ كتب.

Try and understand how people talk in English.

حاول أن تفهم كيف يتحدث الناس باللغة الإنجليزية.

You know the expressions that they use, remember them and use them.

But don't translate your mother tongue into English.

لكن لا تترجم لغتك الأم إلى الإنجليزية.
