You see, in American English, we have all sorts of words that are unstressed or even reduced:

that means we change the pronunciation.

وهذا يعني بأننا نجري تغيير في الأصوات (أي النطق أو اللفظ)

The set of the 100 most common words in English contains many, many words that reduce.

إنّ مجموعة الـ (100) كلمة الأكثر شيوعاً في الإنكليزية تحتوي على العديد من الكلمات التي تختزل أو تخفف

Does this word reduce?

Yes it does.

Fully pronounced, it has the OH as in NO diphthong.

I don't think so.

So.  Your hair looks so good.

But you'll hear it reduced to 'suh' when its used as a filler

word at the beginning of a sentence.

As a filler word, the word doesn't really have meaning.

For example:  So what do you think?

So you're going to need another one.  So. So.

You'll definitely hear Americans do this.

Number 42:  Up.

42. up [ʌp]

Hey, we found another word that doesn't reduce.

لقد وجدنا كلمة أخرى لم تختزل أو تخفف

This word will be stressed.

وهذه الكلمة ستكون مشدّدة

We're on number 42 of the 100 most common words in English,

نحن الآن في رقم (42) من الكلمات الـ (100) الأكثر شيوعاً في اللغة الإنكليزية

and this is only the third word that generally is always stressed.

وهذه فقط ثالث كلمة عادةً ما تكون مشدّدة

How amazing that so many words are unstressed or reduce!

For this word, we have the UH as in BUTTER vowel and the P consonant, Up.

Up.

Up [ʌp]

P is a stop consonant,

which means we stop the air, up-,

and release it, pp.

The release is very light.

Sometimes we don't release stop consonants,

Also we often skip the release if the next word begins with a consonant sound:

My lips came together for the P,

I think 'up' is so common because its used in so many phrasal verbs.

Number 43:  Out.

43. out [aʊt]

Oh, this is funny.

أوه..... إنه مسلّ

This is another word that is common in phrasal verbs.

هذه كلمة أخرى تكون شائعة في الأفعال المركبة

Work out, figure out, burn out, black out,

Work out [aʊt] , figure out [aʊt] , burn out [aʊt] , black out [aʊt]

block out, stand out, bring out.

block out [aʊt] , stand out [aʊt] , bring out [aʊt]

Not surprising that some of these phrasal verb parts

ليس من المستغرب بأن بعض هذه الأجزاء للأفعال المركبة

are showing up on this list.

والتي يبينها أو يظهرها على هذه القائمة

There are a bunch without.

هناك باقة أو حفنة من دونها

And this word doesn't reduce.

وهذه الكلمة لا تختزل أو لا تخفف

We have the OW diphthong, ow,

and the T consonant, out.

out [aʊt] out [aʊt]

And just like P, T is a stop consonant.

We don't usually release it: tt--

if it comes at the end of a thought group, or if the next word begins with a consonant.

Let's look at some examples:  Watch out!

End of the phrase, an unreleased T.

I cut off the air, so it's not: watch ow.

That would just sound like there was no T.

But with the abrupt stop, watch out!

Without the falling intonation, it sounds like a T to us.

You cant back out now.

There, the T was followed by a word beginning with a consonant,

T is special:  if the next word begins with a vowel or diphthong, then we flap it.

A single rra-- against the roof of the mouth.

المفرد [dddə]----- فإنّها ضد سقف الفم

For example:  Get out of here.

Out of [aʊdᴗə], out of [aʊdᴗə]

Ra-- ra--

A flap T to connect the two words.

And did you notice the reduction of OF?

Yep, that's just the schwa.

نعم هذا فقط الـ schwa ə

'Of' is word number 4 in the 100 most common words in English list.

Of [əv] هي الكلمة رقم (4) في الـ (100) كلمة الأكثر شيوعاً في قائمة اللغة الإنكليزية

Number 44.  The word IF.

44. if [ɪf]

This word is usually a conjunction and then, it's unstressed.

هذه الكلمة عادة هي من حروف العطف الشَّرطية ومن ثم أنّها غير مشدّدة [a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause (e.g., and , but , if )]

It's said very quickly.

تُقال بسرعة جداً

Call me if you get lost.

Call me if [ɪf] you get lost.

Call me if you get lost.

Call me if [ɪf] you get lost.

Call me if you get lost.

Call me if [ɪf] you get lost.

Here, its part of a string of unstressed words.

وهنا جزءها من ساسلة من الكلمات غير مشدّدة

Low in pitch, flat, said quickly.  If, if, if.

منخفضة في النغمة، ورخوة flap ، وتُقال بسرعة if [ɪf] if [ɪf] if [ɪf]

Me if you-- me if you-- call me if you get lost.

Me if [ɪf] you-- me if [ɪf] you-- call me if [ɪf] you get lost.

You might even hear the word reduced at the beginning of a sentence,

وربما حتى سمعت هذه الكلمة المختزلة أو المخفّفة في بداية جملة ما

just the F sound attached to the next word, no vowel:

فقط الصوت [f] يعلَّق للكلمة التالية، لا حرف علة أو متحرّك:

If you want leave, that's okay.

مختزلة أو مخفّفة

Number 45, the word about.

45. about [ə 'baʊt]

This word can be a preposition, an adverb, or an adjective.

هذه الكلمة يمكن أن تكون حرف جر أوظرف أو صفة

It doesn't reduce, none of the sounds change.

إنّها لا تختزل أو تخفّف، ولا يتغير أي صوت فيها

Sometimes its stressed in a sentence,

بعض الأحيان تكون مشدّدة في جملة ما

for example, I was out and about and thought I'd stop by.

على سبيل المثال: I was out [aʊt] and about [ə 'baʊt] and thought I'd stop by.

About, about.

about [ə 'baʊt] , about [ə 'baʊt]

Its longer and it has more volume, a higher pitch: out and about.

إنّها لفترة أطول ولديها حجم أكثر والنغمة عالية: [Out [aʊt] and about [ə 'baʊt

But it can also be unstressed:

ولكن يمكن أيضاً ان تكون غير مشدّدة

Its all about the timing.

Its all about the [ə 'baʊᴗðə] timing.

Its all about the timing.

Its all about the [ə 'baʊᴗðə] timing.

About the, about the, about the,

about the [ə 'baʊᴗðə] , about the [ə 'baʊᴗðə] , about the [ə 'baʊᴗðə]

it's lower in pitch and volume, and a little less clear than when it was stressed, about.

إنها أقل في النغمة والحجم، ووضوح أقل قليلاً عما هي عليه عندما تكون مشدّدة [-about [ə 'baʊ

Its all about the timing.

Its all about the [ə 'baʊᴗðə] timing.

About the, about the, about the.

So, it can be unstressed, but nothing changes, it doesn't reduce.

Since its a two-syllable word, it still has one syllable that's stressed,

طالما إنّها كلمة ذات مقطعين صوتيين، فإنّها لا تزال ذات مقطع صوتي واحد الذي هو مشدّد

that's a little clearer, even when the word is being used in an unstressed way.

Number 46.  The word 'who'.

46. who [hu]

We already talked about one question word, and that is the word 'what'.

نحن للتو تكلمنا حول كلمة أو أداة السؤال واحدة وهي كلمة what

That word can reduce, we do drop the T if the next word begins with a D.

تلك الكلمة يمكن أن تختزل أو تخفّف، حيث نُسقط الـ [t] إذا بدأت الكلمة التالية بصوت الـ [d]

But generally, question words don't reduce.

ولكن عموماً كلمة أو أداة السؤال لا تختزل أو تخفف

Generally, they're stressed.

على العموم كلاهما مشدّدتان

Who was that?

Who [hu] was that?

Who does she think she is?

Who [hu] does she think she is?

When 'who' begins a question, it doesn't reduce.

عندما who [hu] تبدأ بسؤال فلا تختزل أو تخفّف

It's the H sound and the OO as in BOO vowel.

إنّه صوت الـ [h] وصوت الـ [u] كما في boo [bu]

Who, who.

Who [hu], who [hu]

But sometimes we use the word 'who' in the middle of a sentence.

ولكن في بعض الأحيان نستخدم الكلمة who في وسط جملة ما

Then it can reduce.

عندئذٍ يمكن أن تختزل أو تخفّف

For example:  Anyone who wants to come can come.

على سبيل المثال Anyone who [u] wants to come can come.

Anyone who wants.

Anyone who [u] wants.

Anyone who wants.

Anyone who [u] wants.

Did you notice how I reduced that?

هل لاحظت كيف تم إختزالها أو تخفيفها؟

I dropped the consonant!

أسقطت الحرف الصحيح أو الساكن [h]

It was just the OO vowel.

إنّها فقط صوت العلة أو المتحرّك [u]

Oo, anyone who. Anyone who wants.

Oo, anyone who [u]. Anyone who [u] wants.

This is a reduction you might hear Americans do.

وهذا الإختزال أو التخفيف ربما تسمعه مما يفعله الأمريكيون

Number 47:  The word 'get'.

47. get [gɛt]

A verb, this word is a content word and is generally stressed in a sentence.

هي فعلٌ وهذه الكلمة ذات محتوى وعموماً مشدّدة في جملة ما

So this is the 5th word we've found in our list of the 100 most common words in English

لذلك هذه الكلمة الخامسة التي وجدناها في قائمة الـ (100) كلمة الأكثر شيوعاً في اللغة الإنكليزية

that I feel confident I can say is always stressed.

أشعر بأني أكثر ثقة حيث يمكنني أن أقول هي دائماً مشدّدة

Just 5 out of 47!  Wow!

Unstressed and reduced words are so common!

كلمات غير مشدّدة ويمكن أن تختزل أو تخفّف بشكل اعتيادي ومألوف

Let's talk about the pronunciation.

لنتكلم حول الأصوات (النطق أو اللفظ)

G consonant, EH as in BED vowel, and the T.

[g] صوت صحيح أو ساكن، وحرف العلة أو المتحرّك [ɛ] كما في bed [bɛd] وحرف صحيح أو ساكن الـ [t]

We already talked about an ending T in out.

تكلمنا للتو حول نهاية الـ [t] في كلمة out

The same rules apply here because the T comes at the end of the word,

تطبق نفس القوانين هنا لأن الـ [t] تأتي في نهاية الكلمة

just after a vowel or diphthong.

يأتي فقط بعد حرف علة أو متحرّك أو ثنائي العلة أو المتحرّك

If the word ends a thought group or is followed by a consonant,

إذا إنتهت الكلمة بمجموعة فكرية أو تُبِعت بحرف صحيح أو ساكن

it will be a Stop T.

فسيكون هناك توقف لـ [t] أي Stop T

Example: I'll get the biggest one.  Get the, get the, get the.

مثال I'll get the [gɛt | ðə] biggest one. Get the [gɛt | ðə] , get the [gɛt | ðə] , get the [gɛt | ðə]

Abrupt stop.

If the next word begins with a vowel or a diphthong, then you will flap the T:

Do you hear the Flap?  Get it.  I don't get it.

Number 48.  The word 'which'.

48. which [wɪʧ ]

This word can be stressed or unstressed,

هذه الكلمة يمكن أن تكون مشدّدة أو غير مشدّدة

depending on how it's being used in a sentence.

وذلك بالإعتماد على الإستخدام في جملة ما

But nothing changes, it doesn't reduce.

ولكن لا شيء يتغيّر ولا تختزل أو تخفف

So, stressed, it's: which.

لذلك مشدّدة، إنها: [Which [wɪʧ

Which do you want?

Which [wɪʧ ] do you want?

Which, which.  Up-down shape of stress.

Which [wɪʧ ] , which [wɪʧ ] شكل التشديد هو أعلى – أسفل up - down

Which, which.

Which [wɪʧ ] , which [wɪʧ ]

But unstressed, it's lower in pitch and flat:  which, which.

ولكن غير المشدّدة تكون أقل نغمة وأقل تسطحاً [Which [wɪʧ ] , which [wɪʧ

The movie, which I saw last night, was terrible.

The movie, which [wɪʧ ] I saw last night, was terrible.

The movie which I-- which, which, which, which.

The movie which [wɪʧ ] I—which [wɪʧ ], which [wɪʧ ], which [wɪʧ ], which [wɪʧ ]

Unstressed there, flat. Which. Which.

غير مشدّدة، ومسطّحة flat which [wɪʧ ] . which [wɪʧ ]

Let's talk about the pronunciation.

لنتكلم حول الأصوات (النطق أو التلفظ)

It begins with WH.

نبدأ بـ [w]

This can be pronounced two ways:  first, a pure W sound.

وهذا يمكن أن ينطق أو يُتلفظ بطريقتين: الأولى صوت نقي [w]

This is how I've been pronouncing it.

وهذا هو كيفية نطقها أو تلفظها

Ww, ww, which, which.

W [w], w [w], which [w--], which [w --]

The other way is to pronounce it, I think is more old-fashioned, with a: hh-- hh-- hh--

الطريقة الأخرى في نطقها أو تلفظها، أعتقد أنّها أكثر قِدماً، مع: [Which [ ͪ wɪʧ

sound before. A little escape of air first.

This is actually how my Mom pronounces WH- words,

Number 49:  Go.  A verb.

49. go [goʊ] وهي فعلٌ

Let's conjugate it:  I go, you go, she goes,

لنتكلم عن المترافقات: I go [goʊ] , you go [goʊ] , she goes [goʊz]

just add a light Z at the end: goes, goes, goes.

فقط أضف z خفيف في نهاية الكلمة goes [goʊz] , goes [goʊz] , goes [goʊz]

He goes, we go, they go.

He goes [goʊz] , we go [goʊ] , they go [goʊ]

Yes, in this form, I would say, this word is always stressed!

نعم في هذا الشكل سأقول إنّ هذه دائماً مشدّدة

The G consonant and the OH diphthong.

الصوت الصيح أو الساكن [g] وثنائي العلة أو المتحرّك [oʊ]

Go.

Go [goʊ]

Jaw drop, then lip rounding for the diphthong.

إسقاط الفك، ثم بعدئذٍ تقريب الشفاه من أجل ثنائي العلة أو المتحرّك

But you know what?

There's another conjugation for this word:  the –ing form.

I'm going to go to the store.

I'm going [ 'goʊ ɪŋ ] to go [goʊ] to the store.

I'm going to go to the mall.

There I'm using the –ing form and the infinitive.

then you know the phrase 'going to' is very common,

Let me say that in a sentence again: I'm going to go to the mall.

There, did you hear it?

I'm going to go to the mall.

Right. It's 'gonna'.

One of the most common reductions in all of English.

واحدة من الإختزال أو التخفيف الشائع جداً في كل اللغة الإنكليزية

Now, occasionally I get a comment from someone saying, 'gonna' is not proper English.  Hmm.

الآن وفي بعض الأحيان أحصل على تعليق من شخص ما يقول أن gonna ليست الإنكليزية السليمة أو المضبوطة

Not true.

غير صحيح

I would never tell anyone to write it.

أنا لا أخبر أحداً بأن يكتبها

Ok?  Don't write it!

حسناً... لا تكتبها

But its perfectly natural and normal in spoken English.

ولكنها طبيعية تماماً وعادية في الإنكليزية المنطوقة

It's proper. It's a beautiful reduction!

إنّه صحيح.. إنّه إختزال أو تخفيف جميل

I made a video several years ago

عملت مقطع فيديو منذ عدة سنوات مضت

where I took a couple of presidential speeches.

حيث أخذت خطابين رئاسيين

And I found examples of gonna.

ووجدت أمثلة على gonna

So even world leaders giving important speeches to large groups of people

ولذلك حتى قادة العالم يعطون أهمية للكلام إلى مجموعات كبيرة من الناس

use this reduction.

What's the pronunciation of gonna?

ما هي نطق أو لفظ لـ [gonna [ 'gʌn ə ؟

First syllable is stressed.  We have the G consonant,

المقطع الصوتي الأول يكون مشدّداً ولدينا الصوت الصحيح أو الساكن [g]

the UH as in BUTTER vowel,

أمّا حرف العلة أو المتحرّك [ʌ] كما في [butter [bʌtə

N, gun-- gun-- gun--

والحرف الصحيح او الساكن [n] Gun [ 'gʌn] – gun [ 'gʌn] – gun[ 'gʌn] --

and then the schwa in the unstressed syllable.

ثم بعد ذلك الـ schwa ə في المقطع الصوتي غير المشدّد

Uh-- uh-- Gonna.  Gonna.

[ə] – [ə] – gonna [ 'gʌn ə] gonna [ 'gʌn ə] .

If you have not already noticed this reduction,

إذا لم تكن لاحظت للتو هذا الإختزال أو التخفيف

now that you've learned it,

الآن قد تعلمتها

you're gonna hear it all the time.  It's everywhere.

وتسمع gonna في كل الأوقات. إنها في كل مكان

Gonna. You're gonna hear it.

gonna .... ستسمعها أنت

Number 50. Wow, we're halfway down the list.

What is number 50?

ما هو الرقم (50)؟

Me.

Me [mi]

A pronoun, which is a function word,

ضمير وكذلك كلمة ذات وظيفة

which means it will generally be unstressed in a sentence.

والذي يعني سوف تكون بشكل عام غير مشدّدة في جملة ما

It doesn't reduce, we don't change any of the sounds,

لا تختزل أو تخفف، ولا نغيّر أي صوت من الأصوات

but it's flat in pitch, said quickly compared to the other stressed words in the sentence.

لكنها مسطحة في النغمة Flat in pitch وتُقال بسرعة مقارنة بغيرها من الكلمات المشدّدة في الجمل

He gave me his number.

He gave me [mi] his number.

Gave and number are stressed,

كلمتي gave و number تكون مشدّدتان

the rest of the words, unstressed.

أما بقية الكلمات تكون غير مشدّدة

He gave me his number.

He gave me [mi] his number.

Me his, me his, me his,

Me his [miᴗɪz], me his [miᴗɪz], me his [miᴗɪz]

both flat in pitch, unstressed.

كلاهما مسطح في النغمة flat in pitch وغير مشدّدة

Said very quickly.

وتُقال بسرعة جداً

Do you hear how I'm reducing the word 'his'?

هل سمعت كيف أقوم بإختزال أو تخفيف الكلمة his ؟

Dropping the H?

إسقاط لـ [h] ؟

Wow, did we cover that?

رائع، هل غطينا تلك؟

Yeah, we did.

نعم إنه كذلك

That was number 28.

كان الرقم (28)
