So we had divided our family into two teams

and both ‘team’ and ‘two’ are stressed. Team two.

But ‘two’ is the most stressed because

that is the part that makes it different from team one.

And actually, I wrote that poorly. That should look like this. Team two.

In English, we don't want choppy words within a thought group.

بالانجليزية,نحن لا نريد كلمات متلاطمة ضمن مجموعة افكار

We don't want them to feel separate.

We always want them to feel very connected.

The intonation, the pitch, always changes smoothly.

Team two. So the ending M right into the T with no break.

What's going on with the P here? I'm not releasing it. Up. Ppp--

I'm not releasing it with a puff of air, my lips closed, that cuts off the sound, that's the stop part of the stop consonant.

انا لم احرره مع نفخة من الهواء,شفتاى مغلقة,و هذا قطع الصوت,و هذا هو الجزء الثابت من الصوت الساكن

But then they don't open releasing the air.

و لكن هم لم يفتحوا لتحرير الهواء بعد ذلك

This is fairly normal. It's fairly common to drop the release part of a stop consonant

و هذا طبيعى جدا, ان تسقط جزء خروج الهواء من الصوت الساكن هذا شائع جدا

when it comes at the end of a thought group. Listen up.

You can see my lips come together.

That gives the idea of the P and then that's it.

I move on to my next phrase.

‘Listen up’ is a phrasal verb.

انتبهوا, تكون جملة فعلية

How is it different from ‘listen’?

كيف تكون مختلفة عن استمعوا؟

It's something you would use if you're trying to get the attention of someone or even more often, of a group of people.

انه اسلوب تستخدمه عندما تريد ان تلفت انتباه احدهم او حتى احيانا مجموعة من الاشخاص

This is something you might say if you feel like people have not been paying attention

انه شىء ربما تستخدمه عندما تشعر ان مجموعة من الناس لا تبدى انتباه

and now you really need them to.

و انت حقا فحاجة لهم الان

You're saying: I need everyone's attention because what I'm about to say is really important.

انت تقول: انا احتاج الى انتباه كل شخص لأن ما اقوله مهم جدا

I'm looking at you.

I say this right as someone on my team cheers me on with a little high-pitched: woot woot!

اقول هذا كشخص ما من فريقى يحينى بنغمة عالية قليلا: وووو ووو!

That's just something, a phrase you might use

هذا الشىء , جملة ربما تستخدمها

to show excitement or to cheer someone on in a competition.

لتظهر شيئا من الاثارة او لتشجع شخص ما فى مسابقة

So I say I'm looking at you.

هكذا اقول انا اشاهدكم

‘Look’ and ‘you’ get the most stress in this phrase.

"look"و" you" لهم معظم التشديد فى الجملة

A couple things happen here. First of all,

حدثين حدثوا هنا. فى البداية

well, we have the contraction ‘I am’ to I'm

حسنا, نحن لدينا اختصار"I am" و "I'm"

which is said quickly: I’m. I'm. I'm looking— I'm looking—

حيث تقال سريعا: I'm looking. -I'm looking-

‘Look’ being the stressed syllable there, then I changed the NG sound, I just make it an N sound. Lookin.

look' يكون الجزء المشدد هنا بعد ذلك غيرت صوت ال NG, جعلته صوت N فقط

So I make the sound at the front of my mouth with the front of my tongue

لذلك نطقت الصوت من الجزء الامامى من فمى مع الجزء الامامى من لسانى

rather than at the back of my mouth with the back of my tongue.

فضلا عن الجزء الخلفى من فمى و الجزء الخلفى من لسانى

I'm looking at you. Lookin.

This is a little bit more casual of a pronunciation

هذا قليلا نطق اكثر طبيعية

and we definitely change the NG to the N

و نحن بالتأكيد غيرنا من NG ل N

quite a bit in -ing words but I don't recommend doing it all the time.

الى حدما فى كلمات -ing لكن انا لا اذكى فعل هذا كل الوقت

There's definitely such thing as doing it too much.

يوجد بالتأكيد اشياء كهذة تحث كثيرا

We tend to do it more with the -ing words that are the most common.

What's going on with ‘at you’?

ماذا يحدث فى' at you؟

First of all, I reduce the vowel in ‘at’ so it's: uh- uh- uh- the schwa.

مبئيا,لقد قمت بتقليص الصوت المتحرك فى ' at'لذلك فهو شوا

Then we hear a CH sound. Where's that coming from?

بعد ذلك نحن نسمع صوت تش. من أين يأتى هذا الصوت؟

When a word ends in a T and the next word is ‘you’ or ‘your’,

عندما تنتهى كلمة ب T و الكلمة المجاورة هى you' or' 'your'

it's not uncommon to combine those to link them together with a CH sound: choo— choo—

I must have thought that somebody on my team had not been paying very good attention because I say ‘listen up’

من المؤكد انى اعتقدت ان شخص ما من فريقى لا يعطى انتباه جيد لذلك انا اقول انتبهوا

which means what I’m saying next really matters,

حيث يعنى ان القادم الذى ساقوله سيحدث

I’m about to start, and then I say ‘I’m looking at you.’

انا سأبدا, و لذلك اقول انا اشاهدكم

specifically calling out someone on my team.

خاصة لانادى شخص فى فريقى

I’m looking at you.

Three. Two. One.

ثلالثة, اثنان,واحد.

Then my nephew gives me a countdown for the timer.

بعد ذلك قام ابن اخى باعطائى عدل تنازلى للوقت

Three separate content words.

ثلاث كلمات منفصلة

Three.

ثلاثة

Two.

اثنان

One.

واحد

All with an up-down shape of stress.

كل هذا مع شكل صعود و هبوط من التشديد

Three. Two. One.

ثلاثة,اثنان,ةاحد

We never want flat pitches in our stressed words.

نحن لا نريد ابدا درجة مستوية من التشديد

This up-down shape of stress, this change of pitch of intonation,

هذا الصعود و الهبوط هو شكل من اشكال التشديد من درجات النغم

is what marks a stressed syllable. It's very natural American English to do this.

و الجزء المشدد له علامة. هذا الاسلوب هو انجليزى امريكى طبيعى جدا

Okay this is something that you use…

حسنا هذا شىء تستخدمه

Okay this is something--

حسنا هذا شىء

So the words ‘this’ and ‘is’, they would usually be said very quickly.

هكذا كلمة 'this' و 'is', انهم احيانا يقالوا سريعا جدا

This is something—

هذا شىء ما

but as I read it, I'm still thinking about what to say,

و لكن كما قرأت, انا لازلت افكر فى كيف اقولها

so they get made longer. This is—

لذلك اصبحت اطول. هذا

They're both turned into stressed syllables but this is not how it would normally be pronounced.

كلا منهم تحولوا الى اجزاء مشددة لكن هذة ليست كما تنطق طبيعى

‘This is’ becomes: this is— this is— this is something— this is something—

This is' اصبحت: this is --this is -- something--this is something

That's the change that's important in conversational American English.

هذا هو التغيير هذا مهم فى المحادثة الانجليزية الامريكية

Now here of course it's not quite conversational. This is different. I'm playing a game

الان بالطبعانها ليست محادثة الى حد ما. هناك اختلاف,فأنا ألعب لعبة

and I'm taking more time as I'm thinking on the spot.

و اتحدث اكتر من مرة و كأنى أفكر بصوت عال

That means thinking without prior preparation about what to say.

و هذا يعنى تفكير بدون تحضير سابق عن ما أقوله

This is something—

هذا شىء

This is something—

هذا شىء

This is something that you use—

هذا شىء تستخدمه

Something that you use—

So here we have a T followed by ‘you’. I do not make it a CH.

لدينا هنا T تبعت ب 'you. انا لم اقم بجعلها تش

I make it a Stop T: that you use—

لقد جعلتها T ساكنة: that you use

but I do reduce the AH vowel.

لكن خفضت صوت ال AH

‘That’ becomes: that— that— that—

'That اصبحت : that

This helps me say this word more quickly.

و هذا ساعدنى لقول الكلمة أسرع

That you use--

ما تستخدمه

That you use to sweep the floor.

ما تستخدمه لتكنس الأرض

To sweep the floor--

Okay, another example of an over pronunciation of a word.

حسنا, مثال اخر على نطق الكلمة

The word ‘to’ almost never pronounced this way in conversational English. To.

كلمة 'to لا تنطق معظم الوقت هكذا فى المحادثة الانجليزية

Why did I do that? I was thinking of what is the right word to say.

لماذا نطقتها هكذا؟ لقد كنت أفكر فى ما هى أفضل كلمة لأقولها

So in conversational English, it would be: to sweep—

لذلك فى المحادثة الانجليزية من الممكن ان تكون: to -- sweep

to— to— to—

to

The OO vowel reduces to the schwa: to sweep— to sweep— to sweep the floor—

صوت ال oo انخفض الى الشوا to sweep the floor

to sweep the floor—

لتكنس الأرض

to sweep the floor—

لتكنس الأرض

to sweep the floor and you plug it in.

لتكنس الأرض و تدخلها ببعضها

To sweep the floor and you plug it in.

تكنس الأرض و تدخلها ببعضها

Sweep.

Floor.

الارض

To sweep the floor.

لتكنس الارض

Sweep the floor. Sweep the floor.

Listen to these three words and pay attention to the stress pattern. It's long, short, long.

استمع جيدا لهؤلاء الكلمات الثلاث و اعطى انتباه لنمط التشديد. انه طويل,قصير,طويل.

Sweep the floor. Sweep the floor. Sweep the floor.

تكنس الأرض

Sweep the floor.

تكنس الأرض

So the word ‘the’ doesn't have this up-down shape of stress. It's flatter and it’s said very quickly.

كلمة 'the لا تملك شكل الصعود و الهبوط من التشديد . انها مستوية و تقال سريعا

Sweep the-- sweep the-- sweep the floor and you plug it in.

Drop the D so even though I hold this word out a little bit as I think

اسقط ال D

and I don't reduce the vowel, the vowel is still ah.

ولم اقم بتقليص صوت ال ah

I do drop the D, just a very common reduction of that word.

لقد قمت بحذف ال D كتقليص شائع جدا لهذة الكلمة

You plug it in—

و تضمها لبعضها

So here we have three words: plug it in,

where you have two links of ending consonant to beginning vowel: plug it— git— git—

So you can think of the ending consonant G

Here, again, we link the ending T right into the vowel IH and it changes to a flap T.

Why does it do that? Because it comes between two vowels.

‘Plug in’ is a phrasal verb and we use this with electronics or things that charge,

plug in يكون جملة فعلية و نستخدمه مع الالكترونيات او الاشياء التى تحتاج شحن كهربائى

where you have the plug and you either insert it into the socket in the wall,

حيث تمتلك فيشة و أيضا ملحقة بمقبس فى الحائط

or maybe you're inserting the plug into the device itself like your phone.

او ربما ملحقة بالجهاز نفسه مثل هاتفك

This is the phrasal verb to ‘plug in’.

هذة هى الجملة الفعلية ل plug in

Plug it in— plug it in— plug it in—

plug it in

People guess broom. Broom.

الناس خمنت المقشة

No, you don't plug a broom in.

لا, انت لا تشحن المقشة

This was my, my main clue: sweep.

هذا كان دليلى الرئيسى: تكنس

Of course people are going to guess broom but when I said plug it in,

بالتأكيد الناس ستخمن المقشة و لكن حين قلت تشحنها

remember this has to do with electronics, so that was my big clue. It's not a broom.

تذكروا انا ذلك يحتاج كهرباء, لذلك هذا كان دليلى الاكبر. انها لم تكن مقشة

No, you plug it in.

لا, انت تشحنها

Okay so there's some shouting here. I say ‘no, you plug it in.’ no. No.

حسنا يوجد هنا بعض التقليل. لقد قلت لا, انت تشحنها

Just like ‘Three. Two. One.’, it's a one word thought group, and it has that up-down shape. No.

انها ك ثلاثة,اثنان,واحد. انها كلمة واحدة من مجموعة, وتمتلك شكل الصعود و الهبوط. لا

Then I say ‘you plug it in’

ثم أقول "انت تشحنها"

as people are yelling and again we have this nice linking ending G into the beginning vowel

كصراخ الناس و مجددا نحن لدينا هذا الاتصال الجميل النهاية G للمتحرك المبتدأ

and then the flap T to link these two words. Plug it in.

و بعد ذلك الT المستوية لربط هاتين الكلمتين, plug it in

And as I do that, they get, they get the idea.

‘Vacuum’, they yell.

- Broom. - Vacuum!

But I need to get them to say ‘vacuum cleaner’ so I give them one more clue.

و لكنى احتجت لجعلهم يقولون مكنسة كهربائية لذلك اعطتهم مثال زائد

- Broom. - Vacuum!

Uh, it’s two words.

اها, انهم كلمتان

It's two words.

اها, انهم كلمتان

'Two words' stress there.

كلمتان' التشديد هناك

'The word ‘it's’ lower in pitch, flatter, faster.

كلمة 'it's منخفضة فى درجة النغم و مستوية و سريعة

Two words.

كلمتان

Two words. Two words.

كلمتان

- Two words. - Vacuum cleaner.

كلمتان مكنسة كهربائية

Vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaner.

مكنسة كهرائية

So now they're stressing ‘clean’ because that’s what makes the word different from vacuum.

لذلك الاثنان مشددين لان هذا ما يصنع اختلاف لكلمة 'cleaner من كلمة 'vacum

Although normally, in a compound word like this, it's the first word that is stressed,

وبالرغم من طبيعةحدوث ذلك فى الكلمات المركبة,الكلمة الاولى دائما مشددة

so that would be: vacuum cleaner.

لذلك تكون: مكنسة كهربائية

Other examples of compound words: eyeball.

امثلة أخرى عن الكلمات المركبة: عين الكرة

First word is stressed.

الاكلمة الاولى مشددة

Mailman.

رجل البريد

First word is stressed.

الكلمة الاولى مشددة

Basketball.

كرة السلة

First word is stressed. In this case, well as always, it's only the stressed syllable.

الكلمة الاولى مشددة. فى هذة الحالة , انه المقطع المشدد الوحيد

So bas— basketball.

لذلك كرة السلة

The first syllable is stressed.

المقطع الاول مشدد

Compound words, first word is stressed.

الكلمات المركبة,الكلمة الاولى مشددة

Let's listen to the whole conversation one more time.
