English Communication | Don't Translate Your Language into English

Hello, guys.

Ciao ragazzi.

My name is fanny.

And in this video, I want to talk to you about communication problems.

E in questo video, voglio parlarti dei problemi di comunicazione.

And when you're an English teacher working abroad or even if you've traveled,

E quando sei un insegnante di inglese che lavora all'estero o anche se hai viaggiato,

you do know that there are often communication problems.

And from my experience as a teacher, I think these problems and often arise because

people try and translate their mother tongue into English.

And my main piece of advice as a teacher, to you, is don't do that.

Don’t try and translate.

Because every language has their own words and expressions you know…and

I know that when you're not that fluent, it's reassuring to use your own language and

so che quando non sei così fluente, è rassicurante usare la tua lingua e

translate it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't, it's not going to work out.

Purtroppo no, non funzionerà.

And, umm, For example, let's just and take an example.

E, umm, per esempio, facciamo solo un esempio.

I taught…umm..

Ho insegnato... umm...

English in France for a few years.

inglese in Francia per alcuni anni.

And French has a lot of expressions and we for example say, umm,

E il francese ha molte espressioni e noi, ad esempio, diciamo, umm,

“To get a blue.”

"Per ottenere un blu".

So that's the expression in French.

«Avoir un bleu.»

And that means ‘to get bruised’.

Okay so ‘a bruise’ in French is literally ‘a blue’.

So.. but, you can't say, “I got a blue.”

Quindi... ma non puoi dire "Ho un blu".

If you say, “I got a blue,”

Se dici "Ho un blu",

you… you're actually translating the exact words from French into English.

And I'm not gonna understand what you mean.

And I've had people say that.

E ho avuto persone che lo dicevano.

I've had someone one day, umm, say “oh I got a blue,” and I obviously didn't know

Un giorno ho avuto qualcuno, umm, che ha detto "oh, ho un blu" e ovviamente non sapevo

what that meant.

So…

And that is something that you should avoid doing okay?

Um… and I got a story about that.

Ehm... e ho una storia a riguardo.

For example, umm, I was correcting an essay once because I worked in a high school

And some … this student had written you know an essay in English.

E alcuni... questo studente aveva scritto sai un saggio in inglese.

I think she was describing a holiday or something.

And, umm, at some point I can read, “Oh on the last day, I was so sad and because

E, umm, a un certo punto posso leggere: "Oh l'ultimo giorno, ero così triste e perché

I was walking in the garden and suddenly I fell and broke my face.”

stavo camminando in giardino e all'improvviso sono caduto e mi sono rotto la faccia".

And it honestly took me a good 10 minutes to understand what she meant.

E onestamente mi ci sono voluti 10 minuti buoni per capire cosa intendesse.

And it's actually because there's an expression in French,

Ed è proprio perché c'è un'espressione in francese,

"suis cassé la figure" Which is literally, “to break your face,”

"suis cassé la figure" che letteralmente significa "spaccarti la faccia"

and it means to hurt yourself.

e significa farti del male.

And so, she wanted to say, “I was walking in the garden, suddenly I fell and hurt myself,”

E così, voleva dire: "Stavo camminando in giardino, all'improvviso sono caduta e mi sono fatta male",

But she translated French into English You know…

ma ha tradotto il francese in inglese Sai...

Thinking umm, and I guess you know we all think that.

Pensando umm, e immagino che tu sappia che lo pensiamo tutti.

We all think, oh my language is the reference.

Pensiamo tutti, oh la mia lingua è il riferimento.

It's the standard and every other language imitates mine.

È lo standard e ogni altra lingua imita la mia.

And just you know I can simply translate.

E sai solo che posso semplicemente tradurre.

But, unfortunately, you can't.

Ma, sfortunatamente, non puoi.

So as a teacher, again, with years of experience, umm please don't try and do that.

Quindi come insegnante, ancora una volta, con anni di esperienza, umm per favore non provare a farlo.

Don't translate your mother tongue.

Non tradurre la tua lingua madre.

You just have to learn as much as you can.

Devi solo imparare il più possibile.

Watch films.

Guardare dei film.

Read books.

Leggere libri.

Try and understand how people talk in English.

Cerca di capire come parlano le persone in inglese.

You know the expressions that they use, remember them and use them.

But don't translate your mother tongue into English.

Ma non tradurre la tua lingua madre in inglese.
