When you have to say NO, sometimes you want to add nuance.

How can you say ‘no’ without being rude?

Also, what do Americans really mean when they say “I don’t think so”?

ايضا,ماذا يعني الامريكيين حقيقةْ عندما يقولون "لا اظن ذلك"

Do they mean no? There are lots of ways you can say ‘no’ while being kind and showing appreciation.

هل يقصدون لا؟ هناك العديد من الطرق يمكنك ان تقول "لا" بينما تكون مهذب و مظهرا الاحترام

When I was living in Germany, I was frustrated that I didn’t have any phrases to use

عندما كنت اعيش في المانيا, كنت محبطة من هذا. لم يكن لدي ايَ جملة لاستخدامها

in these kinds of situations. I wished I had various ways to say ‘no’ or to turn down an invitation.

في هذه الانواع من الحالات. تمنيت ان يكون لدي طرق عديدة لاقول "لا" او اعتذر عن دعوة.

Today we’re going to go over lots of ways to say ‘no’ in English, in various situations.

اليوم سنمر من خلال العديد من الطرق لقول "لا" في الانكليزي. في حالات متنوعة

Situation 1: You’re out to eat and you’ve eaten, and your server asks if you’d like dessert,

الحالة 1: انت في الخارج للاكل و قد اكلت, والخادم سالك اذا كنت تريد الحلوى

or if you’d like to see a dessert menu, or if there’s anything else you’d like to order.

او اذا كنت تريد رؤية قائمة الحلوى, او هنالك اي شيْ آخر تريد ان تطلبه

You could say a simple:

يمكنك القول ببساطة:

No, thank you.

لا, شكرا لك

or No thanks.

او لا, شكرا

OR, I don’t think so.

او, لا اعتقد ذلك

We use ‘I don’t think’ to mean we’re not sure.

نستخدم "لا اعتقد ذلك" لنقصد بها لسنا متأكدين

Rachel, do they sell diapers at the corner store?

راشل, هل يبيعون الحفاضات في زاوية المتجر؟

I don’t think so, but I’m not sure.

لا أظن ذلك, لكنني لست متأكدة.

Are they open late?

هل يفتحون باكراَ؟

I don’t think so.

لا أظن ذلك.

Again, that means probably not, but I’m not 100% sure.

مرة اخرى, هذا يعني غالبا لا, لكنني غير متأكدة 100%

So if we’re asked if we know something, and we’re not sure, we can say

اذا اذا سُئلنا اذا كنا نعلم عن شيء, وكنا غير متأكدين, يمكن ان نقول:

“I don’t think so.” But if we’re asked if we WANT something, “I don’t think so” simply means ‘no’.

لا اظن ذلك. لكن اذا سالنا في ما اذا اردنا شيء, لا أظن ذلك ببساطة تعني "لا"

Do you want to try this on in another size?

هل تريد ان تجرب هذه بمقاس آخر؟

I don’t think so.

لا أظن ذلك. (لا)

Do you want dessert?

هل تريد الحلوى؟

I don’t think so.

لا أظن ذلك. (لا)

Do you want to supersize that order?

هل تريد تضخيم هذا الطلب؟

I don’t think so.

لا أظن ذلك.

Situation 2: Someone asks you to do something you don’t want to do or can’t do.

الحالة 2: احد ما سألك لتفعل شيء لا تريد ان تفعله او لا تستطيع فعله.

This could be a colleague at work asking you to work on a project, or someone, say, at church

هذا سيكون زملاء العمل يسألونك للعمل على مشروع, أو احد ما قال في الكنيسة

asking if you can do something. Can you help plan the retreat this year?

يسألونك لفعل شيء. هل تستطيع مساعدة خطة الاستقالة هذه السنة؟

This is, someone asks you to do something extra, to take on an extra task or extra work.

هذا احد ما يسألك لفعل شيء اضافي, لاخذ مهمة اضافية أو عمل اضافي

Not something social. We’ll get to that in a minute.

لا شيء اجتماعي. سنحصل على هذا في دقيقة.

Here are some phrases you could use to turn down something like this:

هذه بعض الجمل يمكنك استخدامها للاعتذار عن شيء مثل هذا.

Sorry, I’ve got too much going on already.

آسفة, لدي الكثير لأفعله مسبقا.

Sorry, I can’t take on any extra work.

آسفة. لا يمكنني ان آخذ عمل اضافي.

Sorry, I can’t take on any extra work. Take on, a phrasal verb.

آسفة. لا يمكنني ان آخذ عمل اضافي.

Sorry, I can’t take on any extra work.

آسفة. لا يمكنني ان آخذ عمل اضافي.

Sorry, I don’t have time.

آسفة, ليس لدي وقت

Sorry, I don’t have time.

آسفة, ليس لدي وقت

That one is nice and simple. Sorry, I don’t have time.

هذه جميلة وبسيطة. آسفة, ليس لدي وقت

Unfortunately, I’m not going to have time to do that.

لسوء الحظ, ليس لدي وقت لأفعل هذا.

Unfortunately, I can’t take that on.

لسوء الحظ, لايمكنني اخذ هذه

Using the word ‘unfortunately’ shows that you have some level of disappointment.

استخدام كلمة "لسوء الحظ" تُظهر انه لديك بعض من مستويات خيبة الأمل

It’s something you’d like to do, or you can see that it would be good for you to do,

مثل شيء تريد ان تفعله, او تستطيع, وانه شيء جيد لك لتفعله

or you can see that you’re disappointing someone by saying no. Unfortunately, I can’t.

او يمكنك ان ترى انك تخيب آمال احدهم من خلال قول "لا". لكن "لسوء الحظ" لا أستطيع

You could also say:

يمكنك ايضا قول:

I’d like to, but I’ve got too much on my plate to take that on.

يسرني ان افعل ذلك, لكنني لدي الكثير على طبقي لاقوم به

Too much on my plate – that’s an idiom that means you’re busy, and last week I did a video

"لدي الكثير على طبقي" هو مصطلح يعني انك مشغول, والأسبوع الماضي قمت بفيديو

that went over 16 different ways to say you’re busy.

يشرح 16 طريقة مختلفة لقول انك مشغول.

Often, when you decline something you add that you’re busy or what your plans are,

غالبا, عندما ترفض شيء تضيف:انك مشغول او تشرح خططك.

so check out that video if you haven’t already. You’ll learn some great phrases to use

when you need to decline something.

You could say, “I don’t think I can make that work.”

يمكنك ان تقول,"لا اعتقد انني استطيع القيام بهذا العمل".

I don’t think I can make that work.

لا اعتقد انني استطيع القيام بهذا العمل.

Again, we’re using “I don’t think” here to mean “no.” It’s sort of a softer way than just saying a flat ‘no’.

مرة اخرى, نستخدم لا أظن" هنا لتعني "لا". نوع من الطرق اللينة مقارنة بقول "لا" فقط.

Rachel, can you help set up for the event on Monday?

راشل, هل يمكنك المساعدة بتحضير الحدث الاثنين؟

I don’t think I can make that work. Sorry.

Hey, can you stay the night for a client phone call?

مرحباَ, هل يمكنك البقاْء الليلة لاتصالات الزبائن؟

I don’t think I can make that work. I have to pick up my kid at six.

لا اعتقد انني استطيع القيام بهذا العمل. يجب ان آخذ اطفالي عالساعة السادسة

You could say, “not this time” if it’s something you’re interested in in the future.

يمكنك القول ايضاَ. "لا ليس في هذا الوقت" اذا كان الشيء مهتم به في المستقبل

You could even say something like “Not this time, but please ask me again. I’d like to try to do that next time.”

يمكنك ايضا قول شيء مثل "ليس في هذا الوقت, لكن رجاء اسالني مرة اخرى اود ان افعل هذا في المرة التالية"

You could also try showing your appreciation. For example: "Thanks for thinking of me, but I can't."

يمكنك ايضاَ محاولة اظهار الامتنان. مثال:"شكرا لتفكيرك بي, ولكنني لا أستطيع.

OR, "I'm honored, but I can't." OR, "I'd really like to, but I can't make it work this time."

او , "اتشرف, لكنني لا أ ستطيع" او,"احب ان افعل ذلك حقيقةَ , لكنني لا استطيع القيام بهذا في هذا الوقت.

These all have 'but'.

كل هذا فيه "لكن"

These kind of statement plus 'but', is something we would use a lot in social situations with friends, too.

هذا النوع من الحالات + "لكن", هو شيء نرغب باستخدامه بكثرة في الحالات الاجتماعية مع الأصدقاء ايضا

That brings us to Situation 3: A friend asks you to do something social, but you can’t.

وهذا ينقلنا للحالة 3 : صديق يسألك للقيام بيء اجتماعي,لكنك لا تستطيع

Maybe you’re too busy or you’ve already got plans.

ممكن ان تكون مشغول جدا او لديك خطط مسبقا

You could say:

يمكنك القول:

"I wish I could! But ___" and your excuse.

اتمنى لو اني استطيع ____ و"عذرك"

I wish I could, but we have guests in town then.

اتمنى لو اني استطيع,لكن لدينا ضيف في المنزل,

Or, I wish I could, but I’m busy tonight.

او اتمنى لو اني استطيع,ولكنني مشغول الليلة

So, “I wish I could” plus your excuse.

اذا,"اتمنى لو اني استطيع" +عذرك

I could replace “I wish I could” with "I’d love to" or "That sounds lovely".

يمكنني استبدال "اتمنى لو اني استطيع" ب "أُحب ان". او "يبدو جميلا"

That sounds lovely, but I’ll be out of town, or, I already have plans, or, but I’m helping my friend move that day.

يبدو جميلا, لكن ساكون خارج المدينة, او, لدي خطط مسبقا او, لكنني اساعد صديقي في الانتقال في هذا اليوم.

You could also say: I’d like to.

يمكنك ايضا ان تقول: أرغب في ذلك

I’d like to, but I’m not free tonight.

أرغب في ذلك, لكنني مشغول الليلة.

I’d like to, but I’m not free tonight.

ارغب في ذلك, لكنني مشغول الليلة.

Oh, it's out of tune. I'd like to, but I really can't make it work this time.

اوه, انه خارج اللحن. ارغب في ذلك, لكنني حقيقةَ لا استطيع القيام بهذا حاليا

Or, what about this one: Shoot, that sounds fun. Sorry I can’t make it.

أو, ماذا عن هذا: جمييل, يبدو مرحا. اسف لا يمكنني فعلها.

Or, Sorry I can’t come.

او آسفة, لا يمكنني المجيء.

You get the idea.

Situation 4: you get a phone call, a sales call, someone wants to talk to you about switching phone companies.

الحالة 4: لديك اتصال هااتفي احد ما يريد التكلم معك عن تغيير شركة الهاتف.

Or, you’re walking down the street and someone wants to sell you something or

او,انت تمشي في اسفل الطريق واحدهم يريد ان يبيعك شيء او

have you give money to their charity. You can be brief.

عليك اعطاء اموال لجمعية خيرية. يمكنك ان تكون مرشد

You can simply say: Sorry, or, not today. Or, I’m not interested, thanks.

يمكنك القول ببساطة: اسف او ليس اليوم او لست مهتما, شكرا

There are lots of different ways to express “no”.

هنالك الكثير من الطرق المختلفة للتعبير "لا"

Memorizing some of these phrases will make easier for you to decline an invitation

بدراسة بعض الجمل سيسهًل عليك رفض دعوة

or not to do something you’re asked to do.

او عدم القيام بشيء طُلب منك القيام به

It feels nice to have creative ways to express yourself, other than a blunt “no”, doesn’t it?
