well it all began when I was at the high school  the last year to be exact ly I was not sure about  

beh, tutto è iniziato quando ero al liceo, l'ultimo anno, per essere precisi, non ero sicuro di

what I wanted to study then I mean what career  to study so I decided not to study for the moment

cosa volevo studiare, quindi ho pensato intendo quale carriera studiare quindi ho deciso di non studiare per il momento

I started working hard to save money so I kind  of study a professional career later I had a

lot of different jobs son I was a carpenter  an assistant a bricklayer a seller a waiter

well I had to work hard for some  years but unluckily I couldn't

save enough money to start studying  it was not easy I had to work all

day to pay the rent wood and many other  different things because I lived alone

but one day that changed I was spending too much  time working and I could never save any money

I had studied in an Institute I studied  English and then I started teaching English

but my salary was not so good I didn't  earn enough to pay the University  

ma il mio stipendio non era così buono Non guadagnavo abbastanza per pagare l'università

but one day I decided I was going to start  no matter what and maybe you're asking how

well I didn't even know how I went to the  admission office and asked for information

I still didn't know how I was  going to pay for my studies

but I took the exam anyway I mean  the University admission test

I passed that test and I got a vacancy I was so  happy even when I didn't know how I would pay

ho superato quel test e ho ottenuto un posto libero ero così felice anche quando non sapevo come avrei pagato

Oh but before that I forgot to tell you  before I took my exam I told you I want  

Oh ma prima mi sono dimenticato di dirtelo prima di sostenere l'esame ti ho detto che volevo

to ask for information well there was a woman  who interviewed me to know my scale of payments

she asked me a lot of questions questions like  where do you live what do you do for a living  

mi ha fatto molte domande domande come dove vivi cosa fai nella vita

who are your parents what are your plans  for the future how much do you earn a month

chi sono i tuoi genitori quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro quanto guadagni al mese

you know I come from a poor City my parents  are poor and we went through difficult times  

sai vengo da una città povera i miei genitori sono poveri e abbiamo attraversato momenti difficili

I explained that to the woman who was  interviewing me she was a psychologist

l'ho spiegato alla donna che mi stava intervistando era una psicologa

and then she told me something that was  going to change the course of my life  

e poi mi disse qualcosa che avrebbe cambiato il corso della mia vita

she told me you shouldn't study at this University  

mi disse che non dovresti studiare in questa università

you are poor and you don't earn enough  money you should go to a public university

sei povero e non guadagni abbastanza dovresti andare in un università pubblica

I was like I didn't know what to answer she  continued you better go to a public university  

ero come se non sapessi cosa rispondere lei continuò faresti meglio ad andare in un'università pubblica

because you won't be able to pay for this one  you will have a lot of problems you can't do it

perché questa non potrai pagarla avrai un sacco di problemi non puoi farlo

I was shocked by what she had told me I always  wanted to go to that University because I knew  

sono rimasta scioccata da quello che mi aveva detto avevo sempre desiderato andare a quell'università perché sapevo

it was one of the best in the country of course it  was not cheap but I wanted to study there anyway

che era una delle migliori del paese, ovviamente non era economica ma volevo comunque studiare lì

and when she said you can't do it I felt terrible  I felt that all my dreams were collapsing  

e quando lei disse che non puoi farlo, io mi sentivo malissimo sentivo che tutti i miei sogni stavano crollando

that day I went to my apartment and I was thinking  about what she had told me I was so depressed

quel giorno andai a casa mia e pensavo a quello che mi aveva detto ero così depresso

but then I got angry just because she told me  I couldn't I wasn't going to listen to her am  

ma poi mi arrabbiai solo perché lei mi diceva che non potevo non sarei andato a sentirla ho

I right well the next day I went back  to the office and paid to take my test

ragione bene il giorno dopo sono tornato in ufficio e ho pagato per fare il test

as I told you before I passed the test and I was  in I was very happy but I still didn't know how I  

come vi avevo detto prima ho superato il test ed ero dentro ero molto felice ma ancora non sapevo come

was going to pay for the University I think that  psychologists motivated me to take that decision

stavo pagherò l'università Penso che gli psicologi mi abbiano motivato a prendere quella decisione

yeah I mean she told me I couldn't do it and  I didn't like what she said so I did it I know  

sì, voglio dire, mi ha detto che non potevo farlo e non mi è piaciuto quello che ha detto quindi l'ho fatto lo so lo so lo so

I know I know that sounds crazy but it really  happened that's how my professional life started

sembra una follia ma in realtà è così che la mia vita professionale è iniziata

happily I had a credit card the bank had given  to me some months before so I asked for a loan  

felicemente avevo una carta di credito che la banca mi aveva dato qualche mese prima quindi ho chiesto un prestito

and they gave it to me that's how I could pay  the University but it was a lot of money anyway

e me lo hanno dato così potevo pagare l'Università ma era tanto soldi comunque

the money I earned every month wasn't enough  by my second year of college I already owed  

i soldi che guadagnavo ogni mese non erano sufficienti al mio secondo anno di università avevo già

the bank a lot of money so I have to find a  solution otherwise I couldn't continue studying

un sacco di soldi in banca quindi devo trovare una soluzione altrimenti non potevo continuare a studiare

I investigated a lot to find a solution  then I find out that the University was  

ho indagato molto per trovare una soluzione poi Scopro che all'Università era stata

given a scholarship but this scholarship was  only for the best students in the University  

assegnata una borsa di studio ma questa borsa di studio era solo per i migliori studenti dell'Università

Anna was not the best in fact

Anna non era la migliore infatti

when I was at the school I failed maths many times  and I had to go to the summer school to fix it  

quando ero a scuola sono stata bocciata molte volte in matematica e sono dovuta andare alla scuola estiva per aggiustalo,

I was not a good student but I had to do it this  time I had no option I had to be the best student

non ero un bravo studente ma questa volta dovevo farlo, non avevo scelta, dovevo essere lo studente migliore

if I wanted to continue studying I had to  become the best student and have high grades  

se volevo continuare a studiare dovevo diventare lo studente migliore e prendere voti alti

it was not easy but I had to do it anyway so I  decided to work really hard to reach that goal

non era facile ma dovevo farlo comunque quindi ho deciso di lavorare davvero duro per raggiungere quell'obiettivo

and you know what the worst thing was that I had  to be the best student and work at the same time  

e sai qual è stata la cosa peggiore che ho avuto per essere lo studente migliore e lavorare allo stesso tempo

yeah I had to keep working as a teacher to pay  the university the bank loan and all my stuff

sì, dovevo continuare a lavorare come insegnante per pagare all'università il prestito in banca e tutte le mie cose

I spent a lot of nights studying hard sometimes  I didn't sleep because I had an important exam  

passavo molte notti a studiare duramente a volte non dormivo perché avevo un compito importante esame

the next morning I had to get a perfect score if  I wanted to get that scholarship it was not easy

la mattina dopo dovevo prendere il massimo dei voti se volevo ottenere quella borsa di studio non era facile non

I didn't eat well remember I lived alone and most  

mangiavo bene ricordavo che vivevo da solo e la maggior parte

of the times I didn't have enough  time to cook some healthy food  

delle volte non avevo abbastanza tempo per cucinare del cibo sano

so I sometimes just fry something to it  or ordered something to eat for delivery

quindi A volte mi limiterò a friggere qualcosa o a ordinare qualcosa da mangiare per la consegna a domicilio,

but all those efforts one day ped off seriously  I worked hard and I became the best student in  

ma un giorno tutti questi sforzi svanirono sul serio. Ho lavorato sodo e sono diventato il miglior studente dell'università.

the University I got the scholarship even  when I had always been the worst student

Ho ottenuto la borsa di studio anche quando ero sempre stato il peggior studente,

can you believe it I graduated  from University and now here I am

I am a licensed English teacher I earn enough  money to pay the rent and everything I'm so happy

I just want to tell you that if you want  something to happen don't just wait for it  

voglio solo dirti che se vuoi che accada qualcosa, non aspettare e basta affinché

to happen do something about it whatever but  try to do something you can do it I trust you

accada, fai qualcosa al riguardo, qualunque cosa, ma prova a fare qualcosa, puoi farcela, mi fido di te,
