English Communication | Don't Translate Your Language into English

Hello, guys.

Olá, pessoal.

My name is fanny.

And in this video, I want to talk to you about communication problems.

E neste vídeo, quero falar com você sobre problemas de comunicação.

And when you're an English teacher working abroad or even if you've traveled,

E quando você é um professor de inglês trabalhando no exterior ou mesmo se você viajou,

you do know that there are often communication problems.

você sabe que muitas vezes há problemas de comunicação.

And from my experience as a teacher, I think these problems and often arise because

people try and translate their mother tongue into English.

And my main piece of advice as a teacher, to you, is don't do that.

Don’t try and translate.

Não tente traduzir.

Because every language has their own words and expressions you know…and

I know that when you're not that fluent, it's reassuring to use your own language and

translate it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't, it's not going to work out.

And, umm, For example, let's just and take an example.

I taught…umm..

English in France for a few years.

And French has a lot of expressions and we for example say, umm,

E o francês tem muitas expressões e nós, por exemplo, dizemos, umm,

“To get a blue.”

“To get a blue”.

So that's the expression in French.

Então essa é a expressão em francês.

“Avoir un bleu.”

“Avoir un bleu.”

And that means ‘to get bruised’.

Okay so ‘a bruise’ in French is literally ‘a blue’.

Ok, então 'uma contusão' em francês é literalmente 'um azul'.

So.. but, you can't say, “I got a blue.”

Então... mas você não pode dizer: "Eu tenho um azul".

If you say, “I got a blue,”

Se você disser: “I got a blue”,

you… you're actually translating the exact words from French into English.

você... na verdade está traduzindo as palavras exatas do francês para o inglês.

And I'm not gonna understand what you mean.

E eu não vou entender o que você quer dizer.

And I've had people say that.

E eu tive pessoas dizendo isso.

I've had someone one day, umm, say “oh I got a blue,” and I obviously didn't know

Alguém um dia, umm, disse “oh, eu tenho um azul”, e obviamente não sabia

what that meant.

So…

Então…

And that is something that you should avoid doing okay?

E isso é algo que você deve evitar fazer ok?

Um… and I got a story about that.

For example, umm, I was correcting an essay once because I worked in a high school

And some … this student had written you know an essay in English.

E alguns... esse aluno escreveu, sabe, uma redação em inglês.

I think she was describing a holiday or something.

And, umm, at some point I can read, “Oh on the last day, I was so sad and because

E, umm, em algum momento eu posso ler: “Oh, no último dia, eu estava tão triste e porque

I was walking in the garden and suddenly I fell and broke my face.”

estava andando no jardim e de repente caí e quebrei a cara.”

And it honestly took me a good 10 minutes to understand what she meant.

E honestamente demorei uns bons 10 minutos para entender o que ela quis dizer.

And it's actually because there's an expression in French,

E na verdade é porque existe uma expressão em francês,

"suis cassé la figure" Which is literally, “to break your face,”

"suis cassé la figure", que significa literalmente "quebrar a cara",

and it means to hurt yourself.

e significa machucar a si mesmo.

And so, she wanted to say, “I was walking in the garden, suddenly I fell and hurt myself,”

E então, ela queria dizer: “Eu estava andando no jardim, de repente caí e me machuquei”,

But she translated French into English You know…

mas ela traduziu do francês para o inglês

Thinking umm, and I guess you know we all think that.

.

We all think, oh my language is the reference.

Todos nós pensamos, ah, minha linguagem é a referência.

It's the standard and every other language imitates mine.

É o padrão e todas as outras línguas imitam a minha.

And just you know I can simply translate.

E só você sabe que eu posso simplesmente traduzir.

But, unfortunately, you can't.

Mas, infelizmente, você não pode.

So as a teacher, again, with years of experience, umm please don't try and do that.

Então, como professor, novamente, com anos de experiência, umm, por favor, não tente fazer isso.

Don't translate your mother tongue.

Não traduza sua língua materna.

You just have to learn as much as you can.

Você apenas tem que aprender o máximo que puder.

Watch films.

Ver filmes.

Read books.

Leia livros.

Try and understand how people talk in English.

Tente entender como as pessoas falam em inglês.

You know the expressions that they use, remember them and use them.

Você conhece as expressões que eles usam, lembra-se delas e as usa.

But don't translate your mother tongue into English.

Mas não traduza sua língua materna para o inglês.
