English Sounds - T [t] and D [d] Consonants - How to make the T and D Consonants

In this American English Pronunciation video,

في هذا الفيديو للفظ الانكليزية باللهجة الاميركية،

we're going to study how to make the T and D consonant sounds.

سوف ندرس كيف نلفظ الـ T والـ D.

These two sounds are paired together because they take the same mouth position.

يتم إقران هذين الصوتين معًا لأنهما يأخذان نفس شكل الفم.

Tt-- is unvoiced.

هي ساكنة Tt

Meaning only air passes through the mouth.

يعني ان الهواء فقط يمرمن خلال الفم.

And dd-- is voiced.

والـ D هي ملفوظة

Meaning, dd-- you make a sound with the vocal chords.

يعني: D. تصدر صوت بالاوتار الصوتية

These consonants are complicated because the way Americans pronounce them

هذه الحروف الساكنة معقدة، بسبب الطريقة التي يلفظها بها الاميريكيين،

isn't always what you'll find in a dictionary.

ولا تجدها دائما بالقاموس

First, let's talk about the true pronunciation.

اولا، لنتكلم عن اللفظ الحقيقي،

These are stop consonants which means there are two parts.

هذه : Stop Consonants

ما يعني ان هنالك جزئين

First, a stop in the airflow, and second, a release.

اولا: توقف في تدفق الهواء.

ثانيا: افلات الهواء

We stop here, by closing the vocal chords.,

نتوقف هنا، باقفال الاوتار الصوتية.

and lift the tongue so the flat, top part is at the roof of the mouth

ونرفع اللسان، حتى، المنطقة المسطحة العلية، تصل الى سقف الفم.

It's far forward, almost touching the back of the top front teeth.

انها تتقدم الى الامام، حتى تكاد تلمس المنطقة الخلفية من الجهة الامامية من الاسنان

The teeth come together and we release all three parts at once.

الاسنان تنضم معا، ونرخي الثلاثة الاجزاء معا

The tongue comes down from the roof of the mouth,

اللسان ينزل الى تحت، من سقف الفم،

the teeth part,

جزء الاسنان،

and we release the air in the throat

ونحل الهواء في حنجرة.

Tt---

Dd---

Just like with other stop consonants,

كما هي الحال مع الاحرف الساكنة للتوقف

we want to release them into the next sound.

نريد ان نرخيهم للصوت التالي.

Let's look at the true T and D consonants

لننظر الى الـ T والـ D الحقيقيتان الحروف الساكنة

up close and in slow motion.

عن قرب، وبالحركة البطيئة.

The teeth come together and the top , front part of the tongue is at the roof of the mouth.

الاسنان تقترب من بعضها، والجزء الامامي العلوي من اللسان، على حافة الفم

The air stops in the throat.

الهواء يتوقف في الحنجرة،

Then the teeth part and the tongue pulls down to release.

بعدها الاسنان تتباعد، واللسان ينخفض ليسرب الهواء.

The word 'desk'.

الكلمة: desk

The teeth closed and the tongue is at the roof of the mouth.

الاسنان تقفل، واللسان على سقف الفم.

Then everything releases right into the EH as in Bed vowel.

وبعدها كلهم يرخون ليسربوا الهواء، كما في الحرف بـ Bed

The word 'stick'.

الكلمة: stick،

The teeth close and the tongue is at the roof of the mouth.

الاسنان تغلق واللسان على سقف الفم،

Then everything releases right into the IH as in Sit vowel.

بعدها كل شي يرخي عند "الاي" كما الحرف الساكن في sit

The word 'expect'.

الكلمة expect،

The teeth nearly close and the tongue is at the roof of the mouth.

الاسنان تكاد تغلق، واللسان على سقف الفم

Then the teeth release just a bit.

بعدها الاسنان ترخي قليلا فقط،

There's no next sound to release into.

ليس هنالك صوت اخر لتنتقل اليه.

So the movement is minimal for the release.

لذلك الحركة هي بسيطة جدا للتصريف.

The tongue releases down.

اللسان يرخي الى الاسفل.

من الممكن ان نلفظ الـ D الحقيقية

It's possible to make the true D without the teeth coming together.

بدون ان تجتمع الاسنان مع بعضها.

Said. Dd-- dd---

said

Because of the voice in this sound, we can still release it.

بسبب اللفظة في هذا الصوت يمكننا ان نطلقها

Said. Dd--

said

But to make the True T,

ولكن لنلفظ الT الحقيقية،

the teeth do have to come together or nearly together.

الاسنان يجب ان تلامس بعضها، او ان تكاد ان تلامس بعضها،

Set. Tt--

set

That was the True T and True D.

هذه كانت الـ T الحقيقية، والـ D الحقيقية.

If the T or D are at the end of a sentence,

اذا كانت الـ T أو الـ D في آخر الجملة،

or if the next word begins with a consonant,

او الكلمة التالية تبداء بحرف ساكن،

then you make a Stop T or Stop D.

عندها نلفظ : T التوقف والـ D التوقف

We stop the air, but we don't release it.

نوقف الهواء لكن لا نطلقه.

You lift your tongue into position,

ترفع لسانك الى موضعه،

stop the air, and that's it.

توقف الهواء، وكفى.

For example, the word 'mad', dd---

على سبيل المثال الكلمة: mad

Mad-d-d-d--

mad

Notice the last sound is d--

لاحظ ان آخر صوت هو

The beginning of the D, dd--

بداية الـ D

with the vocal chords engaged because it's a voiced consonant.

مع تدخل الاوتار الصوتية، لانه صوت لحرف ساكن.

I don't release.

وهذا كل شيئ، لا ارخي.

A release would sound like this: mad-dd--

اذا ارخينا يصدر صوتا مثل هذا:

But instead, I say, mad-dd--

لكن في حين أقول : mad

leaving my tongue tip up.

تاركا راس لساني فوق.

Now, let's look at an example with a T followed by another consonant.

الان لنرى مثلا حيت الـT ياتي بعدها حرف ساكن آخر.

The phrase "not for me".

الجملة: not for me

Here, the T is followed by F.

هنا الـ T يتبعها حرف F.

I stop the air, not--

اوقف الهواء،

And then with out releasing, go into the F sound.

وبعدها، بدون ان ارخي، اذهب الى الحرف F.

Not--for... not for me.

With stop consonants, we do stop the air in the throat.

مع الحروف الساكنة للتوقف، نوقف الهواء في الحنجرة.

So I don't have to move my tongue up into position for the T to stop the sound.

لذلك ليس علي ان احرك لساني الى الاعلى، لوضعية الـT، لايقاف الصوت.

In this phrase, "not for me",

في هذه الجملة

I touch the roof of the mouth with a part of the tongue that's further back.

المس سقف فمي بجزء من لساني الذي هو في الوراء.

Not--

My tongue tip can stay down.

راس لساني يمكن ان يبقى تحت.

This helps me make the stop even shorter.

هذا يمكنني ان اجعل التوقف حتى اقصر.

So I can quickly go in to the next sound.

حتى اتمكن ان انتقل بسرعة الى الصوت التالي.

Not for-- Not for--

I'll bring my tongue up for the Stop T if the next sound

ارفع لساني للاعلى ل تاء التوقف اذا كان الحرف التالي

also requires the tongue being at the roof of the mouth.

يتطلب ايضا ان يكون اللسان على سقف الفم

When I say "not for me",

عندما أقول:

instead of "noT for me".

عوضا عن:

The words are more connected and the sentence is smoother.

الكلمات متصلة اكثر، والجملة أنعم.

That's what we want in American English.

هذا ما نريده باللهجة الاميريكية.

And that's why we use the Stop T instead of the True T in these cases.

ولهذا نستعمل تاء التوقف، بدلا من التاء الحقيقية، في هذه الحالات.

Not for me.

Let's look at a stop up close and in slow motion.

لنلق نظرة على توقف، عن قريب وفي سرعة بطيئة.

Here's the word 'what'.

هنا الكلمة : what

I don't release the T at the end.

لا ارخي التاء بالاخر.

The tongue goes to the roof of the mouth.

اللسان يذهب الى سقف الفم.

But then I just stop the air.

وبعدها اوقف الهواء فقط.

My teeth aren't together and I don't release.

اسناني ليست متصلة ببعضها، ولا ارخي.

The lips simply close: what--

الشفاه تقفل ببساطة.

Here's what it looks like with a True T.

هذا ما يبدو بتاء حقيقية.

The teeth come together, then a sudden release.

الاسنان تتقارب، وبعدها اطلاق سريع.

Compare the ending. The top is 'what' with a Stop T.

قارن النهايات. فوق هو وات، بتاء توقف.

And the bottom is 'what' with a True T.

وفي الاسفل، وات مع تاء حقيقية.

For the Stop T, the teeth don't come together

لتاء التوقف، الاسنان لا تتقارب معا

because they don't need to release.

لانها ليست بحاجة ان تصرف.

The air simply stops with the tongue in position.

الهواء يتوقف فقط مع اللسان بالموضع.

For the True T, we bring the teeth together so the tongue, teeth, and air release.

للتاء الحقيقية، نقرب الاسنان لبعضها، حتى يرخي اللسان والاسنان والهواء.

The Stop T and D relate to the True T and D.

تاء التوقف، وال"دي"، ترتبطان بالتاء الحقيقية، والـ "دي".

We simply skip the release.

فقط نتخطى التصريف

But when the T or D come between 2 vowels or diphthongs,

لكن عندما التاء ام ال "دي" ياتيان بين ساكنين، او حرفان يكتبان مع بعض.

or after an R and before a vowel or diphthong,

او بعد R ، او قبل حرف متحرك، او الحرفان المتصلان.

we make a different sound.

نعمل صوت مختلف،

One exception, if the T or D starts a stressed syllable,

باستثناء واحد. اذا الـ T او ال D يبدئان بتقاطع مشدد.

then it's a True T or D.

عندها هي "تي " و"دي" حقيقيتان.

But in other cases, when the T or D consonants come between two vowels or diphthongs,

ولكن في حالات اخرى، الحرفان الساكنان"تي" وال "دي" ياتيان بين اثنتان متحركان و الاحرف المتصلة.

or after an R and before a vowel or diphthong,

او بعد "ار" قبل حرف متحرك.

we make a flap sound.

نعمل صوت رفرفة.

This is different from the True and Stop T and D

هذا يختلف عن ال T وال D الحقيقيتين،

because we don't stop the sound, we don't hold anything.

لاننا لا نوقف الصوت، لا نكبت شيئ.

We simply let the front part of the tongue bounce against the roof of the mouth

اننا فقط ببساطة، نضع الجزء الامامي من اللسان، يرتد على الجزء الامامي من الفم.

without stopping the flow of the air.

بدون ان يوقف تدفق الهواء.

The Flap T and Flap D sound the same.

ال T وال D المرفرفتان، يكونان متشابهتان.

The Flap T and Flap D sound the same. The T in 'matter', is the same as the D in 'madder'.

ال T في matter، هي نفسها كالـ D في madder.

Matter. Madder.

This sounds just like the R in many languages.

هذا يشابه الصوت R في عدة لغات.

But in American English, it's the Flap T or Flap D.

ولكن في الانجليزية الاميريكية، انا ال T أو D المرفرفتان.

In my videos, I use the D symbol for this sound.

في فيديوهاتي، انا استعمل رمز ال d لهذا الصوت.

This sound, however, isn't a stop consonant anymore.

لكن هذا الصوت ليس حرف ساكن متوقف بعد الان.

Let's look at some words with a flap up close and in slow motion.

لنلق نظرة على بعض الكلمات تحتوي على رفرفة، وننظر لها عن قرب وبطريقة بطيئة.

The word 'city'. Here the T comes between two vowel sounds so it's a flap.

الكلمة city، هنا الt تاتي بين حرفين ساكنين. فاذا انا مرفرفة.

The tongue is in position for the IH vowel.

اللسان في وضع لحرف الـ" اي"

Watch how it flaps against the roof of the mouth quickly.

لاحظوا كيف ترفرف بسرعة في سقف الفم.

The air doesn't stop.

الهواء لا يتوقف.

mouth quickly. The air doesn't stop. That flap was fast even in slow motion.

هذه الرفرفة سريعة، حتى في السرعة البطيئة.

Let's watch again.

لنراها من جديد.

The whole word one more time.

الكلمة بكاملها، مرة اخرى.

The word 'party'. Here, the T comes after an R and before a vowel.

الكلمة party، هنا ال T تاتي بعد R وقبل متحركة.

So it's a flap. The tongue is back and up for the R.

لهذا هي رفرفة. اللسان متراجع ومرتفع للـ R

Watch it flap.

لاحظوها ترفرف.

And come down from the flap.

وتنزل من الرفرفة.

The air didn't stop. Watch the whole word one more time.

الهواء لم يتوقف. لاحظوا الكلمة كاملة مرة اخرى.

The word 'tidy'. Here, the D comes after a diphthong and before a vowel

الكلمة tidy، هنا ال d تاتي بعد الحرفان وقبل حرف متحرك.

so it's a Flap D, watch the tongue flap.

فاذا انا d مرفرفة. لاحظوا اللسان يرفرف.

The whole word one more time.

الكلمة كاملة مرة اخرى.

To isolate the sound, try holding out the sound before and after.

لعزل الصوت، حاول ان تواصل بالصوت قبل وبعد.

Party.

Then you can really feel the tongue flap bouncing against the roof of the mouth.

عندها يمكنك ان تشعر فعلا باللسان يرفرف. يرتد على سقف الفم.

Remember, this isn't represented in dictionaries.

تذكر، هذا ليس مزكورا بالقواميس.

They will show the symbol for the True T: Party.

سوف يرونك رمز ال t الحقيقية.

Even though Americans pronounce it 'party'.

حتى لو كان الاميريكيين يلفظونها "باردي"

So remember the rule.

فاذا تذكر القاعدة.

When a T or D comes between vowels and diphthongs,

عندما ال t او ال d تاتيان بين حرف علة ومركبة.

or after an R before a vowel or diphthong, like 'party',

او بعد R، قبل متحرك او مركبة. مثل

unless it starts a stressed syllable, flap the tongue.

اللا اذا كانت تبداء بـتقطيع مشدد. اذا رفرف اللسان.

Sometimes, we drop the T or D completely.

احيانا نتخلى عن الT وال D بالكامل.

We leave the sounds out. This is an American habit.

نترك الصوت بدون استعمال. هذه عادة اميريكية.

If you look up the words in the dictionary, the sounds are there.

اذا بحثت عن الكلمات في القاموس، الاصوات هناك.

There are two cases when you might hear an American drop a T or D.

First, when the T or D comes between two consonant sounds.

For example, 'exactly'.

This word has the K, T, L consonants together.

But most people pronounce it without the T.

Dropping the T between two consonants simplifies the pronunciation.

Also, we often drop the T when it comes after an N.

ايضا نسقط الـ T عندما تاتي بعد N

Many Americans say 'cenner' instead of 'center'.

عدة اميريكيين يقولون: "cenner" بدل : "Center".

Or 'innerview' instead of 'interview'.

او "innerview" بدل "interview".

There is no way to make a Stop T sound on its own
